style='text-indent:31.45pt;mso-pagination:none'><b><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#984806;mso-themecolor:accent6;mso-themeshade:128'>Let me share with you\ntoday about one of the most prolific of our founding fathers.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>In the weeks to come, you will see how much\nthis man was involved in the founding of this nation, and the part he played in\nthe First Great Awakening \u2013 a phenomenal move of God that spanned the colonies\nand influenced so many of our early leaders. <o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p><a name=\"_Hlk33712640\"><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>One\nof the founding fathers of this nation was man whose name is far less known\nthan that of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams or Benjamin\nFranklin: Roger Sherman.\u00a0 Nevertheless, his influence and direct\ninvolvement in the affairs that led to our nation's Declaration of Independence\nand Constitution ranked as high, if not higher, than those names with which we\nare more familiar.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='mso-bookmark:_Hlk33712640'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;\nfont-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Roger Sherman is the only American founding\nfather to place his signature upon all of the great founding documents of our\ngreat country; as well as aiding in the drafting of each of these documents;\nthe Articles of Association in 1774; the Declaration of Independence in 1776;\nthe Articles of Confederation in 1781 and the United States Constitution in\n1788.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='mso-bookmark:_Hlk33712640'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;\nfont-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>To quote Aaron Baldwin, \"He was a man\nwho risked everything that he had to form the new and independent government.\nHe was father of fifteen (15), and his commitment to cause of democracy kept\nhis family on the very brink of financial ruin during those forming decades.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='mso-bookmark:_Hlk33712640'><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;\nfont-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";color:#002060'>\"Roger Sherman\u2019s father\ndied when he was just a young man of twenty, and the responsibility for his\nsiblings and mother passed to him. He worked as a cobbler, surveyor, merchant\nand he was accepted to the Bar of Litchfield in 1754, and represented New\nMilford in the General Assembly the following year. He was appointed justice of\nthe peace, and then four years later a justice of the Superior Court of\nConnecticut. By the age of forty, he had become a successful landowner and\nbusinessman, while also integrating himself into the social and political\nfabric of the New England region. He was then appointed commissary to the\nConnecticut Troops at the start of the Revolutionary War; this was experience\nthat he later put to great use when he was elected to the Continental Congress\nin 1774. Sherman was a very active and much respected Delegate to the Congress.\nHe served and numerous committees, including the committee to draft the Declaration\nof Independence. He served all through the war for Independence. As active as\nhe was in Congress, he simultaneously fulfilled his other offices.\"<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='mso-bookmark:_Hlk33712640'><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;\nfont-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";color:#002060'>Among Sherman's other offices\nincluded that of Minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, Treasurer of (and active\ncontributor to) The Collegiate School which became Yale University, Author of\nseveral books and articles on Faith and Righteousness (including <i>A Short\nSermon on the Duty of Self-Examination Preparatory to Receiving the Lord's\nSupper<\/i>), fellow-member of \"The Sons of Liberty\" and a group some\ntagged as being \"religiously radical\" known as \"New\nLights.\"<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='text-indent:31.45pt;mso-pagination:none'><span\nstyle='mso-bookmark:_Hlk33712640'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:\n115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Deeply involved in the \"Great\nAwakening,\" his mentor and close personal friend was the Rev. Timothy\nCutler.\u00a0 Cutler's daughter, Rebecca, had married William Sherman --\nRoger's father -- but died only months later.\u00a0 William then married\nMethetable Sweetman Wellington, Roger's mother.\u00a0 The ties between the\nCutler and Sherman families lasted their entire lifetimes.<\/span><\/span><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Writers of\nthe period known as \"The Great Awakening\" defined it as such because\nof a growing realization among Christians, and particularly leaders, of the\nneed for Divine Authority as clearly and visibly operational within the body of\nChrist.\u00a0 More and more pastors, church leaders, and even bishops, began to\nrealize that \"Redemption\" and \"Salvation\" must be\npersonally experienced and manifested in truly changed lives.