was just reading\nfrom a collection of comments made by some of our Supreme Court justices\nthroughout the years and stumbled on one that deserves repeating within the\nframework of this series of discussions.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='text-indent:31.45pt;mso-pagination:none'><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>We've\nalready talked about Thomas Jefferson and some of his contributions to our\nnation's founding.\u00a0 What some folks may not know or remember is that he\nappointed John Marshall to be the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in\n1801.\u00a0 John Marshall served this nation as Chief Justice for 34\nyears.\u00a0 In a letter dated May 9, 1833 to Jasper Adams, addressing the\nquestion of our nation's foundations and liberties, he wrote, <o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='text-indent:31.45pt;mso-pagination:none'><b><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#00642D'>\"The American population is entirely Christian, and with us\nChristianity and Religion are identified. It would be strange indeed, if with\nsuch a people, our institutions did not presuppose Christianity, and did not\noften refer to it, and exhibit relations with it.\"<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='text-indent:31.45pt;mso-pagination:none'><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>And\nnow it is supposedly illegal for our various institutions of government, and\npeople within those institutions to name the name of Jesus Christ, or to\nworship the Lord publicly and acknowledge Him as Lord, or THE final authority\nin this nation?<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Right.<span\nstyle='color:black'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='text-indent:31.45pt;mso-pagination:none'><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Now\nyou know why I'm doing this series.\u00a0 Americans -- and especially\nChristians -- need to wake up and realize that the left is systematically\nrobbing us blind and stealing our heritage as a Christian nation.\u00a0 When\nChristians stand by and do nothing, stay out of the political process treating\nit as though it has \"cooties\", the leftist liberals who hate our\nheritage, hate God, and hate everything this nation was founded upon,\nprogressively encroach on our freedoms, rewriting history to suit their agenda,\nre-shaping our society so as to eliminate our memories of how our founding\nfathers covenanted with the Lord and each other in order to build a free and\nprosperous society.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='text-indent:30.85pt;mso-pagination:none'><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>In\nMatthew 25:33-34, 41, we read: <\/span><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:\n115%;font-family:\"Bernard MT Condensed\",\"serif\";color:#C00000'>\"And he\nshall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.\u00a0 Then\nshall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father,\ninherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the\nworld.......Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me,\nye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels....\"<\/span><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='text-indent:30.85pt;mso-pagination:none'><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>And\nwhat determined the difference between those \"on the right\" and those\n\"on the left?\" Those on the right exemplified <i><span\nstyle='color:maroon'>agape<\/span><\/i> love -- the love of the Lord Jesus Christ\n-- whereas those on the left did not.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='text-indent:31.45pt;mso-pagination:none'><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>\u00a0Those\non the right exemplified <i><span style='color:maroon'>agape<\/span><\/i> love --\nthe love of the Lord Jesus Christ -- whereas those on the left did not.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='text-indent:31.45pt;mso-pagination:none'><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Today,\nwe have idiots on the left claiming that socialism is how you exemplify the\nlove of the Lord.\u00a0 What they totally ignore is the fact that Jesus places\nthe responsibility on the individual, NOT on the government.\u00a0 Using\ngovernment to deal with social needs and ills is a safe and secure cop-out for\nthose who want to ignore their own personal and individual responsibility --\nAND ANSWERABILITY -- to the Lord.\u00a0 They attempt to make bigger and bigger\ngovernment (at the financial expense of every individual) the solution to every\nproblem.\u00a0 Instead of solving the problem, big government only exacerbates\nit.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='text-indent:31.45pt;mso-pagination:none'><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Hence,\nJesus accurately and appropriately puts these people in the category of\n\"goats\" on the left whose ultimate end is \"everlasting\nfire.\"\u00a0 And that's exactly where the \"left\" belongs!