Deliver Us From Evil, Part 4<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

All we did last week was to scratch the surface in dealing with\nthe camouflage and concealment that evil spirits use to make us think that what\nwe are dealing with is our own personalities.\u00a0\n<\/span>I never got to describing how in certain photos (which I have shared in\nour fellowship, but not in these Coffee Breaks), the objective was to\ndemonstrate the fact that evil spirits often hide themselves in objects \u2014 just\nabout every object you can think of \u2014 and in some cases the most unlikely\nthings.\u00a0 <\/span>Missionaries often come back\nfrom countries where witchcraft and superstition reign supreme.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

Unfortunately, they often pick up pictures or \u201cthings of\nartistic value\u201d that in fact are objects of demonic worship.\u00a0 <\/span>They introduce into their homes the same evil\nspirits associated with those objects, and then wonder why they are suffering\nvarious afflictions.\u00a0 <\/span>Let me talk about\nsome of those things today.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

\nDuring my years at Long Beach Christian\nCenter, our ministry staff dealt with many similar scenes.\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019ll never forget the day when Josie called\nme in a panic.\u00a0 <\/span>She asked if I could come\nover to her home.\u00a0 <\/span>I took Dick Parrish\nwith me to see what her issue was.\u00a0 <\/span>She\nhad taken down a painting from her living room wall that her husband had\nbrought back from Mexico and placed it in a coat closet.\u00a0 <\/span>It was one of those paintings done on black\nvelvet (there is a lot of Mexican art done this way) and the scene looked like\nsomething straight out of Hell.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

As\nsoon as we saw the painting, we told Josie to burn it.\u00a0 <\/span>She got some matches and attempted to light\nit on fire.\u00a0 <\/span>There was nothing about this\npicture that suggested it was fire-proof.\u00a0\n<\/span>It was nothing more than velvet cloth on a wood frame.\u00a0 <\/span>Yet, it would not light.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

She\ntook some twigs and built a small bonfire and set the picture on the fire.\u00a0 <\/span>Still it would not catch fire.\u00a0 <\/span>Finally, we commanded that picture to burn in\nJesus\u2019 Name.\u00a0 <\/span>This time she simply took a\nmatch to it.\u00a0 <\/span>It was as strange a scene\nas you\u2019ve ever seen.\u00a0 <\/span>The picture burned\nall right, but it started at the top and burned to the bottom.\u00a0 <\/span>No attempts to light the picture on fire from\nthe bottom worked, but that single match touched to the top of the painting did\nit!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Josie\nsubsequently told us that the household had been suffering with every kind of\nsickness and affliction ever since her husband had brought it back from\nMexico.\u00a0 <\/span>He, too, had been a victim.\u00a0 <\/span>From the moment that the picture was\ndestroyed, there was a change in the atmosphere in the home.\u00a0 <\/span>We proclaimed and declared the authority of\nthe Lord Jesus Christ and the Kingdom of God throughout that home.\u00a0 <\/span>The sicknesses and afflictions were gone in\nless than 24 hours.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

David\nDobbs was a member of our ministry staff at Long Beach Christian Center.\u00a0 <\/span>One Sunday, we didn't see Dave in either the\nmorning worship service, or the evening worship service.\u00a0 <\/span>I got home that night after the service and\nmy phone rang.\u00a0 <\/span>It was Dave\u2019s wife, Pam.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u201cI need you to come over right away!\u00a0 <\/span>Dave has been really sick, and he seems to be\nslipping into a coma or something like that.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I\ncalled Dick Parrish again, and he met me at their house.\u00a0 <\/span>Dave looked terrible.\u00a0 <\/span>When I saw him, my first instinct was\nwitchcraft.\u00a0 <\/span>I knew Dave\u2019s mother had\nbeen a missionary in South America for a number of years, so I said to him,<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u201cDave,\ndid your mother bring back any trinkets or gifts when she returned from South\nAmerica?\u00a0 <\/span>Did she bring back any masks or\ntotem-like items?\u00a0 <\/span>How about paintings?\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

He\nnodded and said to Pam, \u201cThere\u2019s a whole boxful of that stuff in our\ncloset.\u00a0 <\/span>Mom just brought it over and left\nit with me.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I\nlooked at Pam and said, \u201cWould you get that box, please?\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

She\ndid so and brought it out.\u00a0 <\/span>Indeed, it\nwas full of the items I\u2019d just described.\u00a0\n<\/span>Dick and I prayed and cast out the spirit of witchcraft from the house\nand any spells it had brought on Dave.\u00a0\n<\/span>We spoke healing and health to him, and he immediately recovered.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I\nthen said to Dave, \u201cAfter you get dressed and are up and about, you need to\ndestroy those items.\u00a0 <\/span>Light up your\nfireplace and burn them.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

He\nagreed, and Dick and I left for our homes.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

