Healing for the Soul & Spirit, Part 4<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

When the Holy Spirit launched us\ninto this area of study some weeks back, I freely admit that I had no idea of\nthe ramifications and the depth of revelation to which we would be taken.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

Although I am sharing from a place\nof current and still unfolding revelation, it is obvious that Della and I are\nboth recipients of some pretty amazing areas of healing where we had no\nprevious awareness of demonic footholds and opportunities for the Enemy to afflict\nus.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

Jesus began His\nministry by reading from the Isaiah Scroll in order to reveal the priorities He\nwould follow for restoring people to a proper relationship with Father.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Isaiah\n61:1-3<\/span><\/u>:\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>1<\/span><\/sup>The\nSpirit of the Lord GOD is<\/i> upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to\npreach good tidings unto the meek (<\/span>\u00e5\u00e9\u00f0ˆ\u00f2\u00c8<\/span> -<\/span>€a\u00f2na\u00f2yv<\/span><\/b>:<\/span>depressed in mind and circumstances, humble, lowly, poor<\/span>);\nhe hath sent me to bind up (<\/span>L\u00e1—\u00e7˜ -<\/span> <\/span>cha\u00f2bash<\/span><\/b>:<\/span>to wrap fully, to heal<\/b>,\nto gather back together<\/span>)\u00a0 <\/span>the brokenhearted (<\/span>\u00f8\u00e1—L\u00dc -<\/span> <\/span>sha\u00f2bar<\/span><\/b>:<\/span>crushed, broken in pieces, torn apart<\/span>\n-- + -- <\/span>\u00e1\u00ec\u00c5 -<\/span> <\/span>le\u00f2b<\/span><\/b>:[<\/span>the heart, metaphorically] feelings, the emotions, the will or\nintellect<\/span>), to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the\nprison to them that are<\/i> bound; 2<\/sup>To proclaim the acceptable\nyear of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our\u00a0 <\/span>God; to comfort (<\/span>\u00ed\u00e7—\u00f0ˆ - <\/span>na\u00f2cham<\/span><\/b>:<\/span>to breathe strongly upon, to ease<\/span>) all that mourn; 3<\/sup>To\nappoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the\noil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness;\nthat they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD,\nthat he might be glorified.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Notice the sequence of\nJesus\u2019 priorities once He\u2019s been anointed:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/b>To preach the good news that those in poverty no longer\nneed live that way;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/b>To heal wounded, shattered, splintered and fragmented\nsouls;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/b>To publish and declare liberty and freedom for those held\nin demonic bondage;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/b>To open the doors of mental, emotional, and spiritual\nprisons; to untie the cords that hold people captive.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nhealing that Jesus provides begins with the revelation of how the Enemy has\ngained his footholds in our souls, our minds and our emotions.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

There\nis a rather dramatic picture in Mark Chapter 5 that most of our English\ntranslations obscure.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Mark\n5:1-17<\/span><\/u>:\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>1<\/span><\/sup>And\nthey came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the\nGadarenes. 2<\/sup>And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man\nwith an unclean spirit<\/u><\/b>, 3<\/sup>Who\nhad his<\/i> dwelling(*) among the tombs<\/u><\/b>; and no man could bind him,\nno, not with chains: 4<\/sup>Because that he had been often bound with\nfetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the\nfetters broken in pieces: neither could any man<\/i> tame him. 5<\/sup>And always, night and day, he was in the\nmountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones<\/u><\/b>. 6<\/sup>But\nwhen he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him, 7<\/sup>And cried\nwith a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou<\/i>\nSon of the Most High God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not. 8<\/sup>For\nhe said unto him, Come out of the man, thou<\/i> unclean spirit.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/span>9<\/sup>And he asked\nhim, What is<\/i> thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is<\/i>\nLegion: for we are many. 10<\/sup>And he besought him much that he would\nnot send them away out of the country. 11<\/sup>Now there was there nigh\nunto the mountains a great herd of swine feeding. 12<\/sup>And all the\ndevils besought him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into\nthem. 13<\/sup>And forthwith Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits\nwent out, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep\nplace into the sea, (they were about two thousand;) and were choked in the sea.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

