the example of\nCovenant in Abraham\u2019s life \u2013 the very first real picture in detail of what\nCovenant means from God\u2019s perspective \u2013<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\n<\/span>but I felt like I needed to deviate a bit today and talk about a\ndifferent aspect of Covenant where most of us have had little\nunderstanding.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019m talking about the\nCovenant of Marriage.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:3.0pt;line-height:normal'><b><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";color:#984806;\nmso-themecolor:accent6;mso-themeshade:128'><o:p>\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:3.0pt;line-height:normal'><b><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";color:#984806;\nmso-themecolor:accent6;mso-themeshade:128'>The whole picture of Marriage has\nbeen so corrupted in modern society such that many people have become jaded to\nthe idea.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>The understanding of what\nMarriage really represents in God\u2019s eyes is rarely taught.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>People get married for all the wrong\nreasons.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Let\u2019s see if we can unfold this\nconcept today.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:3.0pt;line-height:normal'><b><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";color:#984806;\nmso-themecolor:accent6;mso-themeshade:128'><o:p>\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>We have talked in time past about the three dimensions\nof love, <\/span><span class=SpellE><b style='mso-bidi-font-weight:normal'><i\nstyle='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:\n115%;font-family:\"Garamond\",\"serif\";color:#002060'>agap\u00e9<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span><b\nstyle='mso-bidi-font-weight:normal'><i style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Garamond\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#002060'>, <span class=SpellE>phileo<\/span><\/span><\/i><\/b><b\nstyle='mso-bidi-font-weight:normal'><i style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>.<\/span><\/i><\/b><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Today, by the grace of God, I will share with\nyou \u2013 carefully, I hope \u2013 just how critical our marriage choices are, how and\nwhy God approves and ordains some marriages, and how and why He rejects others.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Our society today has a warped understanding of\nmarriage.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>One of the tragedies of the\nmodern churches is that they gladly teach about divorce, how God hates divorce,\nand all the tribulations we get ourselves into when we used divorce as a\nsolution to marriage problems.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Pastors\nand church leaders are quick to teach that \u201call divorce is wrong,\u201d yet they\nfail to teach what marriage really is, and what God approves.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s important to understand how God views\nmarriage in the first place, and just why He hates divorce.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Marriage is a covenant.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\n<\/span>It is (supposed to be) a solemn vow between equals.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>The Greek text of the New Testament uses the\nword, <\/span><span class=SpellE><b style='mso-bidi-font-weight:normal'><i\nstyle='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:\n115%;font-family:\"Garamond\",\"serif\";color:#002060'>suzeugnumi<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span><b\nstyle='mso-bidi-font-weight:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:\n115%;font-family:\"Garamond\",\"serif\";color:#002060'>,<\/span><\/b><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>\nmeaning: to conjoin, to yoke together.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Part of the common marriage vow is stated, \u201cin the\ncompany of God and these witnesses.\u201d<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\n<\/span>Thus, by making a marriage covenant \u201cin the company of God,\u201d we seek to\nadd His blessing, His approval, and His glue to our \u201cconjoining.\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Question.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Do we\nadd His blessing, His approval or His glue to our covenant?<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>The answer is not so simple as some would like to\nbelieve.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Much of the time, I believe the\nanswer is a resounding, Yes!<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Some of the\ntime, however, it is an abrupt, No!<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Let me explain.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>As God began to unfold His covenant with His people,\nIsrael, He gave them specific orders about whom they could marry and not\nmarry.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>A pattern was established for\nIsrael.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>They were to be God\u2019s chosen\npeople, His representatives in the earth.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\n<\/span>They were to illustrate a marriage covenant He would make with\nthem.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>He would be their husband.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>They would be His bride.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>As the years and centuries passed, Israel began to\nworship other gods.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Despite their\nharlotry, God continued to woo them and express His love to them in ways that\ntranscend human understanding.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>The day\ncame, however, when Israel had totally abandoned God.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>And God divorced Israel.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>To use the Hebraism, He \u201cput Israel away.\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Both Isaiah and Jeremiah cried out to Israel.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Jeremiah\u2019s lament was, <\/span><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Bernard MT Condensed\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#C00000;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold;mso-bidi-font-style:italic'>\u201cAnd I saw,\nwhen for all the causes whereby backsliding Israel committed adultery, I had put\nher away, and given her a bill of divorce; yet her treacherous sister Judah\nfeared not, but went and played the harlot also.