Good Morning, Good\nMorning, Good Morning!<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

After weeks of making\nreference to this series which deals with the foundations of our nation, we're\nactually going to begin with it today.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

You will see, as this\nseries unfolds, that every single one of the 50 states in our union recognizes\nthat their existence, as a body politick, flows from God.\u00a0 <\/span>The rejection of this principle by modern\npoliticians is a huge contributing factor in the chaos which has unfolded since\nprayer was removed from public schools, and gradually from public discourse.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

The acceptance, and\neven injection, of such things as \u201cShariah Law\u201d in certain places is a\nviolation of our nation\u2019s foundations, not to mention the Constitution that our\nforefathers created, lived and died for.\u00a0\n<\/span>What our politicians have refused to recognize or understand is the fact\nthat Islam is not a religion: it is a political philosophy with world\ndomination at its underpinnings, using religion as an excuse for its philosophy.\u00a0 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

Let\u2019s not go there\ntoday.\u00a0 <\/span>Instead, let\u2019s get on with our\ndiscussion concerning America\u2019s foundations.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

From the\nearliest days of our nation's founding fathers, people came to these shores to\nescape religious persecution and to create an environment in which there would\nbe the freedom to worship God -- and quite specifically, the Lord Jesus Christ\n-- according to the dictates of each person's heart.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

No other\nnation on earth has such foundations.\u00a0 America, as a result, has prospered\nlike no other nation on earth.\u00a0 America has seen and experienced the\nblessings of the Lord in a dimension that has made it the envy of virtually\nevery nation on earth.\u00a0 It is in this nation that creativity has\nblossomed, inventions have sprung up and industry has taken hold creating an\neconomic backbone which provides the lowest rate of unemployment anywhere in\nthe world.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

There are\nreasons for this.\u00a0 And those reasons are the theme of this series: The\nAmerican Covenant.\u00a0 We've spent weeks discussing the meaning and significance\nof covenant, and how different our contemporary understanding of this word\nis.\u00a0 The whole concept of covenant has been pretty much lost in our modern\nsociety.\u00a0 We use the word loosely to apply to marriage without a real\nunderstanding of how deep it goes, and lawyers and legal experts today bandy\nthe word about, but with little reference as to the significance of covenant.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Quickly\nrestated, a covenant is a life and death agreement between two or more parties\nin which the parties give themselves wholly to the performance of that to which\nthey agree, with the pain of death as the consequence for failure.\u00a0 On the\nother hand, the blessing that comes with that covenant is its end\npurpose.\u00a0 The parties thereto committed themselves, their families and all\nof their resources to the fulfilling and achieving of the covenant ends.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

That said,\nwhen those early pilgrims made their decision to board the Mayflower and sail\nto an unknown land, they all knew they were taking their lives in their\nhands.\u00a0 The objective to have a land in which they could worship without\nthe persecution of the Anglican Church was an objective fraught with every\nconceivable danger.\u00a0 Yet to these would-be colonists, the ends more than\njustified the risks.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

If they\nsucceeded, they would have a place where they would be free to worship the Lord\nJesus Christ without someone looking over their shoulder and dictating their\ndoctrines, their methods of worship or anything else.\u00a0 Their relationship\nto the Lord, and their growth spiritually -- they felt -- hung in the\nbalance.\u00a0 102 people representing some 40 families with different church\nbackgrounds came together in 1620, boarding a boat, the Mayflower, more suited\nto a museum than being a seaworthy vessel.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

It came\nabout, therefore, that on November 11, 1620, upon landing on American shores,\n40 heads of families gathered together at Cape Cod and signed the following\ndocument:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

You'll\nnotice the phrase in which they say, \"[we] solemnly and mutually, in\nthe presence of God and one another, covenant and combine ourselves together\ninto a civil body politick...\"<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0 Think these folks\nunderstood the meaning of covenant?\u00a0 Better believe it!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Just a few\nyears later, an English church leader by the name of Roger Williams became\nlinked to the Puritan movement advocating separation from the episcopal form of\nhierarchical government and embracing instead the direct involvement of\ncongregations or bodies of believers in the choice of their leaders and those\ntenets of faith which they all agreed to.\u00a0 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nPuritan movement was deeply persecuted and hated by the traditional leadership\nof the Church of England, and by all those who advocated hierarchical church\ngovernment since their movement rendered hierarchical offices as both\nnon-Scriptural and non-essential to the body of Christ.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Although\nRoger Williams was a Calvinist by teaching and upbringing (and one of John\nCalvin's teachings held that the state was subject to the church) he migrated\nto the Massachusetts Colony in 1631, eleven years after the Mayflower colonists\nhad arrived, with the objective of finding a place where the persecuted\nPuritans could migrate and worship the Lord as they pleased.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

