look at John Jay, the first Supreme\nCourt Justice appointed by George Washington.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:31.45pt;mso-pagination:\nnone'>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='text-indent:31.45pt;mso-pagination:none'><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>On\nApril 20, 1794, John Jay is obviously embroiled in issues of great controversy\nas Chief Justice, and he sends a note to his wife, Sally Jay, to encourage\nher.\u00a0 He writes, <b><i><span style='color:#00642D'>\"God's will be\ndone; to him I resign--in him I confide.\u00a0 Do the like.\u00a0 Any other philosophy\napplicable to this occasion is delusive.\u00a0 Away with it!\"<\/span><\/i><\/b><span\nstyle='color:black'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='text-indent:31.45pt;mso-pagination:none'><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Two\nyears later, on February 14, 1796, John Jay writes to the Rev. <span\nclass=SpellE>Uzal<\/span> Ogden and says, <b><i><span style='color:#00642D'>\"I\nhave long been of opinion that the evidence of the truth of Christianity\nrequires only to be carefully examined to produce conviction in candid minds .\n. .\"<\/span><\/i><\/b><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='text-indent:31.45pt;mso-pagination:none'><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>A\nyear later in a letter to <span class=SpellE>Jedediah<\/span> Morse (February\n28, 1797) concerning the choice and qualifications for elective leaders, Jay\nwrote,<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='text-indent:31.45pt;mso-pagination:none'><b><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#00642D'><span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0<\/span><i>\"Providence has\ngiven to our people the choice of their rulers. And <u>it is the duty<\/u> as\nwell as the privilege and interest, of a Christian nation to select and prefer\nChristians for their rulers.\"<\/i>\u00a0 <\/span><\/b><span style='font-size:\n13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>(the emphasis is\nmine)<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='text-indent:31.45pt;mso-pagination:none'><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>John\nJay retired from the Supreme Court in 1795 only to be elected Governor of New\nYork in his absence. George Washington, nearing the end of his presidency, had\nsent him to London in 1794 to negotiate a settlement with the British over\ntheir interference in trade and shipping with America.\u00a0 During his\nabsence, Alexander Hamilton -- now a close friend and ardent supporter of his\nfellow-Federalist -- placed John Jay's name in contention for the governorship\nof New York without even asking his friend.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='text-indent:31.45pt;mso-pagination:none'><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Jay\nreturned from London on May 28, 1795, the voting was under way; and on June\n5th, the announcement was made that John Jay had become the new governor by a\nmargin of 1,589 votes.\u00a0 It forced his retirement from the Supreme Court --\na choice not to his liking, but one which acceded to the will and desires of\nhis friends.\u00a0 He served as New York's governor until 1801 when he retired\n-- or attempted to -- from public life.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='text-indent:31.45pt;mso-pagination:none'><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>It\nwas a letter to John <span class=SpellE>Bristed<\/span> on April 23, 1811, in\nwhich John Jay was reminiscing about one of his trips to France on behalf of\nGeorge Washington that he wrote,<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='text-indent:31.45pt;mso-pagination:none'><b><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#00642D'><span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0<\/span><i>\"While in France\n. . . I do not recollect to have had more than two conversations with atheists\nabout their tenants. The first was this: I was at a large party, of which were\nseveral of that description. They spoke freely and contemptuously of religion.\nI took no part in the conversation. In the course of it, one of them asked me\nif I believed in Christ? I answered that I did, and that I thanked God that I\ndid.\"<\/i><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='text-indent:31.45pt;mso-pagination:none'><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>In\n1816, John Jay became one of the founders of the American Bible Society.\u00a0\nIn an address to the Society on May 9, 1822, he said, <span style='color:black'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='text-indent:31.45pt;mso-pagination:none'><b><i><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#00642D'>\"The same merciful Providence has also been pleased to\ncause every material event and occurrence respecting our Redeemer, together\nwith the gospel he proclaimed, and the miracles and predictions to which it\ngave occasion, to be faithfully recorded and preserved for the information and\nbenefit of all mankind.