Healing for the Soul & Spirit, Part 3<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

Obviously, the Holy Spirit is\nkeeping us in the midst of this study and propelling us to the place where we\nhave no soul wounds of any kind \u2013 and nothing whatever left within of memories\nwhich continue to stab at us internally.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

There is a phrase which Mark used in\nhis Gospel quoting from something Jesus said which is about as picturesque as\nyou can get when you start talking about the wounded soul, the rending of the\nsoul or dealing with the fragmented soul.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

While Mark is the only one of the\nGospel writers who quotes Jesus using this phrase, it is a distinctive Hebrew\nmetaphor which appears numerous times throughout the Old Testament.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

This week, we look at the \u201dworms\u201d\nthat infect the soul.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

Take a look first of\nall at what Jesus said:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Mark 9:42-48<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span><\/b>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>42<\/span><\/sup>And\nwhosoever shall offend one of these<\/i> little ones that believe in me, it\nis better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he were cast\ninto the sea. 43<\/sup>And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is\nbetter for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into\nhell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: 44<\/sup>Where their\nworm dieth not<\/u>, and the fire is not quenched. 45<\/sup>And if thy foot\noffend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than\nhaving two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be\nquenched: 46<\/sup>Where their worm dieth not<\/u>, and the fire is not\nquenched. 47<\/sup>And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better\nfor thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to\nbe cast into hell fire: 48<\/sup>Where their worm dieth not<\/u>, and the\nfire is not quenched.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Just\nas we saw in last week\u2019s study of the man of Gadara and the triple reference to\nthe fact that this man\u2019s \u201cdwelling\u201d was \u201cin the tombs,\u201d we again have a triple\nreference using a very specific Hebrew metaphor: \u201cwhere the worm dieth not.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

While\nJesus\u2019 statement certainly applies to a literal future Hell where people will\nsuffer eternal torment, it also applies to the torment that literally millions\nof Christians suffer today.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

This\nmetaphor, \u201cwhere their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched\u201d refers\nspecifically to a wounding of the soul which is perpetuated by present or past\nsins \u2013 either sins committed by us, or sins committed against us<\/u>.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Vine\u2019s\nExpository Dictionary defines this phrase (using Thayer as a reference) as \u201ca\nworm which preys against dead bodies.<\/u>\u201d\u00a0\n<\/span>It is the torment that a person suffers because of guilt or condemnation\nbecause they either have not received or accepted their forgiveness (actually,\ntheir remission of sins) provided by and through Jesus\u2019 death on the Cross.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We\ncan define the \u201cworm\u201d perhaps a bit more accurately as: a demonic force\nwhich rehearses past failures, past sins and past hurts continually.<\/o:p><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

It\nis a thing which eats at them continually \u2013 and more subconsciously than\nconsciously.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\napostle Paul had quite the description of this when he wrote the following to\nthe Romans:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Romans 7:5-25<\/span><\/u><\/b>: \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/b>5<\/span><\/sup>For\nwhen we were in the flesh, the motions <\/span>(<\/span>\u00f0\u00dc\u00e8\u00e7\u00ec\u00e1<\/span> - <\/span>pathema<\/span><\/i>: an emotion or influencing force, hardship, pain<\/u>)\nof sins, which were by the law, did work in our\nmembers<\/span> (<\/span>\u00ec\u00dd\u00eb\u00ef\u00f2<\/span> - <\/span>melos<\/span><\/i>: parts of the\nbody) to bring forth fruit<\/span> (<\/span>\u00ea\u00e1\u00f1\u00f0\u00ef\u00f6\u00ef\u00f1\u00dd\u00f9<\/span>\n- <\/span>karpophoreo<\/span><\/i>: fertilize,\nto empower, to bring forth<\/u>) unto death. 6<\/sup>But\nnow we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that\nwe should serve in newness of spirit, and not in<\/i> the oldness of the\nletter.\u00a0 <\/span><\/o:p><\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/span>7<\/span><\/sup>What\nshall we say then? Is<\/i> the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin,\nbut by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt\nnot covet. 8<\/sup>But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in\nme all manner of concupiscence <\/span>(<\/span>d\u00f0\u00e9\u00e8\u00f5\u00ec\u00df\u00e1<\/span> - <\/span>epithumia<\/span><\/i>: desire, longing [for something forbidden], lust<\/u>).\nFor without the law sin was<\/i> dead. 9<\/sup>For\nI was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived,\nand I died. <\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

