\n\tJanuary 19, 2018<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\t

 <\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\tThroughout the years, it has been my honor and great delight to have \n\tparticipated in some really spectacular healing miracles.  Have to say \n\tit has been an adventure and a lot of fun to see Holy Spirit tear down walls \n\tof doubt, unbelief and fear.  Last week I left you in the midst of an \n\tunfolding event in which we saw doubt, unbelief and fear literally \n\tdemolished in a dazzling display of healing and restoration.  Let me \n\tbacktrack a bit to provide some continuity for today.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\t <\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\tI set a chair out in front of the group and asked the lady in question to \n\tsit in it and take her shoes off.  With some assistance, she complied, \n\tand when she was ready, I pointed to two of the men in the group I knew to \n\tbe leaders in this particular fellowship and asked them to come forward.<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\t\u201cIf I pray for this sister and speak the word of faith over her, it won\u2019t be \n\tnearly as effective as if you do.  You need to see the Lord working on \n\tyour behalf!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\tYou can imagine the looks on their faces!  \u201cOh, no, we\u2019ve never done \n\tanything like this before!  We don\u2019t know how.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\tI laughed and said, \u201cThat doesn\u2019t matter.  There\u2019s always a first time \n\tfor everyone.  Just pray a simple prayer and ask the Lord to heal her \n\tleg.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\tThe unbelief that displayed in their faces turned to fear.  It was \n\tobvious they were afraid it wasn\u2019t going to work and they would be \n\tembarrassed in front of the whole group.  Despite the obvious unbelief \n\tpresent, Holy Spirit obviously intended to perform something absolutely \n\tspectacular in their midst.  The spirit of unbelief that had ruled in \n\tthis fellowship was about to be kicked out!\n\t<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\tPointing to the two elders, I said, \u201cEach of you pick up one of this \n\tsister\u2019s feet and hold it out straight.\u201d  They did so and I pointed to \n\tone of them and said, \u201cOK, now, you pray the prayer of faith.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\tIf it hadn\u2019t been so sad, it would have been funny.  He stammered and \n\tstuttered and finally said, \u201cI don\u2019t know what to say.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\t\u201cYou are talking to God and simply asking Him to accomplish in this sister \n\twhat Jesus paid for on the Cross.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\tI nodded toward the other elder and indicated that he also could pray.  \n\tSame reaction.  It was no time to quit.  We were going to break \n\tthrough this impasse and see the results.  Finally, the first of the \n\ttwo elders prayed a two-line prayer that was filled with more doubt than \n\tfaith.  The essence of the prayer was kind of like, \u201cIt\u2019s OK if you \n\tdon\u2019t want to but if you would, heal this lady.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\tNothing!  The room was quiet as everyone waited to see the miracle.  \n\tFive minutes went by, and the two men lowered the lady\u2019s legs.  I \n\tstopped them and said, \u201cJust wait.  Let the Lord do His work!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\tTurning to the lady, I asked, \u201cHow long were you in surgery?\u201d  She \n\tanswered, \u201cAt least four hours \u2014 maybe more.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\t\u201cGreat!\u201d I said, \u201cAnd we\u2019re going to give up in five minutes?\u201d  The two \n\telders just stared at me and it was pure frustration covering their faces.  \n\tAnother couple minutes went by and nothing had happened.  Again, they \n\tlowered the legs.<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\t\u201cNo, we\u2019re not stopping now!  If Jesus isn\u2019t in a hurry, neither are \n\twe.\u201d  Again the legs went back up.<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\tThis time I simply said, \u201cOK, Lord, show them your love and grace.  Let \n\tthem see what You\u2019ve paid for on their behalf.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\tThere was a gasp from the lady as well as the two elders as the left leg \n\tbegan to grow out.  In 45 seconds or so, we all got to see that leg \n\tgrow the four inches to replace that which the doctors had cut out.  It \n\tbroke the unbelief in that room in a way that nothing else could have.  \n\tEveryone was weeping including the two elders who had so struggled to pray \n\tthe prayer of faith.  (By the way, the lady walked out of that home \n\tthat night in her stocking feet, leaving crutch behind and the shoes given \n\tto her by the hospital.)