off last week and see how Jesus viewed the concept of\nmercy.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus equated mercy with\nforgiveness -- and that's a concept that really has gotten lost in today's\nsociety.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>What you are going to see\nunfold in today's narrative is absolutely stunning.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>This ought to help you understand why the\nLord refers to the &quot;sure mercies of David.&quot;<\/span><\/b><b\nstyle='mso-bidi-font-weight:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\n\"Book style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><b><u><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Matthew 18:21-22<\/span><\/u><\/b><span style='font-size:\n13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>:<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\n<\/span><\/span><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Bernard MT Condensed\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#A50021'>Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother\nsin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? <sup><span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0<\/span><\/sup>Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto\nthee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Is\nthat mercy, or is that mercy?<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>It is also\na picture of forgiveness in a dimension our society is totally oblivious\nto.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Mercy is also a byproduct of\npatience and understanding \u2014 and that, as well, is something our society just\ndoesn\u2019t get.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:black'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Let\u2019s\nget back to David, and why he could say, <\/span><span style='font-size:13.0pt;\nfont-family:\"Bernard MT Condensed\",\"serif\";color:#A50021'>\u201cSurely goodness and\nmercy shall follow me all the days of my life.\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Consider\nthe following event that occurred when David spoke to Nathan, the prophet.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><b><u><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>II Samuel 7:2-3<\/span><\/u><\/b><span style='font-size:\n13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>:<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\n<\/span><\/span><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Bernard MT Condensed\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#A50021'>That the king said unto Nathan the prophet, See now, I dwell in\nan house of cedar, but the ark of God dwelleth within curtains.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>And Nathan said to the king, Go, do all that <i>is<\/i>\nin thine heart; for the LORD <i>is<\/i> with thee.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Do\nyou see the picture of what has developed in David?<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>His primary concern is not what he gets from\nthe Lord, but what the Lord gets from him.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\n<\/span>This, after all, is what the real heart of worship is like.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Worship is not about what we get from God,\nbut what He receives from us.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Nathan,\nof course, sees that heart in David, and because he, too, has that same heart,\nhe responds in kind.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>The Lord, however,\nhas a different plan for David, and that plan is going to unfold much\ndifferently than David sees at that moment.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><b><u><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>II Samuel 7:4-17<\/span><\/u><\/b><span style='font-size:\n13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>:<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\n<\/span><\/span><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Bernard MT Condensed\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#A50021'>And it came to pass that night, that the word of the LORD came\nunto Nathan, saying, Go and tell my servant David, Thus saith the LORD, Shalt\nthou build me an house for me to dwell in?<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\n<\/span>Whereas I have not dwelt in <i>any<\/i> house since the time that I\nbrought up the children of Israel out of Egypt, even to this day, but have\nwalked in a tent and in a tabernacle.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Bernard MT Condensed\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#A50021'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Bernard MT Condensed\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#A50021'>In all <i>the places<\/i> wherein I have walked with all the\nchildren of Israel spake I a word with any of the tribes of Israel, whom I\ncommanded to feed my people Israel, saying, Why build ye not me an house of\ncedar?<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal sheepcote, from following the\nsheep, to be ruler over my people, over Israel: <sup><span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0<\/span><\/sup>And I was with thee whithersoever thou\nwentest, and have cut telleth thee that he will make thee an house.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou\nshalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall\nproceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>He shall build an house for my name, and I\nwill stablish the throne of his kingdom <span class=SpellE>for ever<\/span>.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>I will be his father, and he shall be my son.\nIf he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, Condensed\",\"serif\";color:#A50021'>.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>And thine house and thy kingdom shall be\nestablished for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for\never.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>According to all these words, and\naccording to all this vision, so did Nathan speak unto David.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\";\ncolor:black'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>If\never there was an event that would even more firmly establish the mercies of\nthe Lord in David, this was it!<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>And we\nsee that mercy in action in a series of events that take place.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Watch!<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>II\nSamuel 13 gives us an unfolding picture of an event in which one of David\u2019s\nsons, Amnon, rapes his sister, Tamar.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\n<\/span>Absalom, of course, had a hidden motive of his own, and that motive was\nrevenge against his brother.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>We\nare told that Absalom invited Amnon to what amounted to a party in which his\nservants would be told to watch when Amnon would have gotten himself drunk with\nthe wine.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>At an appointed moment when\nAmnon would be defenseless because of his drunkenness, the servants were\ncommanded to kill him.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p And <i>David<\/i> mourned for his son\nevery day.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>So Absalom fled, and went to <span\nclass=SpellE>Geshur<\/span>, and was there three years.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>And <i>the soul of<\/i> king David longed to\ngo forth unto Absalom: for he was comforted concerning Amnon, seeing he was\ndead.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>This\nis a remarkable story in that we see David with a heart of love and mercy still\nextended towards his son, Absalom.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>And\nthat mercy is going to be tested in the extreme.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>First, we see Absalom restored to favor with\nDavid and returned to Jerusalem.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>II\nSamuel 14:32-33<\/span><\/b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>:<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span style='font-size:13.0pt;\nfont-family:\"Bernard MT Condensed\",\"serif\";color:#A50021'>And Absalom answered\nJoab, Behold, I sent unto thee, saying, Come hither, that I may send thee to\nthe king, to say, Wherefore am I come from <span class=SpellE>Geshur<\/span>? <i>it\nhad been<\/i> good for me <i>to have been<\/i> there still: now therefore let me\nsee the king\u2019s face; and if there be <i>any<\/i> iniquity in me, let him kill\nme.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>So Joab came to the king, and told\nhim: and when he had called for Absalom, he came to the king, and bowed himself\non his face to the ground before the king: and the king kissed Absalom.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>You\u2019d\nthink that David\u2019s mercy extended to Absalom would have had a changing effect\non him.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>In fact, it did not.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Absalom took advantage of David\u2019s mercy.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>The fact that he had essentially gotten away\nwith murder only increased the rebellion and the arrogance that filled\nhim.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Watch what unfolds next.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><b><u><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>II Samuel 15:1-6<\/span><\/u><\/b><span style='font-size:\n13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>: <\/span><span style='font-size:\n13.0pt;font-family:\"Bernard MT Condensed\",\"serif\";color:#A50021'>And it came to\npass after this, that Absalom prepared him chariots and horses, and fifty men\nto run before him. <sup><span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0<\/span><\/sup>And\nAbsalom rose up early, and stood beside the way of the gate: and it was <i>so<\/i>,\nthat when any man that had a controversy came to the king for judgment, then\nAbsalom called unto him, and said, Of what city <i>art<\/i> thou? style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Do\nyou remember the story of Mephibosheth, the crippled son of Jonathan, whom\nDavid had found and brought into the palace?<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\n<\/span>He had feared for his life when he heard that his father and grandfather\nhad both been killed in battle and that David, his father\u2019s best friend, had\nbeen given the throne of Israel.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>He had\nfled to Lodebar (and that\u2019s a story all in itself) where David had found\nhim.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Mephibosheth joins the betrayal of\nDavid \u2014 or so it seems.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:black'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><b><u><span
