 <\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

We were just getting\nstarted last week in the picture of God's goodness and mercy in the life of\nAbraham, and the constant display of that goodness and mercy as Abraham slowly\nbut surely overcame the fears that had so programmed his life during his early\nyears in Ur of the Chaldees, and the subsequent 25 years he spent in Haran\nprior to his father's death.\u00a0 <\/span>Let's pick\nup this narrative where we left off last week.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

Before\nGod can continue with his development in Abraham\u2019s life, there must now be a\nseparation between he and his nephew, Lot.\u00a0\n<\/span>Lot is not part of the covenant, and Lot cannot participate in what God\nis about to unfold.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

As\nwe see what happens, it is clear why Lot could not be a participant in that\ncovenant and the blessing and approval of God that would come with it.\u00a0 <\/span>As is always true when you have a\nrelationship \u2014 particularly a family relationship \u2014 with someone who is\nunresponsive to the things of God, strife and division take place.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Genesis 13:7-13<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0\n<\/span><\/span>And there was a strife between the herdsmen of Abram\u2019s cattle\nand the herdsmen of Lot\u2019s cattle: and the Canaanite and the Perizzite dwelled\nthen in the land.\u00a0 <\/span>And Abram said unto\nLot, Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my\nherdsmen and thy herdsmen; for we be<\/i> brethren.\u00a0 <\/span>Is<\/i> not the whole land before thee?\nseparate thyself, I pray thee, from me: if thou wilt take<\/i> the left hand,\nthen I will go to the right; or if thou depart<\/i> to the right hand, then I\nwill go to the left.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan,\nthat it was<\/i> well watered every where<\/span>, before\nthe LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even<\/i> as the garden of the LORD,\nlike the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar.\u00a0 <\/span>Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan;\nand Lot journeyed east: and they separated themselves the one from the other.\u00a0 <\/span>Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot\ndwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched his<\/i> tent toward\nSodom.\u00a0 <\/span>But the men of Sodom were<\/i>\nwicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Now,\nwith the separation of Lot from Abraham, a new dimension in the realm of the\nSpirit is going to unfold for him.\u00a0 <\/span>Great\nchange is taking place.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Genesis 13:14-18<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0\n<\/span><\/span>And the LORD said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from\nhim, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward,\nand southward, and eastward, and westward:\u00a0\n<\/span>For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy\nseed for ever.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth: so that if a\nman can number the dust of the earth, then<\/i> shall thy seed also be\nnumbered.\u00a0 <\/span>Arise, walk through the land\nin the length of it and in the breadth of it; for I will give it unto\nthee.\u00a0 <\/span>Then Abram removed his<\/i>\ntent, and came and dwelt in the plain of Mamre, which is<\/i> in Hebron, and\nbuilt there an altar unto the LORD.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And\nfor the third time in Abraham\u2019s adventures, we see worship.\u00a0 <\/span>The first time was when he first arrived in\nthe land of Canaan.\u00a0 <\/span>The second time was\nwhen he returned from Egypt.\u00a0 <\/span>Now, with\nthe promise of God and an expansion of God\u2019s covenant with him unfolding, he\nbuilds an altar again \u2014 smack dab in the middle of the land of the Amorites, a\npeople who were, perhaps, among the most wicked and evil of the nations\ninhabiting the land; and there he establishes a monument of worship to the\nAlmighty God!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Without\nreciting all of the details of Genesis 14, we see that there has been real\nprogress in Abraham\u2019s deliverance from the Fear of Death.\u00a0 <\/span>It isn\u2019t complete yet, but \u2014 wow<\/i><\/b>\u2014\nwhat a demonstration!\u00a0 <\/span>A holy boldness\nhas been developing in his character because of the constant demonstration of\nGod\u2019s presence with him.\u00a0 <\/span>It is also a\npicture of what God has been doing in our lives as we have followed the Lord in\nthese Paths of Righteousness.\u00a0 <\/span>His\ngoodness is <\/i><\/b>developing in us!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

What\nfollows is a narrative of the four most powerful kings of the earth joining\nforces together and making war against the king of Sodom.\u00a0 <\/span>Four kings of the Amalekites, the Hittites,\nthe Amorites and the Hivites join forces with the king of Sodom to fight in\nthis war.\u00a0 <\/span>A slaughter takes place of\nunimaginable proportions with families many of the giants in the land being\ntaken and killed: the Rephaims, the Zuzims, the Emims and the Horites.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In\nthe process of the unfolding war, the king of Sodom is taken captive, along\nwith Lot, his wealth and substance, along with the wealth and substance of\nSodom.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

