Dealing With The Spirit of Poverty, Part 1<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

I\u2019ve been promising to address this subject for some time, and\nthat time has come. In the next two or three weeks (or however long it takes\nme) we will address the<\/span> \nmindset,\nthe attitudes and the spirit that drives poverty mentality. We\u2019ll even have\nsome fun along the way.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/h4>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

I\u2019d be willing to bet you that I\u2019ve\ngrown up with far more teaching on the topic of being \u201chumble\u201d and living the\n\u201chumble life\u201d than I\u2019ve ever heard on living the blessed life, prospering, and\nall that.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The body of Christ has been\npermeated for centuries with a poverty <\/span>mentality. <\/span>For <\/span>some <\/span>reason,\n<\/span>folks <\/span>think <\/span>it <\/span>is <\/span>more <\/span>blessed <\/span>to run around without a home to call your\nown, drive a clunky old car, buy their clothes from the Salvation Army or\nGoodwill, etc., <\/span>etc.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Somehow,\nthis has been translated into \u201crighteousness\u201d and \u201cbeing like Jesus.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Brother,\nwhat a farce! This is a fraud that has been perpetrated on folks for\ngenerations. Now before you go to thinking I\u2019m going to start preaching \u201cthink\nand grow rich,\u201d forget it! That\u2019s not what this is about. It is about a\nmindset, however \u2013 one that permeates a lot of what infects and contaminates\nChristians \u2013 and the world in general.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Poverty <\/span>begins\n<\/span>in <\/span>one\u2019s <\/span>mind <\/span>\u2013 <\/span>in <\/span>their <\/span>thinking, <\/span>their <\/span>attitudes <\/span>and their behavior. Poverty is not the\nlack of worldly goods \u2013 and I\u2019ll speak to that momentarily. Poverty is not a\nlack of money. Poverty is a curse. It can be a generational curse, passed on\ndown from <\/span>generation to generation\nto generation. We\u2019ll talk about <\/span>where <\/span>it <\/span>begins <\/span>in <\/span>a <\/span>couple\n<\/span>of <\/span>minutes.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

As\nyou all know, I grew up in Eskimo villages, the older of two sons of missionary\nparents. We never had a lot, but we never did without. Dad was frugal, but he\nwasn\u2019t poor. He never had lots of money, but he was never broke. My brother and\nI learned how to do a lot of things growing up. Because Dad was a pioneer\nmissionary and a church builder, we grew up helping him build churches.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Well,\nwhen you do that, you learn lots of skills. We learned carpentry, cabinet\nmaking, hanging sheetrock, taping and texturing, painting, electrical and\nplumbing skills. We learned how to lay tile and carpet. We learned how to\nrepair engines. If it was mechanical, we could make it work. If it was\nelectrical, we could take it apart and fix it. We learned how to do just about\nanything you could think of.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We\ndidn\u2019t have lots of money, but we could take other folks\u2019 \u201cjunk\u201d they threw\naway and make it work. Nobody had to give us a fish and feed us for a day. We had\nthe skills to fish and take care of our needs. I\u2019m using the popular metaphor,\nyou understand.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Because\nDad taught us many skills, and we learned many others on our own, there was\nnever a task set before us or a need that cropped up that we couldn\u2019t take care\nof.\u00a0 <\/span>We were taught something far more\nimportant, however, than the physical job skills.\u00a0 <\/span>We were <\/span>given <\/span>an <\/span>attitude <\/span>that <\/span>shaped <\/span>our <\/span>lives: <\/span>a \u201ccan do\u201d attitude.\u00a0 <\/span>Nothing was impossible in the natural because\nwe had the skills to accomplish anything we wanted to do.\u00a0 <\/span>By <\/span>the\nsame token, nothing was impossible in the spiritual realm because we had the\nLord.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

