As you will see (and continue\nto see) in the following documents, the term, \u201creligion\u201d did not mean,\nBuddhist, Muslim, Confucianism, or any of a host of other non-Jesus Christ\nhonoring beliefs.\u00a0 <\/span>For our early settlers\nand founding fathers, \u201creligion\u201d simply meant differing denominations or sects,\nbut all believing in the same fundamental tenets of Christianity.\u00a0 <\/span>They could differ on doctrines, but NOT on\nthe supremacy of the Lord Jesus Christ. <\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

Take a\nlook at what the younger John Winthrop wrote as he put together the charter for\nthe Connecticut Colony:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The Fundamental Orders of Connecticut<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n\n

January 14, 1639<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

For as much as it hath pleased Almighty God by the wise disposition of his\ndivine providence so to order and dispose of things that we the Inhabitants and\nResidents of Windsor, Hartford and Wethersfield are now cohabiting and dwelling\nin and upon the River of Connectecotte<\/span> and the lands\nthereunto adjoining; and well knowing where a people are gathered together the\nword of God requires that to maintain the peace and union of such a people\nthere should be an orderly and decent Government established according to God,\nto order and dispose of the affairs of the people at all seasons as occasion\nshall require; <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Do therefore associate and conjoin ourselves to be as one Public State or\nCommonwealth; and do for ourselves and our successors and such as shall be\nadjoined to us at any time hereafter, enter into Combination and Confederation\ntogether, to maintain and preserve the liberty and purity of the Gospel of our Lord\nJesus which we now profess, as also, the discipline of the Churches, which\naccording to the truth of the said Gospel is now practiced amongst us; as also\nin our civil affairs to be guided and governed according to such Laws, Rules,\nOrders and Decrees as shall be made, ordered, and decreed as followeth<\/span>: ...........\"<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Did you\nsee that?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\"[We] do therefore associate and conjoin ourselves to be as one\nPublic State or Commonwealth; and do for ourselves and our successors and\nsuch as shall be adjoined to us at any time hereafter<\/u>, enter into\nCombination and Confederation together, to maintain and preserve the liberty\nand purity of the Gospel of our Lord Jesus<\/u> which we now profess, as also,\nthe discipline of the Churches, which according to the truth of said Gospel\nis now practiced amongst us<\/u>; as also in our civil affairs to be guided\nand governed<\/u>...\"<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nyounger John Winthrop, son of the same John Winthrop that governed\nMassachusetts Bay Colony, took the spiritual heritage of his father and\nimplemented it in like manner for the Connecticut Colony.\u00a0 He was even\nmore specific in his wording than was his father.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Connecticut\nwas chartered <\/span>\"to maintain and\npreserve the liberty and purity of the Gospel of our Lord Jesus.\"\u00a0<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/b>Further, he uses\nthe Gospel, and its discipline to guide and govern all civil affairs.\"<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Separation\nof church and state?\u00a0 Yeahh<\/span>, Riiiiiigggghhhhtt<\/span>!\u00a0\nSeparation from denominational and doctrinal impositions that may divide\ndifferent groups of believers, sure, but NOT separation from the Gospel of Jesus\nChrist!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Sure puts\na different light on things, doesn't it?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Throughout\nthe years, I've heard a myth repeated more times than I can count: namely, that\nMaryland was founded for the purpose of establishing a base for Roman Catholics\nin this country, and that it gained its name specifically as \"Mary\nLand\" to honor Mary, the mother of Jesus.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In actual\nfact, there were a sizeable number of Roman Catholics who participated in the\nfounding of the colony, but the original charter -- granted in 1632 by Charles\nI to Cecil Calvert, Lord Baltimore -- actually provided the name of the\ncolony.\u00a0 It gained its name from Queen Henrietta Maria, wife of Charles I.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nsettlers and colonists, seeing the disagreements and arguments and even\npersecution of professing Christians by other professing Christians, resolved\nto bring the matter to William Stone, who was the governor of the colony.\u00a0\nIn 1649 he drew up the following document, titled:\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

