 <\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

For the past three\nweeks, we've looked at the "goodness" portion of David's statement\nthat, "Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my\nlife."\u00a0 <\/span>As you will see in the next\nfew weeks as we wrap up this Psalm 23 Adventure, goodness and mercy are so\nintertwined that it is difficult to separate them.\u00a0 <\/span>We will see how mercy and forgiveness are\nintertwined together.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

In order to understand the significance of\nDavid's statement that mercy would follow him all the days of his life, let's\nlook beyond David's life for a minute before we actually consider some of the\nevents that transpired throughout his years.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Take a look at something that Paul was\npreaching when he and Barnabas went to the city of Pisidia:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

In order to understand the significance of David\u2019s\nstatement that mercy would follow all the days of his life, let\u2019s look beyond\nDavid\u2019s life for a minute before we actually consider some of the events that\ntranspired for David.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Take a look at something that Paul was preaching\nwhen he and Barnabas went to the city of Pisidia.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Acts 13:32-24<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>And we declare unto you glad tidings, how that the promise which\nwas made unto the fathers, God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children,\nin that he hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second\npsalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee.\u00a0 <\/span>And as concerning that he raised him up from\nthe dead, now<\/i> no more to return to corruption, he said on this wise, I\nwill give you the sure mercies of David.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

This\nis a startling statement when you juxtapose this against David\u2019s statement in\nthe 89th Psalm.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Psalm 89:1-4<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>I\nwill sing of the mercies of the LORD for ever: with my mouth will I make known\nthy faithfulness to all generations.\u00a0 <\/span>For\nI have said, Mercy shall be built up for ever<\/span>: thy\nfaithfulness shalt<\/span> thou establish in the very heavens.\u00a0 <\/span>I have made a covenant with my chosen, I have\nsworn unto David my servant,\u00a0 <\/span>Thy seed\nwill I establish for ever<\/span>, and build up thy throne to\nall generations.\u00a0 <\/span>Selah<\/o:p><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/i><\/p>\n\n

With\nthat in mind, how did we get to the place where the Lord speaks of the \u201csure mercies\nof David?\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>Let\u2019s go back to an event\nthat unfolds in his life in which he experiences the sure mercies of the Lord.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In\nII Samuel 11 and 12, we have the story of David and Bathsheba.\u00a0 <\/span>Everyone is pretty familiar with this story,\nso I don\u2019t need to recount the whole event here.\u00a0 <\/span>There are some hidden facts to this picture\nthat we do need to take a look at.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

First\nof all consider the rebuke that David receives of the Lord through the prophet,\nNathan.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

II\nSamuel 12:1-14: <\/span>And the LORD sent Nathan unto David. And he came unto him, and\nsaid unto him, There were two men in one city; the one rich, and the other\npoor.\u00a0 <\/span>The rich man<\/i> had exceeding\nmany flocks and herds: But the poor man<\/i> had nothing, save one little ewe\nlamb, which he had bought and nourished up: and it grew up together with him,\nand with his children; it did eat of his own meat, and drank of his own cup,\nand lay in his bosom, and was unto him as a daughter. \u00a0<\/span><\/sup>And there came a traveler unto the rich\nman, and he spared to take of his own flock and of his own herd, to dress for\nthe wayfaring man that was come unto him; but took the poor man\u2019s lamb, and\ndressed it for the man that was come to him.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n\n

And David\u2019s anger was greatly kindled against the man; and he\nsaid to Nathan, As<\/i> the LORD liveth, the man that hath done this thing<\/i>\nshall surely die: \u00a0<\/span><\/sup>And he\nshall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had\nno pity.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n\n

And Nathan said to David, Thou art<\/i> the man. Thus saith\nthe LORD God of Israel, I anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee\nout of the hand of Saul; And I gave thee thy master\u2019s house, and thy master\u2019s\nwives into thy bosom, and gave thee the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that\nhad been<\/i> too little, I would moreover have given unto thee such and such\nthings.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Wherefore hast thou despised the commandment of the LORD, to do\nevil in his sight? thou hast killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and hast\ntaken his wife to be<\/i> thy wife, and hast slain him with the sword of the\nchildren of Ammon.\u00a0 <\/span>Now therefore the\nsword shall never depart from thine house; because thou hast despised me, and\nhast taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be thy wife.\u00a0 <\/span>Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will raise up\nevil against thee out of thine own house, and I will take thy wives before\nthine eyes, and give them<\/i> unto thy neighbour, and he shall lie with thy\nwives in the sight of this sun.\u00a0 <\/span>For thou\ndidst it<\/i> secretly: but I will do this thing before all Israel, and\nbefore the sun.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And David said unto Nathan, I have sinned against the LORD. And\nNathan said unto David, The LORD also hath put away thy sin; thou shalt not\ndie.\u00a0 <\/span>Howbeit, because by this deed thou\nhast given great occasion to the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme, the child\nalso that is<\/i> born unto thee shall surely die.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nway this is recorded in II Samuel passes over David\u2019s real response to the Lord\nand the repentance that took place.\u00a0 <\/span>Take\na look at how he prays:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Psalm 51:1-13<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>Have\nmercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the\nmultitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly\nfrom mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.\u00a0\n<\/span>For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is<\/i> ever before\nme.\u00a0 <\/span><\/o:p><\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Against thee, thee\nonly, have I sinned, and done this<\/i> evil in thy sight: that thou mightest\nbe justified when thou speakest, and<\/i> be clear when thou judgest.\u00a0 <\/span>Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin\ndid my mother conceive me.\u00a0 <\/span>Behold, thou\ndesirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part<\/i> thou shalt\nmake me to know wisdom.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Purge me with hyssop,\nand I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.\u00a0 <\/span>Make me to hear joy and gladness; that<\/i>\nthe bones which<\/i> thou hast broken may rejoice.\u00a0 <\/span>Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all\nmine iniquities.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Create in me a clean\nheart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.\u00a0 <\/span>Cast me not away from thy presence; and take\nnot thy holy spirit from me.\u00a0 <\/span>Restore\nunto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy<\/i> free spirit. Then<\/i>\nwill I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

