Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#984806;mso-themecolor:accent6;mso-themeshade:128'>Have you ever seen the\nseries on television that PBS did several years ago, titled: The Adams\nChronicles?<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>It recounts the activites of\nthe Adams family, their faith in God, the trials and tribulations they went\nthrough, and the remarkable successes they experienced during their years\nbefore serving in politics, and the years that followed.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>One of the\nmost remarkable men in our nation's history was John Adams, who served as\nVice-President during the eight years of George Washington's presidency, and\nfour years as President immediately succeeding Washington.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Born in\n1735 in what has since been named Quincy, Massachusetts, he was more of a\njournalist and historian than a politician with a penchant for keeping and\nwriting events in enormous detail.\u00a0 Adams' fellow-signer of the\nDeclaration of Independence, Richard Stockton, later dubbed him as \"The\nAtlas of American Independence.\"\u00a0 The descendant of Henry Adams who\nfled from England in 1636 to escape religious persecution and served under the\nwatch of John Winthrop in Winthrop's Massachusetts Bay Colony, he had a\nspiritual heritage rivaling any early American you could want to name.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>At age 20,\nhaving graduated from Harvard, he began the study of Law, being admitted to the\nMassachusetts Bar three years later.\u00a0 Watching James Otis argue the\nlegality of the Writs of Assistance before the superior court inspired John\nAdams to become a fervent supporter of the cause of the American Colonies.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>At age 29,\nhe married Abigail Smith, the daughter of a Congregational minister.\u00a0 John\nand Abigail Adams began what was to become one of the first leadership\ndynasties in this nation.\u00a0 Their second-born child, John Quincy Adams,\nalso became President of the United States, the sixth president to serve this\nnation.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>John\nAdams' cousin, Samuel Adams, was far more the outspoken and articulate of\nleaders than was John.\u00a0 It was Samuel Adams' leadership and organization\nthat led to the famous Boston Tea Party.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Thought by\nsome historians to be a \"Biblical Unitarian\" (one who rejects\nCalvinism and Predestination and struggles with the concept of the Trinity),\nand by others to be a Congregationalist, John Adams was nonetheless outspoken\nas a believer, and unlike his predecessor, George Washington, was far more\ninclined to quote Scripture and incorporate faith into the public\ndialogue.\u00a0 He once referred to himself as \"a church going\nanimal.\"<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Charles\nFrancis Adams, his grandson and son of John Quincy Adams, catalogued the works\nof John Adams and his writings, publishing John Adams' carefully detailed notes\nand recollections of events for posterity.\u00a0 He also catalogued many of his\ngrandfather's statements declaring his position on matters of faith and\ngovernment.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Here are\njust a few:<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:green'>\"It is religion and morality alone which can establish the\nprinciples upon which freedom can securely stand. The only foundation of a free\nconstitution is pure virtue.\"<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:green'>\"We have no government armed with power capable of contending\nwith human passions unbridled by morality and religion. . . . <u>Our\nconstitution was made only for a moral and religious people<\/u>. It is wholly\ninadequate to the government of any other.\"<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:green'>\"The moment the idea is admitted into society, that property\nis not as sacred as the laws of God, and that there is not a force of law and\npublic justice to protect it, anarchy and tyranny commence. If \"Thou shalt\nnot covet,\" and \"Thou shalt not steal,\" were not commandments of\nHeaven, they must be made inviolable precepts in every society, before it can\nbe civilized or made free.\"<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>He was\nwary of the temptation among religious zealots to wage \"holy wars,\"\nand yet shared a firm conviction with his fellow nation-builders that a faith\nin God was the force for guiding people and essential to public life and\nsociety.\u00a0 As a representative in the Continental Congress, he publicly\ndespised the arguments of those who condoned slavery as a \"Biblical\nright.\"<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Inheriting\ngenerations of his family's distrust of state-sponsored religion, (John Adams\nwas fourth in succession from Henry Adams who fled the persecution of Puritans\nin England) Adams feared government's involvement in religion, considering it a\ncorrupting force against any true faith in God.\u00a0 In his travels to England\nand France -- first on behalf of the Continental Congress, and subsequently\nPresident George Washington -- he observed that \"Ministers who were paid\nby the state and paid by the government didn't pay any attention to their\nparishes. They didn't care about their parishioners. They could have, they sold\ntheir parishes. They sold their jobs and brought in a hireling to do it and\nthey wandered off to live somewhere else and they didn't need to pay attention\nto their parishioners because the parishioners weren't paying them. The state\nwas paying them.