my story regarding my congressional\ncampaign in 2003-2004.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>My story is\nreally nothing but a microcosm of what has taken place nationally in our\nabandonment of responsibility for the nation, and accepting the instruction\nthat Paul gave to Timothy when he wrote, <\/span><\/b><span style='font-size:\n13.0pt;font-family:\"Bernard MT Condensed\",\"serif\";color:#C00000'>I exhort\ntherefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, <i>and<\/i>\ngiving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and <i>for<\/i> all that are\nin authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and\nhonesty. \u00a0<\/p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><sup><span style='font-size:8.5pt;font-family:\"Bernard MT style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:maroon'>And our responsibility goes beyond the need to pray and\nintercede,<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>If we don\u2019t get actively\ninvolved in the process by at the very least going to the polls to vote, we\ngenerally get unrighteous leadership \u2014 and we have no one to blame but\nourselves.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>A\nfriend who was a very well-off Republican banker in McAllen told me that he was\nputting the maximum amount of money he could put into a campaign to\n\"enable Doggett's opponent to beat him.\"\u00a0 He went on to say,\n\"After the primary, I will support your campaign to the maximum.\"<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>The\ntactic backfired.\u00a0 I lost the primary by less than 900 votes, and the\nDemocratic challenger to Lloyd went down in flames.\u00a0 After the results of\nthe primary were posted, I ran into many Christians who expressed their\ndisappointment over the outcome.\u00a0 My question to them was, \"Did you\nvote?\"\u00a0 In more cases than I can count, the answer was \"No, we\nfigured you'd win easily against your primary opponent.\"<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>In\nactual fact, less than 20% of eligible voters in our Texas district turned out\nfor the primary.\u00a0 The actual number of people who made the decision on\nbehalf of the entire district amounted to less than 1 in 10 eligible\nvoters.\u00a0 If even half of the eligible voters had voted in the primary, the\nresults would have been considerably different.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Why\ndo I say that?\u00a0 Because the district has statistically somewhere between\n60 and 70 percent of its residents who claim to be born again Christians, and\nthe number of voters who attend church or call themselves \"Christian\"\nactually exceeds 90%.\u00a0 When you have 80 percent of that number who stay\nhome during the primaries and refuse to exercise their responsibility to vote,\nyou allow government to take a \"whatever\" course.\u00a0 Thus\nChristians get the kind of government they deserve.\u00a0 They've abdicated\ntheir spiritual responsibility.\u00a0 They've abdicated their freedoms and left\nthe outcome to \"whatever.\"<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Christians\nwho are deceived into thinking they can play campaigns against each other by\nmanipulating the vote outcome through ticket-switching during primaries play\nright into the Enemy's hands.\u00a0 They effectively become the tools of Satan's\nagenda.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Although\nwe like to think<a name=\"_GoBack\"><\/a> this is a Republican-Democrat issue, it\nreally isn't!\u00a0 You've got rotten apples in both parties.\u00a0 When such a\ntiny number of eligible voters turn out on primary day, they really alter the\nshape of the general election.\u00a0 The reason they don't turn out is often\nrelated to ignorance of the candidates running.\u00a0 They don't take the\nnecessary time to find out what each candidate stands for, and whether those\nthings he or she profess during the political campaign actually reflect their\nlife values.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Jesus\nChrist made a life-and-death decision, a decision related to the covenant He\nwas making in order to free us from the bondages of the flesh and the bondages\nof Satan.\u00a0 It cost Him His life.\u00a0 His blood was shed, and His body\nwas broken in order to provide us the opportunity to regain those liberties and\nthe power and authority over all the affairs of this earth lost when Adam and\nEve ate from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>People\nwho enter into this covenant with Jesus Christ regain access to the \"all\npower and authority is given unto me in heaven and in earth\" by virtue of\nall that covenant provides.\u00a0 If we call ourselves Christians and walk in a\nplace of union with Christ, responsibility comes with \"all\nauthority.\"\u00a0 The abdicating of the responsibility results in wicked\ngovernment and the systematic loss of our liberties as Christians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>We\nhave no one to blame but ourselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>America's\nfounding fathers had a good grip on their responsibility.\u00a0 It's why we see\nfolks like John Winthrop and William Penn incorporating statements like this in\ntheir charters and grants<b>, <span style='color:olive'>\"for the\ndirecting, ruling, and disposing of all other Matters and Things, whereby our\nsaid People, Inhabitants there, may be so religiously, peaceably, and civilly\ngoverned, as their good Life and orderly Conversation, may win and incite the\nNatives of Country, to the Knowledge and Obedience of the only true God and\nSavior of Mankind, and the Christian Faith, which is our Royal Intention, and\nthe Adventurers free Profession, is the principal End of this Plantation.\"<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>You\nsee it, don't you?\u00a0 They saw a spiritual responsibility in the\nestablishing of a new nation.