\u201d<\/span><b style='mso-bidi-font-weight:\nnormal'><i style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;\nline-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";color:green'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Isaiah prophesied to Judah, <\/span><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Bernard MT Condensed\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#C00000;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold;mso-bidi-font-style:italic'>\u201cThus <span\nclass=SpellE>saith<\/span> the LORD, Where is the bill of your mother\u2019s\ndivorcement, whom I have put away? or which of my creditors is it to whom I\nhave sold you? Behold, for your iniquities have ye sold yourselves, and for\nyour transgressions is your mother put away.\u201d<\/span><b style='mso-bidi-font-weight:\nnormal'><i style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;\nline-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";color:green'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>It was clear that Israel had been given a \u201cbill of\ndivorcement\u201d by the Lord.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Yet He hated\ndivorce. <span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0<\/span>Why?<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Because He was forced to divorce a people who\nhad been the object of His love, His affection, His blessing.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>He didn\u2019t want the divorce.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>He wanted the union \u2013 the marriage \u2013 to\nflourish in the earth.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>So He sent Hosea, the prophet, to live out in their\nmidst the picture of a man who goes and chooses a woman to become his\nwife.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>By Law, Hosea could not marry the\nwoman because she was a whore.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Yet, God\ndirected Hosea to marry her in order to show His people, Israel, that He yet\nwanted Israel to return to Him, and that He would marry Israel in spite of the\ndivorce she had been given.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>What happened?<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\n<\/span>Hosea\u2019s wife did exactly what Israel had done.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>She cheated on Hosea, ultimately going and\nliving with another man.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Hosea went and\nretrieved her \u2013 at God\u2019s direction \u2013 and brought her back as his wife with\ncomplete forgiveness.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>It was a prophetic\nillustration to Israel that God would take Israel back also.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Yet Israel ignored the picture and the\nmessage of the prophet.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>When Nehemiah and Ezra returned to Jerusalem during\nIsrael\u2019s captivity to rebuild the walls of the city, and to restore the Temple,\nthey found that the priests and Levites had married women whom God had\nspecifically forbidden them to marry.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\n<\/span>Chapter 10 of Ezra recounts how Ezra commanded the priests and Levites\nto divorce the women they had married.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\n<\/span>It also recounts the sorrow and weeping that accompanied their\nobedience.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>The consequences of their disobedience and marrying\nwomen whom God had forbidden them to marry, cost them emotionally, spiritually,\nand relationally (on a human level).<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>The\npriests had covenanted with these women.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\n<\/span>They had married them.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>They even\nhad families.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>But God did not recognize\nthose marriages.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Thus, their covenants\nwere null and void.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>The pain and suffering wrought by those covenants was\nalmost incomprehensible.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>No doubt, the\npriests loved their wives.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>They had\nenjoyed a <\/span><span class=SpellE><b style='mso-bidi-font-weight:normal'><i\nstyle='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:\n115%;font-family:\"Garamond\",\"serif\";color:#002060'>phileo<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>\nrelationship with them.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>But the <b\nstyle='mso-bidi-font-weight:normal'><i style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'><span\nstyle='color:#002060'>agape<\/span><\/i><\/b> relationship with God was\nmissing.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>The priests had been called by\nGod.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>They had been chosen by Him to\nserve as His representatives, his mediators with His people.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>The priests contaminated the process by making marriage\ncovenants with women to whom God had said, \u201cNo.\u201d<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>He wasn\u2019t going to suddenly change His mind\nand put his stamp of approval on these marriages because they (the priests)\nwere His chosen and called representatives.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>When I faced the same situation, and the Lord clearly\nspoke to me and said, \u201cI will not approve what I have said, No, to,\u201d it scared\nthe living daylights out of me.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>The\nthought of the pain that would arise from a divorce was hard for me to\nconceive.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>I still dragged my feet for\nanother two years and meanwhile, my wife left me for the third time.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>I argued with the Lord.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\n<\/span>I quoted Matthew 5:31 to Him.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>His\nresponse was, \u201cYou are the one living in fornication.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Don\u2019t point your fingers at your wife.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>You are living with someone I specifically\nforbid you to marry.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>You have been\ncheating on me.\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>The grief I felt in my soul knew no boundaries.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>When I heard those words from the Lord, I\nwept.