 <\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

This is the third week\nof our study in the life of Abraham and considering the goodness of the Lord\nthat followed him.\u00a0 <\/span>Now we will see the\nfinal overcoming of fear in Abraham's life -- specifically, the Fear of Death\n-- and just how the goodness of the Lord brought Abraham to this place.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

If\nit seems like I\u2019m belaboring this whole story, it\u2019s just because I want you to\nsee how God continues to generate His goodness in spite of Abraham\u2019s screw-ups.\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s the same goodness that is eventually\ngoing to follow Abraham for the rest of his life, once his obedience to the\nLord and his final act of faith in the face of death are complete.\u00a0 <\/span>Let\u2019s not forget.\u00a0 <\/span>Abraham has suffered with the Fear of Death\nhis whole life.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>God is about setting\nhim free from that fear \u2014 not only for Abraham\u2019s sake, but for the sake of his\ndescendants.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

When\none lives and walks obediently to the Lord, no matter the circumstances, and no\nmatter how things appear to be the direct opposite of God\u2019s promise, there is\nno place for fear of any kind.\u00a0 <\/span>Our\nobedience to the Lord in the face of negative circumstances prepares us for the\ngoodness of the Lord to follow us, all the days of our lives.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I\nremind you of Dwain McKenzie\u2019s statement (and I\u2019ve quoted this hundreds of\ntimes in the past 40 years): Things are not what they seem to be, they\u2019re\nwhat God says they are!<\/o:p><\/i><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Thirteen\nyears pass for Abraham with a close relationship developing between Abraham and\nIshmael.\u00a0 <\/span>He is now 99 years of age.\u00a0 <\/span>Genesis 17 unfolds for us the most expansive\nnature of the covenant that God is making with Abraham.\u00a0 <\/span>He makes it abundantly clear that His\ncovenant with Abraham will come through a son whom Sarah will bear (her age\nnotwithstanding)<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

That\nson will be named Isaac.\u00a0 <\/span>He will be the\nson of covenant \u2014 not Ishmael.\u00a0 <\/span>God\u2019s\ncommand to Abraham is, <\/span>\u201cI am the Almighty God, walk before me and be thou\nperfect.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>(The Hebrew text gives us El Shaddai\n\u2014 the God of more than enough \u2014 and this is the first time God has revealed\nHimself to Abraham this way.)<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nLord next appears on the scene in the form of three angels whom Abraham\ninstantly recognize as having come from the Lord.\u00a0 <\/span>He insists that they remain with him so that\nhe can prepare a feast for them.\u00a0 <\/span>They do\nso while Abraham\u2019s servant goes and kills a calf, dresses it and roasts\nit.\u00a0 <\/span>With bread, butter and milk, he\nserves his angelic guests and stands by under a tree while they eat.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Finally,\nthey call for Sarah to come out and Abraham tells them that she is in the tent.\u00a0 <\/span>The angelic visitors proceed to tell Abraham\nthat nine months hence, Sarah will bear a child.\u00a0 <\/span>Sarah, knowing that she is well past\nchild-bearing age gets tickled at the idea and begins to laugh within\nherself.\u00a0 <\/span>The angels reprove her for her\nlaughter and declare the following:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Genesis 18:14<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0\n<\/span><\/span>Is any thing<\/span> too hard for the LORD? At\nthe time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and\nSarah shall have a son.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And\nGod keeps His promise.\u00a0 <\/span>Sarah\u2019s youth is\nregenerated, her youthful beauty is restored, and sure enough she gets pregnant\nand brings forth Isaac nine months later.\u00a0\n<\/span>But something happens while Sarah is pregnant, and it is a demonstration\nthat Abraham is still not free from the fear he suffered with when he was in\nEgypt and told Sarah to tell everyone that she was his sister.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

They\ndecide to take a journey into the south where the Philistines are in\npower.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Abimelech,\nthe Philistine king, sees Sarah\u2019s beauty and immediately takes her, thinking\nthat he\u2019s going to have her for his wife.\u00a0\n<\/span>Once again, the Lord has to step in and demonstrate His goodness and\nblessing to Abraham.\u00a0 <\/span>Before Abimelech\ncan consummate his intentions to take her as his wife, the entire court of\nwomen \u2014 his servants and their wives \u2014 cease in childbearing.\u00a0 <\/span>We can read into the Hebrew text that\ndescribes what happens.\u00a0 <\/span>Women who may be\npregnant cease to continue in their pregnancies.\u00a0 <\/span>Everything comes to a halt.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

God\nspeaks to Abimelech and tells him that he has taken the wife of a prophet \u2014\nAbraham \u2014 and that if he doesn\u2019t restore her to him, he is a dead man, along\nwith all of his household.\u00a0 <\/span>Abimelech\nquickly obeys and gives Abraham a thousand pieces of silver at the same time.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Two\nmore tests are still in store for Abraham in order to bring him to the place\nwhere the goodness of the Lord will be firmly developed and implanted into his\ncharacter and nature.\u00a0 <\/span>This first test is\ngoing to be one of the toughest tests Abraham has faced to date.\u00a0 <\/span>This is a test that addresses human\ncompassion.\u00a0 <\/span>If the goodness of the Lord\nis to become our goodness, we cannot substitute human compassion for the Word\nof the Lord.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

