It has always been a\nsource of astonishment to me when I look at what God had developed in David's\nlife.\u00a0 <\/span>The fact that he could show mercy\nto his betrayers in the way that he did, and then show mercy again and again to\nthem in the face of their crimes against him is why, I believe, Jesus made it\nclear that if our brother offend us, we are to forgive seventy times seven --\nand that was in a single day.\u00a0 <\/span>When we\ncan arrive at that point, the mercies of the Lord indeed follow us all the days\nof our life.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

Watch\nwhat happens now with Absalom after David has forgiven him !<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

II Samuel 16:5-14<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>And when king\nDavid came to Bahurim, behold, thence came out a man of the family of the house\nof Saul, whose name was<\/i> Shimei, the son of Gera: he came forth, and\ncursed still as he came.\u00a0 <\/span>And he cast\nstones at David, and at all the servants of king David: and all the people and\nall the mighty men were<\/i> on his right hand and on his left.\u00a0 <\/span>And thus said Shimei when he cursed, Come\nout, come out, thou bloody man, and thou man of Belial: The LORD hath returned\nupon thee all the blood of the house of Saul, in whose stead thou hast reigned;\nand the LORD hath delivered the kingdom into the hand of Absalom thy son: and,\nbehold, thou art taken<\/i> in thy mischief, because thou art<\/i> a bloody\nman.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Then said Abishai the son of Zeruiah unto the king, Why should\nthis dead dog curse my lord the king? let me go over, I pray thee, and take off\nhis head.\u00a0 <\/span>And the king said, What have I\nto do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah? so let him curse, because the LORD hath\nsaid unto him, Curse David. Who shall then say, Wherefore hast thou done\nso?\u00a0 <\/span>And David said to Abishai, and to\nall his servants, Behold, my son, which came forth of my bowels, seeketh my life:\nhow much more now may this<\/i> Benjamite do it<\/i>? let him alone, and\nlet him curse; for the LORD hath bidden him.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

It may be that the LORD will look on mine affliction, and that\nthe LORD will requite<\/span> me good for his cursing this\nday.\u00a0 <\/span>And as David and his men went by\nthe way, Shimei went along on the hill\u2019s side over against him, and cursed as\nhe went, and threw stones at him, and cast dust.\u00a0 <\/span>And the king, and all the people that were<\/i>\nwith him, came weary, and refreshed themselves there.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Unbelievable\nmercy, isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 <\/span>Got the picture?\u00a0 <\/span>David is the real king of Israel, but because\nof the circumstances that have taken place, he has had to flee for his life.\u00a0 <\/span>Shimei comes out to curse him and throw rocks\nat him.\u00a0 <\/span>Abishai, one of David\u2019s\nsoldiers, is deeply offended and wants to immediately kill Shimei.\u00a0 <\/span>David stops him and says, \u201cMaybe God is\nallowing him to do this so that I can be blessed as a result in the future.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Wow!\u00a0 <\/span>That\u2019s mercy with a degree of understanding\nthat has long been missing from most folks\u2019 comprehension.\u00a0 <\/span>By now, you are seeing why God refers to \u201cthe\nsure mercies of David.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And\nthe betrayal and offenses against David just keep increasing!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

II Samuel 16:15-23<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>And\nAbsalom, and all the people the men of Israel, came to Jerusalem, and\nAhithophel with him.\u00a0 <\/span>And it came to\npass, when Hushai the Archite, David\u2019s friend, was come unto Absalom, that\nHushai said unto Absalom, God save the king, God save the king. \u00a0<\/span><\/sup>And Absalom said to Hushai, Is<\/i>\nthis thy kindness to thy friend? why wentest thou not with thy friend?\u00a0 <\/span>And Hushai said unto Absalom, Nay; but whom\nthe LORD, and this people, and all the men of Israel, choose, his will I be,\nand with him will I abide.\u00a0 <\/span>And again,\nwhom should I serve? should I<\/i> not serve<\/i> in the presence of his\nson? as I have served in thy father\u2019s presence, so will I be in thy presence.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Then said Absalom to Ahithophel, Give counsel among you what we\nshall do.\u00a0 <\/span>And Ahithophel said unto\nAbsalom, Go in unto thy father\u2019s concubines, which he hath left to keep the\nhouse; and all Israel shall hear that thou art abhorred of thy father: then\nshall the hands of all that are<\/i> with thee be strong.\u00a0 <\/span>So they spread Absalom a tent upon the top of\nthe house; and Absalom went in unto his father\u2019s concubines in the sight of all\nIsrael.\u00a0 <\/span>And the counsel of Ahithophel,\nwhich he counselled in those days, was<\/i> as if a man had inquired at the\noracle of God: so was<\/i> all the counsel of Ahithophel both with David and\nwith Absalom.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Finally!!\nThe tables are going to be turned against the betrayal and conspiracies \u2014 and\neven in the midst of what unfolds, the heart of David for mercy towards his son,\nAbsalom, is still on display.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

