Spiritual Hierarchy & Authority, Part 3<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

This week -- and next -- I would\nlike to examine the numerous pictures and examples that exist in the picture of\nBalaam and Balak.\u00a0 <\/span>The demonstrations of\ndemonic strategies are many.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

Let\u2019s\ntake a look now at some of these demonic princes and consider their operation\nand activity.\u00a0 <\/span>We\u2019ll begin with Balak,\nthe King of Moab, since he is among the first of the kings recorded in\nScripture in whom an <\/span>arch\u00e9<\/span><\/i><\/b> <\/span>is very clearly demonstrated.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We\nwill be going through Numbers 22, 23 and 24 today in order to capture the full\nessence of this demonic prince.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Numbers 22<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>And\nthe children of Israel set forward, and pitched in the plains of Moab on this\nside Jordan by<\/i> Jericho. And Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel\nhad done to the Amorites. And Moab was sore afraid of the people, because they were<\/i>\nmany: and Moab was distressed because of the children of Israel. And Moab said\nunto the elders of Midian, Now shall this company lick up all that are<\/i>\nround about us, as the ox licketh up the grass of the field. And Balak the son\nof Zippor was<\/i> king of the Moabites at that time.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Notice\nMoab\u2019s very first reaction to Israel.\u00a0\n<\/span>That reaction is fear, and specifically, the Fear of Man.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

He sent messengers therefore unto Balaam the son of Beor to\nPethor, which is<\/i> by the river of the land of the children of his people,\nto call him, saying, Behold, there is a people come out from Egypt: behold,\nthey cover the face of the earth, and they abide over against me: Come now\ntherefore, I pray thee, curse me this people; for they are<\/i> too mighty\nfor me: peradventure I shall prevail, that<\/i> we may smite them, and that<\/i>\nI may drive them out of the land: for I wot<\/span> that he\nwhom thou blessest is<\/i> blessed, and he whom thou cursest is cursed.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Not\nonly is Moab \u2013 the nation \u2013 suffering from the Fear of Man, but their king \u2013\nBalak \u2013 likewise suffers from the same fear.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

What\ndoes this spirit of fear seek to do?\u00a0\n<\/span>Bring curses upon the people of God \u2013 those whom they fear.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with\nthe rewards of divination in their hand; and they came unto Balaam, and spake\nunto him the words of Balak.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nnext thing that appears is witchcraft and divination.\u00a0 <\/span>With that witchcraft and divination come\nbribery.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And he said unto them, Lodge here this night, and I will bring\nyou word again, as the LORD shall speak unto me: and the princes of Moab abode\nwith Balaam.\u00a0 <\/span>And God came unto Balaam,\nand said, What men are<\/i> these with thee?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Notice\nalso Balaam\u2019s reaction.\u00a0 <\/span>He too suffers\nfrom the Fear of Man.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And Balaam said unto God, Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab,\nhath sent unto me, saying<\/i>, \u00a0<\/span><\/sup>Behold,\nthere is<\/i> a people come out of Egypt, which covereth the face of the earth:\ncome now, curse me them; peradventure I shall be able to overcome them, and\ndrive them out.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

But\nGod isn\u2019t putting up with this.\u00a0 <\/span>Remember\nwhat He said through Isaiah the prophet?<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/u><\/b><\/p>\n\n

Isaiah 54:17<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>No\nweapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that<\/i>\nshall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is<\/i> the\nheritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is<\/i> of me,\nsaith the LORD.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/u><\/b><\/p>\n\n

Numbers 22 (continued)<\/span><\/u><\/b>: \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/u>And God said unto\nBalaam, Thou shalt not go with them; thou shalt not curse the people: for they are<\/i>\nblessed. And Balaam rose up in the morning, and said unto the princes of Balak,\nGet you into your land: for the LORD refuseth to give me leave to go with you.\nAnd the princes of Moab rose up, and they went unto Balak, and said, Balaam\nrefuseth to come with us.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And Balak sent yet again princes, more, and more honourable than\nthey. And they came to Balaam, and said to him, Thus saith Balak the son of\nZippor, Let nothing, I pray thee, hinder thee from coming unto me: For I will\npromote thee unto very great honour, and I will do whatsoever thou sayest<\/span> unto me: come therefore, I pray thee, curse me this\npeople.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

