Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#984806;mso-themecolor:accent6;mso-themeshade:128'>This is the third week\nof our study in the life of Abraham and considering the goodness of the Lord\nthat followed him.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Now we will see the\nfinal overcoming of fear in Abraham's life -- specifically, the Fear of Death\n-- and just how the goodness of the Lord brought Abraham to this place.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none;tab-stops:4.5pt'><b style='mso-bidi-font-weight:\nnormal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#984806;mso-themecolor:accent6;mso-themeshade:128'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>If\nit seems like I\u2019m belaboring this whole story, it\u2019s just because I want you to\nsee how God continues to generate His goodness in spite of Abraham\u2019s screw-ups.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s the same goodness that is eventually\ngoing to follow Abraham for the rest of his life, once his obedience to the\nLord and his final act of faith in the face of death are complete.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Let\u2019s not forget.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Abraham has suffered with the Fear of Death\nhis whole life.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>God is about setting\nhim free from that fear \u2014 not only for Abraham\u2019s sake, but for the sake of his\ndescendants.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>When\none lives and walks obediently to the Lord, no matter the circumstances, and no\nmatter how things appear to be the direct opposite of God\u2019s promise, there is\nno place for fear of any kind.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Our\nobedience to the Lord in the face of negative circumstances prepares us for the\ngoodness of the Lord to follow us, all the days of our lives.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>I\nremind you of Dwain McKenzie\u2019s statement (and I\u2019ve quoted this hundreds of\ntimes in the past 40 years): <b><i>Things are not what they seem to be, they\u2019re\nwhat God says they are!<o:p><\/o:p><\/i><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Thirteen\nyears pass for Abraham with a close relationship developing between Abraham and\nIshmael.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>He is now 99 years of age.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Genesis 17 unfolds for us the most expansive\nnature of the covenant that God is making with Abraham.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>He makes it abundantly clear that His\ncovenant with Abraham will come through a son whom Sarah will bear (her age\nnotwithstanding)<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>That\nson will be named Isaac.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>He will be the\nson of covenant \u2014 not Ishmael.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>God\u2019s\ncommand to Abraham is, <\/span><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Bernard MT Condensed\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#A50021'>\u201cI am the Almighty God, walk before me and be thou\nperfect.\u201d<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span style='font-size:\n13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>(The Hebrew text gives us El Shaddai\n\u2014 the God of more than enough \u2014 and this is the first time God has revealed\nHimself to Abraham this way.)<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>The\nLord next appears on the scene in the form of three angels whom Abraham\ninstantly recognize as having come from the Lord.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>He insists that they remain with him so that\nhe can prepare a feast for them.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>They do\nso while Abraham\u2019s servant goes and kills a calf, dresses it and roasts\nit.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>With bread, butter and milk, he\nserves his angelic guests and stands by under a tree while they eat.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Finally,\nthey call for Sarah to come out and Abraham tells them that she is in the tent.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>The angelic visitors proceed to tell Abraham\nthat nine months hence, Sarah will bear a child.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Sarah, knowing that she is well past\nchild-bearing age gets tickled at the idea and begins to laugh within\nherself.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>The angels reprove her for her\nlaughter and declare the following:<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><b><u><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Genesis 18:14<\/span><\/u><\/b><span style='font-size:\n13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>:<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\n<\/span><\/span><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Bernard MT Condensed\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#A50021'>Is <span class=SpellE>any thing<\/span> too hard for the LORD? At\nthe time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and\nSarah shall have a son.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>And\nGod keeps His promise.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Sarah\u2019s youth is\nregenerated, her youthful beauty is restored, and sure enough she gets pregnant\nand brings forth Isaac nine months later.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\n<\/span>But something happens while Sarah is pregnant, and it is a demonstration\nthat Abraham is still not free from the fear he suffered with when he was in\nEgypt and told Sarah to tell everyone that she was his sister.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>They\ndecide to take a journey into the south where the Philistines are in\npower.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span style='font-size:\n13.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\"'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Abimelech,\nthe Philistine king, sees Sarah\u2019s beauty and immediately takes her, thinking\nthat he\u2019s going to have her for his wife.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\n<\/span>Once again, the Lord has to step in and demonstrate His goodness and\nblessing to Abraham.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Before Abimelech\ncan consummate his intentions to take her as his wife, the entire court of\nwomen \u2014 his servants and their wives \u2014 cease in childbearing.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>We can read into the Hebrew text that\ndescribes what happens.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Women who may be\npregnant cease to continue in their pregnancies.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Everything comes to a halt.