14<\/span><\/sup>And they that fed the swine fled, and told it<\/i> in the\ncity, and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that was done. 15<\/sup>And\nthey come to Jesus, and see him that was possessed with the devil, and had the\nlegion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid. 16<\/sup>And\nthey that saw it<\/i> told them how it befell to him that was possessed with\nthe devil, and also<\/i> concerning the swine. 17<\/sup>And they began to\npray him to depart out of their coasts.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Both\nMatthew and Luke record this event as well (See Matthew 8:28 and Luke\n8:26).\u00a0 <\/span>Three times in the passage from\nMark\u2019s Gospel we are told that this man had his dwelling among \u201cthe tombs.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In\nall the years and many dozens of times I\u2019ve read these Scripture passages, I\u2019d\nnever actually read this in the Greek text \u2013 which is revelatory to say the\nleast \u2013 until Della and I heard Katy Souza share in one of her teachings.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Each\ntime the word \u201ctomb\u201d occurs the Greek word is:<\/span>\n\u00ec\u00ed\u00e7\u00ec\u00e5s\u00ef\u00ed -<\/span>\nmnemion<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0 <\/span>This word may not strike an immediate chord\nfor some folks, but we have a word in the English language which is a direct\nderivative of the Greek: mnemonics<\/i>.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Webster\u2019s\nUnabridged Dictionary defines mnemonics<\/i>\nlike this: The science or art of improving the\nmemory, as by the use of certain formulas; aids to help in remembering<\/span>.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nGreek word, mnemion<\/span><\/i>,\nis drawn from Greek mythology and comes from the name of the goddess Mnemosyne\n\u2013 the mythological mother of Zeus, and the deity (actually, demonic entity) who\ncaused people to retain memories of past events.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Mnemion<\/span><\/i>, therefore, literally\nmeans: a remembrance; a monument or marker which\ncauses a recall of the past<\/span>.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

J.H.\nThayer, in his Greek-English Lexicon, adds: a\nvisible monument to the past, a visible marker for preserving a memorial of a\nperson, a thing, or some past event<\/span>.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

By\nnow, it should become obvious why the Gadarene demoniac was so tormented.\u00a0 <\/span>He literally re-lived his past failures, the\nbetrayals of his past, events which had traumatized his thoughts, his feelings\nand his emotions.\u00a0 <\/span>He lived every day\nbeing reminded of how he had been either mistreated, sexually abused (the word\n\u201cunclean\u201d in the Greek text implies this directly) or belittled \u2013 and he was\ntormented by spirits of fear which literally drove him insane.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

One\nitem worth noting before we continue is the word \u201cdwelling\u201d in verse 2 of Mark\n5.\u00a0 <\/span>This word in the Greek text is: <\/span>\u00ea\u00e1\u00f4\u00ef\u00df\u00ea\u00e7\u00f3\u00e9\u00f2 - <\/span>katoikesis<\/span><\/i>: mansion, place of residence, to reside permanently.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nman of Gadara, therefore, lived and dwelled permanently in the torment of past\nmemories.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

When\nhe came and threw himself at Jesus\u2019 feet, it was not the man who spoke or cried\nout.\u00a0 <\/span>Rather it was the \u201cunclean\nspirit.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>That spirit said a couple of\nthings that are remarkable for what is said, and what is NOT said, <\/span>\u201cWhat have I to\ndo with thee, Jesus, thou<\/i> Son of the Most High God? I adjure thee by\nGod, that thou torment me not.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Matthew\nnotes the following question, <\/span>\u201cart thou come hither to torment us before the\ntime?\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nfirst question<\/span><\/u>\nshould be phrased more properly, \u201cWhat do you and I have in common?\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Jesus\nhad NOTHING in common with either the man of Gadara, or the evil spirits that\nhad taken hold of him.\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus had no\nplace of wounding, no place of offense, no place of personal hurt by which evil\nspirits could gain a foothold in his mind, his thoughts, his emotions or his\nspirit.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

There\nwas no place in Jesus that needed healing or restoration.\u00a0 <\/span>There was no place in Him where evil spirits\nhad any kind of foothold.\u00a0 <\/span>He was ready\ninstead to minister healing and deliverance.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nsecond question<\/span><\/u>\nput to Jesus by the demons was revelatory: \u201cHave you come to torment us before\nthe appointed time?\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Understand?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nevil spirits KNOW with a certainty that there is a day of eternal judgment,\ndamnation and hell fire that awaits them.\u00a0\n<\/span>They know a day awaits when they will be bound and cast into \u201cThe Pit.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Those spirits also knew that Jesus had\nabsolute authority from Father Himself \u2013 that He could command them to go into\nthe bottomless pit before that appointed time \u2013 and they were fearful that\nJesus would do just that!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

When\nJesus spoke to \u201cthe unclean spirit\u201d He asked the question, \u201cWhat is your name?\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Once\nagain we have an answer which reveals the nature of the demonic torment this\nman of Gadara suffered.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u201cMy\nname is Legion, for we are many.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Do\nyou see it?\u00a0 <\/span>The \u201cspokesdemon\u201d for the\ngroup uses a specific Roman military term, thus identifying the fact that these\nevil spirits had declared war on this man \u2013 as well as all those others around\nhim \u2013 (and we\u2019ll cover this more momentarily) using a military strategy.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In\ncase you\u2019ve never been exposed to this terminology, a Roman Legion consisted of\n6,600 foot-soldiers and 172 horse-drawn charioteers with precision bowmen ready\nto use their weapons.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Some\nfolks have speculated that the demon\u2019s answer was more metaphoric than anything\nand that it was figurative rather than precise; but I find very little \u2013 if any\n\u2013 Scripture chosen by the Holy Spirit that has not been given for any other\npurpose than to draw some very precise and graphic pictures for the sake of our\nunderstanding and revelation.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Once\nyou begin to see this overall picture from a spiritual perspective, you realize\nthat evil spirits look for every opportunity to work in the lives of people in\nmuch the same way as Franco\u2019s \u201cFifth Column.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

