It becomes pretty clear when\nyou read some of the early founders\u2019 documents that they had a VERY strong\npurpose in establishing this nation \u2013 as well as the early colonies \u2013 as a\nplace where Jesus Christ is Lord!<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

The way they expressed\nthemselves back then would go over about like a lead balloon today, but when\nyou realize that they were fed up with a state-sponsored religion, as was\nEngland, it isn\u2019t hard to understand their vehemence.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

Last week,\nwe quoted the first part of Maryland's Act Concerning Religion.\u00a0 <\/span>There\u2019s a lot more to go, so let\u2019s take a\nlook at it.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

An Act Concerning Religion (continued)<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(Note: I have corrected the spelling of the\narchaic English in order to make it more readable.)<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And be it further likewise Enacted by the\nAuthority and consent aforesaid That every person or persons within this\nProvince that shall at any time hereafter profane the Sabbath or Lords day\ncalled Sunday by frequent swearing, drunkenness or by any uncivil or disorderly\nrecreation, or by working on that day when absolute necessity doth not require\nit shall be every such first offence forfeit 2s. 6d sterling or the value\nthereof, and for the second offence 5s sterling or the value thereof, and for\nthe third offence and so for every time he shall offend in like manner\nafterwards 10s sterling or the value thereof.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And in case such offender and offenders shall\nnot have sufficient goods or chattels within this Province to satisfy any of\nthe said Penalties respectively hereby imposed for profaning the Sabbath or\nLord\u2019s day called Sunday as aforesaid, \u00a0<\/span>That\nin Every such case the party so offending shall for the first and second\noffence in that kind be imprisoned till he or she shall publicly in open Court\nbefore the Chief Commander Judge or Magistrate, of that County Towne or\nprecinct where such offence shall be committed acknowledge the Scandal and\noffence he hath in that respect given against God and the good and civil\nGovernment of this Province, <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And for the third offence and for every time\nafter shall also be publicly whipped.\u00a0\n<\/span>And whereas the enforcing of the conscience in matters of Religion hath\nfrequently fallen out to be of dangerous Consequence in those commonwealths\nwhere it hath been practiced, And for the more quiet and peaceable government\nof this Province, and the better to preserve mutual Love and amity amongst the\nInhabitants thereof.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Be it Therefore also by the Lord\u00a0 <\/span>Proprietary with the advice and consent of\nthis Assembly Ordained & enacted (except as in this present Act is before\nDeclared and set forth) that no person or persons whatsoever within this\nProvince, or the Islands, Ports, Harbors, Creek, or havens thereunto belonging\nprofessing to believe in Jesus Christ, shall from henceforth be any ways\ntroubled, Molested or discountenanced for or in respect of his or her religion\nnor in the free exercise thereof within this Province or the Islands thereunto\nbelonging, nor any way compelled to the belief or exercise of any other\nReligion against his or her consent, so as they be not unfaithful to the\nLord Proprietary<\/b>, or molest or conspire against the civil Government\nestablished or to be established in this Province under him or his heirs.\u00a0 <\/span><\/a><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And that all & every person and persons that\nshall presume Contrary to this Act and the true intent and meaning thereof\ndirectly or indirectly either in person or estate willfully to wrong disturb\ntrouble or molest any person whatsoever within this Province professing to\nbelieve in Jesus Christ for or in respect of his or her religion or the free\nexercise thereof within this Province other than is provided for in this Act\nthat such person or persons so offending, shall be compelled to pay treble\ndamages to the party so wronged or molested, and for every such offence shall\nalso forfeit 20s sterling in money or the value thereof, half thereof for the\nuse of the Lord Proprietary, and his heirs Lords and Proprietaries of this\nProvince, and the other half for the use of the party so wronged or molested as\naforesaid,\u00a0 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Or if the party so offending as aforesaid shall\nrefuse or be unable to recompense the party so wronged, or to satisfy such fine\nor forfeiture, then such Offender shall be severely punished by public whipping\n& imprisonment during the pleasure of the Lord Proprietary, or his\nLieutenant or Chief Governor of this Province for the time being without bail\nor mainprise.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And be it further also Enacted by the authority\nand consent aforesaid That the Sheriff or other Officer or Officers from time\nto time to be appointed & authorized for that purpose, of the County Town\nor precinct where every particular offence in this present Act contained shall\nhappen at any time to be committed and whereupon there is hereby a forfeiture\nfine or penalty imposed shall from time to time detain and seize the goods and\nestate of every such person so offending as aforesaid against this present Act\nor any part thereof, and sell the same or any part thereof for the full\nsatisfaction of such forfeiture, fine, or penalty as aforesaid, Restoring unto\nthe party so offending the Remainder or over plus of the said goods or estate\nafter such satisfaction so made as aforesaid.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Whewww!!!\u00a0\nStrong, isn't it?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We can\nlook back in retrospect and see that while their motives were certainly pure,\nthe methods and efforts to enforce a Christian environment crossed the line\nwhere an individual's freewill choice (of a relationship with Jesus Christ) was\ninvolved.\u00a0 One can legislate a moral environment and create laws that\nimpose penalties for public immorality, but one cannot legislate\nspirituality.\u00a0 I've no doubt that the framers of our Constitution took\nthis into account.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Nevertheless,\nthis 1649 Act served as the law of the land in Maryland (where religious\nliberties were concerned) for roughly 220 years until Maryland organized itself\nas a state and ratified a new state constitution.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Even with\nan amendment to the state constitution which was ratified in 1970 to deal with\nthe FDR Court's abominable and errant interpretation of the first Amendment to\nthe United States Constitution, the Maryland State Constitution of 1867 still\ncontains the following verbiage:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Article 36.<\/span><\/b> That as it is the duty\nof every man to worship God in such manner as he thinks most acceptable to Him,\nall persons are equally entitled to protection in their religious liberty;\nwherefore, no person ought by any law to be molested in his person or estate,\non account of his religious persuasion, or profession, or for his religious\npractice, unless, under the color of religion, he shall disturb the good order,\npeace or safety of the State, or shall infringe the laws of morality, or injure\nothers in their natural, civil or religious rights; nor ought any person to be\ncompelled to frequent, or maintain, or contribute, unless on contract, to\nmaintain, any place of worship, or any ministry; nor shall any person,\notherwise competent, be deemed incompetent as a witness, or juror, on account\nof his religious belief; provided, he believes in the existence of God, and\nthat under His dispensation such person will be held morally accountable for\nhis acts, and be rewarded or punished therefor either in this world or in the\nworld to come. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Nothing shall prohibit or require the making\nreference to belief in, reliance upon, or invoking the aid of God or a Supreme\nBeing in any governmental or public document, proceeding, activity, ceremony,\nschool, institution, or place.<\/span> <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(Note the\nfollowing 1970 amendment to this article.)<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Nothing in this article shall constitute an\nestablishment of religion (amended by Chapter 558, Acts of 1970, ratified\nNov. 3, 1970)<\/i>.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