An Act Concerning Religion<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(Note: I have corrected the spelling of the\narchaic English in order to make it more readable.)<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Forasmuch as in a well governed and Christian Commonwealth matters\nconcerning Religion and the honor of God ought in the first place to bee<\/span> taken, into serious consideration and endeavored to be\nsettled.\u00a0 <\/span>Be it therefore ordered and\nenacted by the Right Honorable Cecilius<\/span> Lord Baron of\nBaltimore, absolute Lord and Proprietary of this Province, with the advice and\nconsent of this General Assembly.\u00a0 <\/span>That\nwhatsoever person or persons within this Province and the Islands thereunto\nbelonging shall from henceforth blaspheme God, that is Curse him, or deny our Saviour<\/span> Jesus Christ to be the son of God, or shall deny\nthe holy Trinity, the Father, Son and Holy Ghost, or the Godhead of any of the\nsaid Three persons of the Trinity or the Unity of the Godhead, or shall use or\nutter any reproachful Speeches, words or language concerning the said Holy\nTrinity, or any of the said three persons thereof, shall be punished with death\nand confiscation or forfeiture of all his or her lands and goods to the Lord\nProprietary and his heirs,<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And be it also Enacted by the Authority and with the advice and assent\naforesaid.\u00a0 <\/span>That whatsoever person or\npersons shall from henceforth use or utter any reproachful words or Speeches\nconcerning the blessed Virgin Mary the Mother of our Saviour<\/span>\nor the holy Apostles or Evangelists or any of them shall in such case for the\nfirst offence forfeit to the said Lord Proprietary and his heirs Lords and Proprietaries<\/span> of this Province the sum of five pound\nSterling or the value thereof to be Levied on the goods and chattels of every\nsuch person so offending, but in case such Offender or Offenders, shall not\nthen have goods and chattels sufficient for the satisfying of such forfeiture,\nor that the same bee not otherwise speedily satisfied that then such Offender\nor Offenders shalbe<\/span> publicly whipped and be\nimprisoned during the pleasure of the Lord Proprietary or the Leivet<\/span> (Tax Collector, RAC<\/i>) of Chief Governor of\nthis Province for the time being.\u00a0 <\/span>And\nthat every such Offender or Offenders for every second offence shall forfeit\nten pound sterling or the value thereof to be levied as aforesaid, or in case\nsuch Offender or Offenders shall not then have goods and chattels within this\nProvince sufficient for that purpose then to bee<\/span>\npublicly and severely whipped and imprisoned as before is expressed.\u00a0 <\/span>And that every persons or persons before\nmentioned offending herein the third time, shall for such third Offence forfeit\nall his lands and Goods and be for ever<\/span> banished and\nexpelled out of this Province.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(The above paragraph contains the phrases\nwhich have led to the myth that Maryland was established to enforce\nCatholicism.\u00a0 <\/span>The following paragraph\nmakes clear that -- in fact -- this Act was written to prevent the persecution\nof ANYONE who named the name of Christ.)<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And be it also further Enacted by the same authority advise and assent\nthat whatsoever person or persons shall from henceforth upon any occasion of\nOffence or otherwise in a reproachful manner or Way declare call or denominate\nany person or persons whatsoever inhabiting,<\/a> residing,\ntrafficking, trading, or commercing<\/span> within this\nProvince or within any Ports, Harbors, Creeks or Havens to the same belonging\nan heretic, Schismatic, Idolator<\/span>, puritan,\nIndependent, Presbyterian, popish priest, Jesuit, Jesuited<\/span>\npapist, Lutheran, Calvinist, Anabaptist, Brownist<\/span>,\nAntinomian, Barrowist<\/span>, Roundhead, Separatist, or any\nother name or term in a reproachful manner relating to matter of Religion shall\nfor every such Offence forfeit and lose the sum of ten shillings sterling or\nthe value thereof to be levied on the goods and chattels of every such Offender\nand Offenders, the one half thereof to be forfeited and paid unto the person\nand persons of whom such reproachful words are or shall be spoken or uttered,\nand the other half thereof to the Lord Proprietary and his heirs Lords and Proprietaries<\/span> of this Province; But if such person or\npersons who shall at any time utter or speak any such reproachful words or\nLanguage shall not have Goods or Chattels sufficient and overt within this\nProvince to be taken to satisfy the penalty aforesaid or that the same be not\notherwise speedily satisfied, that then the person or persons soe<\/span> offending shalbe<\/span> publicly\nwhipped, and shall suffer imprisonment without bail or mainprise<\/span>\nuntil he, she, or they, respectively, shall satisfy the party so offended or\ngrieved by such reproachful Language by asking him or her respectively\nforgiveness publicly for such his Offence before the Magistrate or Chief\nOfficer or Officers of the Town or place where such Offence shall be given.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