A\nyoung man escapes the battle to tell Abraham about what has just taken\nplace.\u00a0 <\/span>The holy boldness of the Lord\nrises up in Abraham.\u00a0 <\/span>Brother, has\nsomething ever happened to him by this time!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Over\nthe years, Abraham has developed and trained a household of servants who are\nskilled warriors: 318 of them!\u00a0 <\/span>In what\nwould normally appear to be a suicide mission, he takes those servants and\nchases after the four kings who\u2019ve taken Lot captive.\u00a0 <\/span>And let\u2019s not forget that these are easily\nthe most powerful kings on the planet at that time.\u00a0 <\/span>Sounds nuts, doesn\u2019t it?\u00a0 <\/span>But the Lord is with him.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Genesis\n14:17 tells us that Abraham and his 318 servants literally slaughtered those\nfour most powerful kings and their armies.\u00a0\n<\/span>David sure understood the principle when he wrote the following.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Psalm 91:7-8<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>A\nthousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but<\/i>\nit shall not come nigh thee.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Only with thine eyes\nshalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Moses, likewise, understood what God had\ndone with Abraham when he wrote this:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Deuteronomy 32:30-32<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>How\nshould one chase a thousand, and two put ten thousand to flight, except their\nRock had sold them, and the LORD had shut them up?\u00a0 <\/span>For their rock is<\/i> not as our Rock,\neven our enemies themselves being<\/i> judges.\u00a0 <\/span>For their vine is<\/i> of the vine of\nSodom, and of the fields of Gomorrah: their grapes are<\/i> grapes of gall,\ntheir clusters are<\/i> bitter:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Part\nof the description of the Hebrew, <\/span>toob<\/span><\/i><\/b>, translated\n\u201cgoodness,\u201d is \u201cKingdom.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Abraham\nhad the Kingdom of God working with him when he went out against those kings\nand their armies with only 318 servants.\u00a0\n<\/span>God had positively shut up and shut off the military might of those\narmies when Abraham came up against them.\u00a0\n<\/span>They were powerless against the might of God\u2019s Kingdom!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Abraham\nreturns from the battle after recovering Lot, along with the king of Sodom and\nwe see another expansion of the blessing of the Lord and His covenant with\nAbraham.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Genesis 14:18-20<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0\n<\/span><\/span>And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and\nhe was<\/i> the priest of the most high God.\u00a0\n<\/span>And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be<\/i> Abram of the most high\nGod, possessor of heaven and earth:\u00a0 <\/span>And\nblessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand.\nAnd he (Abraham) gave him (Melchizedek) tithes of all.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Notice\nthat Melchizedek brings bread and wine to Abraham.\u00a0 <\/span>These are the elements of covenant and they\nare the manifestation of a rich blessing.\u00a0\n<\/span>I don\u2019t want to get off-track here, but it is really incredible to me\nwhen I look back and see that Shem (who is Melchizedek) was the recipient of\nthe blessing following the flood.\u00a0\n<\/span>Whereas God pronounced a curse on the seed of Ham because of his\nhomosexual act against his father, Noah (see Genesis 9:21-27),\u00a0 <\/span>the blessing is pronounced on Shem and on his\nseed.\u00a0 <\/span>Abraham is the 10th generation\ndescendant of Shem.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Genesis\n15 expands again the covenant God made with Abraham.\u00a0 <\/span>We continue to see the progression with\nAbraham\u2019s development in his walk with the Lord and the growth of God\u2019s\ngoodness in Abraham.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Genesis 15:2-6<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>And Abram\nsaid, Lord GOD, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward\nof my house is<\/i> this Eliezer of Damascus?\u00a0\n<\/span>And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born\nin my house is mine heir.\u00a0 <\/span>And, behold,\nthe word of the LORD came<\/i> unto him, saying, This shall not be thine\nheir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine\nheir.\u00a0 <\/span>And he brought him forth abroad,\nand said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number\nthem: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for\nrighteousness.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Now\nthe Lord prepares Abraham for a dimension of His covenant with Abraham and\ninstructs him to do the following:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Genesis 15:7-11 (NASB)<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>And He said to him,\n\u201cI am the LORD who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans, to give you this\nland to possess it.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