There were lots of times when we had\nonly a few dollars, but we were never poor.\u00a0\n<\/span>We never saw our- selves that way. If we needed something, we made it \u2013\noften from scratch.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Were\nwe exceptional people \u2013 unusually gifted or something like that?\u00a0 <\/span>Sure, but not the way you think.\u00a0 <\/span>It wasn\u2019t our natural gifts and abilities\nthat made us exceptional.\u00a0 <\/span>It was a\nmindset of prosperity.\u00a0 <\/span>It was thinking\nand agreeing with the Lord.\u00a0 <\/span>We never\nthought \u201cpoor.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I\nremember getting these \u201cmissionary barrels\u201d that would come in once a year on\nthe ship.\u00a0 <\/span>A \u201cmissionary barrel\u201d is\nusually a cardboard barrel or 55-gallon drum with a removable lid.\u00a0 <\/span>Churches and individuals would send us these\nthings with used clothing <\/span>\u2013 <\/span>and <\/span>a <\/span>lot <\/span>of <\/span>junk <\/span>folks <\/span>just <\/span>wanted <\/span>to <\/span>throw\naway, but thought they would get credit from\n<\/span>the Lord for their \u201cgiving.\u201d In later years, when I took over the\nmission station at Wainwright on a temporary basis, and then again at Saint\nPaul Island, we were still receiving \u201cmissionary barrels\u201d with \u2013 get this! \u2013\nused tea bags. It was a riot!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We\nfelt sorry for folks whose mentality worked like that.\u00a0 <\/span>They were the ones that were poor.\u00a0 <\/span>It was a blessing, though. Mom taught us\nanother skill: sewing.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Yeah, I know \u2013\nboys sewing their own clothes?\u00a0 <\/span>We can\nlaugh about it, but I learned to tailor my own clothing \u2013 and I did for many,\nmany <\/span>years.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

When\nDella and I first got married, and we were starting from scratch, we often\nlooked for bargains \u2013 not at the used clothing stores, but at the expensive\nstores where they sold name brand clothing. You could <\/span>buy, <\/span>for <\/span>example,\n<\/span>a <\/span>$300 <\/span>or <\/span>$400 <\/span>dress <\/span>or <\/span>skirt <\/span>for\n$50 - $75, and even less. At those prices, you often got stuck <\/span>with <\/span>whatever <\/span>sizes <\/span>they <\/span>had <\/span>in <\/span>stock,\n<\/span>and <\/span>rarely got to purchase\nsomething that actually fit <\/span>properly.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

No\nproblem. I looked for something one or two or three sizes too big and then\nresized it on the sewing machine. Della dressed like a queen in those early\ndays for a fraction of what we\u2019d have had to pay normally. I purchased cashmere\nsport jackets for pennies on the dollar and retailored them to fit. Hey, I\nlooked like a million dollars!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

No\none ever knew we didn\u2019t have money. And we never thought of ourselves as being\npoor.\u00a0 <\/span>Beginning to get the picture\naren\u2019t you?\u00a0 <\/span>It wasn\u2019t the money, or lack\nof it. It was the attitude, the mindset, the thought process that pervaded our\nthinking.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We\nwere blessed! We enjoyed the blessings of God.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Poverty\n\u2013 true poverty \u2013 begins in the way you approach life. It be- gins in whether\nyou hang on to everything you have for dear life, or whether you freely give\nwhat you have. Poverty \u2013 or prosperity \u2013 be- gins in how and whether we apply a\nprinciple that Jesus taught.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Luke <\/span>6:38<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/b>\u201cGive, <\/span>and <\/span>it <\/span>shall\n<\/span>be <\/span>given unto you; good\nmeasure, pressed down, <\/span>and <\/span>shaken\n<\/span>together, <\/span>and <\/span>running over, \u00a0<\/span><\/span>shall \u00a0<\/span><\/span>men\n\u00a0<\/span><\/span>give\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>into\n\u00a0<\/span><\/span>your\n\u00a0<\/span><\/span>bosom.\n\u00a0<\/span><\/span>For\nwith \u00a0<\/span><\/span>the \u00a0<\/span><\/span>same\n<\/span>measure\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>that \u00a0<\/span><\/span>ye \u00a0<\/span><\/span>mete \u00a0<\/span><\/span>withal it shall be measured to you\nagain.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