If\nanything at all is evident in this, it is that when a person is ruled by fear\nthey will go to great lengths to get rid of those whom they fear.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And Balaam answered and said unto the servants of Balak, If\nBalak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the\nword of the LORD my God, to do less or more. Now therefore, I pray you, tarry\nye also here this night, that I may know what the LORD will say unto me more.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Can\nyou believe Balaam\u2019s responses or his actions?\u00a0\n<\/span>Huhh?\u00a0 <\/span>He gives the right (make\nthat \u201creligiously correct\u201d) answer, and then turns around and says, \u201cWait a\nminute.\u00a0 <\/span>Let\u2019s see if God might say\nsomething different to me.\u00a0 <\/span>Perhaps He\nmight change His mind on this matter and actually let me go with you!\u201d<\/i><\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Good\nGrief!\u00a0 <\/span>How stupid can you get?\u00a0 <\/span>See what the Fear of Man does to a person!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And God came unto Balaam at night, and said unto him, If the men\ncome to call thee, rise up, and<\/i> go with them; but yet the word which I\nshall say unto thee, that shalt thou do. And Balaam rose up in the morning, and\nsaddled his ass, and went with the princes of Moab.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

So\u2026.despite\nthe fact that God had already said NO to Balaam \u2013 Balaam already knows the will\nof God concerning this situation \u2013 he goes nevertheless with Balak\u2019s\nrepresentatives.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

See\nhow this fear drives a person?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And God\u2019s anger was kindled because he went: and the angel of\nthe LORD stood in the way for an adversary against him. Now he was riding upon\nhis ass, and his two servants were<\/i> with him. And the ass saw the angel\nof the LORD standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and the ass\nturned aside out of the way, and went into the field: and Balaam smote the ass,\nto turn her into the way. But the angel of the LORD stood in a path of the\nvineyards, a wall being<\/i> on this side, and a wall on that side. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And when the ass saw the angel of the LORD, she thrust herself\nunto the wall, and crushed Balaam\u2019s foot against the wall: and he smote her\nagain. And the angel of the LORD went further, and stood in a narrow place,\nwhere was<\/i> no way to turn either to the right hand or to the left. And\nwhen the ass saw the angel of the LORD, she fell down under Balaam: and\nBalaam\u2019s anger was kindled, and he smote the ass with a staff.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Yup!\u00a0 <\/span>When the Fear of Man can\u2019t have its way, it\nresorts to violence!<\/o:p><\/span><\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And the LORD opened the mouth of the ass, and she said unto\nBalaam, What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three\ntimes? \u00a0<\/span><\/sup>And Balaam said unto\nthe ass, Because thou hast mocked me: I would there were a sword in mine hand,\nfor now would I kill thee. And the ass said unto Balaam, Am<\/i> not I thine\nass, upon which thou hast ridden ever since I was<\/i> thine unto this day?\nwas I ever wont to do so unto thee? And he said, Nay. Then the LORD opened the\neyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, and his\nsword drawn in his hand: and he bowed down his head, and fell flat on his face.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Finally!\u00a0 <\/span>Balaam falls flat on his face before the\nAngel of the Lord.\u00a0 <\/span>He should have done\nthat a long time ago!\u00a0 <\/span>Think maybe he\nmight listen to the Lord now?<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And the angel of the LORD said unto him, Wherefore hast thou\nsmitten thine ass these three times? behold, I went out to withstand thee,\nbecause thy<\/i> way is perverse before me: And the ass saw me, and turned\nfrom me these three times: unless she had turned from me,<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

surely now also I had slain thee, and saved her alive.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And Balaam said unto the angel of the LORD, I have sinned; for I\nknew not that thou stoodest in the way against me: now therefore, if it\ndisplease thee, I will get me back again.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Nope.\u00a0 <\/span>Balaam hasn\u2019t heard anything.\u00a0 <\/span>The Fear of Man has deafened him\ncompletely.\u00a0 <\/span>He hasn\u2019t come to the\nrealization that his every step in Balak\u2019s direction is displeasing to the\nLord.\u00a0 <\/span>So God is going to turn this event\nagainst both Israel\u2019s enemies and against a rebellious prophet who is so\nblinded by the Fear of Man that he can\u2019t perceive the heart of God.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And the angel of the LORD said unto Balaam, Go with the men: but\nonly the word that I shall speak unto thee, that thou shalt speak. So Balaam\nwent with the princes of Balak.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And when Balak heard that Balaam was come, he went out to meet\nhim unto a city of Moab, which is<\/i> in the border of Arnon, which is<\/i>\nin the utmost coast. And Balak said unto Balaam, Did I not earnestly send unto\nthee to call thee? Wherefore camest thou not unto me? Am I not able indeed to\npromote thee to honour? <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And Balaam said unto Balak, Lo, I am come unto thee: have I now\nany power at all to say anything? the word that God putteth in my mouth, that\nshall I speak.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

No\nkidding!<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/span>And Balaam went with\nBalak, and they came unto Kirjathhuzoth. And Balak offered oxen and sheep, and\nsent to Balaam, and to the princes that were<\/i> with him. And it came to\npass on the morrow, that Balak took Balaam, and brought him up into the high\nplaces of Baal<\/u>, that thence he might see the utmost part<\/i> of the\npeople.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Notice\nwhere Balak took Balaam in order to pronounce his curses upon Israel: \u201cthe high\nplaces of Baal\u201d \u2013 in other words, the places of worship to Baal, the places\nfrom which the spirit of Baal would look down upon the people.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/u><\/b><\/p>\n\n

