OUR COVENANT, Part 1<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

It has been several years \u2013 14\nyears, in fact \u2013 since I last shared on the nature, the meaning and the\nsignificance of Covenant, and the fact that we are Covenant beings, living in\nand under the Covenant that Jesus made for us with His death and resurrection,\nand the blood He shed on our behalf.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

My understanding has grown a lot\nduring these years, and it is time for us to launch into it again.\u00a0 <\/span>What many folks miss out on is the fact that\neven America was founded under a covenant made between our early settlers and\nthe Lord Jesus Christ.\u00a0 <\/span>That covenant was\nexpanded and became the core of the founding of our Declaration of\nIndependence, The Constitution of the United States, and the Bill of\nRights.\u00a0 <\/span>I won\u2019t get into the covenant\nthat formed the United States \u2013 not now, anyway \u2013 because we first need to\nunderstand the enormous difference between a contract, an agreement, and a\ncovenant.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

Today, and\nin the weeks to come, we're going to take a first track as we first delve into\nthe nature of covenant within the biblical and historical concept, and then, in\nthe weeks to come, demonstrate how the whole nature and makeup of covenant\nbecame the foundation for America as a nation.\u00a0 Unfortunately, the idea of\ncovenant has been totally lost in our modern society; and about the only time\nwe even hear the word used is in the legal jargon of attorneys.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Covenant\nis something much more than a binding contract, and the use of the word in\ntoday's legal profession completely loses the intent and purpose of covenant\nwithin its historical and Scriptural context.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Let me\nillustrate by first giving you the current definition of covenant as most\npeople in the legal profession see it.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Encarta\ngives us the following:\u00a0<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Covenant, in law, promise,\nusually under seal, that a certain act shall be performed or shall not be\nperformed, or a solemn declaration under seal that certain facts are true.\nCovenants are used most often in deeds. An express covenant is an express\ndeclaration of intention by the parties to the deed. An implied covenant is\ninferred by the law from certain words in a deed; for example, the law holds\nthat implied in a lease is a covenant that the lessee shall quietly enjoy\npossession of the demised premises as long as the terms of the lease are\nhonored. A similar covenant is implied in absolute transfer of property.
\n
\nA covenant may be collateral, that is, purely personal to the original parties;\nor it may run with the land, so that it can be enforced at the instance of the\nsubsequent owners of the property, although they were not parties to the\noriginal covenant or agreement. Covenants also fall into many other\nclassifications. In the United States covenants affecting title to real estate\nare usually expressed in the form of warranties.<\/span><\/b>
\n
\n<\/span>Now,\nlet's take a look at the history of covenant going back to Creation, and how\nthe original picture of covenant was based in God's love for His people.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

It's\nimportant to understand that the power of covenant is in blood.\u00a0 Let me\nexplain.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Consider Creation.\u00a0\nWhen God created man, He created him in His image and likeness, imbued him with\nhis nature and makeup, and gave to him the same creative power inherent in His\nnature, and instructed him to <\/span>\"have dominion over the fish\nof the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the\nearth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.\"<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In Genesis\n1:28, we are further told that <\/span>\"God blessed them...\"<\/span>\u00a0\n<\/span>The\nHebrew word here is <\/span>\"barak<\/i>\",\n<\/span><\/b>and\nthe connotations of this word extend well beyond the traditional concept of\n\"speaking well of someone,\" or \"pronouncing good.\"\u00a0\nThat word, <\/span>\"barak,<\/i>\"\n<\/span><\/b>brings\nwith it an empowerment, an authority, the ability to carry out and fulfill that\nwhich is good, that which is excellent, that which brings a betterment -- a\nwholeness -- to one's existence.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

What you\nspeak well of or bless, therefore, brings the empowerment of the blessing.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In so\ndoing, the Lord made man to be virtually exactly like Him.\u00a0 I condition the\ndescription with \"virtually\" because in every respect save one, Adam\nand Eve were like the Lord.\u00a0 The one exception was that they were not --\nand could not become -- THE supreme rulers of the universe.\u00a0 Their domain,\nand their dominion, were relegated to the earth as a whole.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Adam and\nEve had the ability to speak things into being, and whatever they spoke was\nso.\u00a0 Genesis tells the following:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Genesis\n2:19<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\n<\/span>\"And out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of\nthe field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he\nwould call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the\nname thereof.\"<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Out of\nAdam's mouth, therefore, came the empowerment and creative ability to speak the\ncharacter and nature and makeup of each animal species into existence.\u00a0\nJust as God spoke the world into existence, Adam spoke the nature and makeup of\nanimals into existence.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

It may\nseem that I'm going around a 40-acre field, but laying this foundation is\ncritical to our understanding of true covenant.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Now,\nconsider the implications of the fall when Adam and Eve ate of the Tree of the\nKnowledge of Good and Evil.\u00a0 I won't take time now to revisit our previous\ndiscussions on all that transpired with that act in terms of its consequences\nto the human race, other than to touch on a single aspect.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Prior to\neating of the forbidden fruit, Adam and Eve were unclothed in the natural\nsense.\u00a0 They wore no clothing, no covering of any kind, and there was\nabsolutely no sense of embarrassment or shame or wonderment.\u00a0 Ever wonder\nwhy?\u00a0 The answer is quite simple.\u00a0 They were clothed in the\nrighteousness of the Lord.\u00a0 They were clothed in His presence.\u00a0 The\nfact that their bodies had no clothing or natural coverings was irrelevant\nbecause the environment of the Lord was total protection.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The act of\neating of the fruit of that tree instantly separated them from the presence of\nthe Lord and His covering.\u00a0 A dawning came in their realization for the\nfirst time that they had no covering.\u00a0 Moving past the discussion that\nensued between them and the Lord to their eviction from the Garden of Eden, we\nread again:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Genesis\n3:21<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\n<\/span>\"Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make coats\nof skins, and clothed them.\"<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Implicit\nin these words are the fact that the Lord had to kill animals in order to make\nthese coats.\u00a0 The Hebrew word used in this passage is \u00f8B\u00f2\u00a0 <\/span>('or): the same word that is used for\nleather, or the skin of an ox (e.g., cowhide).\u00a0 Thus, the Lord slew an ox (or\noxen) to make these coverings, shedding the blood of the animal.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