10<\/span><\/sup>And the commandment, which was ordained<\/i> to life, I found to\nbe<\/i> unto death. 11<\/sup>For sin, taking occasion by the commandment,\ndeceived me, and by it slew me<\/i><\/u>. 12<\/sup>Wherefore the law is<\/i>\nholy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good. 13<\/sup>Was then that\nwhich is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear\nsin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment\nmight become exceeding sinful<\/u>.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

14<\/span><\/sup>For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold\nunder sin. 15<\/sup>For that which I do I allow (<\/span>\u00e3\u00e9\u00ed\u00fe\u00f3\u00ea\u00f9 - <\/span>ginosko<\/span><\/i>: knowledge, to perceive, to know\nor understand<\/u>) not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that\ndo I. 16<\/sup>If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law\nthat it is<\/i> good. 17<\/sup>Now then it is no more I that do it,\nbut sin that dwelleth in me<\/u>. 18<\/sup>For I know that in me (that is,\nin my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how<\/i>\nto perform that which is good I find not<\/u>.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

19<\/span><\/sup>For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would\nnot, that I do. 20<\/sup>Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I\nthat do it, but sin that dwelleth in me<\/u>. 21<\/sup>I find then a law,\nthat, when I would do good, evil [the worm] is present with me. 22<\/sup>For\nI delight in the law of God after the inward man: 23<\/sup>But I see\nanother law in my members, warring against the law of my mind [tormenting me in\nmy thoughts], and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my\nmembers. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

24<\/span><\/sup>O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of\nthis death? 25<\/sup>I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then\nwith the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin<\/u>.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/u><\/b><\/p>\n\n

Reading\nPaul\u2019s discourse to the Romans takes on a new dimension in the light of Jesus\u2019\nstatement concerning \u201cwhere the worm dieth not.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Now\nyou begin to see \u201cthe worm\u201d in a practical dimension.\u00a0 <\/span>Paul declares that with his mind he serves\n[and\/or desires to serve] the Law of God, but his flesh goes another way in\nobstinate rebellion.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

That\nobstinate rebellion is \u201cthe worm that dieth not.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>And why do we say this?\u00a0 <\/span>Take a look at one of Isaiah\u2019s prophecies:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Isaiah 14:8-11<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span><\/b>\n\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>8<\/span><\/sup>Yea,\nthe fir trees rejoice at thee, and<\/i> the cedars of Lebanon, saying<\/i>,\nSince thou art laid down, no feller is come up against us. 9<\/sup>Hell\nfrom beneath is moved for thee to meet thee<\/i> at thy coming: it stirreth\nup the dead for thee, even<\/i> all the chief ones of the earth; it hath\nraised up from their thrones all the kings of the nations. 10<\/sup>All\nthey shall speak and say unto thee, Art thou also become weak as we? art thou\nbecome like unto us? 11<\/sup>Thy pomp is brought down to the grave, and<\/i>\nthe noise of thy viols: the worm is spread under thee, and the worms cover\nthee<\/u>.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Notice\nonce again how Jesus phrases things in Mark 9:44, 46, and 48?\u00a0 <\/span>He states that it is better to enter into\nlife \u201chalt\u201d or \u201cmaimed\u201d rather than to be cast into the fire that shall never\nbe quenched \u201cwhere their worm dieth not and the fire is not quenched.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

He\nis describing the \u201cworm\u201d as a force of Hell.\u00a0\n<\/span>It is a torment designed specifically for Satan.\u00a0 <\/span>It is something designed to eat at the core\nof Satan\u2019s being forever!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

That\nsaid, it is a device which he [Satan] uses against people to keep them in\ntorment \u2013 both consciously and unconsciously \u2013 for the purpose of stealing\ntheir walk with God, killing their opportunity to enjoy an overcoming life in\nChrist Jesus, and destroying their natural life.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Remember\nwhat Jesus said?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

John 10:10<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span><\/b>\n\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>10<\/span><\/sup>The\nthief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that\nthey might have life, and that they might have it<\/i> more abundantly.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