\"<\/span><\/i><\/b><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;\nline-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";color:#00642D'>\u00a0<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='text-indent:31.45pt;mso-pagination:none'><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>During\nthose early years as our nation's Constitution was being formed, and the\nfoundation of this country being firmly established, a young man whose life was\ngreatly influenced by John Jay, Joseph Storey, began to follow in Jay's\nfootsteps.\u00a0 I won't take time to delve into Joseph Storey's life today,\nother than to say that he served as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court from\n1811 to 1845.<span style='color:black'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='text-indent:31.45pt;mso-pagination:none'><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Commenting\n-- among other things -- on the First Amendment to the Constitution, Storey\ngave a lecture titled \"The Value & Importance of Legal Studies\"\non August 25, 1829 at Harvard University.\u00a0 In that speech he stated, <o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='text-indent:31.45pt;mso-pagination:none'><b><i><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#00642D'>\u201cThe real object of the (First) Amendment was not to\ncountenance, much less advance, <span class=SpellE>Mahometanism<\/span> (<\/span><\/i><\/b><b><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#00642D'>Mohammedanism [Islam])<i>, or Judaism, or infidelity, by\nprostrating Christianity; <u>but to exclude all rivalry among Christian sects<\/u>\n(denominations).\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/b><i><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:\n115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>\n(the emphasis is mine)<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='text-indent:31.45pt;mso-pagination:none'><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>So\nmuch for the argument set forth by the FDR Supreme Court concerning \"the\nwall of separation between church and state.\"\u00a0 Their argument\nabsolutely ignored written history.\u00a0 John Jay was at least the equal and\nperhaps more of a contributor to the establishment of the U. S. Constitution\nthan Thomas Jefferson.\u00a0 Yet the Court chose to take Jefferson's letter out\nof context for its ruling and totally ignore the statements of John Jay and\nJoseph Storey.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='text-indent:31.45pt;mso-pagination:none'><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Are\nyou beginning to get a better picture of our founding fathers?\u00a0 Are you\nbeginning to understand why Christians today must treat the attack on our\nChristian liberties as nothing less than spiritual warfare?<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='text-indent:31.45pt;mso-pagination:none'><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Of\nall the founding fathers of this nation, few were as outspoken concerning\nAmerica's establishment as a Christian nation as Patrick Henry.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='text-indent:31.45pt;mso-pagination:none'><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>A\nfirebrand (some have called him a \"radical\") whose personality stood\nin stark contrast to the stern honor of George Washington, the \"refined\nlogic\" of Thomas Jefferson, and the well-tempered but industrious Benjamin\nFranklin, Patrick Henry had a unique genius which stood out in his childhood\nthat made him a conundrum to his family.\u00a0 Bored by farming, his family\nrealized by the time he was 10 years old he would never be a farmer and instead\nsent him to prepare for an academic career.\u00a0 His disinterest in education\nprompted his father to set him up in a business at age 21 which he promptly\nbankrupted.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='text-indent:31.45pt;mso-pagination:none'><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Although\nhe had found his schooling likewise boring and uninteresting, his quick grasp\nof knowledge and the printed word allowed him to peruse law books over a\nsix-week period without actually attending Law School, take AND PASS Virginia's\nBar Exam when he was about 22 years of age.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='text-indent:31.45pt;mso-pagination:none'><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>By\nage 27, he began to become active in the fight for freedom and\nindependence.\u00a0 His penchant for fiery rhetoric and persuasive argument\nbegan to become known, gaining the attention of Virginia's House of Burgesses\nin 1764 when he argued for broad voting rights and women's suffrage.\u00a0 The\nprevious year, in 1763, when arguing the famed Parson's Cause in Hanover\nCounty, Patrick Henry proclaimed that a king who would veto a good and\nnecessary law made by a locally elected representative body was not a father to\nhis people but \"a tyrant who forfeits the allegiance of his\nsubjects.