It\ncouldn\u2019t have been much more than an hour later when Dave called me.\u00a0 <\/span>He held up his phone so that I could hear\nstrange and eerie noises.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u201cThat\u2019s\ncoming out of the fireplace,\u201d he said.\u00a0\n<\/span>Some of those artifacts are literally screaming!\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I\nsaid to Dave, \u201cOK.\u00a0 <\/span>Hang on.\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019m coming back over.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

When\nI got there, he was using the poker to push some of the totem-like figures back\ninto the fire.\u00a0 <\/span>They kept wiggling out of\nthe fire and making all kinds of noises.\u00a0\n<\/span>What was even more strange was that they were made of wood.\u00a0 <\/span>They should have caught fire and burned\nimmediately without question.\u00a0 <\/span>Dave had\nto hold his poker on them in the fire for quite some time before the noises\nceased and they actually caught fire.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

There\nwas palpable change in the atmosphere in his home when they all burned to ash.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

That,\nhowever, was not the end of things for Dave.\u00a0\n<\/span>Even though he recovered and was doing so much better, there were more\nevents to follow.\u00a0 <\/span>In the days that\nfollowed, Dave called me one morning to report that a triangular section of\ncarpet had been ripped up out of the floor in their living room, and the floor\nunderneath was charred as though a fire had been burning there.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

When\nI came over to inspect the damage, Pam told me something she had not reported\nbefore.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u201cThis\nhouse was my mother\u2019s house.\u00a0 <\/span>She was a\npracticing witch and held all kinds of ceremonies here with other witches.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u201cBrother!\u00a0 <\/span>Does that ever explain a lot,\u201d I exclaimed.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I\ncalled both Dwain and Dick to join me with Dave and Pam as we walked throughout\never room in that house, declaring the rulership of the Kingdom of God,\ndeclaring the peace and rest of the Holy Spirit, and commanding every wicked\nspirit that had taken up residence in the place to depart.\u00a0 <\/span>We even held the doors open to the house to\nusher the evil spirits out of the place.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

That\nwas the end of those kinds of displays for Dave and Pam, and it certainly was a\nvivid and visual demonstration of how the Enemy seeks to steal, kill and\ndestroy the people of God.\u00a0 <\/span>It was also a\nvery clear demonstration of the authority we have in Christ Jesus.\u00a0 <\/span>The cleansing of that house stuck.\u00a0 <\/span>It was the end of the attacks \u2014 at least of\nthat kind \u2014 on Dave and Pam.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Let\u2019s\nchange course for a bit in this discussion.\u00a0\n<\/span>Throughout the years, I have on occasion had folks accuse me of casting\nout evil spirits because I, myself, was under the control of demons.\u00a0 <\/span>That\u2019s about as ludicrous and illogical a\nstatement as you can get.\u00a0 <\/span>Listen to what\nJesus said when he made the following statement:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Luke 11:17-20<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>Every kingdom\ndivided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided<\/i>\nagainst a house falleth. If Satan also be divided against himself, how shall\nhis kingdom stand? because ye say that I cast out devils through Beelzebub. And\nif I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your sons cast them<\/i> out?\ntherefore shall they be your judges. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/sup>But if I with the\nfinger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Jesus\nmakes it abundantly clear that He only needs his little finger to cast out\ndemons.\u00a0 <\/span>They are nothing compared to His\npower and authority!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Now\nHe lays out a set of spiritual principles that help us to understand where our\nstrength lies, and how we can mark of evidence of these wicked spirits who\ninvade and torment.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Luke 11:21-26<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>When a strong\nman armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace: <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/sup>But when a stronger\nthan he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his\narmour wherein he trusted, and divideth<\/span> his spoils.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathereth not\nwith me scattereth.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through\ndry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he saith, I will return unto my\nhouse whence I came out. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/sup>And when he cometh,\nhe findeth<\/span> it<\/i> swept and garnished. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/sup>Then goeth he, and\ntaketh to him<\/i> seven other spirits more wicked than himself; and they\nenter in, and dwell there: and the last state<\/i> of that man is worse than\nthe first.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Let\u2019s\nbreak this down.\u00a0 <\/span>He says, <\/span>\u201cWhen\na strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace<\/span>.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus is making it clear that we must be on\nguard at all times.\u00a0 <\/span>We must be\nconstantly armed with the armament He has provided.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nrest of that statement is about as clear and unmistakable as can be.\u00a0 <\/span>If the \u201cstrong man\u201d isn\u2019t stronger than the\nwicked spirit that comes his way, then that evil spirit destroys his armor and\ntakes away his goods and his peace.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Remember\nwhat Jesus said in John?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