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>The weeping and grieving within\nwent on for months.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>I loved the Lord\nwith my entire being.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>My whole existence\nwas for His pleasure.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>The dawning and\nrealization that I had displeased Him and was living in sin in a marriage He\nnot only didn\u2019t approve of but had forbidden ate at my innards in ways I can\u2019t\neven begin to describe.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>God\u2019s divorce from Israel was grievous to him.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>The priests\u2019 divorce from their wives caused\npain to them and their ex-spouses in ways hard to describe.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>The grief and self-recrimination I went\nthrough during my unfolding divorce affected me so deeply that it ultimately\ncaused me to suffer a massive heart attack and drop dead.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>\u201cTill death do you part\u201d took on a whole new\nperspective to me.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Looking back, I\nrealize that it was the grace of God that permitted the heart attack.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>I had made my vows to my first wife in good\nconscience \u2013 despite the fact that God had not approved the marriage.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Had death not occurred, those vows would have\nhaunted me continuously.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>The fact that I\nwas raised back to life gave impetus and understanding to a new marriage and a\ncovenant ordered by God.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Lots of things happened surrounding that death and\nresurrection that I don\u2019t have time to go into today.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>I was dead for some 15 minutes before the\nLord brought me back.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>It was my new\nwife, Della, who spoke life back into me.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\n<\/span>It was God\u2019s covenant with her, and with me.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>The Lord had given me to her, and her to me\n(and that was going on 37 years ago!)<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>As Della and I repeated our vows to each other in\nmarriage, we realized that the Lord was doing something absolutely\nsovereign.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>What we experienced\ntranscended anything we had ever known.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\n<\/span>For the first time in my life, I began to understand covenant.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>The body of Christ has sadly lacked in teaching and\nunderstanding concerning marriage, and the covenant that God seeks to establish\nin marriage.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Marriage was designed by\nGod to illustrate His union, His joining, His covenant with a holy people set\napart unto Him.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>We have cheapened\nmarriage into a contract between equals with provisions for the severing of\nthat contract with one party to the contract violates it in some way.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>The Lord Jesus Christ seeks a union with a people to\nwhom He makes unconditional promises.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>He\ncovenants with us to perform His word.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\n<\/span>What is required of us is that we walk with Him, that we love Him, that\nwe keep His commandments.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>He is merciful\nand quick to forgive our transgressions when we repent and turn from those\ntransgressions, and He continues to keep His covenant with us despite our\nviolations.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Marriage has been designed in such a way that God has\ninstilled within us a search for the one who is our counterpart, our other\nself.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>(I refer you back to a Coffee\nBreak I did on Metaphors.)<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>He has\ndesigned us in such a way that we are completed when we are joined to the one\nwhom He has chosen.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Once we are\ncompleted, the search ends.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>We no longer\nhave a need to look at or for someone else as a prospective mate.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Society has so contaminated this that we pick and\nchoose mates according to the delights of our eyes, the emotions of the moment,\nor the needs that exist at that time in our lives.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>We don\u2019t wait for the Lord to bring us to our\ncounterpart or bring our counterpart to us \u2013 in His time!<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Then, when things go wrong, and we realize\nthat we\u2019ve really blown it, we call out to the Lord to \u201cfix it.\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>I never cease to be amazed at the grace of the Lord to\n\u201cfix\u201d broken relationships and to join folks together in His covenant \u2013 after\nthe fact.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>But why do we do it\nbackwards?<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Why can\u2019t we be patient?<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Why can\u2019t we wait for the Lord to choose for\nus?<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Why do we jump into marriages of our\nchoosing, and then expect God to put His stamp of approval just because we say\nthat we do this \u201cin the sight of God and this company?\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>The answer is simple.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\n<\/span>Sin.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Sin corrupts the whole\nmarriage covenant.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Sin corrupts the\nprocess of choosing.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Sin corrupts the\njoining.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Sin causes us to choose\nmarriage partners whom God has neither chosen nor approved.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Sin produces an environment in which we begin\nto look around for someone else who will complete us.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Sin prevents us from being completed.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Sin abrogates the marriage covenant, making\nit null and void.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Wow!