 <\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

We were blessed to\nhave Bruce Allen in our home a couple of weeks ago.\u00a0 <\/span>He came to spend a few days "just to\ntake a break" from his busy traveling schedule.\u00a0 <\/span>We had a great time sharing back and forth and\nbouncing things off each other for the whole time he was with us, but also in\nour Sunday gathering.\u00a0 <\/span>He insisted that I\nneed to assemble all of these Coffee Breaks on the 23rd Psalm and put them into\na book.\u00a0 <\/span>We've talked to a publisher, and\nit looks like we will be doing just that.\u00a0\n<\/span>Of course, I have to finish this series, first!<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

David\nbegins his wrap-up of this 23rd Psalm adventure by stating, <\/span>\u201cSurely\ngoodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>There\u2019s a whole lot wrapped up in that, so\nwe\u2019ll see how far we get in sharing today.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Take\na look at something that happens to Moses while he is in the mountain top with\nthe Lord and asks this question:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Exodus 33:18-19<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>And he said, I\nbeseech thee, show me thy glory. \u00a0<\/span><\/sup>And\nhe said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the\nname of the LORD before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious,\nand will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/span>It\u2019s an unusual way of expressing things, and\nthe KJV really doesn\u2019t get it.\u00a0 <\/span>The word,\n\u201cgoodness,\u201d is an oversimplification of the Hebrew word, <\/span>\u00e1e\u00e8<\/span>, <\/span>toob<\/span><\/i><\/b>.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Here\u2019s\nhow it comes out when you amplify the Hebrew:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And He answered, I will cause the entirety of My\nself<\/span>, My Kingdom, My fairness, beauty, joy, prosperity and goodness, and\nMy discernment, to transition in phases by and upon you; I will address and\npronounce the nature, the character, the makeup the personality of Yod Hey Vav\nHey (Jehovah) to you personally; I will [demonstrate to you that I] bestow\nfavor, acceptance and mercy on whom I choose to show my love, favor, acceptance\nand mercy.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>(Exodus 33:18-19,\nRAC Translation & Amplification)<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Sure\nchanges the picture, doesn\u2019t it?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Consider\nwhere we\u2019ve been and what has been developing in our character and nature during\nthe growth processes as we\u2019ve walked with the Lord in the Paths of\nRighteousness.\u00a0 <\/span>The Lord has been\ndeveloping Himself in us over these years.\u00a0\n<\/span>Anyone that thinks this is something that happens quickly in us is\nliving in a fantasy land.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

What\nGod does is careful.\u00a0 <\/span>It is\nmethodical.\u00a0 <\/span>It is precise.\u00a0 <\/span>It is purposeful.\u00a0 <\/span>There is design and destiny in what He is\ndoing.\u00a0 <\/span>And let\u2019s not forget that this\nwhole transformation process is designed to develop us into fit, compatible,\ncounterparts for the Lord Jesus Christ.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

After\nall (and we\u2019ll get into this in more depth later), His purpose is for us to\ndwell with Him forever, functioning like Him, operating fully in His character,\nHis nature, His likeness, His authority and power \u2014 ruling and reigning with\nHim forever!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

If\nindeed we\u2019ve followed where He has led us, if we have responded \u2014 and not\nreacted \u2014 to every situation we\u2019ve encountered, every experience has been\ndesigned to develop All that He is in us.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I\u2019ll\nsay this \u2014 and keep saying it: there is no option but for goodness and mercy to\nfollow us wherever we go if we\u2019ve responded properly to the Lord at every stage\nof His development in our lives.\u00a0 <\/span>Many\nyears ago, during the Charismatic Renewal, Bob Mumford was teaching on the 23rd\nPsalm and he put it like this.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u201cGoodness\nand mercy are like two puppy dogs that follow us around.\u00a0 <\/span>They hang at our heels.\u00a0 <\/span>They won\u2019t leave us alone.\u00a0 <\/span>They\u2019re always there!\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