II Samuel 17:1-14<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>Moreover\nAhithophel said unto Absalom, Let me now choose out twelve thousand men, and I\nwill arise and pursue after David this night: And I will come upon him while he\nis<\/i> weary and weak handed, and will make him afraid: and all the people\nthat are<\/i> with him shall flee; and I will smite the king only: And I will\nbring back all the people unto thee: the man whom thou seekest is<\/i> as if\nall returned: so<\/i> all the people shall be in peace.\u00a0 <\/span>And the saying pleased Absalom well, and all\nthe elders of Israel.\u00a0 <\/span>Then said Absalom,\nCall now Hushai the Archite also, and let us hear likewise what he saith.\u00a0 <\/span>And when Hushai was come to Absalom, Absalom\nspake unto him, saying, Ahithophel hath spoken after this manner: shall we do after<\/i>\nhis saying? if not; speak thou.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And Hushai said unto Absalom, The counsel that Ahithophel hath\ngiven is<\/i> not good at this time.\u00a0\n<\/span>For, said Hushai, thou knowest thy father and his men, that they be<\/i>\nmighty men, and they be<\/i> chafed in their minds, as a bear robbed of her\nwhelps in the field: and thy father is<\/i> a man of war, and will not lodge\nwith the people.\u00a0 <\/span>Behold, he is hid now\nin some pit, or in some other<\/i> place: and it will come to pass, when some\nof them be overthrown at the first, that whosoever heareth it will say, There\nis a slaughter among the people that follow Absalom.\u00a0 <\/span>And he also that is<\/i> valiant, whose\nheart is<\/i> as the heart of a lion, shall utterly melt: for all Israel\nknoweth that thy father is<\/i> a mighty man, and they<\/i> which be<\/i>\nwith him are<\/i> valiant men.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Therefore I counsel that all Israel be generally gathered unto\nthee, from Dan even to Beersheba, as the sand that is<\/i> by the sea for\nmultitude; and that thou go to battle in thine own person.\u00a0 <\/span>So shall we come upon him in some place where\nhe shall be found, and we will light upon him as the dew falleth on the ground:\nand of him and of all the men that are<\/i> with him there shall not be left\nso much as one.\u00a0 <\/span>Moreover, if he be\ngotten into a city, then shall all Israel bring ropes to that city, and we will\ndraw it into the river, until there be not one small stone found there.\u00a0 <\/span>And Absalom and all the men of Israel said,\nThe counsel of Hushai the Archite is<\/i> better than the counsel of\nAhithophel. For the LORD had appointed to defeat the good counsel of\nAhithophel, to the intent that the LORD might bring evil upon Absalom.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Now,\nHushai \u2014 who has remained loyal to David \u2014 sends messengers to David to warn\nhim of Absalom\u2019s plan so that he will not be caught off guard.\u00a0 <\/span>Ahithophel, seeing that his counsel has been\nset aside, leaves the palace, goes home, sets his affairs in order, and then\nhangs himself.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