\"<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='text-indent:31.45pt;mso-pagination:none'><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>The\nfollowing year, he was elected to the House of Burgesses, quickly becoming\nknown as its \"radical leader.\"\u00a0 That same year, he proposed and\nargued for his Virginia Stamp Act Resolutions.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='text-indent:31.45pt;mso-pagination:none'><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>For\nthose who still favored an ongoing bond with Great Britain and King George, his\nproposition was nothing less than treasonous; and yet, his arguments were so\npersuasive that five of his resolutions passed the House.\u00a0\u00a0 In 1765,\nhe defended again those resolutions.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='text-indent:31.45pt;mso-pagination:none'><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Quoting\nfrom an article at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, we are told, <b><span\nstyle='color:#00642D'>\"Carried away by the fervor of his own argument, the\nplainly dressed burgess from Louisa County exclaimed that \"Caesar had his\nBrutus, Charles the First his Cromwell, and George the Third...\" At this\npoint, cries of treason rose from all sides, but with hardly a pause, Henry\nneatly \"baffled the charge vociferated\" and won the burgesses for his\ncause. Five of his resolutions approved, the new leader in Virginia politics\nsaddled his lean horse and took the westward road out of Williamsburg. (After\nhis departure, one of the resolutions was overturned.) Henceforth, Patrick Henry\nwas a leader in every protest against British tyranny and in every movement for\ncolonial rights.\"<\/span><\/b><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='text-indent:31.45pt;mso-pagination:none'><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Henry's\nknowledge of Scripture and constant attention to the Word of God made its\nphraseology part of his regular speech, and he often quoted liberally from\nScripture as he made his arguments.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='text-indent:31.45pt;mso-pagination:none'><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>On\nMarch 23, 1775, speaking at St. John's Henrico Parish Church in Richmond,\nVirginia, he gave what was perhaps his most famous, and most often quoted\nspeech.\u00a0 Recognizing that the American colonies were on the brink of war\nwith Great Britain, and realizing that many of the colonists were still\npacifists, he launched into a call for battle.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='text-indent:31.45pt;mso-pagination:none'><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>In\npart, he said, <b><span style='color:#00642D'>\"They tell us, sir, that we\nare weak; unable to cope with so formidable an adversary. But when shall we be\nstronger? Will it be the next week, or the next year? Will it be when we are\ntotally disarmed, and when a British guard shall be stationed in every house?\nShall we gather strength by irresolution and inaction? Shall we acquire the\nmeans of effectual resistance by lying supinely on our backs and hugging the\ndelusive phantom of hope, until our enemies shall have bound us hand and foot?\nSir, we are not weak if we make a proper use of those means which the God of\nnature hath placed in our power. The millions of people, armed in the holy\ncause of liberty, and in such a country as that which we possess, are\ninvincible by any force which our enemy can send against us. Besides, sir, we\nshall not fight our battles alone. There is a just God who presides over the\ndestinies of nations, and who will raise up friends to fight our battles for\nus. <o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='text-indent:31.45pt;mso-pagination:none'><b><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#00642D'>The battle, sir, is not to the strong alone; it is to the\nvigilant, the active, the brave. Besides, sir, we have no election. If we were\nbase enough to desire it, it is now too late to retire from the contest. There\nis no retreat but in submission and slavery! Our chains are forged! Their\nclanking may be heard on the plains of Boston! The war is inevitable \u00ad and let\nit come! I repeat it, sir, let it come.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='text-indent:31.45pt;mso-pagination:none'><b><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#00642D'>It is in vain, sir, to extenuate the matter. Gentlemen may cry,\nPeace, Peace \u00ad but there is no peace. The war is actually begun! The next gale\nthat sweeps from the north will bring to our ears the clash of resounding arms!\nOur brethren are already in the field! Why stand we here idle? What is it that\ngentlemen wish? What would they have? Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to\nbe purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God!