It\u2019s\na humorous metaphor, but you get the picture.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Here,\nagain, is what He has been developing in us:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I will cause the entirety of My self<\/span>, My\nKingdom, My fairness, beauty, joy, prosperity and goodness, and My discernment,\nto transition in phases by and upon you.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

This\nis exactly what has been happening.\u00a0 <\/span>He\nhas been \u201ctransitioning\u201d Himself in phases within us.\u00a0 <\/span>One does not suddenly become all of\nthat.\u00a0 <\/span>Look at what He did with Abraham!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We\nknow from Acts, chapter 7, that the Lord called Abraham while he was still in\nUr of the Chaldees.\u00a0 <\/span>From all I\u2019ve seen\nand know, Abraham was roughly 50 years of age when God first called him.\u00a0 <\/span>Having been raised in a home where his father\nwas a maker of idols and a Babylonian priest, there was nothing in Abraham\u2019s\nupbringing that would lend itself to an understanding of the Lord God Almighty.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Hearing\nthat voice of God calling him to something that simply didn\u2019t fit his paradigm\nbrought about a partial obedience.\u00a0\n<\/span>Notice how Stephen puts it as he is describing things to the priests and\nPharisees.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Acts 7:2-3a<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>And said unto him,\nGet thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and come into the land which\nI shall show thee.\u00a0 <\/span>Then came he out of\nthe land of the Chaldaeans, and dwelt in Charran<\/span>:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

What\nwe see is partial but progressive obedience. Abraham was instructed not only to\nleave the country, but his father\u2019s house as well.\u00a0 <\/span>The following narrative tells us what happens\nnext.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Acts 7:3b<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>and from thence, when\nhis father was dead, he removed him into this land, wherein ye now dwell.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/span>The Genesis narrative gives us a little more\nclarity.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Genesis 12:1-5<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0 <\/span>Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee\nout of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father\u2019s house, unto a\nland that I will show thee:\u00a0 <\/span>And I will\nmake of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great;\nand thou shalt be a blessing:\u00a0 <\/span>And I will\nbless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall\nall families of the earth be blessed.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

So Abram departed, as the LORD had spoken unto him; and Lot went\nwith him: and Abram was<\/i> seventy and five years old when he departed out\nof Haran.\u00a0 <\/span>And Abram took Sarai his wife,\nand Lot his brother\u2019s son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and\nthe souls that they had gotten in Haran; and they went forth to go into the land\nof Canaan; and into the land of Canaan they came.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

So\n25 years elapsed in Abraham\u2019s life between his first obedient response to the\nLord and his finally leaving his family household behind.\u00a0 <\/span>He waited until his father was dead before he\nwould actually follow the Lord into <\/span>\u201ca land that I will\nshow thee.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>That land, of course, was Canaan.\u00a0 <\/span>There was a progressive change taking place\nin Abraham, but it demonstrates the patience and mercy of the Lord as He\nbrought Abraham along towards a destiny that would eventually affect every one\nof us.\u00a0 <\/span>What is clear, as well, is that\nAbraham saw in his spirit, the promise of God.\u00a0\n<\/span>His nature had yet to be completely transformed, but there was a\nyearning in him for God\u2019s best.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

