Spiritual Hierarchy & Authority, Part 24<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

Last week we talked about the seven\nnations and Israel\u2019s failure to overcome them.\u00a0\n<\/span>Each of those nations represented different ruling spirits<\/span><\/b> <\/span>\u2014 <\/span>kosmokrator<\/span><\/i><\/b>, if you will \u2014 whose total existence was purposed to\ndefeat the plan of God in the Earth. Just because Israel failed in the natural\nto overcome doesn\u2019t mean that somehow throughout the ages, those wicked spirits\nhave gone away.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In\nRevelation 2 and 3, John writes seven letters to seven different Ekklesias in\nAsia Minor with a description of how each of them had succumbed to one or more\nof these same spirits, and gave them both a mandate and a promise to those who\nwould overcome.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Obviously,\nI\u2019m not going to cover ground in exhaustive detail here in the way that I have\nin the past, but I have sent a lengthy manuscript for a book to be published\ntitled, Seven Nations, Seven Letters<\/i><\/b>, to my publisher, and am\nhopeful that we can see it available in the next couple of months.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Let\u2019s\nbegin today by identifying the characteristics of each of the seven Ekklesias\nas John saw them, and the relationship between the Ekklesia and the spirit(s)\nthey needed to overcome.\u00a0 <\/span>Taking them in\norder as the letters were written, they are as follows:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(1)<\/span> Ephesus:\n<\/span><\/b>The\nFear of Evil\u00a0 <\/span>(The Hittites)<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(2)<\/span> Smyrna<\/span><\/b>: The Fear of\nDeath\u00a0 <\/span>(The Girgashites)<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(3)<\/span> Pergamos<\/span><\/b>: The Fear of\nMan\u00a0 <\/span>(The Hivites)<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(4)<\/span> Thyatira: <\/span><\/b>Religion,\nHierarchy, Jezebel (The Amorites)<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(5)<\/span> Sardis: <\/span><\/b>Arrogance,\nLegalism, Threshing\u00a0 <\/span>(The Jebusites)<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(6)<\/span> Philadelphia: <\/span><\/b>Democracy\u00a0 <\/span>(The Perizzites)<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(7)<\/span> Laodicea: <\/span><\/b>Merchandising (The\nCanaanites)<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Some\nof the areas of struggle among these seven Ekklesias are fairly obvious at\nfirst glance.\u00a0 <\/span>Others are not so\napparent.\u00a0 <\/span>It is not possible for me to\ndeal with these comparisons in any depth in this letter, so let me simply deal\nwith the promises to the overcomers.\u00a0 <\/span>The\npromises, by themselves, are very clear indications of the struggles within the\nEkklesias; and the progression to the Throne should be quite obvious to all.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nfirst letter to the Ekklesia in Ephesus picks up where things fell apart in the\nGarden.\u00a0 <\/span>When Adam and Eve ate of the\nfruit of the Tree of Knowledge, they were immediately infected with the Fear of\nEvil.\u00a0 <\/span>Their reaction to that fear impelled\nthem to run and hide.\u00a0 <\/span>They were\nimmediately cut off from the Tree of Life -- and the relationship of love and\nunity with the Lord.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Ephesus\nhad departed from its first love.\u00a0 <\/span>It had\nfallen -- as Adam and Eve did -- and begun to partake once again of the Tree of\nKnowledge.\u00a0 <\/span>The Fear of Evil keeps people\nfrom forsaking the Tree of Knowledge, and it cheats people out of a true\nlove-relationship with the Lord.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\npromise, therefore, to those who overcome the Fear of Evil, and the Tree of\nKnowledge is,<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Revelation 2:7 NASB<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>"To him who\novercomes, I will grant to eat of the Tree of Life, which is in the Paradise of\nGod."<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nimplication is clear.\u00a0 <\/span>Those who overcome\nthe temptation to eat of the Tree of Knowledge, those who overcome the Fear of\nEvil will have an open door back into the Garden where the Tree of Life stands\nready to provide Truth instead of knowledge, Life instead of intellect, Love\ninstead of fear.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Letter\nnumber two to Smyrna clearly identifies their struggle with the Fear of\nDeath.\u00a0 <\/span>The Fear of Death makes <\/span>thlipsis<\/span><\/i><\/b> (tribulation,\npressure, fire, heat) something to avoid at all costs.\u00a0 <\/span>This fear cheats the Bride out of having\nworked within her being those things necessary to withstand all that the Enemy\ncan throw at her.\u00a0 <\/span>The Fear of Death interferes\nwith the processes of the Holy Spirit, who is the Paraklete, and seeks to keep\nthe Bride from ever becoming that authoritative co-regent with Jesus Christ.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\npromise of the Lord, therefore, to the overcomer -- to the one who overcomes\nthe Fear of Death -- is,<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Revelation 2:11<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>"He who\novercomes shall not be hurt by the second death."<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nsecond death is the final separation from the Bridegroom, for which there is no\nremedy.\u00a0 <\/span>For the one delivered from the\nsecond death, the future events are seen as a blessing!\u00a0 <\/span>Not something to fear or hide from.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nthird letter to Pergamos deals with the Fear of Man.\u00a0 <\/span>Those who suffer from the Fear of Man\nstruggle with the acceptance of their peers.\u00a0\n<\/span>Within the Body of Christ, a large majority of "believers" blindly\nsuccumb to the doctrine of Balaam, not realizing what is happening.\u00a0 <\/span>The doctrine of Balaam is epitomized in\nNumbers 22, 23, and 24.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