When\nLucifer rebelled against God and was thrown out of Heaven, both Isaiah and\nEzekiel prophesied his eternal torment.\u00a0\n<\/span>Isaiah prophesied the worms eating at him both from below and from\nabove.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Ezekiel\nprophesied the eternal fires of Hell literally coming forth out of Lucifer\nhimself in the following prophecy.\u00a0 <\/span>At\nthe same time he differentiates between the fires of God [described as \u201cthe\nstones of fire\u201d] and the destructive fire to come out of Lucifer himself.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Ezekiel 28:14-18<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span><\/b>\n\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>14<\/span><\/sup>Thou\nart<\/i> the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so<\/i>:\nthou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the\nmidst of the stones of fire. 15<\/sup>Thou wast<\/i> perfect in thy ways\nfrom the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>16<\/span><\/sup>By\nthe multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with\nviolence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of\nthe mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst\nof the stones of fire. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

17<\/span><\/sup>Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast\ncorrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the\nground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee. 18<\/sup>Thou\nhast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thine iniquities, by the\niniquity of thy traffic; therefore will I bring forth a fire from the midst\nof thee, it shall devour thee, and I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in\nthe sight of all them that behold thee<\/u>.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Now\nyou can see why Jesus says, \u201c<\/span>it is better for thee to enter into\nlife maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never\nshall be quenched: 44<\/sup>Where their worm dieth not<\/u>, and the fire\nis not quenched.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Do\nyou understand the context of Jesus\u2019 statements?\u00a0 <\/span>Do you see the comparison?\u00a0 <\/span>Are you receiving the revelation of \u201centering\ninto life maimed?\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The essence of what Jesus is saying is this: \u201cEven if you feel as though you would be\nmaimed, halt or blind by getting rid of that thing \u2013 that place of wounding in\nyour soul \u2013 where the Enemy torments you day and night, it is better to enter\ninto life without that torment than hang onto it and suffer the eternal\ntorments of Hell.\u201d<\/o:p><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Once\nagain, that \u201cplace of torment\u201d is a sin \u2013 either one committed by you, or one\ncommitted against you by someone else \u2013 or an offense for which forgiveness\n[remission] on your part is absolutely essential.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Satan\u2019s\ntrick is to keep you from either forgiving yourself {you\u2019re not worthy of forgiveness<\/i>} or from forgiving severe offenses\ncommitted against you.\u00a0 <\/span>So long as that\nunforgiveness exists in your being, Satan has a legal right to torment you; and\nso long as he has that legal right, the \u201cworm\u201d will continue to eat at you and\neat at you and eat at you and eat at you \u2013 ad infinitum!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nwound that the worm eats at is always sin.\u00a0\n<\/span>It is never just the case of a set of circumstances or trying events one\nhas experienced.\u00a0 <\/span>It is something which\nresults in death.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Thus,\nboth Thayer and Vine refer to this worm as one which preys against dead bodies\nor dead flesh.\u00a0 <\/span>In parentheses, Vine\ndefines this worm as a maggot.\u00a0 <\/span>Maggots\nsustain themselves by eating of flesh or bodies which have died.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Sin\nproduces death.\u00a0 <\/span>Sin left unrepented of,\nunforgiven or unremitted always produces death.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

If,\ntherefore, we have some place of wounding by sin, the flesh which is wounded\nbecomes dead flesh that worms can eat at and consume.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In\nmedical science, certain kinds of worms or maggots are often used to eat dead\nflesh from skeletons or bones in order to facilitate autopsies or determine\ncauses of death.\u00a0 <\/span>[See, for example, the\nold TV series, Bones<\/i>.]<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

From\na spiritual standpoint, if we are to enter into life, we must cut off any dead\nflesh or dead (or dying) part of ourselves and give that place in our beings\nover to the Lord Jesus Christ for healing.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We\ncan wrap up today\u2019s discussion with the Scripture we have used in the past two\ndiscussions from Isaiah\u2019s prophecy concerning Jesus.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Isaiah 61:1-3<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span><\/b>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>1<\/span><\/sup>The\nSpirit of the Lord GOD is<\/i> upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to\npreach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the\nbrokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the\nprison to them that are<\/i> bound; 2<\/sup>To proclaim the acceptable\nyear of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our\u00a0 <\/span>God; to comfort all that mourn; 3<\/sup>To\nappoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes<\/u>,\nthe oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness;\nthat they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD,\nthat he might be glorified.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n