<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='text-indent:31.45pt;mso-pagination:none'><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>OK.\u00a0\nNow that I've lit a few firebrands myself a la Patrick Henry, I'll come down\noff my perch.\u00a0 Grab your cup, pull up a chair and let's talk about George\nWashington.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p style='text-indent:31.45pt'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Born\nin 1732 in Westmoreland County, Virginia to parents who were part of \"the\nVirginia Gentry,\" and descended from English Gentry, George Washington's\nupbringing could be referred to as a mix of Anglicanism and Quakerism.\u00a0\nFrom his Anglican heritage, he developed the inclination to withhold his\npersonal convictions concerning his relationship with the Lord, choosing rather\nto refer to the Lord as \"Providence,\"\u00a0 From his Quaker heritage\nand surroundings, he despised war and everything associated with it.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p style='text-indent:31.45pt'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>His\nlife, therefore, was a striking contrast to one who so hated war.\u00a0 A\npragmatist, he took Patrick Henry's view as enunciated before the Continental\nCongress thus, <a name=\"_GoBack\"><b><span style='color:#4F6228;mso-themecolor:\naccent3;mso-themeshade:128'>\" As individuals professing a holy religion,\nit is our bounden duty to forgive injuries done us as individuals. But when the\ncharacter of Christian you add the character of patriot, you are in a different\nsituation. Our mild and holy system of religion inculcates an admirable maxim\nof forbearance. If your enemy smite one cheek, turn the other to him. But you\nmust stop there. You cannot apply this to your country. As members of a social\ncommunity, this maxim does not apply to you. When you consider injuries done to\nyour country your political duty tells you of vengeance. Forgive as a private\nman, but never forgive public injuries. Observations of this nature are\nexceedingly unpleasant, but it is my duty to use them.\"<\/span><\/b><\/a><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p style='text-indent:31.45pt'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Highly\nintolerant towards the bickering that went on between the various\ndenominational groups, Washington refused to associate himself with any\nspecific church.\u00a0 As Commander-in-Chief of the military forces, he banned\na practice referred to as \"Guying\", referring to Guy Fawkes, and the\nNew England celebration of \"Pope's Day.\"\u00a0 It was a practice\nwhich ridiculed Roman Catholics, and George Washington took the sensitivities\nof his Catholic soldiers to heart by ordering that the festivity forever be\ncancelled among the military.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p style='text-indent:31.45pt'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Attending\na church service with his wife, Martha, the minister called for the serving of communion.\u00a0\nWhen Martha participated in the communion and he chose not to, the minister\npreached a sermon pointedly directed at Washington's non-participation.\u00a0\nThat the minister would use his pulpit to exercise personal condemnation on the\nPresident was so offensive to Washington that he refused to set foot in a\nchurch -- any church -- from that day forward.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p style='text-indent:31.45pt'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>That\nsaid, those who knew him and walked with him as close friends and confidantes\nsaw him as a man of deep personal faith and conviction.\u00a0 Despite the fact\nthat he rarely demonstrated his faith in a public arena, John Adams (who\nsucceeded Washington as President) wrote to his wife in 1774 that at the First\nContinental Congress, \"Washington was kneeling, and Henry, and Randolph\nand Rutledge, and Lee and Jay....\"<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p style='text-indent:31.45pt'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>In\ncontrast to the public kneeling question, there is considerable documentation\nfrom eyewitnesses to show that George Washington did pray on his knees in\nprivate. His step<\/span><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\nmso-bidi-font-family:Arial'>-<\/span><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>grandson and step-granddaughter and other relatives\nreported seeing Washington on his knees in prayer in the library at Mount\nVernon. His aides-de-camp recalled discovering him on his knees in prayer in\nhis office in military headquarters buildings during the war years. His\npresidential personal secretaries told of coming upon Washington 'lost in\nreverent prayer' before he had to make a major policy decision. Isaac Potts, a\nQuaker, told his wife -- and later many others -- of seeing Commander in Chief\nGeorge Washington in a solitary, reverent, kneeling prayer in the snow at Valley\nForge. Potts thought Washington was 'upon his knees praying for his\narmy.'