II Samuel 18:1-18<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>And David\nnumbered the people that were<\/i> with him, and set captains of thousands\nand captains of hundreds over them. And David sent forth a third part of the\npeople under the hand of Joab, and a third part under the hand of Abishai the\nson of Zeruiah, Joab\u2019s brother, and a third part under the hand of Ittai<\/span> the Gittite<\/span>. And the king\nsaid unto the people, I will surely go forth with you myself also. But the\npeople answered, Thou shalt not go forth: for if we flee away, they will not\ncare for us; neither if half of us die, will they care for us: but now thou\nart<\/i> worth ten thousand of us: therefore now it is<\/i> better that thou\nsuccour us out of the city.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And the king said unto them, What seemeth you best I will do.\nAnd the king stood by the gate side, and all the people came out by hundreds\nand by thousands. 5<\/sup>And the king commanded Joab and Abishai and\nIttai, saying, Deal<\/i> gently for my sake with the young man, even<\/i>\nwith Absalom. And all the people heard when the king gave all the captains\ncharge concerning Absalom. So the people went out into the field against\nIsrael: and the battle was in the wood of Ephraim; Where the people of Israel were\nslain before the servants of David, and there was there a great slaughter that\nday of twenty thousand men<\/i>. For the battle was there scattered over the\nface of all the country: and the wood devoured more people that day than the\nsword devoured.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And Absalom met the servants of David. And Absalom rode upon a\nmule, and the mule went under the thick boughs of a great oak, and his head\ncaught hold of the oak, and he was taken up between the heaven and the earth;\nand the mule that was<\/i> under him went away. And a certain man saw it<\/i>,\nand told Joab, and said, Behold, I saw Absalom hanged in an oak. And Joab said\nunto the man that told him, And, behold, thou sawest him<\/i>, and why didst\nthou not smite him there to the ground? and I would have given thee<\/span> ten shekels<\/i> of silver, and a girdle. And the\nman said unto Joab, Though I should receive a thousand shekels<\/i> of silver\nin mine hand, yet<\/i> would I not put forth mine hand against the king\u2019s\nson: for in our hearing the king charged thee and Abishai and Ittai, saying,\nBeware that none touch<\/i> the young man Absalom. Otherwise I should have\nwrought falsehood against mine own life: for there is no matter hid from the\nking, and thou thyself wouldest have set thyself against me<\/i>.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Then said Joab, I may not tarry thus with thee. And he took\nthree darts in his hand, and thrust them through the heart of Absalom, while he\nwas<\/i> yet alive in the midst of the oak. And ten young men that bare\nJoab\u2019s armour compassed about and smote Absalom, and slew him. And Joab blew\nthe trumpet, and the people returned from pursuing after Israel: for Joab held\nback the people. And they took Absalom, and cast him into a great pit in the\nwood, and laid a very great heap of stones upon him: and all Israel fled every one<\/span> to his tent. Now Absalom in his lifetime had\ntaken and reared up for himself a pillar, which is<\/i> in the king\u2019s dale:\nfor he said, I have no son to keep my name in remembrance: and he called the\npillar after his own name: and it is called unto this day, Absalom\u2019s place.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

When\nDavid hears what has taken place with Absalom, we again see his heart of mercy.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

II Samuel 18:31-33<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>And,\nbehold, Cushi came; and Cushi said, Tidings, my lord the king: for the LORD\nhath avenged thee this day of all them that rose up against thee.\u00a0 <\/span>And the king said unto Cushi, Is the young\nman Absalom safe? And Cushi answered, The enemies of my lord the king, and all\nthat rise against thee to do thee<\/i> hurt, be as that<\/i> young man is<\/i>.\u00a0 <\/span>And the king was much moved, and went up to\nthe chamber over the gate, and wept: and as he went, thus he said, O my son\nAbsalom, my son, my son Absalom! would God I had died for thee, O Absalom, my\nson, my son!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I\u2019m\nshortening the whole story because to get into all of the detail would get us\ninto things that don\u2019t directly bear on the pictures of mercy.\u00a0 <\/span>However, I want you to see one last\nevent.\u00a0 <\/span>David is returning to Jerusalem\nwith all that accompanied him, and the military troops that fought with him to\noverthrow Absalom\u2019s wickedness.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

II Samuel 19:16-23<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>And\nShimei the son of Gera, a Benjamite, which was<\/i> of Bahurim, hasted and\ncame down with the men of Judah to meet king David.\u00a0 <\/span>And there were<\/i> a thousand men of\nBenjamin with him, and Ziba the servant of the house of Saul, and his fifteen\nsons and his twenty servants with him; and they went over Jordan before the\nking.\u00a0 <\/span>And there went over a ferry boat\nto carry over the king\u2019s household, and to do what he thought good. And Shimei\nthe son of Gera fell down before the king, as he was come over Jordan;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And said unto the king, Let not my lord impute iniquity unto me,\nneither do thou remember that which thy servant did perversely the day that my\nlord the king went out of Jerusalem, that the king should take it to his\nheart.\u00a0 <\/span>For thy servant doth know that I\nhave sinned: therefore, behold, I am come the first this day of all the house\nof Joseph to go down to meet my lord the king.\u00a0\n<\/span>But Abishai the son of Zeruiah answered and said, Shall not Shimei be\nput to death for this, because he cursed the LORD\u2019S anointed?\u00a0 <\/span>And David said, What have I to do with you,\nye sons of Zeruiah, that ye should this day be adversaries unto me? shall there\nany man be put to death this day in Israel? for do not I know that I am<\/i>\nthis day king over Israel?\u00a0 <\/span>Therefore the\nking said unto Shimei, Thou shalt not die. And the king sware unto him.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