<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\tAfter the gathering, Edward said, \u201cWe have some coffee and cake prepared.\u201d  \n\tHe pointed to a table and said, \u201cBe my guest.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\tMoments later, he came with another gentleman and said to me, \u201cI\u2019d like to \n\tintroduce you to our pastor, Tom.\u201d  Tom had tears streaming down his \n\tface.  \u201cI\u2019ve always been taught that the day of miracles was past!  \n\tIn twenty-plus years of ministry, I\u2019ve never seen anything like this.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\tEdward spoke up and said, \u201cOur pastor needs prayer, too.  He doesn\u2019t \n\thave the use of his right arm.  He was injured as a child when a hay \n\twagon rolled over his arm.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\tThat\u2019s when you KNOW that God has ordained a dramatic change in someone\u2019s \n\tlife!  I reached over to grab his right hand and said, \u201cPraise God, my \n\tBrother!  The Lord just loves to minister to His servants!\u201d  Then \n\tI simply said, \u201cJesus!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\tThe sound of a gunshot filled the room in that instant as Tom\u2019s arm \n\tstraightened.  There was a shocked look on his face as he began to flex \n\tthe arm, first raising it to chest level, then above his head.  Tears \n\tonce again began streaming down his face as he raised both arms over his \n\thead and cried out, \u201cJesus!  Oh, thank you, Lord!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\tWhen he regained his composure, he shook my hand vigorously and said, \u201cI \n\tthought the day of miracles was dead.  I will never be the same again!\u201d  \n\tAnd he wasn\u2019t.  He went on to become one of the leaders in the \n\tCharismatic Renewal among the Lutherans.  His church was transformed \n\tfrom that day forward as well.  The spirit of unbelief had been driven \n\tout.<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\tThis was an unusual event, to say the least.  Normally, when I \n\tencounter such unbelief, I walk away from the situation just as Jesus did.  \n\tIt was one of the very few times in my life that Holy Spirit has commanded \n\tme to hold steady.  The authority of the Lord demonstrated in the face \n\tof that unbelief not only produced a spectacular miracle of healing for that \n\tlady, it broke the long-standing traditions of religion in that group, it \n\ttransformed the pastor, and that fellowship, and it produced a leader in the \n\tbody of Christ who influenced thousands of other Lutheran believers from \n\tthat day forth.<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\tThe importance of walking with an ear to what Holy Spirit is saying is \n\tcritical to walking in authority.  As the Centurion said, <\/span>\n\t\u201cI also am a man under authority\u2026.\u201d<\/span>  \n\tAny authority we walk in and operate with MUST BE that which we have heard \n\tFather say and\/or do.<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\tLet\u2019s shift gears a bit to consider something that Jesus said.<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\tMatthew 16:13-19<\/span><\/u>:\n\t<\/span>\n\t\n\t <\/span><\/b>When \n\tJesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, \n\tsaying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? And they said, Some say \n\tthat thou art<\/i> John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or \n\tone of the prophets.<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\tHe saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Simon Peter \n\tanswered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus \n\tanswered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and \n\tblood hath not revealed it<\/i> unto thee, but my Father which is in \n\theaven. And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I \n\twill build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\tAnd I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven<\/span><\/u>: \n\tand whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and \n\twhatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\tWhenever we read this phrase we think of \u201ckeys\u201d in a generic sense: \n\tsomething -- usually a metal piece -- that locks or unlocks a door.<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\tIn a metaphoric sense you can picture what Jesus is saying within that \n\tcontext, but what Jesus is saying actually has much greater significance.  \n\tLet\u2019s see if we can re-phrase this more accurately according to the actual \n\tGreek:<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\u201cAnd I will give you the authority and power to lock and unlock \n\tHeaven so that whatever you bind, restrict or stop on earth shall be, And \n\twhatever you break up, loose, dissolve or put off on earth shall be, having \n\talready been broken up, loosed, dissolved or put off in Heaven.