No\npicture could more graphically portray the workings of the Fear of Man, how\nthat fear leads one to accept the teachings of men at face value and reject the\nrevelation that comes to each individual by and through the Holy Spirit.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\npicture of Balaam is a picture of stubbornness, obtuseness, and the\noverwhelming need for acceptance by those in seats of power.\u00a0 <\/span>Also identified in Pergamos are those who\nwere holding to the teaching of the Nicolaitans.\u00a0 <\/span>The doctrine of the Nicolaitans (which we\nhave identified in previous Open Letters) is the obvious counterpart to the\ndoctrine of Balaam.\u00a0 <\/span>That doctrine was\n"Power to Man," whether it was seen in the Spirit of the\nPharisees\/Perizzites\/Democracy, or the Spirit of the Sadducees\/Amorites\/Hierarchy.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Whether\none sought after democratic government or hierarchical government, the end\nresult was still the same: "Power to Man."\u00a0 <\/span>Those who suffer from The Fear of Man want to\nbe in power over man.\u00a0 <\/span>This third step in\nthe overcoming process is extremely critical.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\npromise to those who overcome the Fear of Man is this:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Revelation 2:17 NASB<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>"To\nhim who overcomes, to him will I give of the hidden manna, and I will give him\na white stone, and a new name written on the stone which no one knows but he\nwho receives it."<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nessence of this promise, without getting into the Hebrew metaphors, is\nthreefold: <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(1)<\/span><\/b> <\/span>the receiving of\nrevelation through the Spirit of God;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(2)<\/span><\/b> <\/span>an invitation to\nthe Marriage of the Lamb; and <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(3)<\/span><\/b> <\/span>the promise of a\nnew <\/span>onoma<\/span><\/i><\/b>\nfor the overcomer.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

To\nthe Ekklesia in Thyatira, John made it clear that they had a battle on their\nhands with the Spirit of the Amorites, which had crept into their midst through\n"converted Sadducees."\u00a0 <\/span>The\nSpirit of Jezebel functioned freely in their midst, seeking preeminence for\nitself, usurping the true authority which comes in the place of union with\nJesus Christ, and substituting the Spirit of Divination for the Spirit of\nProphecy.\u00a0 <\/span>It led men and women to false\nallegiances and alliances with spirits whose entire being existed for the theft\nof true authority and true love-relationships.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\npromise to those who overcome the Spirit of the Amorites, therefore, is true\nauthority.\u00a0 <\/span>Listen to the promise:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Revelation 2:26-29, NASB<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>"He\nwho overcomes, and he who keeps my deeds until the end, to him I will give\nauthority over the nations; and he shall rule them with a rod of iron, as the\nvessels of the potter are broken to pieces, as I also have received authority\nfrom My Father; and I will give him the morning star."<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\npromise of "the morning star" is a Hebrew metaphor for\n"preeminence."\u00a0 <\/span>The difference,\nhowever, is that this is the preeminence which comes from the Lord, not that\nwhich is freely and cheaply handed out by men and women under the influence and\ncontrol of the Spirit of the Amorites.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Sardis\nwas clearly struggling with legalism.\u00a0\n<\/span>This Ekklesia was infected with the Spirit of the Jebusites.\u00a0 <\/span>That spirit seeks to "thresh" the\nWord of the Lord until it is unrecognizable.\u00a0\n<\/span>It doles it out in spoonfuls, seeking to keep control of those under its\npower.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

