\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

I want to continue where we left off last week in dealing\nwith the spirit of compromise that has grossly affected our society \u2013 AND \u2013 the\nbody of Christ to a large extent!\u00a0 <\/span>Excuse\nme in advance, if I stomp on your toes or touch a sensitive nerve.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

Let\u2019s\ntalk about a touchy subject \u2013 well, touchy to political types, anyway.\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019m fixin\u2019 to go over the edge today.\u00a0 <\/span>Way over the edge!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

When\nDad passed away, I inherited a ruler he kept on his desk for many years.\u00a0 <\/span>It had a phrase I\u2019ve always considered to be\nclassic.\u00a0 <\/span>The ruler was a gift from a\ngroup of pastors who decided that Dad was one of the greatest diplomats they\u2019d\never met.\u00a0 <\/span>He had gotten pulled into some\nkind of fracas and policy disagreement between these church leaders \u2013\ndenominational leaders \u2013 and after listening to them for a few minutes, offered\na bit of really sage advice.\u00a0 <\/span>It cooled\nthe hot tempers and shut the argument down in nothing flat.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nphrase on the ruler?\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cDiplomacy: the art\nof letting someone else have your way.\u201d\u00a0\n<\/span>Classic, isn\u2019t it?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Dad\nwas one of those kind of people who was the penultimate diplomat.\u00a0 <\/span>He could walk into any controversy and cool\nthe debate with just a few words to all the parties in the controversy.\u00a0 <\/span>He understood the difference, too, between\ndiplomacy and compromise.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Compromise,\nyou see, is the art of altering one\u2019s standards in order to keep peace in a\nsituation.\u00a0 <\/span>There\u2019s a huge difference\nbetween diplomacy and compromise.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

A few\nyears ago, when I was running for Congress, I had the opportunity to debate\nboth my Republican Primary opponent, and the two Democrats who were opposing\neach other in the Democratic Primary.\u00a0\n<\/span>Two of our debates were televised.\u00a0\n<\/span>Two or three of them were more like candidate forums in which we simply\nexpressed our views without actually contesting the views of our opponents.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Sitting\nat the lunch table (during one of the candidate forums) next to Lloyd Doggett,\nthe leading Democratic candidate \u2013 and eventual winner of the seat in Congress,\na seat he still holds today \u2013 we were comparing notes with each other on some\nhot-button issues affecting voters in this district.\u00a0 <\/span>It was a friendly discussion.\u00a0 <\/span>We talked about immigration issues.\u00a0 <\/span>We talked about the nation\u2019s economy,\nbalancing the budget \u2013 you name it.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Lloyd\nturned to me just before the forum began and said, \u201cYou know, Regner, you and I\nthink a lot alike on more issues than we disagree on.\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019m much more of a fiscal conservative than\nmost people think I am.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I\nlaughed and said, \u201cToo bad we\u2019re not closer on social issues.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>He responded, \u201cWell, you know that politics\nis a game of compromise.\u00a0 <\/span>We can all\nusually come to a place of agreement if we are willing to compromise a little.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

That\nwas the end of our conversation that day, but his remark really got me to\nthinking.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Compromise\nis what has happened to this country, its morals, its spiritual state, its\neconomy, its social programs \u2013 you name it!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Compromise\nis what happens when folks sell their character, their principles, their\nmorality \u2013 for a bowl of pottage, something else that satiates the needs of\ntheir creature comforts (or someone else\u2019s).<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Compromise\nis what happens when someone trades Truth for some agenda, even if that agenda\nappears to be \u201ca good thing.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Truth\nis often the victim in compromise.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I\u2019ll\nexplain in a second.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Some\nfolks think that Diplomacy is the art of compromise.\u00a0 <\/span>Really?\u00a0\n<\/span>D\u2019you<\/span> think so?\u00a0 <\/span>Maybe it has been relegated to that at times,\nbut to me, diplomacy is the art of bringing disagreeing folks to the place of\nrecognizing a common truth.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We\u2019ll\ncontinue our discussion about diplomacy and compromise, but before we do, I\u2019d\nlike you to at least consider a basic fundamental: truth<\/b>: the thing that often gets lost in the translation when folks\nbegin to compromise with each other, and something that frequently goes down\nthe drain when would-be \u201cdiplomats\u201d start talking.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

What\nis Truth?\u00a0 <\/span>(I\u2019ve shared this before, and\nit deserves repeating!)<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

