 <\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

Continuing on with the\npicture of the goodness and mercy of the Lord that follows us, let's pick up\ntoday where we left off last week and see how Jesus viewed the concept of\nmercy.\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus equated mercy with\nforgiveness -- and that's a concept that really has gotten lost in today's\nsociety.\u00a0 <\/span>What you are going to see\nunfold in today's narrative is absolutely stunning.\u00a0 <\/span>This ought to help you understand why the\nLord refers to the "sure mercies of David."<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

In order to understand the significance of David\u2019s\nstatement that mercy would follow all the days of his life, let\u2019s look beyond\nDavid\u2019s life for a minute before we actually consider some of the events that\ntranspired for David.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Take a look at something that Paul was preaching\nwhen he and Barnabas went to the city of Pisidia.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 In order to understand the significance of\nDavid\u2019s statement that mercy would follow all the days of his life, let\u2019s look\nbeyond David\u2019s life for a minute before we actually consider some of the events\nthat transpired for David.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Take a look at something that Paul was preaching\nwhen he and Barnabas went to the city of Pisidia.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Jesus\nexplained mercy and forgiveness like this when questioned by Peter.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Matthew 18:21-22<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0\n<\/span><\/span>Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother\nsin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? \u00a0<\/span><\/sup>Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto\nthee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Is\nthat mercy, or is that mercy?\u00a0 <\/span>It is also\na picture of forgiveness in a dimension our society is totally oblivious\nto.\u00a0 <\/span>Mercy is also a byproduct of\npatience and understanding \u2014 and that, as well, is something our society just\ndoesn\u2019t get.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Let\u2019s\nget back to David, and why he could say, <\/span>\u201cSurely goodness and\nmercy shall follow me all the days of my life.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Consider\nthe following event that occurred when David spoke to Nathan, the prophet.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

II Samuel 7:2-3<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0\n<\/span><\/span>That the king said unto Nathan the prophet, See now, I dwell in\nan house of cedar, but the ark of God dwelleth within curtains.\u00a0 <\/span>And Nathan said to the king, Go, do all that is<\/i>\nin thine heart; for the LORD is<\/i> with thee.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Do\nyou see the picture of what has developed in David?\u00a0 <\/span>His primary concern is not what he gets from\nthe Lord, but what the Lord gets from him.\u00a0\n<\/span>This, after all, is what the real heart of worship is like.\u00a0 <\/span>Worship is not about what we get from God,\nbut what He receives from us.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Nathan,\nof course, sees that heart in David, and because he, too, has that same heart,\nhe responds in kind.\u00a0 <\/span>The Lord, however,\nhas a different plan for David, and that plan is going to unfold much\ndifferently than David sees at that moment.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

II Samuel 7:4-17<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0\n<\/span><\/span>And it came to pass that night, that the word of the LORD came\nunto Nathan, saying, Go and tell my servant David, Thus saith the LORD, Shalt\nthou build me an house for me to dwell in?\u00a0\n<\/span>Whereas I have not dwelt in any<\/i> house since the time that I\nbrought up the children of Israel out of Egypt, even to this day, but have\nwalked in a tent and in a tabernacle.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In all the places<\/i> wherein I have walked with all the\nchildren of Israel spake I a word with any of the tribes of Israel, whom I\ncommanded to feed my people Israel, saying, Why build ye not me an house of\ncedar?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Now therefore so shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus\nsaith the LORD of hosts, I took thee from the sheepcote, from following the\nsheep, to be ruler over my people, over Israel: \u00a0<\/span><\/sup>And I was with thee whithersoever thou\nwentest, and have cut off all thine enemies out of thy sight, and have made\nthee a great name, like unto the name of the great men<\/i> that are<\/i>\nin the earth.\u00a0 <\/span>Moreover I will appoint a\nplace for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place\nof their own, and move no more; neither shall the children of wickedness\nafflict them any more<\/span>, as beforetime,\u00a0 <\/span>And as since the time that I commanded judges\nto be<\/i> over my people Israel, and have caused thee to rest from all thine\nenemies.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Also the LORD telleth thee that he will make thee an house.\u00a0 <\/span>And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou\nshalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall\nproceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom.\u00a0 <\/span>He shall build an house for my name, and I\nwill stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever<\/span>.\u00a0 <\/span>I will be his father, and he shall be my son.\nIf he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the\nstripes of the children of men:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