If\nthere was anyone who knew how to repent, it was David!\u00a0 <\/span>One thing I learned from him was the depth of\nhis sensitivity to the heart of the Lord.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

When\nhe heard the rebuke from Nathan, David felt the disappointment in God\u2019s\nheart.\u00a0 <\/span>That he grieved the Lord like he\ndid caused a response in him that \u2014 in my understanding \u2014 brought a depth of\nrepentance that many folks have yet to experience.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\ngreater the degree of our sensitivity to the Lord, the greater the reality of\nour repentance when we grieve the Lord.\u00a0\n<\/span>Allow me to share a couple of personal experiences to illustrate.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Most\nof you know that I was working with David Wilkerson in his Teen Challenge\noutreach in the San Francisco Bay area while I was attending Bethany Bible\nCollege.\u00a0 <\/span>I became engaged to a young\nlady who was also a student there.\u00a0 <\/span>David\nheard about the engagement and called us both to talk to us.\u00a0 <\/span>His word was a strong warning from the Lord.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u201cI\nforbid this marriage,\u201d he said.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cThis is\nnot God!\u00a0 <\/span>If you pursue this\nrelationship, it will end in disaster.\u00a0\n<\/span>God has not designed either of you for each other.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

He\nturned to the fianc\u00e9e and said, \u201cYoung lady, you are not equipped for the kind\nof ministry that God has called Regner to.\u00a0\n<\/span>You do not have that kind of calling on your life, and if you go through\nwith this marriage, you will both suffer consequences you don\u2019t want to face.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

At\nthat point in my life, my sensitivity to the Lord was greatly lacking.\u00a0 <\/span>I treated the warning instead as unwanted\ninterference.\u00a0 <\/span>Neither did I respect the\nprophetic anointing in David at that time.\u00a0\n<\/span>I rebelled against the word, and not long thereafter, my fianc\u00e9e and I\neloped.\u00a0 <\/span>On the night of my wedding, I\nknew I\u2019d made the greatest mistake of my life.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Being\nin ministry, I was afraid of the consequences of a divorce or an annulment and\ndecided to grit my teeth and \u201cmake it work.\u201d\u00a0\n<\/span>Folks, you don\u2019t make things work that God has said, \u201cNo\u201d to.\u00a0 <\/span>Gritting your teeth and trying to make\nsomething work in opposition to the Word of the Lord only magnifies rebellion\nand stubbornness.\u00a0 <\/span>The results that it\nproduces are not wonderful!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Sixteen\nplus years later, after fasting and praying for three weeks and asking the Lord\nto \u201cfix\u201d our relationship (we\u2019d already been separated twice), I heard Him\nspeak in an almost audible voice saying, \u201cI don\u2019t change my mind.\u00a0 <\/span>I do not say, \u201cYes\u201d to something I\u2019ve already\nsaid \u201cNo\u201d to.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

By\nthis time, the sensitivity in my spirit to the heart of the Lord had increased\nenormously.\u00a0 <\/span>For the first time, I felt\nthe grief of the Lord over my disobedience.\u00a0\n<\/span>The weeping that followed was genuine repentance and a crying out for\nmercy.\u00a0 <\/span>Without getting into a lot of\ndetail, less than two years later, our third separation took place and divorce\nfollowed soon thereafter.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