That\nsame thing has been happening to us.\u00a0\n<\/span>None of us have been totally obedient to the Lord when He first spoke to\nus and gave us direction.\u00a0 <\/span>Each of us has\nhad to be faced with our need for deliverance from one or more of the families\nof fear in this walk \u2014 and it is why our obedience to the Lord is, or has been,\ncompromised during the years.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Notice\nthat even now, Abraham\u2019s obedience is still compromised.\u00a0 <\/span>Instead of totally leaving all of the family\nbehind (with the exception of his wife, Sarah, of course) he allows his nephew,\nLot, to come along.\u00a0 <\/span>That\u2019s not going to\nbe an immediate issue, but it is going to become a thorn in Abraham\u2019s side in\nthe years to come, and ultimately give rise to two nations \u2014 the Moabites and\nAmmonites \u2014 who would become enemies to Abraham\u2019s descendants through his\ncovenanted son, Isaac.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Abraham\nis a long way from true responsiveness to the Lord, however.\u00a0 <\/span>He is still reactionary to his surroundings.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Genesis 12:10-15<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>And there was\na famine in the land: and Abram went down into Egypt to sojourn there; for the\nfamine was<\/i> grievous in the land.\u00a0\n<\/span>And it came to pass, when he was come near to enter into Egypt, that he\nsaid unto Sarai his wife, Behold now, I know that thou art<\/i> a fair woman\nto look upon:\u00a0 <\/span>Therefore it shall come to\npass, when the Egyptians shall see thee, that they shall say, This is<\/i>\nhis wife: and they will kill me, but they will save thee alive.\u00a0 <\/span>Say, I pray thee, thou art<\/i> my sister:\nthat it may be well with me for thy sake; and my soul shall live because of\nthee.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And it came to pass, that, when Abram was come into Egypt, the\nEgyptians beheld the woman that she was<\/i> very fair.\u00a0 <\/span>The princes also of Pharaoh saw her, and\ncommended her before Pharaoh: and the woman was taken into Pharaoh\u2019s house.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Oops!\u00a0 <\/span>See what happens when you react in fear to\nyour surroundings?\u00a0 <\/span>There was a famine in\nthe land.\u00a0 <\/span>Instead of waiting to see\nGod\u2019s provision in the midst of famine, Abraham heads for Egypt.\u00a0 <\/span>Bad move!\u00a0\n<\/span>Now he is in the camp of the Enemy, and the Enemy sees his wife.\u00a0 <\/span>There\u2019s a whole lot more to this story that I\nwon\u2019t get into.\u00a0 <\/span>I was there and watched things\ndevelop during that period in 1996 when the Lord took me in the Spirit and\ntransported me back to see the unfolding of events in Abraham\u2019s life.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

God\nhas a purposed destiny for Abraham and the Enemy is doing his best to defeat\nit.\u00a0 <\/span>And Pharaoh gets wind of this beauty\nand decides that he\u2019s going to have Sarah (she is still known as, Sarai, at\nthis time because an ongoing transformation in her life has yet to be\ncompleted) for himself.\u00a0 <\/span>Reacting again\nin fear, Abraham tells his wife to say that she is his sister lest the Egyptian\nPharaoh decides to just kill him and take her.\u00a0\n<\/span>And that\u2019s exactly what happens.\u00a0\n<\/span>Sarah tells the Egyptians that she is Abraham\u2019s sister.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

It\u2019s\na funny thing about God!\u00a0 <\/span>We screw up in\nour obedience to the Lord.\u00a0 <\/span>We miss it badly\nand yet the Lord still manages to pour out His blessing on our lives.\u00a0 <\/span>Before I continue, allow me to say one thing\nhere.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Just\nbecause we have the blessing of God unfolding in our lives at different times\nis not necessarily a sign of His approval.\u00a0\n<\/span>We\u2019re His kids.\u00a0 <\/span>He loves us.\u00a0 <\/span>As such, He is<\/i><\/b> going to bless\nus as time goes by.\u00a0 <\/span>But the sign of His\napproval is<\/i><\/b> going to come when our obedience and responsiveness\nto Him is complete and total.\u00a0 <\/span>And the\nsign of His approval will be markedly demonstrated!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Genesis 12:16<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0\n<\/span><\/span>And he (Pharaoh) entreated Abram well for her sake: and he had\nsheep, and oxen, and he asses, and menservants, and maidservants, and she\nasses, and camels.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