He soon\nran afoul of the Massachusetts Bay Colony leaders when he declared that they\nhad neither right nor authority to impose uniform faith and worship among the\ncolonists.\u00a0 He further denied the right of the Massachusetts General Court\nto punish religious infractions.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In 1634, just\nfour years after arriving on American shores, Roger Williams found himself\nbanished by the Massachusetts General Court and facing a deportation order back\nto England.\u00a0 He escaped and lived among the Narragansett Indians, learning\ntheir language, gaining their friendship and trust, and in 1636 purchasing a\nsizeable piece of land from them for the purpose of establishing both the city\nof Providence and the colony of Rhode Island.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Providence\ngained its name from Williams' declaration of thanksgiving to the Lord,\n\"for God's merciful providence unto me in my distress.\"\u00a0 Despite\nhis indoctrination and personal leanings as a leader in the body of Christ,\nRoger Williams had arrived at the conclusion that the government of the colony\nmust be established upon a foundation of tolerance for religious differences in\nthe way people worshiped the Lord God, and complete separation between civil\ngovernment and that of the various churches.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

This\npolicy enabled the Society of Friends (Quakers) to escape the bigotry that had\nsurrounded their existence in Massachusetts Bay Colony, along with the very\nfirst Baptists who made the fledgling Rhode Island Colony their home base in\nthe New World.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In 1639,\nRoger Williams was baptized by immersion and named pastor of the first Baptist\nchurch in America.\u00a0 Less than a year later, he chose to withdraw from his\nassociation with the Baptists, calling himself instead \"a Seeker\"\n(one who continues to seek after more truth in the Gospel) rather than allying\nhimself with a specific set of doctrines and tenets.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

What makes\nRoger Williams stand out in our nation's history and founding is the fact that\nhis 1651 charter of rights for Rhode Island became the basis for the first\nAmendment to the Constitution of the United States.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Thomas\nJefferson's famous (and horribly misused and applied by the FDR Supreme Court)\ncomment to the Danbury Baptist Association, \"I contemplate with\nsovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that\ntheir legislature should make no law respecting an establishment of religion,\nor prohibiting the free exercise thereof, thus building a wall of separation\nbetween Church & State<\/i><\/span><\/b>\" <\/i>was drawn from the model\nestablished by Roger Williams.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I guess I\nnever cease to be amazed at the number of Christians -- even in these\npolitically turbulent times -- whose ignorance of this nation's foundations and\nJesus' command (in the parable of the ten pounds or talents -- see Luke 19:13)\nto <\/span>\"Occupy till I come\"<\/span> <\/span>holds them captive\nto a doctrine of demons that says that Christians have no business in politics,\nor the affairs of government.<\/span><\/p>\n

Before I\ncontinue, let's take a look at that command from the Lord and see what He\nactually was saying.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

That word\n\"occupy\" comes from a translation of the Greek, <\/span>\u00f0\u00f1\u00e1\u00e3\u00ec\u00e1\u00f4\u00e5\u00fd\u00ef\u00ec\u00e1\u00e9<\/span><\/b><\/span> <\/span><\/b>pragmateuomai<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>: which is derived\nfrom<\/span> <\/span>\u00f0\u00f1O\u00e3\u00ec\u00e1<\/span><\/b><\/span> pragma<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/b>, <\/span>which in turn is\ndrawn from<\/span>\n<\/span>\u00f0\u00f1\u00dc\u00f3\u00f3\u00f9<\/span><\/b><\/span> <\/span><\/b>prasso<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Each\nof these words draws a picture.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

That root\nword, <\/span>prasso<\/span><\/i><\/b>,<\/span><\/b> <\/span>has\nseveral applications: to perform repeatedly, to execute and accomplish\n(business transactions); and more specifically, to collect (such as dues or\nfees), to exact or require (rules or order).<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Pragma<\/span><\/i><\/b>,<\/span><\/b> <\/span>therefore,\nrepresents the doing of business, conducting the affairs (of the people), being\ninvolved in material matters.\u00a0 Thayer's Greek Lexicon tells us that this\nword is often used throughout the NT in a forensic or legal sense, dealing with\nmatters of law.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

It's\nderivative, pragmateuomai<\/span><\/i><\/b>, (J. H. Thayer tells us) means literally to\ncarry on the business of trading and banking.\u00a0 No set of words better\nillustrates the picture of politics (Microsoft's Encarta tells us that this\nword means \"the processes by which people and institutions exercise or\nresist power.\")<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

[Sorry to\nget so technical with you in explaining the Greek, but we absolutely have to\nunderstand our responsibilities as believers when it comes to government.]<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Taken to\ntheir logical extension, it is impossible to separate matters of government\nfrom what Jesus commanded.\u00a0 Jesus wasn't simply instructing His followers\nto engage in trade with one another, He was instructing them to literally\nbecome the governing force in society, to be the bankers, the businessmen (and\nwomen), those who established the rules of society, those who established the\nrules by which society could function and engage in commerce.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

OCCUPY!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Next week,\nwe'll pick up from this point and in the days to come take a systematic look at\nthe progression of increasing religious liberty that ultimately became the\nbackbone by which our nation's Constitution was formed.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n