A\ncollection of facts?\u00a0 <\/span>History?\u00a0 <\/span>Scripture?\u00a0\n<\/span>Experience?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\"Truth\"\nis not a collection of facts.\u00a0 <\/span>And yet it\ncan be.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\"Truth\"\nis neither the reciting of history, nor a compilation of events which have\noccurred.\u00a0 <\/span>And yet it can be.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\"Truth\"\nis not the quoting of scriptures.\u00a0 <\/span>And\nyet it can be.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Facts.\u00a0 <\/span>History.\u00a0\n<\/span>Scriptures.\u00a0 <\/span>They can all be a\nportion of truth, but in and of themselves, they are not<\/b> -- by any\nstretch of the imagination -- truth.<\/o:p><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Facts can be\ntwisted by The Spirit of Error and become a lie.\u00a0 <\/span>History can be distorted -- and often is --\nso that historical facts are taken out of context to present a false\npicture.\u00a0 <\/span>Personal experience, left to\nstand on its own, can bring wrong conclusions.\u00a0\n<\/span>Scriptures can be taken out of context and quoted to support virtually\nany stance one desires to take.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Truth, therefore,\nis not just facts, history, personal experience, or scriptures.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Truth<\/span><\/b> -- the genuine article -- can only\ncome by the Spirit of Truth, which is part of the very character and makeup of\nGod.\u00a0 <\/span>The Spirit of Truth takes facts,\ntakes history, and takes events which have occurred -- either in our lives or\nin the lives of others -- or, takes verses of scripture and applies them in a\nmanner which brings life.\u00a0 <\/span>The Spirit of\nTruth takes that life and transmits it into the core of our beings.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Truth<\/span><\/b> -- the very essence of Jesus' onoma<\/span><\/i><\/b> -- is that which He was clothed\nin.\u00a0 <\/span>It was the life which went forth\nwhen He spoke the worlds into existence.\u00a0\n<\/span>It was the spirit which went forth when He breathed into man the breath\nof life.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Because\neverything He spoke was founded in Truth, there was an absoluteness to\neverything which occurred.\u00a0 <\/span>The very\nfoundations of the Universe rested upon that Truth.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Jesus\nmade the incredible statement, \u201cI AM the Way, the Truth<\/b>, and the Life\u2026.\u201d\u00a0\n<\/span>He was and is The Truth!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

OK?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Now\nthat we\u2019ve laid those foundations for our discussion, let\u2019s come back to\ncompromise and diplomacy.\u00a0 <\/span>I know you\nthink I just took off on some screwball tangent that had nothing to do with\nwhere this discussion started, but bear with me.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

When\nwe first come into this world, certain fundamentals are a part of our\nexistence.\u00a0 <\/span>Even those who are born into\nfamilies that have no spiritual roots and no apparent faith in God still have\nbasic truth incorporated in their genes.\u00a0\n<\/span>There is built into the core of their spiritual nature a fundamental\nrecognition of, and need for, a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s why the entire human race was created in\nthe first place.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We\naren\u2019t just accidents looking for a place to happen.\u00a0 <\/span>We didn\u2019t just randomly occur.\u00a0 <\/span>Everyone of us have a plan and purpose and\ncalling woven into our genetic structure, and it has been there for generation\nafter generation after generation.\u00a0 <\/span>And\nit will continue to be there for generation after generation after generation.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

