Dealing With The Spirit of Poverty, Part 5<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n

We wrapped up last week with the statement that Jesus wasn\u2019t\r\npoor.\u00a0 <\/span>In fact, Jesus had to be among the\r\nwealthiest individuals of that era.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Consider how he began his life.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>At age two, when the magi came to visit him and pay honor and tribute to\r\nthe \u201cKing of Kings,\u201d they brought gold, frankincense and myrrh.\u00a0 <\/span>Contrary to popular belief, the gold wasn\u2019t\r\njust a few coins.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n

These were Magi!\u00a0 <\/span>They came representing the kings of the\r\neast.\u00a0 <\/span>When you stop and think about the\r\nQueen of Sheba coming to visit Solomon with a camel train laden with gold, and\r\nyou realize that the equivalent value of the gold she brought amounted to $119\r\nMillion, do you think for a moment that the Magi\u2019s camel train carried any less\r\nfor the King of Kings?<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Getting back to what\r\nstarted all this last week, let me retrace some of what I said then.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

What\r\nmade what Jesus shared different than how many folks have interpreted his\r\nstatements was the fact that He neither had the time nor the inclination to\r\nwaste what few years He had on living in the lap of luxury, going home and\r\nsleeping in a nice bed, satisfying his creature comforts.\u00a0 <\/span>He could have, you know.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Jesus\r\nwasn\u2019t poor.\u00a0 <\/span>He had enormous wealth at\r\nHis disposal.\u00a0 <\/span>He chose, instead, to take\r\nevery available moment investing Himself in the eternal investment that would\r\nultimately pay the dividends that would bring Him a yield of folks with whom he\r\ncould fellowship as His co-equals.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Jesus\r\nwas sacrificing the ease of His flesh for a spiritual return that would last\r\nfor eternity.\u00a0 <\/span>Thus, as He began his\r\nthree and a half years of ministry, He said, <\/span>\u201cLay not up\r\nfor yourselves treasures upon earth where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where\r\nthieves break through and steal, But lay up for yourselves treasure in heaven,\r\nwhere neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break\r\nthrough and steal.\u00a0 <\/span>For where your\r\ntreasure is, there will your heart be also.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Now\r\nI can hear the arguments coming!\u00a0\r\n<\/span>See!\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus said you\u2019re not\r\nsupposed to try to get rich!\u00a0 <\/span>That\u2019s a\r\npoverty mindset!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Then\r\nfolks argue,<\/span>\r\n<\/span>\u201c\u2026that a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of\r\nheaven.\u00a0 <\/span>And again I say unto you, that\r\nit is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man\r\nto enter into the kingdom of God.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Jesus\r\npreaching against prosperity?\u00a0 <\/span>No He\r\ndidn\u2019t!\u00a0 <\/span>He\u2019s talking about \u201cwhere your\r\ntreasure is.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>He\u2019s not preaching against\r\nprosperity, against wealth: He\u2019s preaching against laying up wealth for\r\nyourself that disintegrates with time.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>It sounds like double talk, so let me explain.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Jesus\r\nspelled out a principle that literally affects every single thing we do in\r\nlife,<\/span> <\/span>\u201cGive,\r\nand it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down and shaken together,\r\nand running over shall men give into your bosom.\u00a0 <\/span>For with the same measure ye mete withal, it\r\nshall be measured to you again.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n

See\r\nwhere the focus is?\u00a0 <\/span>On giving!\u00a0 <\/span>Not on getting!\u00a0 <\/span>That doesn\u2019t equate to not having.\u00a0 <\/span>What some folks forget is that if you don\u2019t\r\nhave, you don\u2019t give.\u00a0 <\/span>It gets wilder\r\nthan that, too.\u00a0 <\/span>If you give what you\r\ndon\u2019t have \u2013 not because you make some arbitrary decision to, but because the\r\nLord asks it of you \u2013 the Lord multiplies it back to you so many times over you\r\ncan\u2019t even begin to count it.\u00a0 <\/span>The\r\npoverty mindset says you need to get \u2014 and keep for yourself.\u00a0 <\/span>Giving flies in the face of the poverty\r\nmindset.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