During the\nnext few weeks, we'll try to finish up with the 13 original colonies that\nbecame the basis for America's foundation as a nation.\u00a0 What is striking\nabout the history of each of those colonies is that -- without exception -- the\nfreedom to worship the Lord Jesus Christ was at the core of each colony's\nestablishing.\u00a0 All the way along the eastern seaboard, the colonies were\nformed by different groups of Christians escaping persecution in their European\nhomelands, or Christians who had an evangelical zeal to spread the Gospel among\nthe various Indian tribes<\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Allow me\nto digress for a moment.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I have\nperiodically noted the comments shared between Della and me when Bill Clinton\nbecame our President. Despite the fact that we pretty much knew what direction\nhe was going to take this nation when he beat George H. W. Bush in 1992, Della\nand I actively prayed for him. More than that, we prayed for our nation as a\nwhole.

\nBill Clinton was elected because he was God\u2019s representative to this nation.\nThat sounds really hard to say when you consider that I am a lifetime\nRepublican. Bill Clinton was not placed in office by God because he was a\nDemocrat. He was placed in office because the Lord knew exactly how he would\nlead this nation, and because that leadership would drive Christians to their\nknees in a way this nation had not seen since Jimmy Carter was in office.

\nChristians were not fulfilling their spiritual responsibilities to uphold the\nspiritual state of America. They were, in fact, failing miserably. Voices were\nbeing raised in attacks on our President, on members of Congress, on the\nJudiciary, on local and state representatives \u2013 you name it! <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Instead of\nfollowing the mandate Paul laid out before God\u2019s people <\/span>(\u201cI\nexhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions,\nand giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in\nauthority.\u201d)<\/span> <\/span>Christians\nwere attacking the nation\u2019s leadership on every hand.\u00a0 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The same\napplies today.\u00a0 <\/span>You have Christians who\nabsolutely hate President Trump \u2013 not because he is leading the nation in the\npath that God is directing him to go, but because he is shaking up the\nestablishment, the status quo.\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019m\ninclined to believe that his behavior is calculated to throw the Deep State\ninto confusion because they just don\u2019t know what he is doing.

\nI\u2019m going to say something here that some of you may take offense to, but\nthat\u2019s just tough. You need to hear the Truth.
\n
\nWe get the kind of government we deserve. We get righteous leadership at the\nhelm of our nation \u2013 leadership called, anointed by God and empowered to lead\nus to peace and prosperity \u2013 when we as the people of God fulfill our\nresponsibility. When we fail in that responsibility, we also get a government and\nleadership empowered by God \u2013 but this is a leadership that does not lead us\ntowards peace and prosperity.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Our\nforefathers covenanted together to form a nation \"under God.\"\u00a0\nThey understood what it meant when they made that covenant.\u00a0 They put\ntheir lives on the line.\u00a0 My late friend and former campaign manager (when\nI ran for Congress), Tony Smith, periodically talked about what it cost each\nand every one of them.\u00a0 The majority of the signers of the Declaration of\nIndependence were well off, if not wealthy, when they put their names to pen\nand parchment.\u00a0 Many of them lost everything they had in order to ensure\nthat future generations would have a free country, \"one nation under\nGod.\"<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\napostle Paul laid out very clearly what kind of government God purposes for a\npraying people. The verse I just quoted is a small portion of what Paul had to\nsay on the topic.

\nI Timothy 2:1-4 reads: <\/span>\u201cI exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers,\nintercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for\nall that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all\ngodliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our\nSaviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the\ntruth.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Next week,\nlet\u2019s explore this a little more fully as we get into our responsibility as\nChristians in this day and age.\u00a0 <\/span>Paul was\nnot just making a suggestion in this instance.\u00a0\n<\/span>His exhortation was a command from the Lord Jesus Christ.\u00a0 <\/span>That, my friends, is the way to good and\nrighteous government!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n