During\nthe early days preceding WWII, Spanish General Francisco Franco was recognized\nas the head of Nationalist Spain by the Nazi regime.\u00a0 <\/span>During the next three years he led a revolt\nagainst the Popular Front in Spain and set out to capture Madrid.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

One\nof Hitler\u2019s military aides was sent to question him concerning his plans to\ntake the city.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u201cWell,\nI have four columns of Infantry \u2013 one on the north, one on the south, one on\nthe east and one on the west.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u201cAnd\nwhich one will you use to take the city,\u201d came the query.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u201cI\nwill use my Fifth Column,\u201d he responded.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u201cYour\nFifth Column?\u00a0 <\/span>Where is that?\u201d Hitler\u2019s\naide asked.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u201cThey\nare in the city already.\u00a0 <\/span>They are\ndressed and appear as ordinary Spanish citizens who go about their day just\nlike everyone else.\u00a0 <\/span>They run businesses,\nthey serve in public positions, they teach in the schools, and they are\nmusicians on the street. But they are loyal to me,\u201d Franco continued.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cWhen I give the word, they will rise up all\nat the same time and take over.\u00a0 <\/span>The city\nwill fall with very little bloodshed.\u00a0 <\/span>It\nwill be mine.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And\nthat is precisely how Francisco Franco took control of Spain in April of 1939:\nits cities and its government fell because of the infiltration of \u201cthe Fifth\nColumn.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nman of Gadara fell to the Fifth Column of evil spirits who took advantage of\nthe fact that he continued to nurse his wounds of the past.\u00a0 <\/span>He lived perpetually amongst the reminders of\nhis wounds.\u00a0 <\/span>He rehearsed daily the\nfailures or mistakes of past months and years.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

One\nby one this Fifth Column of demons began to take advantage of each wound, each\nhurt, each offense, each event in which he had been taken advantage of, and\neach place of belittlement.\u00a0 <\/span>Over a\nperiod of time, because the man was unaware of the tactics and oblivious to the\nencroachment of the Enemy, he was taken over and tormented in increasing ways.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Anger\nand hatred filled his being.\u00a0 <\/span>Rage became\nhis mantra.\u00a0 <\/span>Vengeance against his past\npersecutors or offenders became a driving force.\u00a0 <\/span>The local magistrates and officials tried to\ncapture him and hold him in chains to no avail.\u00a0\n<\/span>Every restraint they put upon him was broken in such demonic displays of\npower and might that the whole countryside was put in fear.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

When\nJesus commanded the Legion of evil spirits to come out of the man, they had no\nchoice but to obey.\u00a0 <\/span>They requested that\nthey be allowed to enter the herds of swine feeding nearby \u2013 just so they could\nhave physical bodies to dwell in.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We\nall know the end of that episode.\u00a0 <\/span>The\nswine couldn\u2019t handle the presence of the <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

demons\nand ran, panic-driven, over the cliff and right into the sea.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nman of Gadara was set free completely.\u00a0\n<\/span>Jesus healed him of his past wounds and set him free from the Legion of\nevil spirits.\u00a0 <\/span>Not only was the man set\nfree from the demons, the footholds they had in him were eradicated.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

There\nis a history lesson in this story as well as a wonderful picture of the healing\nof wounded souls.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Gadara\nwas located in a territory referred to as \u201cthe land of the Gergesenes.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nGergesenes derived their name from their ancient father, Gerges, whom we know\nhistorically as one of the sons of Canaan.\u00a0\n<\/span>During the days of the Patriarchs \u2013 and more specifically, the days of\nMoses and Joshua, they were referred to among the seven condemned nations as\nthe Girgashites.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

They\nwere the only nation of people who did not stand and fight against Israel.\u00a0 <\/span>Almost to a man, they fled before Israel and\nsettled down for centuries among the Assyrians and the Ammonites (modern-day\nJordanians and Iraqis).<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Most\nof their national identity was lost and they intermarried with those among whom\nthey dwelled, but the cowardly, non-confrontational spirit that epitomized the\nGirgashites remained.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nman from Gadara was easily taken by the Legion of evil spirits because there\nwas no place of resistance to or against the thoughts and memories he could\nhave avoided.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

This\nis a classic lesson for all of us.\u00a0 <\/span>The\napostle Paul wrote the Corinthian Ekklesia and said something that is critical\nin our understanding:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

II\nCorinthians 10:3-5<\/span><\/u>:\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>3<\/span><\/sup>For though we walk in the flesh,\nwe do not war after the flesh: 4<\/sup>(For the weapons of our warfare are<\/i>\nnot carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) 5<\/sup>Casting\ndown imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the\nknowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of\nChrist;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n