Numbers 23<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>And\nBalaam said unto Balak, Build me here seven altars, and prepare me here seven\noxen and seven rams. And Balak did as Balaam had spoken; and Balak and Balaam\noffered on every<\/i> altar a bullock and a ram. And Balaam said unto Balak,\nStand by thy burnt offering, and I will go: peradventure the LORD will come to\nmeet me: and whatsoever he showeth me I will tell thee. And he went to an high\nplace.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And God met Balaam: and he said unto him, I have prepared seven\naltars, and I have offered upon every<\/i> altar a bullock and a ram. \u00a0<\/span><\/sup>And the LORD put a word in Balaam\u2019s\nmouth, and said, Return unto Balak, and thus thou shalt speak. \u00a0<\/span><\/sup>And he returned unto him, and, lo, he\nstood by his burnt sacrifice, he, and all the princes of Moab.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

One\nof the things that make this picture interesting is the repeated use of the\nnumber seven.\u00a0 <\/span>That is not a number\nassociated at all with Baal.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

If\nwe\u2019re going to hear from God, we\u2019re going to hear from Him within His framework\n\u2013 NOT the enemy\u2019s!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And he took up his parable, and said, Balak the king of Moab\nhath brought me from Aram<\/u>, out of the mountains of the east, saying<\/i>,\nCome, curse me Jacob, and come, defy Israel. \u00a0<\/span><\/sup>How shall I curse, whom God hath not\ncursed? or how shall I defy, whom<\/i> the LORD hath not defied? \u00a0<\/span><\/sup>For from the top of the rocks I see him,\nand from the hills I behold him: lo, the people shall dwell alone, and shall\nnot be reckoned among the nations. Who can count the dust of Jacob, and the\nnumber of the fourth part<\/i> of Israel? Let me die the death of the\nrighteous, and let my last end be like his!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Are\nyou beginning to get the picture here?\u00a0\n<\/span>Balaam was not of the house of Israel.\u00a0\n<\/span>He was of Aramean lineage \u2013 the progenitors of the Jordanian, Syrian and\nLebanese people.\u00a0 <\/span>The Arameans had spread\nabroad throughout the Mesopotamian region.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Balaam\nwas a \u201cPator\u201d of the \u201cPethor\u201d temple of Mesopotamia.\u00a0 <\/span>Historians tell us that the Pethor was a\nsacred high place where there was an \u201coracle temple\u201d \u2013 meaning that this was a\nplace of interpretation.\u00a0 <\/span>Hence Balaam\nwas the chief among a college of priests.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Balaam\u2019s\nname in the Semitic language (the language of the Arameans) meant: Conqueror of\nthe People.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

As\na Mesopotamian priest of the Babylonian religion \u2013 the religion of Baal worship\n\u2013 he had access to spiritual power and he used that power to control and\nmanipulate people.\u00a0 <\/span>It just wasn\u2019t the\npower of God.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Balak\u2019s\nchoice of Balaam to curse Israel was, therefore, entirely logical.\u00a0 <\/span>You have fear, witchcraft and divination\nworking hand in hand.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nfact that God spoke to Balaam, and the fact that the Angel of the Lord appeared\nto Balaam no doubt frightened him in no small degree!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Balaam\nwasn\u2019t going to speak anything but what God spoke.\u00a0 <\/span>The presence of the Angel of the Lord made it\nclear to Balaam that he wasn\u2019t in charge this time: God was!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And Balak said unto Balaam, What hast thou done unto me? I took\nthee to curse mine enemies, and, behold, thou hast blessed them<\/i>\naltogether. 12<\/sup>And he answered and said, Must I not take heed to\nspeak that which the LORD hath put in my mouth?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And Balak said unto him, Come, I pray thee, with me unto another\nplace, from whence thou mayest see them: thou shalt see but the utmost part of\nthem, and shalt not see them all: and curse me them from thence. And he brought\nhim into the field of Zophim, to the top of Pisgah, and built seven altars, and\noffered a bullock and a ram on every<\/i> altar. And he said unto Balak,\nStand here by thy burnt offering, while I meet the LORD<\/i> yonder.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Zophim\n(\u201cfield of watchers\u201d) was a high place on Mount Pisgah, a neighboring mountain\npeak to Mount Nebo where God took Moses to show him the Land of Promise.\u00a0 <\/span>From Pisgah the whole of the Jordan Valley is\nvisible.\u00a0 <\/span>The hills of Ephraim are\nvisible to the northeast and Mount Hermon fades in the heat toward the\nMediterranean.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

There's\na lot more of this picture to share, so let's pause for today and pick it up\nhere next week.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n