So\nwhy am I saying all this in a discussion on compromise and diplomacy?\u00a0 <\/span>Because certain basic truths \u2013 whether we\nhave entered into the plan of the Lord Jesus Christ for our lives or not \u2013 are\nintrinsic to every cell and corpuscle of our being.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Compromise\nbegins in our lives when we trade away those truths, even if little by little,\nfor something that satisfies or fulfills a momentary creature need.\u00a0 <\/span>Follow me, if you will, down a path of logic.\u00a0 <\/span>Some folks have referred to me as a\n\u201cspiritual logician.\u201d \u00a0<\/span>I trust that I am\nmore than that \u2013 a whole lot more \u2013 but, nevertheless, follow me along this\npath of spiritual logic.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We\nare triune beings, created in the image of God.\u00a0\n<\/span>What does that mean, anyway?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We\nare, first and foremost, spirit beings.\u00a0\n<\/span>Our spirits are that eternal part of our existence designed to provide\nus with the linkage needed for fellowship with the Lord Jesus Christ.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We\nare, secondly, a soul.\u00a0 <\/span>Our souls were\ndesigned to live forever as well, but whether they do or not depends on\ndecisions we make.\u00a0 <\/span>Our soul incorporates\nour mind, our reason, our compassion, and our emotions.\u00a0 <\/span>Inextricably linked with our spirit, our\nsouls have the ability to override our spirits and make decisions contrary to\nGod\u2019s eternal purposes.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Lastly,\nwe are flesh and blood bodies.\u00a0 <\/span>Our\nbodies also have desires.\u00a0 <\/span>They have\nneeds.\u00a0 <\/span>Our bodies are the determining\nfactors in so-called \u201ccreature comforts.\u201d\u00a0\n<\/span>Our bodies were designed to live forever \u2013 at least when creation first\ntook place \u2013 but the partaking of the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge in the\nGarden, the contamination of our souls with the HIV of the knowledge of good\nand evil, and subsequent loss of fellowship with God took care of our natural\n\u201cforever existence\u201d in a hurry.\u00a0 <\/span>That, of\ncourse, was before Jesus redeemed us from the curse!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Now,\nback to compromise.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Compromise\nis what happens within ourselves when we trade Truth for creature\ncomforts.\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s what takes place when\nspiritual realities take second place to rational thinking.\u00a0 <\/span>Reason is the enemy of our souls, and the\nenemy of our spirits.\u00a0 <\/span>Reason \u2013 human\nreasoning \u2013 rationalizes physical needs, weighs them against \u201cpossibilities,\u201d\ndetermines a \u201cprobable\u201d outcome based on that rationalization without taking\nspiritual realities into account, and makes a compromised decision.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We\nmake a compromised decision once; then twice; then three times; and pretty\nsoon, compromise is a natural part of our daily decision processes.\u00a0 <\/span>Spiritual realities get left in the dust.\u00a0 <\/span>The needs of our flesh take precedence and soon\nbecome the ruling factor.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Many\nfolks wake up one day and realize they are successful in many areas of life \u2013\nand totally unfulfilled.\u00a0 <\/span>Year after year\nafter year have gone by while they satiate the needs of their souls and their\nflesh, yet they have no linkage whatever in their spirits with the Spirit of\nGod.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Because\nJesus\u2019 claims require such wholesale change in our thought processes, many\nfolks turn to religions instead \u2013 all kinds of religions \u2013 in an effort to\nquiet their raging spirits.\u00a0 <\/span>Religions,\nyou see, create man-made methods and methodologies in which folks can\nrationalize with their minds ways to please God, and thereby \u201cfeel good\u201d about\nhaving met the requirements of their spirits.\u00a0\n<\/span>Especially when those religions are supposedly \u201cChristian.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In so\ndoing, they compromise away the Truth.\u00a0\n<\/span>Truth is the one essential that disappears with religion.\u00a0 <\/span>Doctrine and dogma replace Truth.\u00a0 <\/span>And with their minds, people rationalize away\nthe Truth with their doctrines and dogmas, actually believing and justifying\nwithin themselves that they have Truth!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Our\nsociety today is so compromised that it has become part and parcel of human\nexistence.\u00a0 <\/span>When I first began to enter\nthe world of politics, many of my friends warned me that I have would have to\nlearn how to compromise, and that I would ultimately have to compromise the\nTruth at the core of my being in order to survive.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

No\nsir!\u00a0 <\/span>There are folks in the political\nrealm today who refuse to compromise Truth.\u00a0\n<\/span>These are often the ones that compromisers often call bigots, racists,\nright-wing radicals and \u201cout of touch with reality.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>Our society is largely out of touch with\nreality, so those people who really understand Truth are frequently treated as\nlepers.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I\ncan\u2019t tell you that I will ever be elected to political office one day.\u00a0 <\/span>I can tell you, however, that I long ago made\nthe decision to never<\/b> compromise\nTruth!\u00a0 <\/span>In the world of politics, there\nare issues that are negotiable.\u00a0 <\/span>But\nnegotiations and compromise are not blood brothers.\u00a0 <\/span>Negotiations do not have to result in\ncompromise.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

That\nbrings me back to diplomacy.\u00a0 <\/span>Diplomacy,\nas I have said before, is what I see as the art of bringing folks who sharply\ndisagree back to the place of facing Truth, then dealing with the realities of\nthat Truth.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Although\nI\u2019m not the diplomat my father was, I\u2019m learning.\u00a0 <\/span>My mother and father were poles apart in\ntheir personalities.\u00a0 <\/span>My mother, Lillian\nLorraine Capener, was a no-nonsense woman who spoke her mind and her heart,\nwhether folks liked it or not.\u00a0 <\/span>Dad,\nAlvin Earnest Capener, was one of those folks who could say the same thing, but\nsay it in a way that made hard things palatable.\u00a0 <\/span>One thing for certain, neither one of them\nwere compromisers.\u00a0 <\/span>If it meant\nbulldozing ahead in the face of extreme opposition, they bulldozed; and then\nmade you realize they were right!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Now\nyou know where I get my bulldozing from!\u00a0\n<\/span>Hehehehehe\u2026\u2026.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

OK.\u00a0 <\/span>Enough of all this.\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019ve said all this to make you take a look at\ncompromise.\u00a0 <\/span>Is it part of your life?\u00a0 <\/span>Have you compromised the Truth and traded it\naway for creature comforts, or for religious doctrines and dogmas?\u00a0 <\/span>Have you traded away what you know in your\nspirit in order to satisfy reason and rational thinking?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Just\nthought I\u2019d ask.\u00a0 <\/span>Don\u2019t shout me\ndown.\u00a0 <\/span>Thimk<\/span>!\u00a0 <\/span>Yeah, that\u2019s what I said.\u00a0 <\/span>Thimk<\/span>!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u201cThimk<\/span>\u201d is what happens when you set your mind aside to\nlisten to your spirit.\u00a0 <\/span>My\ndefinition.\u00a0 <\/span>But can I help it if I\u2019m\nright?\u00a0 <\/span>LOLOL<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n\n