John 10:10<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>The thief cometh not,\nbut for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have\nlife, and that they might have it<\/i> more abundantly.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nkey to understanding Jesus\u2019 statement concerning <\/span>\u201cwhen a\nstronger than he shall come upon him and overcome him,\u201d<\/span> is that the thief\nuses his cunning and deception as his strength \u2014 a strength which is\ndeceptively powerful and appears unbeatable.\u00a0\n<\/span>Again, He makes it obvious that when we are with Him and in Him and He\nin us, we become the \u201cgatherers,\u201d the \u201chealers,\u201d the \u201cdeliverers.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Now\nwe come to as basic a piece of evidence that marks the presence of an evil\nspirit.\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus now says the following:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u201cWhen the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh\nthrough dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he saith, I will return\nunto my house whence I came out.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

What\nis the evil spirit seeking after?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

REST!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Nothing\ncould be clearer.\u00a0 <\/span>When you see someone\nwho struggles with restlessness, they cannot seem to be still, they always have\nto be doing something, they talk incessantly and they are non-stop fidgety, you\nare seeing the manifestation of one or more unclean spirits in that person.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Restlessness\nis the hallmark of every evil spirit!\u00a0\n<\/span>Often, it can be the representation of some kind of violence in the\nperson\u2019s past, or spiritual genesis (and that\u2019s a topic I will get into a bit\nlater).<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Let\nme illustrate.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

A\nfew years ago, a mother came to me after a meeting with her four-year-old\nson.\u00a0 <\/span>He squirmed and squirmed and did\nhis best to get out of her grasp.\u00a0 <\/span>The\nmother said to me, \u201che has always been this way!\u00a0 <\/span>There\u2019s nothing I can do to keep him\nquiet.\u00a0 <\/span>Every so often, he will scream or\njust make strange noises. After hearing you share tonight, I know that he needs\ndeliverance.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I\nasked her if her husband exhibited the same symptoms.\u00a0 <\/span>She replied that he was in prison for a\nseries of violent crimes.\u00a0 <\/span>Holy Spirit\nmade it clear to me in that moment that we were dealing with a spirit of murder\nand violence that had been passed onto the boy.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

She\nhanded the young boy over to me and I sat him in my lap.\u00a0 <\/span>That, in itself, was a interesting\ndisplay.\u00a0 <\/span>I had to wrap my arms around\nhim in order to keep him from beating on me or jumping from my lap.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u201cYou\nspirit of murder and violence, I command you to loose<\/span>\nthis boy in the name of Jesus!\u00a0 <\/span>Come out\nof him, NOW!\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Just\nlike that, everything changed!\u00a0 <\/span>The\nnon-stop struggle ended.\u00a0 <\/span>He looked\nacross at his mother and in a quiet voice said, \u201cMommy!\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>She wept as she took him into her arms.\u00a0 <\/span>He was quiet and peaceable and his whole\ndemeanor had undergone change.\u00a0 <\/span>I later\nlearned that the deliverance held and that he was one very changed\nfour-year-old.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

A\nrather unexpected side effect occurred from that event.\u00a0 <\/span>This took place in a Charismatic church in\nFairbanks.\u00a0 <\/span>When the pastor saw what\nhappened with the boy, he uninvited me from the church.\u00a0 <\/span>I was told that I was no longer welcome\nthere.\u00a0 <\/span>That came as a bit of a surprise,\nto say the least.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

However,\nwhat had happened was that an enemy that had taken up residence in him was\nexposed and it made him restless.\u00a0 <\/span>Some\nof the elders witnessed this restlessness and paid attention.\u00a0 <\/span>It soon became clear that he was \u2014 and had\nbeen \u2014 having an affair with one of the women in the church.\u00a0 <\/span>The pastor was forced to step down for a time\nuntil he received deliverance and underwent a period of repentance and healing\nwith his family.\u00a0 <\/span>About a year later, he\nwas restored to his pastorate.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Just\nbecause a person may be a great leader, a wonderful pastor, or a terrific\nteacher, does not mean that he or she is impervious to attack.\u00a0 <\/span>It all comes back to Jesus\u2019 analogy of one\nwho is armed and keeps his palace, but when one who is stronger than he comes\nupon him, he loses his goods and his peace.\u00a0\n<\/span>In this instance, this particular pastor had an area of his life that\nwas not covered spiritually and protected from an assault by the Enemy.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We\u2019ve\nseem this happen repeatedly to some very great and very public people in\nministry \u2014 televangelists whose ministries were \u2014 to all intents and purposes \u2014\nprospering and doing great things for the Kingdom.\u00a0 <\/span>Unfortunately, their own armor was poorly\nprotected or used, and they became prey to \u201ca stronger than they!\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>Some of them have been delivered, set free,\npaid the price for their failures, and restored to their places of ministry.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

One\nof the problems that we run into again and again is the fear that folks have in\naddressing evil spirits.\u00a0 <\/span>The whole\nsubject of deliverance is almost taboo in many circles.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

People\nsay, \u201cOh, I can\u2019t do that!\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Bahh,\nHumbug!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

All we did last week was to scratch the surface in dealing with the camouflage and concealment that evil spirits use to make us think that what we are dealing with is our own personalities.