A\r\nbusinessman Dad used to know was a fellow by the name of R.G. Letourneau.\u00a0 <\/span>This was a guy responsible for the\r\ndevelopment and invention of much of the earth-moving equipment we see in the\r\nconstruction industry.\u00a0 <\/span>I never got to\r\nknow Letourneau \u2014 I was too young when Dad visited with him to remember\r\nanything \u2014 but he practiced a principle that lots of folks have come to\r\nunderstand.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Letourneau\r\nwas a struggling designer, machinist, businessman \u2013 whatever label you want to\r\napply to him \u2013 who began practicing the principle of tithing \u2013 then\r\ngiving.\u00a0 <\/span>Now before you all go screaming\r\nat me, shouting me down and saying that tithing is Old Testament only and not\r\nNew Testament, just hang on for a second.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Remember\r\nwhat the Lord said to Moses about tithing?\u00a0\r\n<\/span>(Most folks don\u2019t seem to realize the importance of this.)\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>\u201cAnd all the tithe\r\n\u2026\u2026.is holy unto the LORD.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>See that word,\r\nall?\u00a0 <\/span>That means every bit of it \u2013 no\r\nmatter what you are tithing on.\u00a0 <\/span>Money,\r\nland, the fruit of your labors, the growth of your herds \u2013 everything!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

So\r\ntell me something, folks!\u00a0 <\/span>If the tithe\r\nwas holy unto the Lord before Jesus came, where, pray tell me, did we get this\r\nscrewed-up idea that Jesus made it less holy\u2026or unholy?\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Nossiree,\r\nBob!\u00a0 <\/span>What Jesus demonstrated \u2013 with the\r\nwidow\u2019s mite \u2013 was that everything we have belongs to the Lord.\u00a0 <\/span>His praise of the widow was that she gave\r\nmore with her mite than those rich Scribes and Pharisees gave out of their\r\nwealth.\u00a0 <\/span>The amount wasn\u2019t\r\nimportant.\u00a0 <\/span>It was the principle.\u00a0 <\/span>She was giving all that she had, knowing that\r\nshe couldn\u2019t out-give the Lord.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Jesus\r\nnever changed the principle of the tithe.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>He just expanded it.\u00a0 <\/span>The tithe\r\nwas still intended to promote and support those whom God calls into the\r\nministry so that they can continue to give themselves to sharing the life that\r\nwe need to grow in our maturing relationship.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Jesus did criticize some tithers, but not for the tithe: for limiting\r\nthemselves to the tithe.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

What\r\nhappens when you become legalistic about tithing and only give ten percent of\r\nyour increase?\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s your attitude about\r\nit.\u00a0 <\/span>You are giving what is absolutely\r\ndemanded by Law.\u00a0 <\/span>You are living\r\naccording to the Law instead of incorporating the Grace and Liberty that comes\r\nin giving liberally and abundantly.\u00a0 <\/span>If\r\nyour giving is legalistic, you reap the curse of the Law.\u00a0 <\/span>If your giving is free and abundant and\r\ncheerful, you soon find out that you can\u2019t out-give the Lord.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

This\r\nwas the lesson R.G. Letourneau learned.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>He was tithing, and doing OK, but not really getting anywhere\r\nfinancially.\u00a0 <\/span>So he set down one day and\r\nsaid to the Lord, \u201cLord, I\u2019ll make a deal with you.\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019ll give you 20% of my increase if you\u2019ll go\r\ninto business with me.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>That\r\nworked!\u00a0 <\/span>Letourneau began to prosper.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

So\r\nhe increased his giving to 30%.\u00a0 <\/span>Then\r\n40%.\u00a0 <\/span>Then 50%.\u00a0 <\/span>Before it was over, he was giving the Lord\r\n90% of his income and living better off the 10% than most folks would live off\r\ntheir 90 or 100%.\u00a0 <\/span>He built his\r\nearth-moving equipment business into one of the world\u2019s largest. \u00a0<\/span>He became one of the world\u2019s richest men\r\nbefore his death.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