It\nis an arrogant spirit which lays claim to the <\/span>onoma<\/span><\/i><\/b> <\/span><\/i>of the Lord, all\nthe while denying the power thereof.\u00a0 <\/span>It\nhas a "name" that it is alive, when in truth it is dead!\u00a0 <\/span>No picture could more clearly identify\n"threshing."<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Threshing\nis the practice of picking scriptures apart to promote certain doctrines, and\ndemanding that everyone submit to the "requirements" of those\ndoctrines upon penalty of excommunication or being disfellowshipped.\u00a0 <\/span>By the time the threshing is done, all of the\nusable life has been removed, and it is good for nothing but that which is\nintended by those who so arrogantly pass it out.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Legalism\namong God's people sullies their robes of righteousness.\u00a0 <\/span>One cannot be legalistic and righteous at the\nsame time.\u00a0 <\/span>The two simply don't\nmix.\u00a0 <\/span>Either one receives and lives the\ngrace and love of the Lord Jesus Christ, or they return to the Law (be that the\nMosaic Law or so-called New Testament Law).\u00a0\n<\/span>One cannot return to the Law in any form and expect to eat of the Tree\nof Life, or to have their names in the Book of Life.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\npromise to those who overcome the Spirit of the Jebusites is,<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Revelation 3:5<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0\n<\/span><\/span>"He who overcomes shall thus be clothed in white garments;\nand I will not erase his name from the Book of Life, and I will confess his\nname before My Father, and before His angels."<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nprogression in this promise is clear.\u00a0\n<\/span>Where the promise to those who overcome the Fear of Man was the\ninvitation to the wedding, the promise here is <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(1)<\/span><\/b>\nthe receipt of the wedding garment, <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(2)<\/span><\/b>\na guarantee of your name in the Book of Life, and <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(3)<\/span><\/b>\nan introduction by the Bridegroom to The Father.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Are\nyou beginning to see the progression in this process of overcoming?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nsixth letter to Philadelphia, at first glance, does not seem to identify any\nproblem areas or spirits which need to be overcome.\u00a0 <\/span>But wait!\u00a0\n<\/span>That's only at first glance.\u00a0 <\/span>Look\na little deeper.\u00a0 <\/span>There is a very clear\narea of need for overcoming.\u00a0 <\/span>It is\nidentified in the statement,<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Revelation 3:11<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>"Hold\nfast what you have, in order that no one take your crown."<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Why\nsuch a command?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Philadelphia\nhad overcome everything described in the previous letters.\u00a0 <\/span>The letter to this Ekklesia began with an\nunusual appellation,<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Revelation 3:7<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>"He who\nis holy, He who is true, He who has the key of David, who opens and no one\nshuts, and who shuts and no one opens, says this...."<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nsignification of the "Key of David" indicates that they understood\nclearly the promise of the return of "the Tabernacle of David."<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\n"Key of David" was the understanding that David ruled in the midst of\nworship.\u00a0 <\/span>He was an unorthodox king\ncompared to the kings of history, and especially the kings of that era.\u00a0 <\/span>Because worship was David's first priority,\nbecause he demonstrated the heart of the Bridegroom for His Bride openly before\nthe nation with the companies of worshipers (who ministered continuously before\nthe simple tabernacle containing the Ark of the Covenant), the Lord made an\nunprecedented promise to David,<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

II Samuel 7:16<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>"Your\nhouse and your kingdom shall endure before Me forever; your throne shall be\nestablished forever."<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nEkklesia in Philadelphia had learned how to rule in the midst of worship.\u00a0 <\/span>The authority of the Lord was clearly evident\nin their midst.\u00a0 <\/span>This made them a target\nof jealous Christians who accused them of "setting up their own\nkingdom."\u00a0 <\/span>That accusation was\nblatantly false.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In\nan effort to defuse the criticism, they fell into the trap which has ensnared\nbelievers in every generation since: they attempted to "democratize,"\nto "spread their counsel" among many brethren so as to avoid any\nappearance of "being in power."\u00a0\n<\/span>It essentially became an apology for the power and authority of the Lord\nworking in and through them.\u00a0 <\/span>Thus, they\nwere permitting the Spirit of the Perizzites to contaminate their Ekklesia, and\nin the process, take their crown.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\npromise of the Lord, therefore, was to the point,<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Revelation 3:12, NASB<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>"He who\novercomes <\/span>(the\nSpirit of the Perizzites), <\/span>I will make him a pillar in the\ntemple of My God, and he will not go out from it anymore; and I will write upon\nhim the onoma<\/i> of My God, and the onoma<\/i> of the city of My God, the\nnew Jerusalem, which comes down out of Heaven from My God, and My new onoma<\/i>."<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Now\ndo you see the progression?\u00a0 <\/span>We have come\nto the place of dwelling perpetually in His presence.\u00a0 <\/span>The promise of the <\/span>onoma <\/span><\/i><\/b>of "the city\nof My God, the new Jerusalem" is the guarantee that we are now a certified\npart of the Bride of the Lord Jesus Christ.\u00a0\n<\/span>Not only that, the overcomer receives His new <\/span>onoma<\/span><\/i><\/b>.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

This\nis where we have to stop for today.\u00a0 <\/span>Next\nweek we will look at the seventh letter \u2013 a letter I consider to be the most\npassionate and intimate of the seven letters because of the way that Jesus\naddresses them.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n