\u00a0 They saw that with their covenant-walk with\nthe Lord Jesus Christ came the firm requirement to establish the kind of\ngovernance which would <b><span style='color:olive'>\"win and incite the\nnatives of country to the knowledge and obedience of the only true God and\nSavior of Mankind, and the Christian Faith.\"<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Nothing\nhas changed since then.\u00a0 The responsibility for today's Christians is even\ngreater.\u00a0 The revelation of our relationship with Christ has only grown in\nthe centuries since, and with that revelation has come even greater\nrequirements for the people of God.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Jesus\nput it like this, <\/span><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Bernard MT Condensed\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#C00000'>\"For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much\nrequired.\" <\/span><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>(Luke\n12:48)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Because\nit is the will of God (and His heart's desire) that we have good government so\nthat -- as the apostle Paul writes -- <\/span><span style='font-size:13.0pt;\nfont-family:\"Bernard MT Condensed\",\"serif\";color:#C00000'>\"we may lead a\nquiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.\u00a0 For this is good\nand acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be\nsaved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth\"\u00a0 <\/span><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>(I Timothy 2:1-4)\nwe MUST as Christians take that great responsibility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Covenant\nis NOT one-sided.\u00a0 The covenant of blood that Jesus made with us by His\ndeath on the Cross requires our participation.\u00a0 We cannot have the\narrogance to call ourselves \"Christians\" and then abdicate our part\nin this covenant.\u00a0 The governments of this earth that we live under are\nour responsibility to uphold, to pray for, to become involved in and to\nexercise spiritual authority over so that the Great Commission CAN be fulfilled\nand Christ can receive His full inheritance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>I've\ntaken much more time with this part of today's discussion than I intended, but\nlet's get to some of what I promised last week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>On\nDecember 21, 1624, Gustavus Adolphus, <b>\"by the grace of God, King of\nSweden, <span class=SpellE>Gothland<\/span> and the Wends, Grand Duke of Finland,\nDuke of Estonia and <span class=SpellE>Dalecarlia<\/span>, Lord of <span\nclass=SpellE>Lugermanland<\/span>, etc., etc.,\" <\/b>granted a general\nwarrant to William <span class=SpellE>Ussling<\/span> for the purpose of\ncreating trade between Sweden and the newly-forming American colonies (among\nothers).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Clearly\nstated in this warrant is the inherent purpose to bring honor and glory to the\nLord, to His name, and to the general welfare of all involved.\u00a0 Thus King\nAdolphus writes, <b><span style='color:#0070C0'>\"that the said <span\nclass=SpellE>Ussling<\/span> has also promised to us and engaged himself that he\nwill organize this company using the utmost of his diligence and power, while\nhe cherishes the certain hope that, with God's gracious blessing and help, it\nshall have a good beginning and progress as well as a favorable result and end.\nSuch being the proposition which he made, we have taken it into consideration\nand find it to be founded and based upon so good reasons that we cannot\ndisapprove of it nor do we see but what it is sure that if God will give\nsuccess it shall tend to the honor of his Holy Name, to our and the state's\nwelfare, and the advancement and advantage of our subjects.\"<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Two\nyears later, the Swedish king granted a Charter of Privileges establishing the\nSwedish South Company with the same goal and purpose in mind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>That\ncharter reads, in part, <b><span style='color:#0070C0'>\"it is also most\nlikely that the said people may likewise be made more civilized and taught\nmorality and the Christian religion by the mutual intercourse and trade.\nTherefore, we have maturely considered and as far as in our power concluded\nthat the advantages, profits, and welfare of our kingdom and faithful subjects,\nbesides the further propagation of the Holy Gospel, will be much improved and\nincreased by the discovery of new commercial relations and navigation.\"<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal grant or charter you look at when it comes\nto the colonization of America; there was always a clearly stated purpose to\npropagate the Gospel.\u00a0 There was always incorporated the right to worship\nthe Lord God.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>One\nof the myths propagated by liberals is the catch-all phrase, \"guaranteed\nfreedom of religion,\" whenever they refer to the colonization of America\nand its founding.\u00a0 What they seek to leave out and in so doing, create an\numbrella for every religion in the world, is the fact that the freedoms\nguaranteed in each of these charters specifically applied to Christianity and\nnothing else!\u00a0 \"Freedom of religion\" specifically referred to\nthe variances in understanding and doctrine between Christians, NOT the\nacceptance or tolerance of Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, or any cult or eastern\nreligion which dictated either the worship of some god other than God Almighty\nor the Lord Jesus Christ, or proposed some path to relationship with God\noutside of Jesus Christ.\u00a0 It simply wasn't in their thinking.\u00a0\nAmerica was being founded purely for Christians, and for the freedom to worship\nGod within the framework of Scripture and Biblical understanding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Let\u2019s\nnow begin looking at the discussions and the documents passed back and forth\nbetween our founding fathers that led to America's War of Independence, our\nUnited States Constitution, and the unification of the colonies under a single\ngovernment \"under God.