See!\u00a0 <\/span>Letourneau never forgot the 10% and where it\r\nbelonged.\u00a0 <\/span>But he added another 10%, and\r\nthen another, and then another, etc.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Letourneau spread his giving so that he supported missions and various\r\nministries; and ultimately, he built what still operates today as a thriving\r\nand prosperous college in North Texas, LeTourneau Bible College.\u00a0 <\/span>The folks that come out that school have\r\nthose fundamentals taught to them.\u00a0 <\/span>They\r\nare taught how to give.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Another\r\nof God\u2019s businessmen was J.C. Penney.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Operating a five and dime store and struggling to make ends meet, Penney\r\ndecided he was going to begin tithing from the proceeds of his dime store.\u00a0 <\/span>He began to prosper as few people have,\r\ngrowing his little store into a nationwide department store chain that nearly\r\nevery single American buys from at some time or another.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\nquestion isn\u2019t tithing?\u00a0 <\/span>The question\r\nisn\u2019t even giving.\u00a0 <\/span>The question is\r\nwhether you have giving incorporated into your spirit.\u00a0 <\/span>Giving becomes your mindset.\u00a0 <\/span>Giving becomes the way you live.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

For\r\nmany years, Della and I have given.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>There have been times when the Lord asked us to give our last red cent \u2013\r\neven with bills unpaid and house payment coming due.\u00a0 <\/span>We have never failed to obey.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Della\r\nand I were talking about an experience we had several years back when I was\r\nteaching broadcast engineering as an adjunct to the University of Alaska.\u00a0 <\/span>I was making pretty good money, but we also\r\nhad some pretty steep living expenses at the time.\u00a0 <\/span>One of my students came to me one day and\r\ntold me about another student in the class that was about to be evicted from\r\nhis apartment.\u00a0 <\/span>That student had missed\r\nseveral days of classes, and I wondered out loud in class where he had been.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Checking\r\ninto the student\u2019s circumstances, we found out that his wife was pregnant, that\r\nshe had complications, and their medical coverage was falling way short to\r\ncover their expenses.\u00a0 <\/span>He couldn\u2019t afford\r\nto keep up with the medical expenses and make his rent payment at the same\r\ntime.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Della\r\nand I felt specifically prompted by the Holy Spirit to pay all of this\r\nstudent\u2019s back rent so that he wouldn\u2019t be evicted, and so that he could\r\ncomplete the engineering course and get a job I knew was waiting for him.\u00a0 <\/span>In order to help that young man, however, it\r\ntook every bit of money we had in our bank account.\u00a0 <\/span>I got a cashier\u2019s check made payable to the\r\nstudent\u2019s landlord in the total amount of his past due and current rent, and it\r\nleft us with something like seventeen cents in the bank.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

More\r\nironic was the fact that our house payment was due in five days.\u00a0 <\/span>We both had peace about it and knew that the\r\nLord would make good on our needs.\u00a0 <\/span>He\r\ndid.\u00a0 <\/span>I received an unexpected legal\r\nsettlement over an all-but-forgotten issue a couple days later that more than\r\ncovered our needs.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

It\r\nwasn\u2019t the first time we gave everything we had, and it certainly wasn\u2019t the\r\nlast time.\u00a0 <\/span>The student?\u00a0 <\/span>Oh, yes.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>He finished the course and almost immediately went to work for a local\r\nnetwork radio station making more money than he\u2019d ever made in his life.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

We\r\nwere doing more than just taking care of a financial need, however.\u00a0 <\/span>We were investing ourselves \u2013 sowing seed, if\r\nyou will \u2013 into that young man and his wife.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>We saw the return on our investment in him in the years that followed as\r\nhe became a recognized radio personality, using his position to influence his\r\nlisteners for good \u2013 and more specifically, for the Gospel of Jesus Christ.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Della\r\nand I don\u2019t just give money.\u00a0 <\/span>We don\u2019t\r\njust tithe.\u00a0 <\/span>Giving is our occupation.\u00a0 <\/span>I used to tell folks that I was a minister of\r\nthe gospel and a broadcaster (among other things).\u00a0 <\/span>Now, when folks ask me what I do for a\r\nliving, I tell them that I\u2019m a giver.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>You ought to see the looks on their faces.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u201cYou\r\ndo what for a living?\u00a0 <\/span>Give?\u00a0 <\/span>What kind of occupation is that?\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