\"<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>His\nsuspicion and distrust of state-sponsored religion did not in any way mean,\nhowever, that he felt as a leader in this nation that he was somehow engaging\nthe government in the sponsoring of religion with his expressions of\nfaith.\u00a0 By the same token, Adams considered -- as previously noted -- that\n<b><span style='color:green'>\"it is religion and morality alone which can\nestablish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand.\"<\/span><\/b><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>On April\n12, 1798, with the nation facing a serious economic and political crisis (The\nFrench Revolution was in full bloom.\u00a0 England and France were pirating\nAmerican cargo ships in the Atlantic in an undeclared war on America with\nAmericans being seized and executed, and critically-needed goods and supplies\nbeing blockaded.) John Adams called the nation to prayer and fasting and\nthanksgiving.\u00a0 The following proclamation speaks for itself.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p align=center style='text-align:center'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;\nfont-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";color:maroon'><o:p>\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p align=center style='text-align:center'><b><span style='font-size:16.0pt;\nfont-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";color:maroon'>By the President of the United\nStates of America<\/span><\/b><b><span style='font-size:16.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p align=center style='text-align:center'><b><span style='font-size:18.0pt;\nfont-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";color:maroon'>A PROCLAMATION<\/span><\/b><span\nstyle='font-size:18.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Americana XBdCn BT\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#002060'>\"AS the safety and prosperity of nations ultimately and\nessentially depend on the protection and blessing of Almighty God; and the\nnational acknowledgment of this truth is not only an indispensable duty which\nthe people owe to Him, but a duty whose natural influence is favorable to the\npromotion of that morality and piety, without which social happiness cannot exist,\nnor the blessings of a free government be enjoyed; and as this duty, at all\ntimes incumbent, is so especially in seasons of difficulty and of danger, when\nexisting or threatening calamities, the just judgments of God against prevalent\niniquity are a loud call to repentance and reformation; and as the United\nStates of America are at present placed in a hazardous and afflictive\nsituation, by the unfriendly disposition, conduct and demands of a foreign\npower, evinced by repeated refusals to receive our messengers of reconciliation\nand peace, by depredations on our commerce, and the infliction of injuries on\nvery many of our fellow citizens, while engaged in their lawful business on the\nseas: \u2014Under these considerations it has appeared to me that the duty of\nimploring the mercy and benediction of Heaven on our country, demands at this\ntime a special attention from its inhabitants.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Americana XBdCn BT\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#002060'>I HAVE therefore thought it fit to recommend, that Wednesday,\nthe 9th day of May next be observed throughout the United States, as a day of\nSolemn Humiliation, Fasting and Prayer; That the citizens of these states,\nabstaining on that day from their customary worldly occupations, offer their\ndevout addresses to the Father of Mercies, agreeably to those forms or methods\nwhich they have severally adopted as the most suitable and becoming: That all\nreligious congregations do, with the deepest humility, acknowledge before GOD\nthe manifold sins and transgressions with which we are justly chargeable as\nindividuals and as a nation; beseeching him, at the same time, of his infinite\nGrace, through the Redeemer of the world, freely to remit all our offences, and\nto incline us, by his holy spirit, to that sincere repentance and reformation\nwhich may afford us reason to hope for his inestimable favor and heavenly\nbenediction; That it be made the subject of particular and earnest\nsupplication, that our country may be protected from all the dangers which\nthreaten it; that our civil and religious privileges may be preserved\ninviolate, and perpetuated to the latest generations; that our public councils\nand magistrates may be especially enlightened and directed at this critical\nperiod; that the American people may be united in those bonds of amity and\nmutual confidence, and inspired with that vigor and fortitude by which they\nhave in times past been so highly distinguished, and by which they have\nobtained such invaluable advantages: That the health of the inhabitants of our\nland may be preserved, and their agriculture, commerce, fisheries, arts and\nmanufactures be blessed and prospered: That the principles of genuine piety and\nsound morality may influence the minds and govern the lives of every\ndescription of our citizens; and that the blessings of peace, freedom, and pure\nreligion, may be speedily extended to all the nations of the earth.