So\nmany folks are stuck with the mindset that in order to get and to have\n\u201cthings,\u201d you\u2019ve got to hang onto everything you get.\u00a0 <\/span>The attitude has become a clich\u00e9 for\ngenerations: \u201cGet all you can and can all you get.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Wrong!\u00a0 <\/span>That\u2019s a sure sign of someone who has been\ncaught with and in the Spirit of Poverty.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Want\nto stay broke all of your life?\u00a0 <\/span>Want to\nalways be in need?\u00a0 <\/span>Want to struggle all\nthe time to pay your bills?\u00a0 <\/span>Want to live\nin a run-down house that doesn\u2019t meet the need of your family?\u00a0 <\/span>Want to drive a car that always breaks down\nand winds up costing more in maintenance than car payments on a new or newer\nvehicle?\u00a0 <\/span>Want to have lousy credit and\nbe unable to be trusted by creditors because you never keep your word on making\nyour payments?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We\ncould go on and on with these questions.\u00a0\n<\/span>They all reflect the status of people who either live in real poverty or\nare stuck with a Spirit of Poverty.\u00a0 <\/span>Hate\nto say it, but I know a lot of folks who live exactly like what I\u2019ve just\ndescribed.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Then\nthere\u2019s those folks who live in homes costing many hundreds of thousands of\ndollars, or even millions of dollars, drive a BMW or Mercedes, wear designer\nclothing \u2013 and are up to their eyeballs in debt, just staying ahead of their\ncreditors.\u00a0 <\/span>They put on a show of prosperity,\nbut the fact is they are stuck with a Spirit of Poverty and are trying to hide\nit behind a false display of prosperity.\u00a0\n<\/span>Fact is, they are living in true poverty!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Their <\/span>lifestyles <\/span>are <\/span>those <\/span>of <\/span>a\nlife of fantasy! They aren\u2019t real. They <\/span>are <\/span>living <\/span>like <\/span>this <\/span>because\nthey need to \u201cfeel good.\u201d They need to \u201ckeep up with <\/span>the Jones.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>They can\u2019t\nafford to look <\/span>to <\/span>their\n<\/span>neighbors, <\/span>relatives or\nfriends like they have need \u2013 that would be awful <\/span>!!\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Here\u2019s the worst part\nof it. They are professing Christians.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

So where does this mindset begin? In\nkeeping. In receiving. In hanging onto. In believing that you can\u2019t accomplish\nsomething \u2013 anything!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

But\nit has a root that goes way back!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We\nseem to go back to the Garden again and again, and this is no exception.\nConsider the way the conversation ensues when the Serpent first begins to talk\nto Eve.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Genesis\n3:1-5<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span>\u00a0\n<\/span><\/span>Now\nthe serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the LORD God had\nmade. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every\ntree of the garden? \u00a0<\/span><\/o:p><\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And the woman said unto the\nserpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: \u00a0<\/span><\/sup>But of the fruit of the tree which is<\/i>\nin the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither\nshall ye touch it, lest ye die.\u00a0 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And the serpent said unto the\nwoman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat\nthereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good\nand evil.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Are\nyou seeing it? Do you see the psychology that the Serpent uses on Eve?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u201cGod\nis just pulling a fast one on you! You are not really \u201cas gods!\u201d You don\u2019t have\nthe image and likeness of God. You are substandard.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cBUT! If you will partake of the fruit of the\nTree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, THEN you will be \u201cas God\u201d with the\nability to know Good and Evil just like He does.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

What\na farce! What a fraud!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

What\nyou are seeing is the same hogwash that Satan pulls on Christians every day of\nthe week. As long <\/span>as <\/span>we <\/span>believe <\/span>in <\/span>our <\/span>heart\n<\/span>of <\/span>hearts <\/span>that <\/span>we <\/span>can never measure up to the standard by\nwhich <\/span>we were <\/span>created, <\/span>we\u2019ve <\/span>opened\n<\/span>the <\/span>door <\/span>in <\/span>our <\/span>lives <\/span>for\nthe Spirit of <\/span>Poverty.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Poverty\nisn\u2019t the absence<\/u> of money, property, possessions. etc.\u00a0 <\/span>Poverty is the presence of fear, of unbelief,\nof doubt.\u00a0 <\/span>The presence of fear, unbelief\nor doubt establishes your whole mode of thinking, your attitude towards life, your\nattitude towards money, your attitude to- wards possessions. It is the Spirit\nof Poverty.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Want\nto be broke all the time? Be in fear of what might happen tomorrow. Doubt your\nabilities. Doubt God\u2019s promises to you. Think broke!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Want to live your life in continual\nneed of this or that? Don\u2019t believe that God has given you ability to do any-\nthing you need to do. Let yourself get run over by circumstances. Be defeated\nby other people\u2019s attitudes and comments toward you. Think <\/span>failure!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Want to live with physical ailments\nor diseases? Want to live believing that you are a candidate for cancer, for\nheart attacks, for every disease <\/span>under <\/span>the <\/span>sun? <\/span>Then <\/span>listen <\/span>to <\/span>what <\/span>the <\/span>doctors <\/span>say to you. Accept their prognosis. Don\u2019t\nbelieve that Jesus paid the price for all sickness, all disease, all <\/span>weakness.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Now I\u2019m really going to mess with\nyou and say some- thing <\/span>that <\/span>sounds\n<\/span>almost <\/span>contradictory <\/span>to <\/span>what <\/span>I <\/span>just <\/span>said. But this is still <\/span>true.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Want to fail at everything you do?\nWant to go broke and\/or bankrupt every so often? Think more of yourself and\nyour abilities than you do of God\u2019s desire to provide for every need. Become\none of those folks who think \u201cGod helps those who help themselves.\u201d Brother! Is\nthat ever a bunch of hooey!! That\u2019s just an excuse for secular human- ism\nreplacing our trust and dependence in the Lord.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I\u2019ve got some advice for folks who\nbelieve that nonsense.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cGod help them\nthat get caught helping themselves!\u201d\u00a0\n<\/span>[grin]<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