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Roger\nSherman's close friend and spiritual mentor, Timothy Cutler, David Browne,\nSamuel Johnson and a group of four other ministers resigned their posts within\nthe Congregational Church, believing that their church organization had watered\ndown the divinity and authority of the Lord Jesus Christ.\u00a0 The resignation\nof these seven ministers from their posts at The Collegiate School (Yale) the\nday following commencement exercises and graduation in 1722 is considered to be\nthe beginning of \"The Great Awakening.\"\u00a0 Though The Collegiate\nSchool had been established as a means to teach and expand the Gospel of Jesus\nChrist as seen through Puritan ethics, doctrine and practices, Cutler and his\nassociates believed that they were being used to propagate a \"watered-down\nGospel.\"<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Sherman\nbelieved, as did his friends, and expressed to them that <span\nstyle='color:navy'>\"there is only one living and true God - - - That the scriptures\nof the old and new testaments are a revelation from God and a complete rule to\ndirect us how we may glorify and enjoy Him.\"<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>During one\nof his 138 addresses (according to James Madison's personal notes) to the\nContinental Congress, he admonished his fellow delegates thusly, <span\nstyle='color:navy'>\"Let us live no more to ourselves, but to Him who loved\nus, and gave Himself to die for us,\"<\/span> instructing them that their\nlabor to create a national government for America should be a sacred act to,\nand on behalf of, the Lord Jesus Christ.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>It was\nRoger Sherman who proposed what came to be called \"The Great\nCompromise\" (some called it \"The Sherman Compromise.\")\u00a0 The\nessence of his proposal was that Congress should be divided and apportioned\ninto two houses: The House of Representatives,\u00a0\u201d<span style='color:navy'>the\nproportion of suffrage ...... should be according to the respective numbers of\nfree inhabitants\"<\/span>: and the Senate <span style='color:navy'>\"and\nthat in the second branch each state should have one vote.\"<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Although\nthe Constitution was later amended or compromised so that Senators were elected\nby a direct vote of the people rather than appointed as representatives of\ntheir individual state governments, the current makeup of the U.S. Congress is\n-- for the most part -- the result of Roger Sherman's work.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>His\nproposal (and \"Great Compromise\") came during the Constitutional\nConvention on June 28, 1787 when, following near fatal failure of the delegates\nto arrive at a workable agreement for the creation of a Federal Government,\nBenjamin Franklin suggested that Congress should stop and pray.\u00a0 He\nfurther proposed and moved that Congress should never begin any session without\nfirst praying and asking the Lord for divine guidance.\u00a0 Roger Sherman\nquickly seconded the motion.\u00a0 That motion, and second, became standard operating\nprocedure for Congress -- a practice which has continued unabated to this day.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Despite\nhis speech impediment and handicap (he stuttered noticeably, and was not\nregarded as a brilliant orator), he was able to articulate his thoughts and\npurposes in writing to the degree that many of his peers considered Sherman far\nand away the most persuasive of all who argued.\u00a0 Thomas Jefferson had\nextremely high regard for Roger Sherman and once introduced him, saying, <span\nstyle='color:navy'>\"That is Mr. Sherman of Connecticut, a man who never\nsaid a foolish thing in his life.\"<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>It was in\nFebruary, 1776 that Sherman, along with John Adams and George Wythe of\nVirginia, served on the committee responsible to create instructions for the\nembassy headed for Canada. The instructions directed:<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";color:navy'>\"You\nare further to declare that we hold sacred the rights of conscience, and may\npromise to the whole people, solemnly in our name, the free and undisturbed\nexercise of their religion. And ... that all civil rights and the right to hold\noffice were to be extended to persons of any Christian denomination.\"<\/span><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Not long\nafter George Washington was elected the new nation's first President, Roger\nSherman convinced Washington that he should declare a national Thanksgiving Day\nholiday.\u00a0 Washington later wrote (and it is recorded in the Journals of\nCongress), <span style='color:navy'>\"Mr. Sherman justified the practice of\nthanksgiving, on any signal event, not only as a laudable one in itself, but as\nwarranted by a number of precedents in Holy Writ: for instance, the solemn\nthanksgivings and rejoicings which took place in the time of Solomon, after the\nbuilding of the temple, was a case in point. This example, he thought, worthy\nof Christian imitation on the present occasion.\"<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>In 1788,\nRoger Sherman was asked to use his expertise -- both in knowledge of the Lord\nJesus Christ, and in his knowledge of Scripture -- in the revising of the Creed\nof White Haven Congregational Church.