 <\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

Today we shift gears to the next\nphase of this adventure \u2013 and this is no less important to our development in\nChrist than any of the previous stages.\u00a0\n<\/span>Perhaps one of the least understood facets in the way that David\nexpresses himself in the 23rd<\/sup> Psalm, his statement that \u201cMy cup\nrunneth over,\u201d uses phraseology that is long lost in modern speech.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

David\nuses a common Hebrew metaphor here.\u00a0 <\/span>We\nsee the use of the cup mentioned some 59 times throughout the Word, and it has\nboth literal and metaphorical usage.\u00a0 <\/span>The\nsignificance of this statement coming right after <\/span>\u201cThou\nanointest my head with oil\u201d <\/span>cannot be over-emphasized so let\u2019s take a look at how\nthis word and phraseology gets used throughout the Word.\u00a0 <\/span>Let\u2019s lay some foundations first before we\nconsider how the cup running over applies to us.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Dr.\nWilliam Gesenius, in his Hebrew-Chaldee Lexicon, tells us that the use of the\ncup in numerous instances is meant to describe one\u2019s lot in life, the\ncircumstances in which they find themselves, or a set of events that have just\noccurred in one\u2019s experiences, or events which are about to take place for\nthem.\u00a0 <\/span>He cites several scriptures as\nexamples of this usage:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Psalm 11:6<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>Upon the wicked shall\nHe rain, snares, fire and brimstone, and an horrible tempest: this shall be the\nportion of their cup.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Psalm 16:5<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>The Lord is the\nportion of mine inheritance and of my cup; Thou maintainest my lot.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Consider\nJesus\u2019 answer to the disciples when they were wrangling over who was going to\nsit next to Him on the Throne in the Kingdom.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Matthew 20:22-23<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>But Jesus\nanswered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup\nthat I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized\nwith? They say unto him, We are able. And he saith unto them, Ye shall drink\nindeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but\nto sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall\nbe given to them<\/i> for whom it is prepared of my Father.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Then\nwe see the example in Jesus\u2019 prayer when He prays,<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Matthew 26:39<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>And he went a\nlittle further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be\npossible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless, not as I will, but as thou wilt<\/i>.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Before\nwe get too far along in these examples (and I\u2019ve got some more for you to look\nat) take a look at this first example in the Psalms that Gesenius uses in\nmaking the point that the use of the cup is frequently a metaphor for one\u2019s lot\nin life.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

David\nwrites prophetically of the judgment that God will heap upon Israel\u2019s\nenemies.\u00a0 <\/span>He describes woe after woe with\nincreasing intensity on those who will take out their hatred and vengeance on\nIsrael, and upon God\u2019s chosen people.\u00a0\n<\/span>The phrase he uses when he writes, <\/span>\u201cthis shall be the\nportion of their cup,\u201d<\/span>\nliterally describes a constant state of affairs that will befall them.\u00a0 <\/span>He is saying that this will be the way they\nwill be living out their lives in the future.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

By\ncontrast, take a look at Isaiah\u2019s prophecy to Israel, who have experienced some\nof the woes that have been promised to the enemy.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Isaiah 51:17-23<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>Awake, awake,\nstand up, O Jerusalem, which hast drunk at the hand of the LORD the cup of his\nfury; thou hast drunken the dregs of the cup of trembling, and<\/i> wrung them<\/i>\nout.\u00a0 <\/span>There is<\/i> none to guide her\namong all the sons whom<\/i> she hath brought forth; neither is there any<\/i>\nthat taketh her by the hand of all the sons that<\/i> she hath brought up.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n\n

These two things<\/i> are come unto thee; who shall be sorry\nfor thee? desolation, and destruction, and the famine, and the sword: by whom\nshall I comfort thee? <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/sup>Thy sons have\nfainted, they lie at the head of all the streets, as a wild bull in a net: they\nare full of the fury of the LORD, the rebuke of thy God.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Therefore, hear now this, thou afflicted, and drunken, but not\nwith wine: <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/sup>Thus\nsaith thy Lord the LORD, and thy God that<\/i> pleadeth<\/span>\nthe cause of his people, Behold, I have taken out of thine hand the cup of\ntrembling, even<\/i> the dregs of the cup of my fury; thou shalt no more\ndrink it again:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

But I will put it into the hand of them that afflict thee; which\nhave said to thy soul, Bow down, that we may go over: and thou hast laid thy\nbody as the ground, and as the street, to them that went over.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Pretty\nfascinating metaphoric picture, isn\u2019t it?\u00a0\n<\/span>Israel gets a reversal of this \u201ccup of fury\u201d along with the promise that\n<\/span>\u201cthou shalt no more drink it again.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Earlier,\nwe cited David\u2019s statement that, <\/span>\u201cThe Lord is the\nportion of mine inheritance and of my cup; Thou maintainest my lot.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Consider\nhow this amplifies out of the Hebrew.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I have made the Lord to be my complete inheritance, my life, the\nreason for my living (and I have no other); and, as a result, He has set my\nfuture in place and maintains my destiny.\u00a0\n<\/span><\/span>(Psalm\n16:5, RAC Translation & Amplification)<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Let\nme pause here to share a personal experience which mirrors David\u2019s statement.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