<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Guess I got\na bit carried away, there.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019m trying to\ndraw you a picture of God\u2019s plan and purpose in marriage.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal><span class=SpellE><b style='mso-bidi-font-weight:normal'><i\nstyle='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:\n115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";color:#002060'>Agap\u00e9<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#002060'> <\/span><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;\nfont-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>is a love that should encompass\nmarriage.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>It is supposed to be part of\nthe picture \u2013 part of the whole package.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\n<\/span>When it is, something happens to that union that the whole world\nrecognizes.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>The presence of the Lord\naccompanies you.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>The presence of the\nLord fills the marriage.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>The authority\nof the Lord goes with you because you are in total agreement together \u2013 not\njust with each other, but with Him!<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\n<\/span>Whatever you speak in that place of agreement together carries with it\nthe force of God\u2019s creative power.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>You become a threat to Satan and his dominions.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>You become a force for Godly change in the\nearth.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>You become a force for\nrighteousness.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>These things have come to fruition for Della and me in\nthe past 36+ years.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>No matter where we\ngo, no matter what we do, no matter who sees us, the presence and authority of\nthe Lord is recognized.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>In those 36+ years, we have had Hell pitted against\nus.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>We have gone through persecution,\nopposition, public ridicule \u2013 you name it.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\n<\/span>Every experience has drawn us closer together.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Every experience has provided evidence of the\nglue the Lord provides when He ordains a marriage.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>During those same 36+ years, however, we have seen the\nblessings of the Lord in ways far too numerous to recount.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>We have seen the authority of the Lord\nworking with us.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>We have seen the power\nof God manifested on our behalf, and seen His love and grace extended through\nus to thousands of people.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>One of the pictures the apostle Paul drew in his\nfrequent metaphors was a picture of submission we rarely hear of.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Taken from a picture of a Roman household,\nthe word draws a picture of a family whose servants deeply love their\nmasters.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Though the word implies\n\u201cstepping aside,\u201d in the more traditional sense, it also carries with it \u201ctransparency.\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal><span class=SpellE><b style='mso-bidi-font-weight:normal'><i\nstyle='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:\n115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";color:#002060'>Agap\u00e9<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>\nbrings with it \u201ctransparency.\u201d<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>It brings\ninto a marriage a sense of stepping aside for the other.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>It brings what I would call \u201ccompetition,\u201d\nbut not competition in the framework of contests or games.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>It brings a desire to do for one another \u2013 to\nalmost compete in seeing who can do the most for each other.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Della and I have enjoyed this kind of competition with\neach other from time to time.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>There is\nnothing I wouldn\u2019t do for her.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>There is\nnothing she wouldn\u2019t do for me.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>In fact,\nwe often try to surprise one another with things the other doesn\u2019t expect.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>We have had some spectacular fun in trying to\noutdo one another in our expressions of love.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>When you begin to apply this concept to the\nrelationship between the Lord Jesus Christ and His chosen counterpart, His\nother self, you see a picture of a people who can (and ultimately will) change\nthe face of this earth.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>It is an aspect\nof covenant sadly lacking in today\u2019s world with many people, but it is an\naspect that God\u2019s people are beginning to come to grips with.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Covenant is not a word.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\n<\/span>It is not something you decide to do and then expect God to bless\nit.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Covenant is a way of life.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>It is a union and an agreement that\nincorporates the plan, the purposes and the choices of the Lord as they are\nintegrated into our plans, purposes and choices.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>With His prior approval and choosing, our\ncovenants can be, and often are, nullified.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Della and I have watched throughout the years as the\nLord has marvelously repaired and restored relationships that began without His\nprior approval.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>We have also watched in\nsome cases as the decisions of men and women have been nullified because the\nLord was not in their choices and covenants.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>We don\u2019t preach divorce.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>We preach covenant.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s a way of life.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>It is also an experience in the Lord that\noften defies