If the\nlanguage sounds harsh and unforgiving, you have to understand how determined\nthose colonial leaders were in preventing discrimination against anyone who\nprofessed to have a relationship with Jesus Christ, no matter how they differed\ndoctrinally with others.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

These\ncolonists were absolutely determined that America would become a place where\nJesus Christ could and would be worshiped in total and absolute freedom.\u00a0 <\/span>There was no doubt about the fact that stark\ndifferences existed (and still do to this day) between the various\ngroups.\u00a0 There were, however, some fundamental areas of agreement between\nall of the Christian groups and sects that permitted them to set aside their\ndifferences.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

First,<\/span><\/b> <\/span>they\nall agreed that God Almighty, the Creator of Heaven and Earth, was THE Supreme\nGoverning Force in the universe and that all good government was derived from\nHim.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Secondly,<\/span><\/b> <\/span>they all agreed that Jesus Christ was the\nSon of God, and that His death on the Cross was the means by which relationship\nwith God was obtained.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Thirdly,<\/span><\/b> <\/span>they all agreed with the Apostle Peter's\nstatement that <\/span>\"Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none\nother name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.\" <\/span>(Acts 4:12)<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Fourth,<\/span><\/b> <\/span>they without exception believed that the\nBible was the Holy and Inspired Word of God, and that the laws and commandments\nwritten therein formed the basis for all orderly societies.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Fifth,<\/span><\/b> <\/span>they\nwithout exception agreed that these colonies in the New World they called\nAmerica were being formed and created so that despite any other differences,\nJesus Christ would be honored as King and Lord of all; that the worship of God\nmanifested in triune manner could take place freely, without interference and\nwithout personal attacks on the integrity of worshipers, even if others saw\nthings differently and had differing doctrinal persuasions.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

When you\nrealize that these were the fundamentals of their agreement between each other,\nthey could have widely varying interpretations of a hundred other doctrines;\nand yet still manage to coexist in peace in the same villages, towns and places\nof habitation.\u00a0 These colonists were absolutely determined that America\nwould become a place where Jesus Christ could and would be worshiped in total\nand absolute freedom.\u00a0 They were absolutely determined that this new land\nwas going to be different from any and every other nation on the face of the\nearth.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The Lord\nWOULD BE God in this land!\u00a0 This would be a land and a country in which\nthe Gospel would grow, mature, prosper and spread.\u00a0 It would be a place\nfrom which Truth -- the Truth of Salvation through Jesus Christ -- would ring\nforth throughout the earth.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

It was a\nvision of what was to be.\u00a0 Even though there were certainly non-Christians\namong the colonists, there wasn't a one of them who had a problem with this\nvision; and none of them felt discriminated against because of the wording set\nforth in each of the various charters.\u00a0 They were just glad to be able to be\nin a land free of the imposition of unjust laws, far away from tyrants,\ndictators and despots who exacted their personal vengeance upon anyone they\npleased.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nlanguage of the Act DOES sound overbearing and harsh, but the governor and\nlegislators of the colony felt a strong compulsion to enforce a complete\nfreedom of religious worship of God Almighty.\u00a0 There was a clear mandate\nto protect Christianity and Christians.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

No such\nfreedom was afforded those who worshiped false gods.\u00a0 No such freedom was\nafforded those who honored false prophets and religions that excluded Jesus\nChrist as Lord and Savior.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Amazing,\nisn't it, how far this nation has backtracked, and how it has affected the\nliberties of Christians today?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n