My\nfather passed away on Good Friday of 1986.\u00a0\n<\/span>He left a will with specific instructions for Della and me concerning\nthe ongoing and future ministry at Saint Paul Island.\u00a0 <\/span>He also put me in charge of the entire family\nestate with instructions to take care of my mother, whose financial abilities\nand wisdom were somewhat lacking.\u00a0 <\/span>(I\u2019m\nbeing careful here.)<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

That\nwill was kept from me for reasons I won\u2019t even try to go into.\u00a0 <\/span>My mother lived for another 14 years and\npassed away on September 29, 2000.\u00a0 <\/span>We\nlearned that she had been enticed to give both the home and the church and the\nproperty at Saint Paul Island to the denomination, and it took place while she\nwas on her death bed at the hospital.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Della\nand I were given three weeks to clear out the family belongings and vacate the\nhome and property at Saint Paul Island by the denomination.\u00a0 <\/span>I came across the will Dad had left while\ngoing through his papers and realized the depth of the deception and trickery\nthat had taken place, and the theft of the inheritance Dad had left for my\nbrother and me.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

If\nI say that I was steaming, that would be an understatement!\u00a0 <\/span>Della saw my distress and would pat<\/span> me on the back and say, \u201cHoney, just let it go.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>That was easier said than done!\u00a0 <\/span>She was extremely upset with the entire set\nof events that had unfolded as well, but she had been able to keep her spirit\nin check.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

One\nday as I was walking through the living room of the home at Saint Paul \u2014 the\nsame home I had helped my father build \u2014 my spirit was literally aflame.\u00a0 <\/span>The Lord spoke to me in that moment and said\nto me, \u201cSon, I\u2019m your inheritance!\u00a0\n<\/span>I\u2019m your future!\u00a0 <\/span>I will take care\nof your inheritance to come.\u201d<\/o:p><\/i><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I\njust wept.\u00a0 <\/span>His words melted me.\u00a0 <\/span>The steam was gone.\u00a0 <\/span>From that moment forward, I was at\npeace.\u00a0 <\/span>Sharing it with Della changed our\nentire atmosphere, both naturally and spiritually, and we were able to complete\nthe cleanup in peace.\u00a0 <\/span>We were able to\nrelease the future of Saint Paul and my folks\u2019 ministry there to the Lord and\nlet Him bring things to the fruition He had purposed from the beginning.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I\u2019ve\nremembered my conversation with Dad when he was on his deathbed.\u00a0 <\/span>He had said to me, \u201cSon, I\u2019m sorry that I\ndon\u2019t have more of an inheritance to leave you.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>My answer to him was, \u201cDad, you don\u2019t ever\nhave to apologize.\u00a0 <\/span>I have an inheritance\nand a heritage in God passed on to me that money can\u2019t buy.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nproof of those words the Lord spoke to me has manifested time and time again in\nthe years that have followed, and we have seen a provision of the Lord, along\nwith a path and a destiny in Him that made that inheritance pale by comparison.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Let\u2019s\ncome back to Jesus\u2019 prayer in the Garden and the significance of what was\nunfolding as He says,<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless,\nnot as I will, but as thou wilt<\/i>.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

What\u2019s\nHe saying?\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cFather, I know that my\ndestiny from the beginning has been to redeem the human race from the curse\nthat came upon them with Adam\u2019s sin.\u00a0\n<\/span>That destiny means that I\u2019m facing torture, crucifixion and death.\u00a0 <\/span>If there\u2019s any other way for this to be\naccomplished, make it so!\u00a0 <\/span>Nevertheless,\nI put my flesh and the thoughts of the impending torture and crucifixion aside\nand I yield to Your Will, and Your Plan \u2014 established from before time began.\u201d<\/o:p><\/i><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Jesus\nclearly understood that his \u201ccup\u201d \u2014 established before Creation \u2014 was to redeem\nthe human race.\u00a0 <\/span>He knew that, despite\nthe perfection of Creation at the beginning, and despite the fact that Adam and\nEve would be created in His image (along with Father and Holy Spirit), they\nwould be deceived by Satan \u2014 the Serpent \u2014 and that the intimacy, previously\nestablished and walked in, would be lost.\u00a0\n<\/span>His \u201ccup\u201d was to do everything necessary to bridge the gulf between them\nand God.\u00a0 <\/span>His \u201ccup\u201d was to cut off the\ncurse of death that had befallen the human race and restore eternity.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Jesus\nknew from childhood what His destiny was.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

He\nstill had to grow up as normal man, experience the feelings, the emotions and\nthe infirmities that fallen man experiences.\u00a0\n<\/span>There had to be the transition between His \u201cnormal\u201d life and the\nsupernatural walk in the Spirit with the anointing that would empower Him to\ndisplay the normal life in God that we were created for.\u00a0 <\/span>He had to call and disciple men who would\nbecome the extension of Who He is and begin spreading that same life throughout\nthe nations.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