It is the\nfirst time in scripture where we have evidence of blood being shed.\u00a0 The\nLord has just spoken to the Serpent and said that <\/span>\"I\nwill put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed;\nit shall bruise<\/span> <\/span><\/b>( <\/span>shuph<\/span><\/i><\/b> [cover])<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/b>thy head, and\nthou shalt bruise<\/span> <\/span><\/b>( <\/span>shuph<\/span><\/i><\/b> [cover])<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/b>his\nheel.\"<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The Hebrew\nshuph<\/span><\/i><\/b> translates out in\nseveral different ways as we see it used here in the Genesis 3:15\npassage.\u00a0 The word, covenant, is not used in this instance, but you can\nsee the beginnings of it.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The first\nevidence of covenant, and its significance, really begins in Genesis 15.\u00a0\nMost of you who read these Coffee Breaks are already well aware of Abraham, and\nhow the Lord called him -- first at approximately age 50 -- to leave the land\nof his fathers (Ur of the Chaldees) and follow him into a new land.\u00a0\nAbraham obeyed, but his first obedience was partial because he took his whole\nfamily along.\u00a0 They got as far as Haran -- some 600 or so miles to the\nnorthwest of Ur (in modern-day Syria) -- and settled down.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

25 years\nlater, the Lord spoke to Abraham the second time (see Acts 7:2-4) and\ninstructed him to leave his family and follow Him into a land <\/span>\"which\nI shall show thee.\"<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>This\ntime -- except for taking Lot<\/st1:place> with him -- his\nobedience was much more complete.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

More years\npass.\u00a0 Abraham is pretty firmly ensconced in Canaan<\/st1:place>\nwhen the Lord appears to Abraham (at this point, he still is known by his given\nname, Abram) in a vision and says to him, <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Genesis\n15:1, Ampl<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>\"Fear not,\nAbram: I am your shield, your abundant compensation, and your reward shall be\nexceedingly great.\"<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

By now he\nis in his eighties, and having any abundant compensation and great reward is\nalmost meaningless without an heir who will profit by it, so Abraham says to\nthe Lord, <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\"Lord God, what can you give me seeing I am [going on from\nthis world] childless, and he who shall be the owner and heir of my house is\nthis [steward] Eliezer of Damascus.\"<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The Lord\nquickly responds and says to him, <\/span>\"This man shall\nnot be your heir; but he who shall come from your own body shall be your\nheir.\"<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Then the\nLord takes Abraham outside his tent on a very clear starlit night and instructs\nhim to <\/span>\"Look now toward the heavens, and count the stars, if you\nare able to number them.\u00a0 Then He said to him, So shall your descendants\nbe.\"<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And\nGenesis 15:6 tells us that <\/span>\"Abraham believed in [word\nof] the Lord, and He counted it to him for righteousness.\"<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The Lord\nthen proceeds to tell him, <\/span>\"I am the [same] Lord God\nthat brought thee out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give thee this land to inherit\nit.\"<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

So far so\ngood.\u00a0 Abraham by this time was well aware of the significance of\ncovenant.\u00a0 To inherit is to have heirs.\u00a0 At his age, having children\nis rare, if not impossible, so he says to the Lord -- within the framework of\ncovenant thought, <\/span>\"Whereby shall I know that I shall inherit it.\"<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Now we're\ngoing to see the enactment of covenant.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The Lord\ninstructs Abraham to bring Him <\/span>\"an heifer of three years old, a she-goat of\nthree years old, a ram of three years old, and a turtledove and a young\npigeon.\"<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nanimals are slaughtered, their carcasses divided in two parts and laid out with\neach half facing the other.\u00a0 One bird was placed on one side, and the\nother bird the other side.\u00a0 (I don't have time -- and it isn't relevant to\nthis discussion -- to get into the significance of each of these animals or\nbirds, and their spiritual implications.\u00a0 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We'll save\nthat for some later discussion.)\u00a0 Suffice it to say that the halved\ncarcasses were placed far enough apart that Abraham could stand between them\nand the Lord could pass between them.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nsignificance of this IS relevant since the parties to this covenant would be\nstanding and\/or walking in blood as the covenant was struck.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Next week,\nwe'll pick it up at this juncture and before we continue with the covenant the\nLord cut with Abraham, I'll show you just how covenants were struck and what\nancient history tells us about the cutting of covenant. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Then I'll\nshow you how the Lord fulfilled his half of cutting and enacting the\ncovenant.\u00a0 I use the word \"cut\", by the way, purposefully, since\nthis is the word that occurs in the Hebrew text concerning covenant.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Complete\nand direct obedience to the Word of the Lord always produces tangible and\nlife-giving results.<\/span><\/i>
\n<\/span><\/i>