But my mercy shall not depart away from him, as I took it<\/i>\nfrom Saul, whom I put away before thee<\/span><\/u>.\u00a0 <\/span>And thine house and thy kingdom shall be\nestablished for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for\never.\u00a0 <\/span>According to all these words, and\naccording to all this vision, so did Nathan speak unto David.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

If\never there was an event that would even more firmly establish the mercies of\nthe Lord in David, this was it!\u00a0 <\/span>And we\nsee that mercy in action in a series of events that take place.\u00a0 <\/span>Watch!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

II\nSamuel 13 gives us an unfolding picture of an event in which one of David\u2019s\nsons, Amnon, rapes his sister, Tamar.\u00a0\n<\/span>David, of course, was more than angry at his son, but his son, Absalom,\nspoke peace to quiet things down.\u00a0\n<\/span>Absalom, of course, had a hidden motive of his own, and that motive was\nrevenge against his brother.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We\nare told that Absalom invited Amnon to what amounted to a party in which his\nservants would be told to watch when Amnon would have gotten himself drunk with\nthe wine.\u00a0 <\/span>At an appointed moment when\nAmnon would be defenseless because of his drunkenness, the servants were\ncommanded to kill him.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

II Samuel 13:30-39<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>And\nit came to pass, while they were in the way, that tidings came to David,\nsaying, Absalom hath slain all the king\u2019s sons, and there is not one of them\nleft.\u00a0 <\/span>Then the king arose, and tare his\ngarments, and lay on the earth; and all his servants stood by with their\nclothes rent.\u00a0 <\/span>And Jonadab, the son of\nShimeah David\u2019s brother, answered and said, Let not my lord suppose that<\/i>\nthey have slain all the young men the king\u2019s sons; for Amnon only is dead: for\nby the appointment of Absalom this hath been determined from the day that he\nforced his sister Tamar.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Now therefore let not my lord the king take the thing to his\nheart, to think that all the king\u2019s sons are dead: for Amnon only is dead.\u00a0 <\/span>But Absalom fled. And the young man that kept\nthe watch lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came much people\nby the way of the hill side behind him.\u00a0\n<\/span>And Jonadab said unto the king, Behold, the king\u2019s sons come: as thy\nservant said, so it is.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And it came to pass, as soon as he had made an end of speaking,\nthat, behold, the king\u2019s sons came, and lifted up their voice and wept: and the\nking also and all his servants wept very sore.\u00a0\n<\/span>But Absalom fled, and went to Talmai, the son of Ammihud<\/span>,\nking of Geshur<\/span>. And David<\/i> mourned for his son\nevery day.\u00a0 <\/span>So Absalom fled, and went to Geshur<\/span>, and was there three years.\u00a0 <\/span>And the soul of<\/i> king David longed to\ngo forth unto Absalom: for he was comforted concerning Amnon, seeing he was\ndead.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

This\nis a remarkable story in that we see David with a heart of love and mercy still\nextended towards his son, Absalom.\u00a0 <\/span>And\nthat mercy is going to be tested in the extreme.\u00a0 <\/span>First, we see Absalom restored to favor with\nDavid and returned to Jerusalem.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

II\nSamuel 14:32-33<\/span><\/b>:\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>And Absalom answered\nJoab, Behold, I sent unto thee, saying, Come hither, that I may send thee to\nthe king, to say, Wherefore am I come from Geshur<\/span>? it\nhad been<\/i> good for me to have been<\/i> there still: now therefore let me\nsee the king\u2019s face; and if there be any<\/i> iniquity in me, let him kill\nme.\u00a0 <\/span>So Joab came to the king, and told\nhim: and when he had called for Absalom, he came to the king, and bowed himself\non his face to the ground before the king: and the king kissed Absalom.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