When\nGod commands us to do something, we are prone at times to let our own reasoning\nget in the way.\u00a0 <\/span>If that which God\ncommands requires something that defies our own human-ness<\/span>\nand our personal feelings, His Word can require us to shut off our emotions and\ncompassion in order to obey.\u00a0 <\/span>And that\u2019s\nexactly what God is about to do with Abraham.\u00a0\n<\/span>Watch!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Genesis 21:9-14<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0\n<\/span><\/span>And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, which she had born\nunto Abraham, mocking. \u00a0<\/span><\/sup>Wherefore\nshe said unto Abraham, Cast out this bondwoman and her son: for the son of this\nbondwoman shall not be heir with my son, even<\/i> with Isaac.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And the thing was very grievous in Abraham\u2019s sight because of\nhis son. \u00a0<\/span><\/sup>And God said unto\nAbraham, Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of\nthy bondwoman; in all that Sarah hath said unto thee, hearken unto her voice;\nfor in Isaac shall thy seed be called. And also of the son of the bondwoman\nwill I make a nation, because he is<\/i> thy seed.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and took bread, and a\nbottle of water, and gave it<\/i> unto Hagar, putting it<\/i> on her\nshoulder, and the child, and sent her away: and she departed, and wandered in\nthe wilderness of Beersheba. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Abraham\nhad to really set aside his emotions and human compassion.\u00a0 <\/span>He argued with the Lord over this command,\nbut the Lord made it clear that He would bless Ishmael.\u00a0 <\/span>Ishmael could never the son of covenant since\nhe was the son of a bondwoman, but He would still bless Ishmael because he was\nAbraham\u2019s son.\u00a0 <\/span>There\u2019s a whole lot\nrevealed in this that I don\u2019t have time to explore today, but it is critical\nfor us to understand that God knew the end from the beginning.\u00a0 <\/span>There was no way that the son of the flesh\ncould co-exist with the son of covenant.\u00a0\n<\/span>The two just don\u2019t mix!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Now\nAbraham faces the supreme test of his life.\u00a0\n<\/span>The Fear of Death, which he has suffered with, must<\/i><\/b> be\novercome!\u00a0 <\/span>It cannot continue in his life\nif the covenant is to be fulfilled.\u00a0 <\/span>It\ncannot continue for the blessing of the Lord to be manifested throughout the\ngenerations to come.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Genesis 22:1-19<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>And it came to\npass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him,\nAbraham: and he said, Behold, here<\/i> I am<\/i>.\u00a0 <\/span>And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son<\/i>\nIsaac, whom thou lovest<\/span>, and get thee into the land\nof Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains\nwhich I will tell thee of.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Let\nme break into this narrative to point out that the Hebrew word that the KJV\ntranslates as "tempt" actually means "to put to the\ntest."\u00a0 <\/span>God wasn't tempting Abraham.\u00a0 <\/span>He was putting to the test everything that\nhad been accomplished in Abraham's life up to this point. <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass,\nand took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood\nfor the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had\ntold him.\u00a0 <\/span>Then on the third day Abraham\nlifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off. \u00a0<\/span><\/sup>And Abraham said unto his young men,\nAbide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and\ncome again to you.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it<\/i>\nupon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they\nwent both of them together. \u00a0<\/span><\/sup>And\nIsaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am<\/i>\nI, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is<\/i> the\nlamb for a burnt offering? \u00a0<\/span><\/sup>And\nAbraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so\nthey went both of them together. \u00a0<\/span><\/sup>And\nthey came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar\nthere, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the\naltar upon the wood. \u00a0<\/span><\/sup>And\nAbraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and\nsaid, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am<\/i> I. \u00a0<\/span><\/sup>And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the\nlad, neither do thou any thing<\/span> unto him: for now I\nknow that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son<\/i>\nfrom me. \u00a0<\/span><\/sup>And Abraham lifted\nup his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him<\/i> a ram caught in a thicket\nby his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt\noffering in the stead of his son. \u00a0<\/span><\/sup>And\nAbraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh: as it is said to<\/i>\nthis day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And the angel of the LORD called unto Abraham out of heaven the\nsecond time, \u00a0<\/span><\/sup>And said, By\nmyself have I sworn, saith the LORD, for because thou hast done this thing, and\nhast not withheld thy son, thine only son<\/i>: \u00a0<\/span><\/sup>That in blessing I will bless thee, and\nin multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the\nsand which is<\/i> upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of\nhis enemies; And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed;\nbecause thou hast obeyed my voice. \u00a0<\/span><\/sup>So\nAbraham returned unto his young men, and they rose up and went together to\nBeersheba; and Abraham dwelt at Beersheba.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I\nwatched this happen when the Lord took me into Abraham\u2019s life to watch things\nunfold.\u00a0 <\/span>The wheels were turning in his\nhead when the Lord spoke to Him and instructed him to take Isaac and offer him\nup to the Lord as a burnt sacrifice.\u00a0\n<\/span>Every argument the mind can construct went through his thoughts.\u00a0 <\/span>But something has developed between God and\nAbraham by this time.\u00a0 <\/span>Isaac is roughly\n30 years of age.\u00a0 <\/span>God speaks.\u00a0 <\/span>Abraham obeys.\u00a0 <\/span>His obedience is almost automatic.\u00a0 <\/span>But that doesn\u2019t mean that his mind isn\u2019t\narguing against this.\u00a0 <\/span>Nevertheless, he\ncan\u2019t help himself.\u00a0 <\/span>God has never failed\nto perform exactly what He said He would do.\u00a0\n<\/span>And that\u2019s what rules Abraham\u2019s spirit!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