You\nwill appreciate my understanding for the sure mercies of the Lord when I talk\nabout the gift that He gave to me in Della.\u00a0\n<\/span>When He joined the two of us together, for the first time in my life I\nexperienced real joy in marriage.\u00a0 <\/span>I\nunderstood the concept of being joined by the Lord, and the significance of\nJesus\u2019 statement in Matthew 19:6, <\/span>\u201cWhat God hath joined\ntogether, let not man put asunder.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Far\ntoo many marriages are marriages of convenience, marriages whose origins are in\nlust, \u201cshotgun marriages\u201d \u2014 you get the picture.\u00a0 <\/span>They are not marriages where the Lord has\njoined two people together.\u00a0\n<\/span>Unfortunately, the body of Christ has had little teaching on the true\nconcept of marriage and what it means to be joined together by the Lord.\u00a0 <\/span>Many marriages that are not put together by\nthe Lord have lasted but only because of the mercies of the Lord being extended\nto them in their ignorance of His perfect will in their lives.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

OK.\u00a0 <\/span>That was a bit of a rabbit trail, but it was\nand is borne out of my own coming to understand the sure mercies of the Lord in\nthe face of sheer stupidity and stubbornness.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

One\nmore event occurred many years later in which I learned again the sure mercies\nof the Lord.\u00a0 <\/span>This was a totally\ndifferent kind of situation, but it took place in the face of my compromising\nthe Word of the Lord.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In\nthe early 1990\u2019s, Della and I had developed a relationship with a couple.\u00a0 <\/span>He was one of these computer geniuses who\ncreated massive server arrays for big corporations.\u00a0 <\/span>He was also something of an entrepreneur and\ngot into a business promoting alleged health products.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nLord sent me to him one day to warn him about the dangers of one of the\nspecific products he was promoting.\u00a0 <\/span>It\nhappened to be something that he was making a lot of money with.\u00a0 <\/span>Up to this point, our relationship with one\nanother had been open, warm and as connected as any friends can be.\u00a0 <\/span>The Word that the Lord gave me to share with\nhim was that this one particular product he was promoting had hidden dangers in\nit and that he needed to cease promoting it; that future liabilities against\nhim could result if he continued.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

When\nthe Lord sent me to share that Word with him, I did not know how accurate it\nwas.\u00a0 <\/span>It was several years later that I\nlearned from a physician in Houston that there were many deaths and\/or severe\nphysical consequences resulting from the long-term usage of that product.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In\nany case, the warning was not received and it ultimately resulted in division\nbetween us and other families with whom we fellowshipped.\u00a0 <\/span>Over the course of a year or so, the division\nincreased and the resulting tension with some of the other families caused them\nto come to me and ask if there was some way I could breach the gap and heal the\ndivision.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

A\ncouple more months went by and we were invited to a wedding in which our\nerstwhile friend was a participant.\u00a0 <\/span>In\nfact, we were asked if we would spend the night at their home in Seattle (we\nlived just out of Spokane at the time) and use that opportunity to try and heal\nthe breach.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We\nagreed.\u00a0 <\/span>After the wedding, we were\ntalking in their home and I tried to come up with a way to \u201cfix things.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>In the process, I watered down the Word that\nthe Lord had given me to share.\u00a0 <\/span>It was a\ncase of human compassion getting in the way of what God was saying.\u00a0 <\/span>The Word of warning that God had given was\nnot given in any way to bring hurt but rather to protect from future\nconsequences.\u00a0 <\/span>My feeble attempt at\nresolving the issue didn\u2019t work.\u00a0 <\/span>It may\nhave mollified things momentarily, but the warning was still there, and it was\nreal.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(The\nreal truth of it was that despite my attempt to \u201cfix things\u201d and heal the\nbreach, it didn\u2019t produce any change in our broken relationship, our erstwhile\nfriend ignored the warning, and some ten years later died, still in a place of\nrebellion against multiple warnings from the Lord.)<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

That\nnight when I went to bed, I couldn\u2019t sleep.\u00a0\n<\/span>I received a stern rebuke from the Lord, the likes of which Nathan, the\nprophet, might have delivered to David.\u00a0\n<\/span>The essence of the Word of the Lord to me was, \u201cHow dare you water down\nand compromise the Word I\u2019ve given you to deliver?\u00a0 <\/span>When I give you something to deliver to\nsomeone, you don\u2019t get to try and make it palatable out of your compassion for\nthem!\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Whewww!!\u00a0 <\/span>That was one sleepless night.\u00a0 <\/span>I felt the anger of the Lord, but at the same\ntime I felt His mercy when I repented and vowed to never again <\/i><\/b>alter\nin any way the Word He gave me to deliver to someone.\u00a0 <\/span>Della and I couldn\u2019t wait to get out of there\nand get back home.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

It\nwas more than one lesson learned that night, but once again I saw and\nexperienced the mercy of the Lord.\u00a0 <\/span>It is\nthis kind of repeated thing that occurs in our lives that brings us to the\nplace where God\u2019s mercy becomes our mercy.In order to understand the significance of David\u2019s statement that mercy\nwould follow all the days of his life, let\u2019s look beyond David\u2019s life for a\nminute before we actually consider some of the events that transpired for\nDavid.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n