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Americana XBdCn BT\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#002060'>And finally I recommend, that on the said day; the duties of\nhumiliation and prayer be accompanied by fervent Thanksgiving to the Bestower\nof Every Good Gift, not only for having hitherto protected and preserved the\npeople of these United States in the independent enjoyment of their religious\nand civil freedom, but also for having prospered them in a wonderful progress\nof population, and for conferring on them many and great favours conducive to\nthe happiness and prosperity of a nation.\"<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><b><i><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Given\nunder my hand and seal of the United States of America, at Philadelphia, this\ntwenty-third day of March, in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred\nand ninety-eight, and of the Independence of the said States the twenty-second.<\/span><\/i><\/b><b><span\nstyle='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p align=right style='text-align:right'><b><span style='font-size:26.0pt;\nfont-family:Majestic;color:blue'>John Adams<\/span><\/b><span style='font-size:\n26.0pt;font-family:Majestic'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";color:maroon'>By the President,<br>\nTIMOTHY PICKERING, <i>Secretary of State<\/i><\/span><span style='font-size:13.0pt;\nline-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Did it\nwork to call the nation to prayer?<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Although\nit cost Adams the support of the Federalists and a very narrow defeat for\nre-election in 1800 (the Federalists objected to any kind of peace treaty with\nFrance and England), the English backed off, a peace treaty was signed with\nFrance, and American shipping resumed across the Atlantic without\nhindrance.\u00a0 With church leaders joining in unity before the Lord, and\nAmericans in every state and territory on their knees before God, America's\npeace, safety and prosperity were assured.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>One of the\nfounding fathers of this nation was man whose name is far less known than that\nof George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams or Benjamin Franklin: Roger\nSherman.\u00a0 Nevertheless, his influence and direct involvement in the\naffairs that led to our nation's Declaration of Independence and Constitution\nranked as high, if not higher, than those names with which we are more\nfamiliar.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Roger\nSherman is the only American founding father to place his signature upon all of\nthe great founding documents of our great country; as well as aiding in the\ndrafting of each of these documents; the Articles of Association in 1774; the\nDeclaration of Independence in 1776; the Articles of Confederation in 1781 and\nthe United States Constitution in 1788.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>To quote\nAaron Baldwin, \"He was a man who risked everything that he had to form the\nnew and independent government. He was father of fifteen (15), and his\ncommitment to cause of democracy kept his family on the very brink of financial\nruin during those forming decades.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#002060'>\"Roger Sherman\u2019s father died when he was just a young man\nof twenty, and the responsibility for his siblings and mother passed to him. He\nworked as a cobbler, surveyor, merchant and he was accepted to the Bar of\nLitchfield in 1754, and represented New Milford in the General Assembly the\nfollowing year. He was appointed justice of the peace, and then four years\nlater a justice of the Superior Court of Connecticut. By the age of forty, he\nhad become a successful landowner and businessman, while also integrating\nhimself into the social and political fabric of the New England region. He was\nthen appointed commissary to the Connecticut Troops at the start of the Revolutionary\nWar; this was experience that he later put to great use when he was elected to\nthe Continental Congress in 1774. Sherman was a very active and much respected\nDelegate to the Congress. He served and numerous committees, including the\ncommittee to draft the Declaration of Independence. He served all through the\nwar for Independence. As active as he was in Congress, he simultaneously\nfulfilled his other offices.\"<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Among\nSherman's other offices included that of Minister of the Gospel of Jesus\nChrist, Treasurer of (and active contributor to) The Collegiate School which\nbecame Yale University, Author of several books and articles on Faith and\nRighteousness (including <b><i>A Short Sermon on the Duty of Self-Examination\nPreparatory to Receiving the Lord's Supper<\/i><\/b>), fellow-member of \"The\nSons of Liberty\" and a group some tagged as being \"religiously\nradical\" known as \"New Lights.\"<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Deeply\ninvolved in the \"Great Awakening,\" his mentor and close personal\nfriend was the Rev. Timothy Cutler.\u00a0 Cutler's daughter, Rebecca, had\nmarried William Sherman -- Roger's father -- but died only months later.\u00a0\nWilliam then married Methetable Sweetman Wellington, Roger's mother.\u00a0 The\nties between the Cutler and Sherman families lasted their entire lifetimes.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='text-indent:31.45pt;mso-pagination:none'><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>We\nwill continue this next week.<span