\" (Commentary, compliments of Paul Bessel)<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p style='text-indent:.5in'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>In\n1827, Robert Lewis, a nephew of George Washington and private secretary during\nthe first part of Washington's presidency, wrote that he had plenty of\nopportunity \"for observing his private devotions in his library both\nmorning and evening; that on those occasions [Lewis had seen him] in a kneeling\nposture with a Bible open before him, and believed such to have been his daily\npractice.\"<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p style='text-indent:.5in'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>There\nare many historians who have pooh-poohed George Washington's faith, just as\nthere are many revisionists who have sought to portray America as something\nother than a Christian nation.\u00a0 Earlier, I quoted from Chief Justice John\nMarshall's statement concerning America as being Christian.\u00a0 Listen to\nwhat Washington said in his farewell speech when he left office as President.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p style='text-indent:.5in'><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#4F6228;mso-themecolor:accent3;mso-themeshade:128'>\"For this you\nhave every inducement of sympathy and interest. Citizens by birth or choice, of\na common country, that country has a right to concentrate your affections. The\nname of American, which belongs to you, in your national capacity, must always\nexalt the just pride of Patriotism, more than any appellation derived from\nlocal discriminations.\u00a0 <u>With slight shades of difference, you have the\nsame Religion, Manners, Habits & Political Principles<\/u>. You have in a\ncommon cause fought & triumphed together.\u00a0 The independence &\nliberty you possess are the work of joint councils, and joint efforts--of\ncommon dangers, sufferings and successes.\"<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p style='text-indent:.5in'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>I\nhave underlined Washington's comment here to illustrate.\u00a0 Despite\nobviously and observed doctrinal differences between Catholics, Presbyterians,\nBaptists, Quakers, Anglicans, etc., George Washington saw them as \"slight\nshades of difference,\" with faith in God and Jesus Christ as being the\ncentral and binding factor.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p style='text-indent:.5in'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>He\ncontinued his farewell address and on page 20 & 22 of a 32-page prepared\naddress to the nation, he said (and this is perhaps the most widely quoted\nportion of his speech among Christians):<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p style='text-indent:.5in'><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#4F6228;mso-themecolor:accent3;mso-themeshade:128'>\"Of all the\ndispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, <u>Religion and\nmorality are indispensable supports<\/u>.\u00a0 In vain would that man claim the\ntribute of Patriotism, who should labour to subvert these great Pillars of\nhuman happiness, these firmest props of the duties of Men & citizens.\u00a0\nThe mere Politician, equally with the pious man ought to respect & to\ncherish them.\u00a0 A volume could not trace all their connections with private\n& public felicity.\u00a0 Let it simply be asked where is the security for\nproperty, for reputation, for life, if the sense of religious obligation <em><span\nstyle='font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>desert<\/span><\/em> the Oaths, which\nare the instruments of investigation in Courts of Justice?\u00a0 <u>And let us\nwith caution indulge the supposition, that morality can be maintained without religion<\/u>.\u00a0\nWhatever may be conceded to the influence of refined education on minds of\npeculiar structure--reason & experience both forbid us to expect that\nNational morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p style='text-indent:.5in'><span class=SpellE><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;\nfont-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";color:#4F6228;mso-themecolor:accent3;\nmso-themeshade:128'>'Tis<\/span><\/b><\/span><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;\nfont-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";color:#4F6228;mso-themecolor:accent3;\nmso-themeshade:128'> substantially true, that virtue or morality is a necessary\nspring of popular government. The rule indeed extends with more or less force\nto every species of Free Government. Who that is a sincere friend to it, can\nlook with indifference upon attempts to shake the foundation of the fabric............\"<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p style='text-indent:.5in'><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#4F6228;mso-themecolor:accent3;mso-themeshade:128'>\".......Observe\ngood faith & justice towards all Nations.
