Healing for the Soul & Spirit, Part 2<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

We continue on with last week\u2019s discussion, but this time taking a\ndifferent approach and considering a different aspect of healing for those\nwho\u2019ve been wounded in soul and spirit.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

We\u2019ll start once again with Isaiah\u2019s prophecy \u2013 the same place where Jesus\nstarted His ministry \u2013 as we take up our study with the wounded soul and the\nwounded spirit and see how each area affects the other.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

Isaiah 61:1-3<\/span><\/u>:\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>1<\/span><\/sup>The Spirit of the Lord GOD is<\/i> upon me; because the LORD\nhath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek (<\/span>\u00e5\u00e9\u00f0ˆ\u00f2\u00c8<\/span> -<\/span>€a\u00f2na\u00f2yv<\/span><\/b>:<\/span>depressed in\nmind and circumstances, humble, lowly, poor<\/span>); he\nhath sent me to bind up (<\/span>L\u00e1—\u00e7˜\n-<\/span> <\/span>cha\u00f2bash<\/span><\/b>:<\/span>to wrap fully,\nto heal, to gather back together<\/span>)\u00a0 <\/span>the brokenhearted (<\/span>\u00f8\u00e1—L\u00dc -<\/span> <\/span>sha\u00f2bar<\/span><\/b>:<\/span>crushed,\nbroken in pieces, torn apart<\/span> -- + -- <\/span>\u00e1\u00ec\u00c5 -<\/span> <\/span>le\u00f2b<\/span><\/b>:[<\/span>the\nheart, metaphorically] feelings, the emotions, the will or intellect<\/span>), to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the\nprison to them that are<\/i> bound; 2<\/sup>To proclaim the acceptable\nyear of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our\u00a0 <\/span>God; to comfort (<\/span>\u00ed\u00e7—\u00f0ˆ - <\/span>na\u00f2cham<\/span><\/b>:<\/span>to breathe\nstrongly upon, to ease<\/span>) all that mourn; 3<\/sup>To\nappoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the\noil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness;\nthat they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD,\nthat he might be glorified.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Before we dig into this Word\nagain, take a look at a couple of other relevant scriptures.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Job 24:1-12 (NASB)<\/span><\/u>: \u00a0<\/span><\/span>1<\/span><\/sup>\u201cWhy are times not stored up by the Almighty, and why do those\nwho know Him not see His days?\u00a0 <\/span>2<\/sup>\u201cSome\nremove the landmarks; they seize and devour flocks.\u00a0 <\/span>3<\/sup>\u201cThey drive away the donkeys of\nthe orphans; they take the widow\u2019s ox for a pledge.\u00a0 <\/span>4<\/sup>\u201cThey push the needy aside from\nthe road; the poor of the land are made to hide themselves altogether.\u00a0 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

5<\/span><\/sup>\u201cBehold, as wild donkeys in the wilderness they go forth seeking\nfood in their activity, as bread for their<\/i> children in the desert.\u00a0 <\/span>6<\/sup>\u201cThey harvest their fodder in the\nfield and glean the vineyard of the wicked.\u00a0\n<\/span>7<\/sup>\u201cThey spend the night naked, without clothing, and have no\ncovering against the cold.\u00a0 <\/span>8<\/sup>\u201cThey\nare wet with the mountain rains and hug the rock for want of a shelter.\u00a0 <\/span>9<\/sup>\u201cOthers snatch the orphan from\nthe breast, and against the poor they take a pledge.\u00a0 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

10<\/span><\/sup>\u201cThey cause the poor<\/i> to go about naked without clothing,\nand they take away the sheaves from the hungry.\u00a0\n<\/span>11<\/sup>\u201cWithin the walls they produce oil; they tread wine presses\nbut thirst.\u00a0 <\/span>12<\/sup>\u201cFrom the\ncity men groan, and the souls of the wounded<\/u> <\/span>(<\/span>\u00ec\u00ec\u00c8\u00e7 ˜<\/span>cha\u00f2la\u00f2l:<\/span> <\/span>pierced, to profane [by\nspeaking evil], to dissolve, to break apart or prostitute, to weaken one\u2019s mind\nto such a degree that they are willing to sell themselves for relief<\/span>) cry out; Yet God does not pay attention <\/span>to (<\/span>\u00ed\u00e9N\u00d8 <\/span>s\u00f1Œ\u00f2ym:<\/span> <\/span>impute<\/span>) folly.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The picture that is drawn\nthroughout this chapter in Job conveys a pretty graphic picture of the events\nthat cause a person\u2019s soul to be wounded.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