He said, \u201cO Lord GOD, how may I know that I will possess it?\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

So He said to him, \u201cBring Me a three year old heifer, and a\nthree year old female goat, and a three year old ram, and a turtledove, and a\nyoung pigeon.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n\n

Then he brought all these to Him and cut them in two, and laid\neach half opposite the other; but he did not cut the birds. The birds of prey\ncame down upon the carcasses, and Abram drove them away.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\ncovenant that God has made with Abraham now takes on a physical demonstration\nwith an illustration that Abraham will never forget, and something that will be\na constant visual in his memory.\u00a0 <\/span>Watch\nwhat the Lord does.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Genesis 15:12-21 (NASB)<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>Now\nwhen the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and behold, terror and<\/i>\ngreat darkness fell upon him.\u00a0 <\/span>God<\/i>\nsaid to Abram,\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cKnow for certain that\nyour descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, where they\nwill be enslaved and oppressed four hundred years. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/sup>But I will also judge\nthe nation whom they will serve, and afterward they will come out with many\npossessions.\u00a0 <\/span>As for you, you shall go to\nyour fathers in peace; you will be buried at a good old age.\u00a0 <\/span>Then in the fourth generation they will\nreturn here, for the iniquity of the Amorite is not yet complete.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

It came about when the sun had set, that it was very dark, and\nbehold, there appeared<\/i> a smoking oven and a flaming torch which passed\nbetween these pieces. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/sup>On that day the LORD\nmade a covenant with Abram, saying,<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u201cTo your descendants I have given this land, From the river of\nEgypt as far as the great river, the river Euphrates: the Kenite and the\nKenizzite and the Kadmonite and the Hittite and the Perizzite and the Rephaim\nand the Amorite and the Canaanite and the Girgashite and the Jebusite.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nHebrew metaphors abound in these verses.\u00a0\n<\/span>The smoking oven and the flaming torch are a picture of the passion of\nthe Lord.\u00a0 <\/span>HE is the one who is\nfulfilling every part of this covenant \u2014 including the part that Abraham might\nhave normally played in it, but couldn\u2019t because he was ineligible.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nsignificance of what God has done here will never be lost on Abraham because he\nunderstands the nature of covenant and realizes that God is performing\nsomething on his behalf that is absolutely supernatural.\u00a0 <\/span>The goodness of the Lord towards Abraham is\npreparing him, not only for the years to follow in Abraham\u2019s life, but also for\nthe generations to come \u2014 including all of us who follow and walk in that same\nfaith that Abraham did as he believed God.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nyears pass.\u00a0 <\/span>Abraham is now 86 years\nold.\u00a0 <\/span>He sees nothing that evidences the\ncovenant and promises that God made to him.\u00a0\n<\/span>And he falls into a trap.\u00a0 <\/span>Sarah\nconvinces him that he must do something in order to see the fulfillment of the\ncovenant.\u00a0 <\/span>After all, God helps them that\nhelp themselves!\u00a0 <\/span>Right?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Hogwash!\u00a0 <\/span>(Excuse me, but God help them that get caught\nhelping themselves!)<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And\nSarah (still Sarai at this time) convinces Abraham to take her maid, Hagar, as\na concubine, have a child with her who will become Sarah\u2019s child.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We\nall know the story of Ishmael, what a pain he turned out to be, and the\ncenturies of opposition and persecution his descendants became to the real\ncovenant child of promise, Isaac.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

If\nit seems like I\u2019m belaboring this whole story, it\u2019s just because I want you to\nsee how God continues to generate His goodness in spite of Abraham\u2019s screw\nup.\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s the same goodness that is\neventually going to follow Abraham for the rest of his life, once his obedience\nto the Lord and his final act of faith in the face of death are complete.\u00a0 <\/span>Let\u2019s not forget.\u00a0 <\/span>Abraham has suffered with the Fear of Death\nhis whole life.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>God is about setting\nhim free from that fear \u2014 not only for Abraham\u2019s sake, but for the sake of his\ndescendants.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We\nwill finish this picture of Abraham next week and consider the goodness of the\nLord being demonstrated in him and with him.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n