\" <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>It\nwas Woodrow Wilson who made the statement, \"A nation which does not\nremember what it was yesterday, does not know what it is today, nor what it is\ntrying to do.\u00a0 We are trying to do a futile thing if we don't know where\nwe have come from, or what we have been about.\"<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>This\nis a serious problem in our nation today.\u00a0 The overwhelming majority of\nChristians -- no, forget that; make that Americans -- have no clue what we\nwere, can scarcely grasp what we are as a nation today, where we've come from,\nor what we've been about as a nation during the past couple of centuries.\u00a0\nThe contamination of our society by the liberal media, and liberal educators\nwho have gone out of their way to seriously re-write our history, has so\naffected the mindset of this generation that we have become a nation adrift in\na sea of confusion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Today's\ngeneration of young people do not realize the sacrifices our forefathers\nmade.\u00a0 The current state of political correctness has created such a societal\nframework as to make our nation's founding fathers into criminals, were they to\nlive today.\u00a0 Our court system has so misapplied and misused Thomas\nJefferson's letter to the Danbury Baptist Association -- supposing it to be the\ninterpretation of the First Amendment to the Constitution -- and at the same\ntime ignored how Thomas Jefferson himself viewed the First Amendment and\npracticed its liberties as President.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>A\nvirtual plethora of documents within the Library of Congress tell us that\nJefferson had begun to alter his view of Christianity in the decade before he\nbecame President.\u00a0 Much of what we know about his previous life and\nhistory shows that he considered himself a \"Deist\" -- meaning that he\nunquestionably accepted the fact that there was a God in Heaven who was the\nCreator of all, and that He overlooked the affairs of men.\u00a0 His\n\"Deism,\" to this point however, did not accept Jesus Christ, His\nvalidity as the Son of God, nor the price He paid on the Cross as the atonement\nfor our sins.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>By\nthe mid-1790's, Jefferson had begun to endorse the position of his\nfellow-founders that Christianity was \"necessary for the welfare of a\nrepublican government\" and that it was, as George Washington had\nproclaimed in his Farewell Address to the nation, \"indispensable for the\nhappiness and prosperity of the people.\"\u00a0 Jefferson, had in fact,\nsaid as much in his First Inaugural Address.\u00a0 His attendance at religious\nservices, conducted at the House of Representatives, was his way of offering\nmore than symbolic support for religious faith and its beneficent role in\nrepublican government.\u00a0 Though there seems little evidence that Jefferson\nhimself accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior, he clearly\nbelieved that the fundamental tenets of Christianity were essential in order to\nmaintain a prosperous and free nation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Some\nmonths ago, I talked at length about Jefferson and his letter to the Danbury\nBaptist Association, and quoted from the recently FBI-restored original draft\nof that letter, with his original statements made prior to deletion at the time\nthe letter was finally made public.\u00a0 Let me refer you back to a Coffee\nBreak for reference' sake written on 11\/21\/2005: <\/span><a\nhref=\"..\/..\/..\/..\/Regner\/Documents\/COFFEE%20BREAKS\/American%20Covenant\/JEFFERSON,%20RELIGION%20&%20CHRISTIANITY.htm\"><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Jefferson, Religion\nand Christianity<\/span><\/a><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>To\nquote from commentary made James Hutson, Chief of the Manuscript Division at\nthe Library of Congress:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:34.6pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#003399'>\"It seems likely that in modifying the draft of the Danbury\nBaptist letter by eliminating words like \"eternal\" and \"merely\ntemporal,\" which sounded so uncompromisingly secular, Jefferson was\nmotivated not merely by political considerations but by a realization that\nthese words, written in haste to make a political statement, did not accurately\nreflect the conviction he had reached by the beginning of 1802 on the role of\ngovernment in religion. Jefferson would never compromise his views that there\nwere things government could not do in the religious sphere -- legally establish\none creed as official truth and support it with its full financial and coercive\npowers. But by 1802, he seems to have come around to something close to the\nviews of New England Baptist leaders such as Isaac Backus and Caleb Blood, who\nbelieved that, provided the state kept within its well-appointed limits, it\ncould provide \"friendly aids\" to the churches, including putting at\ntheir disposal public property that even a stickler like John Leland was\ncomfortable using. <\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:34.6pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:34.6pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#003399'>\"In gutting his draft was Jefferson playing the hypocrite,\nsacrificing his principles to political expediency, as his Federalist opponents\nnever tired of charging?\u00a0 By no means, for the Danbury Baptist letter was\nnever conceived by Jefferson to be a statement of fundamental principles; it\nwas meant to be a political manifesto, nothing more. <\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:34.6pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:35.7pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>There\u2019s\nstill a fair amount of