See\nhow God is blessing Abraham?\u00a0 <\/span>In spite of\nthe reactionary place in Abraham and the way he is reacting in fear to things,\nGod is still blessing him \u2014 enormously.\u00a0\n<\/span>His deception, however, is going to be found out, and when that\ndeception is discovered, he is going to be driven out of Egypt, back to where\nGod intended for him to be in the first place.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Genesis 12:17-20<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0\n<\/span><\/span>And the LORD plagued Pharaoh and his house with great plagues\nbecause of Sarai Abram\u2019s wife.\u00a0 <\/span>And\nPharaoh called Abram, and said, What is<\/i> this that<\/i> thou hast done\nunto me? why didst thou not tell me that she was<\/i> thy wife?\u00a0 <\/span>Why saidst<\/span> thou,\nShe is<\/i> my sister? so I might have taken her to me to wife: now therefore\nbehold thy wife, take her<\/i>, and go thy way.\u00a0 <\/span>And Pharaoh commanded his<\/i> men\nconcerning him: and they sent him away, and his wife, and all that he had.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

There\nis a progression taking place in Abraham in his relationship with the Lord, and\nit is the same progression that God does with us.\u00a0 <\/span>Each of us faces one or more of the families\nof fear in our walk with God.\u00a0 <\/span>It is\nabsolutely mandatory that we be free from all<\/i><\/b> fear if the\ngoodness of the Lord is going to be manifested in our lives.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Abraham\u2019s\nprincipal fear is the fear of death.\u00a0 <\/span>We\nsee it exhibited time and time again.\u00a0\n<\/span>But the progression that is taking place in him is God\u2019s deliverance,\nonce and for all, from that fear.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Again,\nwe see the blessing of the Lord on display.\u00a0\n<\/span>In spite of Abraham\u2019s screw-up by going into Egypt, and the deception\nwith Sarah, as he departs Egypt, we see the following:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Genesis 13:2-4<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0\n<\/span><\/span>And Abram was<\/i> very rich in cattle, in silver, and in\ngold. \u00a0<\/span><\/sup>And he went on his\njourneys from the south even to Bethel, unto the place where his tent had been\nat the beginning, between Bethel and Hai; \u00a0<\/span><\/sup>Unto the place of the altar, which he\nhad made there at the first: and there Abram called on the name of the LORD.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nHebrew phrase that describes Abraham\u2019s state goes like this: <\/span>\u00e3\u00e0\u00ca\u00ee\u00c0<\/span> <\/span>\u00e3\u00e1k<\/span>.\u00a0 <\/span>The phrase is, <\/span>kabad meh\node<\/span><\/i><\/b>.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Kabad<\/span><\/i><\/b> describes wealth in unbelievable\nabundance; to be weighted down with it.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Meh ode<\/span><\/i><\/b> is an expression\nof vehemence.\u00a0 <\/span>Hence, Abraham is being\ndescribed as among the wealthiest of all people.\u00a0 <\/span>We\u2019ll come back to this later.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

When\nhe first came into the land of Canaan, Abraham established an altar to the Lord\nwhich he called Beth el: \u201cthe house of the Lord.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>It became a pivotal place for him and his\ndescendants.\u00a0 <\/span>It marked the fact that God\nwas with him, that God had indeed brought him into a land populated with multiple\nnations who were enemies of God, and that God had given him enormous favor with\nthose enemies.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Before\nGod can continue with his development in Abraham\u2019s life, however, there must\nnow be a separation between he and his nephew, Lot.\u00a0 <\/span>Lot is not part of the covenant, and Lot\ncannot participate in what God is about to unfold.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

As\nwe see what happens, it is clear why Lot could not be a participant in that\ncovenant and the blessing and approval of God that would come with it.\u00a0 <\/span>As is always true when you have a\nrelationship \u2014 particularly a family relationship \u2014 with someone who is unresponsive\nto the things of God, strife and division take place.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We'll\nstop here and pick up this narrative in Abraham's life next week.\u00a0 <\/span>We are just getting into the picture of the\ngoodness and mercy of the Lord, and how it follows us.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n