So\nfar, Jesus had partaken of the \u201ccup\u201d given to Him at birth.\u00a0 <\/span>But there was still a bit more to drink of\nthis \u201ccup.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>Unless He finished drinking\nof this \u201ccup,\u201d Holy Spirit could not come.\u00a0\n<\/span>The disciples could never walk in their callings nor be anointed to\nfunction apostolically or prophetically or evangelistically, etc., unless Holy\nSpirit endued them with that same power and authority that Jesus has.\u00a0 <\/span>He had to finish drinking of the \u201ccup.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>That was the Will of Father from before time\nbegan.\u00a0 <\/span>And Jesus resigned Himself to\nfinish drinking so that we could all experience and have access to the\nsupernatural life we were created for.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Let\u2019s\ntake this discussion on one more track before we get to the \u201ccup running over\u201d\nexperience David describes.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

You\u2019ll\nremember Joseph\u2019s experience in the prison in Egypt when he had the\ninterpretation of the two dreams \u2014 the one of Pharaoh\u2019s butler, and the other\nof Pharaoh\u2019s baker.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Genesis 40:9-11<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>And the chief\nbutler told his dream to Joseph, and said to him, In my dream, behold, a vine was<\/i>\nbefore me; <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/sup>And\nin the vine were<\/i> three branches: and it was<\/i> as though it budded, and<\/i>\nher blossoms shot forth; and the clusters thereof brought forth ripe grapes: <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/sup>And Pharaoh\u2019s cup was<\/i>\nin my hand: and I took the grapes, and pressed them into Pharaoh\u2019s cup, and I\ngave the cup into Pharaoh\u2019s hand.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And\nthe Lord gave Joseph the interpretation which was that within three days, the\nchief butler would be restored to his place of service, and that he would\ndeliver Pharaoh\u2019s cup into his hand.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(Note:\nThe chief butler, in this instance, is very much like Nehemiah, who was\ncupbearer to Artaxerxes.\u00a0 <\/span>We\u2019ll talk\nabout that more momentarily.)<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Genesis\n40:16-17: <\/span>When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was good, he\nsaid unto Joseph, I also was<\/i> in my dream, and, behold, I had<\/i>\nthree white baskets on my head: <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/sup>And in the uppermost\nbasket there was<\/i> of all manner of bake-meats for Pharaoh; and the birds\ndid eat them out of the basket upon my head.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Here,\nagain, Joseph gives the interpretation and tells the chief baker that within\nthree days, Pharaoh would hang him and the birds would eat his flesh.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

So,\nwhat are we getting at?\u00a0 <\/span>Again, the cup\nsignifies life.\u00a0 <\/span>The fact that the chief\nbutler is restored to his position as cup-bearer means that his life, his\nposition and esteem in Pharaoh\u2019s court and his future were restored to him.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

That\nbrings us to Nehemiah.\u00a0 <\/span>Nehemiah, as you\nknow, was the cup-bearer to Xerxes\u2019 son, who was also the son of Esther.\u00a0 <\/span>Artaxerxes (or Artaxerxes Longimanus, as he\nis known historically) came to the throne at the tender age of 14 when his\nfather was assassinated.\u00a0 <\/span>Esther became\nthe guiding force behind his throne for many years, and it was at her guidance\nthat Nehemiah was appointed to become cup-bearer.\u00a0 <\/span>(Esther, incidentally, as Queen Mother, was\nalso the guiding force behind the king\u2019s approval for Ezra\u2019s return to rebuild\nthe temple in Jerusalem years later.)<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\ncup-bearer, historically, held life and death in his hand.\u00a0 <\/span>Before the king would drink of any cup, the\ncup-bearer had to first taste of it.\u00a0 <\/span>If\nthe king\u2019s enemies had placed poison in the cup, the cup-bearer would die and\nthe king\u2019s life would be saved.\u00a0 <\/span>If the\ncup-bearer suffered no ill after partaking of the cup, he would hand it to the\nking, who knew that he could safely drink of it.\u00a0 <\/span>That cup became the representation of life\nand\/or death.\u00a0 <\/span>One\u2019s future and destiny\nwas secure as long as there was life in the cup.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And\nthat brings us to David\u2019s expression when he writes, <\/span>\u201cMy\ncup runneth over.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Consider\nwhat has just taken place.\u00a0 <\/span>We\u2019ve just\nexperienced the extraordinary \u2014 and I do mean, the extraordinary \u2014 in the event\nwe\u2019ve just talked about for the past weeks, <\/span>\u201cThou anointest my\nhead with oil.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

A\ncommissioning has taken place akin to that Jesus experienced when He came up\nout of the water after John had baptized him.\u00a0\n<\/span>A radical change of life unfolded for Jesus from that moment forth.\u00a0 <\/span>The anointing was tested, to be sure, but\nfrom the moment He told Satan to \u201cGet thee hence,\u201d angels came and ministered\nto Him.\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus had access to those angels\non a 24-hour basis from then on.\u00a0 <\/span>You\nonly have to think about what He said when He was on trial, as well as when He\nhung on the Cross.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n