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>God\nspeaks to Abimelech and tells him that he has taken the wife of a prophet \u2014\nAbraham \u2014 and that if he doesn\u2019t restore her to him, he is a dead man, along\nwith all of his household.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Abimelech\nquickly obeys and gives Abraham a thousand pieces of silver at the same time.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Two\nmore tests are still in store for Abraham in order to bring him to the place\nwhere the goodness of the Lord will be firmly developed and implanted into his\ncharacter and nature.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>This first test is\ngoing to be one of the toughest tests Abraham has faced to date.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>This is a test that addresses human\ncompassion.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>If the goodness of the Lord\nis to become our goodness, we cannot substitute human compassion for the Word\nof the Lord.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>When\nGod commands us to do something, we are prone at times to let our own reasoning\nget in the way.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>If that which God\ncommands requires something that defies our own human-<span class=SpellE>ness<\/span>\nand our personal feelings, His Word can require us to shut off our emotions and\ncompassion in order to obey.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>And that\u2019s\nexactly what God is about to do with Abraham.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\n<\/span>Watch!<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><b><u><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Genesis 21:9-14<\/span><\/u><\/b><span style='font-size:\n13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>:<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\n<\/span><\/span><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Bernard MT Condensed\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#A50021'>And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, which she had born\nunto Abraham, mocking. <sup><span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0<\/span><\/sup>Wherefore\nshe said unto Abraham, Cast out this bondwoman and her son: for the son of this\nbondwoman shall not be heir with my son, <i>even<\/i> with Isaac.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Bernard MT Condensed\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#A50021'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Bernard MT Condensed\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#A50021'>And the thing was very grievous in Abraham\u2019s sight because of\nhis son. <sup><span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0<\/span><\/sup>And God said unto\nAbraham, Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of\nthy bondwoman; in all that Sarah hath said unto thee, hearken unto her voice;\nfor in Isaac shall thy seed be called. and Abraham dwelt at Beersheba.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Bernard MT Condensed\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#A50021'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>I\nwatched this happen when the Lord took me into Abraham\u2019s life to watch things\nunfold.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>The wheels were turning in his\nhead when the Lord spoke to Him and instructed him to take Isaac and offer him\nup to the Lord as a burnt sacrifice.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\n<\/span>Every argument the mind can construct went through his thoughts.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>But something has developed between God and\nAbraham by this time.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Isaac is roughly\n30 years of age.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>God speaks.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Abraham obeys.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>His obedience is almost automatic.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>But that doesn\u2019t mean that his mind isn\u2019t\narguing against this.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Nevertheless, he\ncan\u2019t help himself.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>God has never failed\nto perform exactly what He said He would do.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\n<\/span>And that\u2019s what rules Abraham\u2019s spirit!<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:black'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>By\nthe time they get to the base of the mountains of Moriah, something has\nhappened in him.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>For the first time, he\nis going to speak the Word of the Lord.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\n<\/span>Faith is going to come forth.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Bernard MT Condensed\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#A50021'>Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the\nplace afar off. <sup><span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0<\/span><\/sup>And Abraham\nsaid unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; in the\nthicket, seeing the sacrifice take place with the ram in Isaac\u2019s place, and\nunderstanding the prophetic significance of all that was unfolding gripped me\nin ways I don\u2019t know how style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>All\nof this unfolded within view of the citadel that Shem\/Melchizedek had built for\nhis bride hundreds of years prior.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>(In\nfact, Shem was still in residence when Abraham prepared to offer in us, where He has led us in the Paths of Righteousness, how\nwe have responded to His voice, how we have set aside our human emotions in\norder to obey, how we, too, have walked through the Valley of the Shadow of\nDeath in order to be set free from the Fear of Death, and how we have\nexperienced the constant verity and integrity of God\u2019s Word to us \u2014 no matter\nour failures, and the frequent getting-in-the-way of our flesh.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:12.5pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ndisplay:none;mso-hide:all'>At this point, Surely the goodness of the Lord will\nfollow us all the days of our lives.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>It\nhas been ingrained in us.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>It has become\npart and parcel of our nature.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>We don\u2019t\nknow how to live or act any differently.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal the mercy of the Lord!<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\n<\/span>It\u2019s not just goodness; it is that the goodness and mercy follow us all\nthe days of our lives.<span