\u00a0 Without hesitation, he picked up a\npen and began to write in his own handwriting the following, the first\nstatement of which he often repeated to others:<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:navy'>\"I believe that there is one only living and true God,\nexisting in three persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, the same in\nsubstance equal in power and glory.<br>\n<br>\n\"That the scriptures of the old and new testaments are a revelation from\nGod, and a complete rule to direct us how we may glorify and enjoy him.<br>\n<br>\n\"That God has foreordained whatsoever comes to pass, so as thereby he is\nnot the author or approver of sin.<\/span><\/b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;\nfont-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";color:navy'><br>\n<b><br>\n\"That he creates all things, and preserves and governs all creatures and\nall their actions, in a manner perfectly consistent with the freedom of will in\nmoral agents, and the usefulness of means.<br>\n<br>\n\"That he made man at first perfectly holy, that the first man sinned, and\nas he was the public head of his posterity, they all became sinners in\nconsequence of his first transgression, are wholly indisposed to that which is\ngood and inclined to evil, and on account of sin are liable to all the miseries\nof this life, to death, and to the pains of hell forever.<\/b><br>\n<br>\n<b>\"I believe that God having elected some of mankind to eternal life, did\nsend his own Son to become man, die in the room and stead of sinners and thus\nto lay a foundation for the offer of pardon and salvation to all mankind, so as\nall may be saved who are willing to accept the gospel offer: also by his\nspecial grace and spirit, to regenerate, sanctify and enable to persevere in\nholiness, all who shall be saved; and to procure in consequence of their\nrepentance and faith in himself their justification by virtue of his atonement\nas the only meritorious cause.<br>\n<br>\n\"I believe a visible church to be a congregation of those who make a\ncredible profession of their faith in Christ, and obedience to him, joined by\nthe bond of the covenant....<br>\n<br>\n\"I believe that the souls of believers are at their death made perfectly\nholy, and immediately taken to glory: that at the end of this world there will\nbe a resurrection of the dead, and a final judgment of all mankind, when the\nrighteous shall be publicly acquitted by Christ the Judge and admitted to\neverlasting life and glory, and the wicked be sentenced to everlasting\npunishment.\"<\/b><\/span><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Roger\nSherman was an American Revolutionary, a Patriot, a politician, a jurist, and\nmost of all, an active voice in the body of Christ: one who did all he could to\nspur a national faith in Jesus Christ, irrespective of religious denomination\nor background.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>His\nendeavors, coupled with those of his fellow founding fathers, make crystal\nclear the fact that America was not founded for any other purpose than to\nprovide a place on earth where Christianity would flourish, where the Gospel\nwould have total and unabated freedom: a nation clearly divinely established\nand under God's supreme rule.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>I'd like\nto deviate a bit in our discussion today concerning the American Covenant and talk\nabout two gentlemen, neither of whom served in any political office -- to the\nbest of my knowledge -- and yet greatly influenced the coming together of our\nfounding fathers for the purpose of forming a new nation.\u00a0 Their names\nwere Jonathan Edwards and George Whitfield.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Most folks\n-- if they've ever heard the names of these men -- would never in a million\nyears associate them with politics or the formation of our United States\nConstitution; and indeed, they had no actual part in the discussions that took\nplace between the major figures we normally know as the framers of our\nConstitution.\u00a0 Yet their influence was felt, and their labors inspired our\nfounding fathers more than we perhaps can even imagine.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>We\u2019ve just\ntalked about Roger Sherman, and the part he personally played -- not only in\ninstituting Biblical principles, along with the fundamentals of the Gospel of\nJesus Christ -- in writing, in arguing, in signing into being the four\nprincipal documents that formed this nation as a Constitutional Republic.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>One of\nthose men who greatly influenced Roger Sherman was a preacher by the name of\nJonathan Edwards.\u00a0 Born October 5, 1703, Edwards came from a family and\ngenerations of ministers who taught holiness and relationship with Jesus\nChrist.\u00a0 His mother, also the daughter of a family of ministers (the\nformer Esther Stoddard) was noted for her unusual sensitivities to the Holy\nSpirit, even exhibiting the Gifts of the Holy Spirit (along with speaking in\nother tongues) more than two centuries before the Azusa Street Revival.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Have to\nleave it there for today.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>This is a most \nremarkable story and one we will pick up with next week.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='text-indent:31.45pt;mso-pagination:none'><b><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book