OK. Now, let\u2019s get down to some real\nprinciples behind the poverty thinkset. There are spiritual principles which,\nwhen violated, result in poverty.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Let me say in advance that poverty\nis a curse. It is not a blessing. It is not the purpose, the will or desire of\nthe Lord for God\u2019s people to live in poverty. Before I get too far along with\nthis, and some of you jump to the conclusion that I think all Christians should\nlive in the lap of luxury, forget it! This is not what that is about. And yet,\nto sound <\/span>contradictory, <\/span>there\n<\/span>is <\/span>absolutely nothing wrong\nwith Christians living in the lap of luxury \u2013 as long as it is not a debt\nlifestyle!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

That said, take a look with me at\ntwo very important spiritual principles.\u00a0\n<\/span>This first principle deals with honoring the Lord, and keeping His\ncommandments (And I\u2019m not necessarily referring to the Ten Commandments.)<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We\u2019ll get into the blessing side of\nthis in the next couple of weeks, but let me show you the poverty side\nfirst.\u00a0 <\/span>We won't look at the whole thing,\nhere.\u00a0 <\/span>You can read it for yourself in\nDeuteronomy 28.\u00a0 <\/span>For the sake of our\ndiscussion, we will just take ten verses.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Deuteronomy\n28:15-26<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>But\nit shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy\nGod, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command\nthee this day; that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee: \u00a0<\/span><\/sup>Cursed shalt<\/i> thou be<\/i> in\nthe city, and cursed shalt<\/i> thou be<\/i> in the field. \u00a0<\/span><\/sup>Cursed shall be<\/i> thy basket and\nthy store. \u00a0<\/span><\/sup><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Cursed shall be<\/i> the\nfruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy land, the increase of thy kine, and the\nflocks of thy sheep. \u00a0<\/span><\/sup>Cursed shalt<\/i>\nthou be<\/i> when thou comest in, and cursed shalt<\/i> thou be<\/i> when\nthou goest out. \u00a0<\/span><\/sup>The LORD\nshall send upon thee cursing, vexation, and rebuke, in all that thou settest\nthine hand unto for to do, until thou be destroyed, and until thou perish\nquickly; because of the wickedness of thy doings, whereby thou hast forsaken\nme.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The LORD shall make the\npestilence cleave unto thee, until he have consumed thee from off the land,\nwhither thou goest to possess it. \u00a0<\/span><\/sup>The\nLORD shall smite thee with a consumption, and with a fever, and with an\ninflammation, and with an extreme burning, and with the sword, and with\nblasting, and with mildew; and they shall pursue thee until thou perish.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And thy heaven that is<\/i>\nover thy head shall be brass, and the earth that is under thee shall be<\/i>\niron. \u00a0<\/span><\/sup>The LORD shall make the\nrain of thy land powder and dust: from heaven shall it come down upon thee,\nuntil thou be destroyed. \u00a0<\/span><\/sup>The\nLORD shall cause thee to be smitten before thine enemies: thou shalt go out one\nway against them, and flee seven ways before them: and shalt be removed into\nall the kingdoms of the earth.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

You\nget the picture, I'm sure.\u00a0 <\/span>All of this\nwas predicated on disobeying the voice and the commandment of the Lord.\u00a0 <\/span>And I know that many of you will respond\nimmediately and say, "Well that was under the Law.\u00a0 <\/span>We are under Grace, now."<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

No,\nyou're not!\u00a0 <\/span>Grace is the empowerment to\nwalk and live the Word of the Lord.\u00a0 <\/span>Grace\nis what we have IN Christ Jesus.\u00a0 <\/span>Grace\nis not an excuse to live like you want and expect to walk in the blessings of\nthe Lord.\u00a0 <\/span>Grace is the ability to walk\nin the love of the Lord Jesus Christ -- and that encompasses total obedience to\nHim.\u00a0 <\/span>Walk outside of His Grace, and\nconsequences result.\u00a0 <\/span>I'll pick it up\nhere, next week.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n