You\u2019d\nthink that David\u2019s mercy extended to Absalom would have had a changing effect\non him.\u00a0 <\/span>In fact, it did not.\u00a0 <\/span>Absalom took advantage of David\u2019s mercy.\u00a0 <\/span>The fact that he had essentially gotten away\nwith murder only increased the rebellion and the arrogance that filled\nhim.\u00a0 <\/span>Watch what unfolds next.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

II Samuel 15:1-6<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>And it came to\npass after this, that Absalom prepared him chariots and horses, and fifty men\nto run before him. \u00a0<\/span><\/sup>And\nAbsalom rose up early, and stood beside the way of the gate: and it was so<\/i>,\nthat when any man that had a controversy came to the king for judgment, then\nAbsalom called unto him, and said, Of what city art<\/i> thou? And he said,\nThy servant is<\/i> of one of the tribes of Israel.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And Absalom said unto him, See, thy matters are<\/i> good and\nright; but there is<\/i> no man deputed<\/i> of the king to hear thee.\u00a0 <\/span>Absalom said moreover, Oh that I were made\njudge in the land, that every man which hath any suit or cause might come unto\nme, and I would do him justice!\u00a0 <\/span>And it\nwas so<\/i>, that when any man came nigh to him<\/i> to do him obeisance,\nhe put forth his hand, and took him, and kissed him. \u00a0<\/span><\/sup>And on this manner did Absalom to all\nIsrael that came to the king for judgment: so Absalom stole the hearts of the\nmen of Israel.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Amazingly,\nforty years go by with this behavior going on.\u00a0\n<\/span>David is busy with the affairs of the Kingdom, ruling in Jerusalem, and\nbecause there was no such thing as the Internet and the kind of instant\ncommunication we have today, he was unaware of what his son was conspiring to\ndo.\u00a0 <\/span>Absalom, full of deception and conspiracy,\nconvinces his father to let him go to Hebron to \u201cpay a vow.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

II Samuel 15:10-12<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>But\nAbsalom sent spies throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, As soon as ye\nhear the sound of the trumpet, then ye shall say, Absalom reigneth in\nHebron.\u00a0 <\/span>And with Absalom went two\nhundred men out of Jerusalem, that were<\/i> called; and they went in their\nsimplicity, and they knew not any thing<\/span>.\u00a0 <\/span>And Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite,\nDavid\u2019s counsellor, from his city, even<\/i> from Giloh, while he offered\nsacrifices. And the conspiracy was strong; for the people increased continually\nwith Absalom.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Next\nwe read that a messenger comes to David to tell him that his son has conspired\nto take the throne.\u00a0 <\/span>David realizes that\nhe must take immediate action to preserve the life of his household.\u00a0 <\/span>He calls them together and they begin a\ndeparture from Jerusalem to a safe haven.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

II Samuel 15: 23-30<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>And\nall the country wept with a loud voice, and all the people passed over: the\nking also himself passed over the brook Kidron, and all the people passed over,\ntoward the way of the wilderness.\u00a0 <\/span>And lo\nZadok also, and all the Levites were<\/i> with him, bearing the ark of the\ncovenant of God: and they set down the ark of God; and Abiathar went up, until\nall the people had done passing out of the city.\u00a0 <\/span>And the king said unto Zadok, Carry back the\nark of God into the city: if I shall find favour in the eyes of the LORD, he\nwill bring me again, and show me both<\/i> it, and his habitation:\u00a0 <\/span>But if he thus say, I have no delight in\nthee; behold, here am<\/i> I, let him do to me as seemeth good unto him.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The king said also unto Zadok the priest, Art not<\/i> thou a\nseer? return into the city in peace, and your two sons with you, Ahimaaz thy\nson, and Jonathan the son of Abiathar.\u00a0\n<\/span>See, I will tarry in the plain of the wilderness, until there come word\nfrom you to certify me.\u00a0 <\/span>Zadok therefore\nand Abiathar carried the ark of God again to Jerusalem: and they tarried\nthere.\u00a0 <\/span>And David went up by the ascent\nof mount<\/i> Olivet, and wept as he went up, and had his head covered, and\nhe went barefoot: and all the people that was<\/i> with him covered every man\nhis head, and they went up, weeping as they went up.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\npicture of betrayal against David by his own son that unfolds is prophetic of\nwhat is going to take place with Jesus, and it is important to see the\nunfolding of David\u2019s mercy in the face of this betrayal.\u00a0 <\/span>It isn\u2019t only David\u2019s son, Absalom, that has\nbetrayed him; one of David\u2019s closest friends and counselors, Ahithophel, is\namong the conspirators.\u00a0 <\/span>David is no\ndummy!\u00a0 <\/span>He knows that, except for the\nintervention of the Lord, this whole event is going to turn against him\nirreparably.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