By\nthe time they get to the base of the mountains of Moriah, something has\nhappened in him.\u00a0 <\/span>For the first time, he\nis going to speak the Word of the Lord.\u00a0\n<\/span>Faith is going to come forth.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the\nplace afar off. \u00a0<\/span><\/sup>And Abraham\nsaid unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go\nyonder and worship, and come again to you.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

You\nsee it, don\u2019t you?\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>I\nand the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again unto you. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>And that\u2019s despite the fact that God has\ninstructed him to offer Isaac as a sacrifice!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Paul\ntells us the following in Hebrews 11.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Hebrews 11:17-19:<\/span><\/u><\/b>\u00a0\n<\/span><\/span>By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he\nthat had received the promises offered up his only begotten son<\/i>, Of whom\nit was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called: Accounting that God was<\/i>\nable to raise him<\/i> up, even from the dead; from whence also he received\nhim in a figure.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Still,\nyou had to see the resolute trudge that Abraham made as he climbed the hill\nwith Isaac.\u00a0 <\/span>What he spoke to the\nservants was absolutely fixed in his spirit when Isaac spoke to him.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father:\nand he said, Here am<\/i> I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the\nwood: but where is<\/i> the lamb for a burnt offering? \u00a0<\/span><\/sup>And Abraham said, My son, God will\nprovide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them\ntogether.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nFear of Death is literally being burned out of Abraham as he makes this\njourney.\u00a0 <\/span>And it is going to confront him\none last time as he and Isaac build the altar and Isaac is bound and laid upon\nthe altar.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And they came to the place which God had told him of; and\nAbraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his\nson, and laid him on the altar upon the wood. \u00a0<\/span><\/sup>And Abraham stretched forth his hand,\nand took the knife to slay his son.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and\nsaid, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am<\/i> I. \u00a0<\/span><\/sup>And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the\nlad, neither do thou any thing<\/span> unto him: for now I\nknow that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son<\/i>\nfrom me.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n\n

Have\nto tell you that I wept when I watched this unfold.\u00a0 <\/span>Seeing the provision of the ram in the\nthicket, seeing the sacrifice take place with the ram in Isaac\u2019s place, and\nunderstanding the prophetic significance of all that was unfolding gripped me\nin ways I don\u2019t know how to put into words!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

All\nof this unfolded within view of the citadel that Shem\/Melchizedek had built for\nhis bride hundreds of years prior.\u00a0 <\/span>(In\nfact, Shem was still in residence when Abraham prepared to offer Isaac.)\u00a0 <\/span>All of this unfolded where, many hundreds of\nyears in the future, David would build his tabernacle.\u00a0 <\/span>All of this unfolded where Jesus would be\ncrucified as the lamb that was slain from before the foundations of the\nearth.\u00a0 <\/span>Prophecy was unfolding visually.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In\nthe past three weeks, we've mostly focused on the picture of God's\ngoodness.\u00a0 <\/span>Next week, we'll show you His\nmercy -- perhaps from a different perspective than you've ever considered.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The goodness of the Lord had been perfected in\nAbraham, and it would follow him all the days of his life.\u00a0 <\/span>That, folks, is what God has been doing in\nus!\u00a0 <\/span>Where we are today is a product of\nwhat God has done in us, where He has led us in the Paths of Righteousness, how\nwe have responded to His voice, how we have set aside our human emotions in\norder to obey, how we, too, have walked through the Valley of the Shadow of\nDeath in order to be set free from the Fear of Death, and how we have\nexperienced the constant verity and integrity of God\u2019s Word to us \u2014 no matter\nour failures, and the frequent getting-in-the-way of our flesh.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

At this point, Surely the goodness of the Lord will\nfollow us all the days of our lives.\u00a0 <\/span>It\nhas been ingrained in us.\u00a0 <\/span>It has become\npart and parcel of our nature.\u00a0 <\/span>We don\u2019t\nknow how to live or act any differently.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

But there\u2019s still more.\u00a0 <\/span>The goodness of the Lord doesn\u2019t function\nalone.\u00a0 <\/span>There is another companion facet\nof the Lord that accompanies it.\u00a0 <\/span>The two\nfunction side-by-side, hand-in-hand together.\u00a0\n<\/span>That\u2019s the mercy of the Lord!\u00a0\n<\/span>It\u2019s not just goodness; it is that the goodness and mercy follow us all\nthe days of our lives.\u00a0 <\/span>Next week, we\nwill talk about the sure mercies of the Lord.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n