When you follow the discourse between Job and Bildad the\nShuhite in chapter 25, and then the first part of chapter 26 you see the\nunfolding of events that create a wounded spirit.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Next we consider David, and the words and events that were\ndirected against him.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Psalm 64:1-10<\/span><\/u>: \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>1<\/span><\/sup>Hear my voice, O God, in\nmy prayer: preserve my life from fear<\/u> of the enemy.\u00a0 <\/span>2<\/sup>Hide me from the secret counsel\nof the wicked; from the insurrection of the workers of iniquity: 3<\/sup>Who\nwhet their tongue like a sword, and<\/i> bend their bows to shoot<\/i>\ntheir arrows, even<\/i> bitter words: 4<\/sup>That they may shoot in\nsecret at the perfect: suddenly do they shoot at him, and fear not.\u00a0 <\/span>5<\/sup>They encourage themselves in<\/i>\nan evil matter: they commune of laying snares privily; they say, who shall see\nthem?\u00a0 <\/span>6<\/sup>They search out\niniquities; they accomplish a diligent search: both the inward thought<\/i>\nof every one of them<\/i>, and the heart, is<\/i> deep<\/u>. 7<\/sup>But\nGod shall shoot at them with<\/i> an arrow; suddenly shall they be wounded<\/u>.\u00a0 <\/span>8<\/sup>So they shall make their own\ntongue to fall upon themselves: all that see them shall flee away.\u00a0 <\/span>9<\/sup>And all men shall fear, and shall\ndeclare the work of God; for they shall wisely consider of his doing.\u00a0 <\/span>10<\/sup>The righteous shall be glad in\nthe LORD, and shall trust in him; and all the upright in heart shall glory.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

This is a tremendous promise that God makes to those who\nhave been wounded by the tongue, those who\u2019ve been spoken evil against and\nconspired against.\u00a0 <\/span>The Lord makes very\nclear that HE is the One who will shoot them down \u2013 and He will direct HIS\narrow against those who speak evil of His anointed.\u00a0 <\/span>This was a Word that the Lord gave to Della\nrecently concerning some fellow-ministers who were being spoken evil of because\nof their ministry and their teaching.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Again,\nDavid deals with the wounded soul because of the evil spoken against him, and\nspeaks of the trouble he is in.\u00a0 <\/span>And once\nagain, David notes how deliverance from a wounded soul and spirit comes:\nthrough praise and worship.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Psalm 69:16-33<\/span><\/u>:\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>16<\/span><\/sup>Hear me, O LORD; for thy lovingkindness is<\/i> good: turn\nunto me according to the multitude of thy tender mercies.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