\u201d \n\t<\/span>\n\t(Matthew 16:13-19, RAC \n\tTranslation & Amplification)<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\tChanges the picture a whole lot, doesn\u2019t it?  So why did Jesus put it \n\tlike that to Peter?<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\tLet\u2019s first put this in the context of the events that had just taken place \n\tand then get back to what started this exchange between Jesus and Peter in \n\tthe first place.<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\tMatthew, by the way, is the only one among the four writers of the Gospels \n\twho notes this exchange.<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\tIt comes after the feeding of the five thousand.  A miracle of unusual \n\tproportions has just occurred.  Jesus has multiplied bread and fish out \n\tof five loaves of bread and two small fish to feed a crowd of somewhere on \n\tthe order of 30,000 people to the place where everyone is full and \n\tsatisfied.<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\tTo get away from the crowds, Jesus has crossed over the Sea of Galilee with \n\tHis disciples.  Whatever time it took to cross the Sea of Galilee \n\tobviously was more than an hour or two and the disciples had gotten hungry.<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\tA conversation ensues between the disciples when Jesus makes the statement \n\tto them, \u201cBeware of the leaven of the Pharisees.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\tThey mistake His comment to them to be a reference to bread and say among \n\tthemselves, \u201cHe\u2019s saying this to us because we forgot to bring any bread \n\twith us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\tHmmmmmm\u2026.. makes you wonder where their thoughts were!<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\tNow they\u2019ve come into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi and Jesus has a \n\tquestion.<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\u201cWhom do men say that I as the Son of Man AM?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\tThe question is designed to bring the disciples to a confession that will \n\tforever alter their lives.<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\t\u201cSome people say you are John the Baptist, some think you are Elijah and \n\tsome think you are Jeremiah or one of the prophets.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\tSo Jesus puts it to them directly.<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\u201cBut whom do YOU say that I AM?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\tSimon Peter wastes no time in responding.<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\t\u201cYou are the Messiah, the Christ, the Anointed One, the Son of the Living \n\tGod!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\t

 <\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\tThere!  He\u2019d said it.  The confession had taken place and Jesus \n\tmade it precisely clear where this statement had come from.<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\u201cBlessed are you, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood has not \n\trevealed it unto you [this didn\u2019t come out of carnal, human thinking]; this \n\trevelation came directly to you from My Father which is in Heaven.<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\u201cI declare to you that from this day your onoma has been changed.  \n\tNo longer are you Simon [the one who hears] who is the son of Jona; you are \n\tPetros \u2013 a piece of the Rock (Petra) \u2013 and it is upon that rock (of which \n\tyou are a part) that I will build my Ekklesia \u2013 my called out and chosen and \n\tprepared body of people;<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\u201cAnd the gates of Hell [all the powers and governance of Hell] \n\twill not ever overpower or prevail in battle against it [my Ekklesia].<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\u201cAnd I will give you the authority and power to lock and unlock \n\tHeaven so what whatever you bind, restrict or stop on earth shall be, having \n\tbeen already bound, restricted or stopped in Heaven.<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\u201cAnd whatever you break up, loose, dissolve or put off on earth \n\tshall be, having already been broken up, loosed, dissolved or put off in \n\tHeaven<\/span>.\u201d\n\t<\/span>\n\t\n\t(RAC Translation & Amplification)<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\tAre you beginning to understand \u201cthe keys of the Kingdom?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\tThere is a revelation of functional authority in what Jesus is saying here, \n\tand we will take a look at that picture next week.<\/span><\/p>\n\t

\n\t\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n\t