It\r\nmay seem unorthodox, but the principles incorporated into tithing and giving\r\nand sowing all yield prosperity when we do it in obedience to God\u2019s word.\u00a0 <\/span>We don\u2019t just give.\u00a0 <\/span>We sow.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>It literally flies in the face of the Spirit of Poverty.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Remember\r\nthe sharing I did some weeks back on sowing?\u00a0\r\n<\/span>This is what I was talking about.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Everything we do has a \u201cseed sowing and harvest\u201d component to it.\u00a0 <\/span>We give because it is the heart of the\r\nLord.\u00a0 <\/span>We give because we can sow into\r\npeople\u2019s lives and expect a harvest.\u00a0 <\/span>We\r\ngive because it is the way to receive.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>We give because it is the principal road to prosperity.\u00a0 <\/span>God has prospered us in ways that transcend\r\ndescription.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

As\r\nyou have seen from my Sunday sharing, as well as the weekly Coffee Break\r\narticles, Della and I have enjoyed the presence of the Lord and adventures in\r\nand with Him in a way that no words can possible describe.\u00a0 <\/span>We prosper continuously \u2013 not because we are\r\ntrying to get rich, and not because we are trying to make as much money as we\r\ncan.\u00a0 <\/span>We prosper because we continue to\r\nsow seed.\u00a0 <\/span>We plant, and we harvest.\u00a0 <\/span>We plant some more, and we harvest some more.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

This\r\nsharing is a kind of planting and sowing.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>In the nearly 14 years that I\u2019ve been writing these coffee break\r\narticles, we have received emails and phone calls from people who have accepted\r\nJesus Christ as their personal savior as a direct result of reading them.\u00a0 <\/span>We have heard from others who have\r\nrededicated their lives to the Lord.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Still\r\nothers have called us on the phone to report miraculous healings as a result of\r\nhaving faith sparked in their spirits and responding to the Spirit of the Lord.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Della\r\nand I also sow into other ministries, looking to participate in the harvest\r\nthat comes forth in those ministries.\u00a0 <\/span>We\r\ngive to several missions abroad.\u00a0 <\/span>We\r\nparticipate as partners with Neville Johnson, Paul Keith Davis, and other\r\nprophetic ministries.\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019m not saying all\r\nthis to toot our horns.\u00a0 <\/span>If the Lord\r\ndidn\u2019t provide the seed for us to sow, we\u2019d be just as dead in the water as\r\nanyone else.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

We\u2019ve\r\ncome to understand \u2013 with complete revelation \u2013 just exactly what Paul meant\r\nwhen he wrote, <\/span>\u201cNow He that ministereth seed to the sower both minister bread\r\nfor your food, and multiply your seed sown, and increase the fruits of your\r\nrighteousness\u2026\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Make\r\nsense to you?\u00a0 <\/span>How about it, folks?\u00a0 <\/span>Want to do a little experiment?\u00a0 <\/span>Want to try and out-give God?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Now\r\nyou know why I always start with or end my conversations with folks with the\r\nphrase, \u2018Blessings on you!\u2019\u00a0 <\/span>If I bless\r\nothers, I get blessed.\u00a0 <\/span>If I get blessed,\r\nI have more to bless with.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

It\u2019s\r\nthe Law of Sowing and Reaping.\u00a0 <\/span>More to\r\nthe point, it\u2019s the Law of Prosperity \u2014 the absolute antithesis of the Spirit\r\nof Poverty.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

I\r\nneed to shift gears at this point and talk about the intricacies of the poverty\r\nmindset, so let\u2019s call a time out for this week and pick it up here next week.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n