David\ncould easily have allowed Abishai to kill Shimei but once again, the mercy that\nhad become so much a part of David\u2019s character and makeup was on display.\u00a0 <\/span>One more time, another of David\u2019s sons \u2014 Adonijah,\nyounger brother to Absalom \u2014decides that he is going to take the throne.\u00a0 <\/span>David is old, and Adonijah decides that his\nfather will do nothing if he assumes the throne.\u00a0 <\/span>Bathsheba has had the promise of David, ever\nsince the birth of Solomon, that Solomon would become king in his place and she\ngoes and tells David what is happening.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I Kings 1:32-40<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>And king David\nsaid, Call me Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of\nJehoiada. And they came before the king. The king also said unto them, Take\nwith you the servants of your lord, and cause Solomon my son to ride upon mine\nown mule, and bring him down to Gihon: And let Zadok the priest and Nathan the\nprophet anoint him there king over Israel: and blow ye with the trumpet, and say,\nGod save king Solomon. Then ye shall come up after him, that he may come and\nsit upon my throne; for he shall be king in my stead: and I have appointed him\nto be ruler over Israel and over Judah.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada answered the king, and said,\nAmen: the LORD God of my lord the king say so too<\/i>. As the LORD hath been\nwith my lord the king, even so be he with Solomon, and make his throne greater\nthan the throne of my lord king David. So Zadok the priest, and Nathan the\nprophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada<\/span>, and the Cherethites<\/span>, and the Pelethites<\/span>,\nwent down, and caused Solomon to ride upon king David\u2019s mule, and brought him\nto Gihon. And Zadok the priest took an horn of oil out of the tabernacle, and\nanointed Solomon. And they blew the trumpet; and all the people said, God save\nking Solomon. And all the people came up after him, and the people piped with\npipes, and rejoiced with great joy, so that the earth rent with the sound of\nthem.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Now\nyou will see that the sure mercies of David pass on to his son, Solomon.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I Kings 1:45-53<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>And Zadok the\npriest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king in Gihon: and they are\ncome up from thence rejoicing, so that the city rang again. This is<\/i> the\nnoise that ye have heard. And also Solomon sitteth on the throne of the\nkingdom. And moreover the king\u2019s servants came to bless our lord king David,\nsaying, God make the name of Solomon better than thy name, and make his throne\ngreater than thy throne. And the king bowed himself upon the bed.\u00a0 <\/span>And also thus said the king, Blessed be<\/i>\nthe LORD God of Israel, which hath given one<\/i> to sit on my throne this\nday, mine eyes even seeing it<\/i>. \u00a0<\/span><\/sup>And all the guests that were<\/i> with\nAdonijah were afraid, and rose up, and went every man his way.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And Adonijah feared because of Solomon, and arose, and went, and\ncaught hold on the horns of the altar.\u00a0\n<\/span>And it was told Solomon, saying, Behold, Adonijah feareth king Solomon:\nfor, lo, he hath caught hold on the horns of the altar, saying, Let king\nSolomon swear unto me to day that he will not slay his servant with the\nsword.\u00a0 <\/span>And Solomon said, If he will show\nhimself a worthy man, there shall not an hair of him fall to the earth: but if\nwickedness shall be found in him, he shall die.\u00a0\n<\/span>So king Solomon sent, and they brought him down from the altar. And he\ncame and bowed himself to king Solomon: and Solomon said unto him, Go to thine\nhouse.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We\nhave skipped over so much more that could have been shared, but my objective\nhas been to show you why David could write, <\/span>Surely goodness and\nmercy shall follow me all the days of my life<\/span>.\u00a0\n<\/span>It did!\u00a0 <\/span>And it extended past his\nlife into that of his son, Solomon.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

This\nis what God has been doing in our lives, from the moment we declared that <\/span>The\nLord is my Shepherd<\/span>!\u00a0 <\/span>Our obedience to Him throughout the years,\nour walk with Him in the Paths of Righteousness, our experiences in the Valley\nof the Shadow of Death \u2014 all have seen events unfold in our lives where the\nmercy of the Lord absolutely had to be developed in us so that God\u2019s mercy\nwould become our mercy, and follow us non-stop!In order to understand the significance of David\u2019s statement that\nmercy would follow all the days of his life, let\u2019s look beyond David\u2019s life for\na minute before we actually consider some of the events that transpired for\nDavid.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Take a look at something that Paul was preaching\nwhen he and Barnabas went to the city of Pisidia.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

It has always been a source of astonishment to me when I look at what God had developed in David’s life.