17<\/span><\/sup>And hide not thy face from thy servant; for I am in trouble:\nhear me speedily.\u00a0 <\/span>18<\/sup>Draw\nnigh unto my soul, and<\/i> redeem it<\/u>: deliver me because of mine\nenemies.\u00a0 <\/span>19<\/sup>Thou hast known my\nreproach, and my shame, and my dishonour: mine adversaries are<\/i> all\nbefore thee.\u00a0 <\/span>20<\/sup>Reproach\nhath broken my heart; <\/u>and I am full of heaviness: and I looked for some<\/i>\nto take pity, but there was<\/i> none; and for comforters, but I found\nnone.\u00a0 <\/span>21<\/sup>They gave me also\ngall for my meat; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.\u00a0 <\/span>22<\/sup>Let their table become a snare\nbefore them: and that which should have been<\/i> for their<\/i> welfare, let\nit become<\/i> a trap.\u00a0 <\/span>23<\/sup>Let\ntheir eyes be darkened, that they see not; and make their loins continually to\nshake.\u00a0 <\/span>24<\/sup>Pour out thine\nindignation upon them, and let thy wrathful anger take hold of them.\u00a0 <\/span>25<\/sup>Let their habitation be\ndesolate; and<\/i> let none dwell in their tents.\u00a0 <\/span>26<\/sup>For they persecute him<\/i>\nwhom thou hast smitten; and they talk to the grief of those whom thou hast\nwounded.<\/u>\u00a0 <\/span>27<\/sup>Add iniquity\nunto their iniquity: and let them not come into thy righteousness.\u00a0 <\/span>28<\/sup>Let them be blotted out of the\nbook of the living, and not be written with the righteous.\u00a0 <\/span>29<\/sup>But I am<\/i> poor and\nsorrowful: let thy salvation, O God, set me up on high.\u00a0 <\/span>30<\/sup>I will praise the name of God\nwith a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving.\u00a0 <\/span>31<\/sup>This<\/i> also shall please\nthe LORD better than an ox or<\/i> bullock that hath horns and hoofs.\u00a0 <\/span>32<\/sup>The humble shall see this,\nand<\/i> be glad: and your heart shall live that seek God.\u00a0 <\/span>33<\/sup>For the LORD heareth the poor,\nand despiseth not his prisoners.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And once more we see David in these distressed\ncircumstances \u2013 and again we see how he deals with them.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Psalm 109:17-31<\/span><\/u>:\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>17<\/span><\/sup>As he loved cursing, so let it come unto him: as he delighted\nnot in blessing, so let it be far from him.\u00a0\n<\/span>18<\/sup>As he clothed himself with cursing like as with his\ngarment, so let it come into his bowels like water, and like oil into his\nbones.\u00a0 <\/span>19<\/sup>Let it be unto him\nas the garment which<\/i> covereth him, and for a girdle wherewith he is\ngirded continually.\u00a0 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

20<\/span><\/sup>Let<\/span><\/i> this be<\/i> the reward\nof mine adversaries from the LORD, and of them that speak evil against my\nsoul<\/u>.\u00a0 <\/span>21<\/sup>But do thou for\nme, O GOD the Lord, for thy name\u2019s sake: because thy mercy is<\/i> good,\ndeliver thou me.\u00a0 <\/span>22<\/sup>For I am<\/i>\npoor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me<\/u>.\u00a0 <\/span>23<\/sup>I am gone like the shadow when\nit declineth: I am tossed up and down as the locust.\u00a0 <\/span>24<\/sup>My knees are weak through\nfasting; and my flesh faileth of fatness.\u00a0\n<\/span>25<\/sup>I became also a reproach unto them: when<\/i> they looked\nupon me they shaked their heads.\u00a0 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

26<\/span><\/sup>Help me, O LORD my God: O save me according to thy mercy:\u00a0 <\/span>27\u00a0 <\/span><\/sup>That\nthey may know that this is<\/i> thy hand; that<\/i> thou, LORD, hast done\nit.\u00a0 <\/span>28<\/sup>Let them curse, but\nbless thou: when they arise, let them be ashamed; but let thy servant\nrejoice.\u00a0 <\/span>29<\/sup>Let mine\nadversaries be clothed with shame, and let them cover themselves with their own\nconfusion, as with a mantle.\u00a0 <\/span>30<\/sup>I\nwill greatly praise the LORD with my mouth; yea, I will praise him among the\nmultitude.\u00a0 <\/span>31<\/sup>For he shall\nstand at the right hand of the poor, to save him<\/i> from those that condemn\nhis soul.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

You\u2019ll\nnotice that in each of these Psalms where David refers to the wounded soul that\nthe wounding comes by evil speaking, by cursing, by the witchcraft of men and\nwomen who seek to belittle, downgrade and\/or destroy through their imprecations.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Notice,\ntoo, all of the symptoms one exhibits who has been wounded in this way.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>The Fear of Death becomes a\ndominant factor in their lives.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>They become enveloped in thoughts\nand worries of conspiracies against them.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Shame, reproach and dishonor\nbecome issues that continually haunt them \u2013 whether consciously or\nunconsciously.\u00a0 <\/span>One only has to speak a\nword which they hear through their wounding and they experience shame, they\nfeel put down and\/or they receive the criticisms and accusations as dishonor.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>David speaks of \u201creproach\u201d using\nthe Hebrew word<\/span>, <\/span>\u00e4t\u00c8\u00f8Š\u00e7–\n<\/span>cherpa\u00f2h<\/span>: to be exposed, to strip away one\u2019s character or deeds\nand to defame<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Thus, the concept of \u201creproach\u201d in this\ninstance is to feel as though your character has been impugned, or your deeds\njust don\u2019t measure up to those perceived as the accuser.<\/span><\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