II Samuel 15:31-37<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>And\none<\/i> told David, saying, Ahithophel is<\/i> among the conspirators with\nAbsalom. And David said, O LORD, I pray thee, turn the counsel of Ahithophel\ninto foolishness.\u00a0 <\/span>And it came to pass,\nthat when<\/i> David was come to the top of the mount<\/i>, where he\nworshipped God, behold, Hushai the Archite came to meet him with his coat rent,\nand earth upon his head:\u00a0 <\/span>Unto whom David\nsaid, If thou passest on with me, then thou shalt be a burden unto me:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

But if thou return to the city, and say unto Absalom, I will be\nthy servant, O king; as<\/i> I have been<\/i> thy father\u2019s servant\nhitherto, so will<\/i> I now also be<\/i> thy servant: then mayest thou for\nme defeat the counsel of Ahithophel.\u00a0 <\/span>And\nhast thou<\/i> not there with thee<\/span> Zadok<\/span> and Abiathar<\/span> the priests?\ntherefore it shall be, that<\/i> what thing soever thou shalt hear out of the\nking\u2019s house, thou shalt tell it<\/i> to Zadok and Abiathar the priests.\u00a0 <\/span>Behold, they have<\/i> there with them\ntheir two sons, Ahimaaz Zadok\u2019s son<\/i>, and Jonathan Abiathar\u2019s son<\/i>;\nand by them ye shall send unto me every thing<\/span> that ye\ncan hear.\u00a0 <\/span>So Hushai David\u2019s friend came\ninto the city, and Absalom came into Jerusalem.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Do\nyou remember the story of Mephibosheth, the crippled son of Jonathan, whom\nDavid had found and brought into the palace?\u00a0\n<\/span>He had feared for his life when he heard that his father and grandfather\nhad both been killed in battle and that David, his father\u2019s best friend, had\nbeen given the throne of Israel.\u00a0 <\/span>He had\nfled to Lodebar (and that\u2019s a story all in itself) where David had found\nhim.\u00a0 <\/span>Mephibosheth joins the betrayal of\nDavid \u2014 or so it seems.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

II Samuel 16:1-4<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>And when David\nwas a little past the top of the hill<\/i>, behold, Ziba the servant of\nMephibosheth met him, with a couple of asses saddled, and upon them two hundred\nloaves<\/i> of bread, and an hundred bunches of raisins, and an hundred of\nsummer fruits, and a bottle of wine.\u00a0 <\/span>And\nthe king said unto Ziba, What meanest thou by these?\u00a0 <\/span>And Ziba said, The asses be<\/i> for the\nking\u2019s household to ride on; and the bread and summer fruit for the young men\nto eat; and the wine, that such as be faint in the wilderness may drink.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And the king said, And where is<\/i> thy master\u2019s son?\u00a0 <\/span>And Ziba said unto the king, Behold, he\nabideth at Jerusalem: for he said, To day<\/span> shall the\nhouse of Israel restore me the kingdom of my father.\u00a0 <\/span>Then said the king to Ziba, Behold, thine are<\/i>\nall that pertained<\/i> unto Mephibosheth.\u00a0\n<\/span>And Ziba said, I humbly beseech thee that<\/i> I may find grace in thy\nsight, my lord, O king.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Are\nyou seeing this picture unfold?\u00a0 <\/span>This\nisn\u2019t simply the betrayal of David by his son, Absalom: this is a series of\nmultiple betrayals by people to whom David has shown mercy and grace.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We\nneed to stop at this point and finish this discussion next week.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n