5.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>In the 69th<\/sup> Psalm David is really prophesying of\nJesus, His trial, the beatings, the accusations, and the crucifixion.\u00a0 <\/span>At the same time, describes the conditions\nthat prevail among those who\u2019ve been wounded, and he describes the state of\nheaviness that accompanies this wounding.\u00a0\n<\/span>This is the same heaviness that Isaiah prophesied would be lifted by\nputting on \u201cthe garment of praise.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

6.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>In the same breath David describes those whose souls have been\nwounded as having \u201ca broken heart.\u201d\u00a0\n<\/span>Again, we refer back to Isaiah\u2019s prophecy in which he declares that \u201cthe\nSpirit of the Lord God is upon me because the Lord hath anointed me\u2026.to bind up\nthe broken hearted.\u201d <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

7.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>In the 109th<\/sup> Psalm, David refers to himself as \u201cpoor\nand needy\u201d (The Hebrew phraseology here is the same as that which occurs in\nIsaiah 61 when he prophesies that the anointing is \u201cto preach good tidings unto\nthe meek.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

8.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>In this same Psalm we see those with wounded hearts and spirits\nas having frailness in their bodies (vs. 24).<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

9.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>When he says (vs. 23), \u201cI am tossed up and down as the locust\u201d\nhe is referring to the same double-mindedness to which James refers in his\nepistle (James 1:6-8) \u2013 an instability that marks his life and lifestyle.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Proverbs 7 describes a situation in which a man becomes\nwounded in his spirit by virtue of being sucked in and enticed by a woman whose\nonly objective is to take advantage of him and use him to satisfy the desires\nof her flesh \u2013 and then dump him.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The picture of the wounded spirit and the enormity of its\neffect upon a person is described graphically in Proverbs 18:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Proverbs 18:14<\/span><\/u>:\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>14<\/span><\/sup>The spirit of a man will sustain (<\/span>\u00ecek <\/span>ku\u00f2l<\/span>: <\/span>to keep in, to maintain or\nto hold steady<\/span>) his infirmity (<\/span>\u00e4\u00ec\u00c8\u00e7’\u00ee \u00c7<\/span>macha\u00f5la\u00f2h<\/span>:\ndisease, sickness<\/span>)<\/span>; but a wounded (<\/span>\u00e0\u00eb\u00c8\u00f0ˆ<\/span> na\u00f2ka\u00f2\u0081<\/span>:\n<\/span>broken, stricken, driven<\/span>) spirit\nwho can bear?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Consider now\nanother one of Isaiah\u2019s prophecies concerning Jesus.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Isaiah 53:4-5<\/span><\/u>:\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>4<\/span><\/sup>Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we\ndid esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. 5<\/sup>But he was<\/i>\nwounded for our transgressions, he was<\/i> bruised for our iniquities: the\nchastisement of our peace was<\/i> upon him; and with his stripes we are\nhealed.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

This\nis the same \u201cwounding\u201d that appears in Isaiah 53:5<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Take\nanother look at these verses in an amplified translation:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Isaiah\n53:4-5 (RAC Translation & Amplification)<\/span><\/u>:\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>4<\/span><\/sup>Surely He has suffered and accepted as His own our maladies, our\nanxieties, our calamities, our disease and sicknesses, and carried our anguish,\npain and grief: yet we fabricated and maliciously invented His being stricken\nviolently, beaten, punished, wounded and slaughtered as if by God -- choosing to believe\nthat God browbeat, demeaned and looked down upon Him<\/span>. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

5<\/span><\/sup> <\/span><\/b>But He was broken and profaned for\nour rebellion, our revolt, our apostasy and our [religious] quarrel against\nGod; He was crushed, oppressed and smitten, and (emotionally) broken into\npieces for our perversity, our evil, our mischief, sins and faults; the\nbreaking and ridiculing of our peace, our welfare, our prosperity, our health\nand our safety was upon Him; and with His bloodied and blue wounds we are\ncured, mended, repaired and made thoroughly whole.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n
