Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#984806;mso-themecolor:accent6;mso-themeshade:128'>I want to finish up\nwith Daniel Webster today and then move on to a look at Alexander\nHamilton.\u00a0 Yesterday, we finished up his December 1820 speech to the\nMassachusetts Constitutional Convention.\u00a0 Today, let's take a look at an\naddress he made at Dartmouth.\u00a0 <o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/a><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='mso-bookmark:_Hlk34213284'><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;\nfont-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";color:#984806;mso-themecolor:accent6;\nmso-themeshade:128'>This speech must easily have taken an hour or more to\ndeliver, and it would take a week of Coffee Breaks to try and cover the whole\nthing, so let me rather take some extracts from his address -- and address\nwhich clearly denotes his personal convictions and thought processes concerning\nthe Lord and His interaction with mankind.\u00a0\u00a0<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='mso-bookmark:_Hlk34213284'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;\nfont-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Darwin had not yet published his\n\"Origin of the Species,\" but it is clear that the concept of\nevolution had already begun to run amuck among atheists.\u00a0 Webster\nridicules the concept and refutes it with his inestimable logic.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='mso-bookmark:_Hlk34213284'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;\nfont-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Take a look at a small portion of what he\nhad to say:<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='mso-bookmark:_Hlk34213284'><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;\nfont-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";color:#007434'>\"It is an account of the\ngood effects upon our own happiness and the welfare of Mankind, that we are\ncommanded to love God with all our powers and affections.\u00a0 But in order to\nobey this command, it is indispensably necessary that we should form for\nourselves such a character of God as is altogether lovely.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='mso-bookmark:_Hlk34213284'><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;\nfont-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";color:#007434'>\"This character of God\nwe may imperfectly form, from a correct intelligent and enlarged examination and\ncontemplation of his works, as exhibited to our senses on this globe; in which\nwe cannot fail at every glance to discern evidence of his infinite power and\nwisdom.\u00a0 Mankind has in every age been struck with the power of these two\nattributes.\u00a0 But not so with his goodness, the most important attribute of\nall and which essentially constitutes his moral character; without which we\nmight indeed fear and revere, but never love him. <o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n\n<span style='mso-bookmark:_Hlk34213284'><\/span>\n\n<p><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#007434'>\"The belief that this globe existed from all eternity, or\nnever had a beginning; never obtained a foothold in any part of the world, or\nin any age.\u00a0 Even the infidel writer, of modern times, however, in the\npride of argument they may have asserted it but believed or not, for they could\nnot help perceiving that if mankind with their inherently intellectual powers,\nand natural capacities for improvement, had inhabited this Earth for millions\nof years, the present inhabitants would not only be vastly more intelligent\nthan we now find them, but there would be vestiges of the former races, to be\nfound in every inhabitable part of the Globe.\u00a0 Floods and Earthquakes\nnotwithstanding; Unless we adopt Lord Manboddo's supposition that Mankind were\noriginally Monkeys, it is impossible to admit the idea that they could have\nexisted millions of years without making more discoveries & improvements\nthan the early histories of nations warrant us to believe they had done. <o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#007434'>\"The belief in an uncreated, self existent intelligent\nfirst cause, takes possession of our minds whether we will or not, because if\nMan could not create himself nothing else could; and matter, if it were not\nexternal could produce nothing but matter.\u00a0 It could never produce\nthought, nor free will, nor consciousness. <o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#007434'>\"There must have been therefore, a time when this globe and\nits inhabitants did not exist. The question then arises, what gave it\nexistence?\u00a0 We answer God, the great first cause of all things. What is\nGod?\u00a0 We know not.\u00a0 We know him only through his creation and his\nrevelation.\u00a0 What do these teach us?\u00a0 They teach us, first this -\nincomprehensible power, next his infinite Mind, and lastly his universal\nbenevolence - or Goodness.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#007434'>These terms express all that can know or believe of him; his\nomnipresence is included in the Idea of infinite power; his omniscience in that\nof infinite wisdom, and his justice, Mercy, Holiness and truth in that of\ninfinite benevolence or Love.\u00a0 The whole of his attributes may therefore\nbe expressed in three words Power, Wisdom and Goodness and these are inherent\nself existence eternal and unchangeable.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#007434'>\"We can only reason from what we know and believe; our\nknowledge is extremely limited, and our belief often unsound.\u00a0 It is\ntherefore with great humility I venture to ask the question, What gave birth to\nCreation?\u00a0 Which of the qualities that we ascribe to the Universal father,\ncould have induced this Infinitely Holy and consequently Infinitely happy\nbeing, to create any thing?\u00a0 So this we are forced to answer - Infinite\nGoodness. Wisdom alone may contrive; Power alone may create but neither, alone,\nor united, would suggest or prompt to action; because neither can desire,\nneither can furnish <em><span style='font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>motive<\/span><\/em>\nfor itself.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#007434'>The first step in Creation was therefore made by infinite\nbenevolence.\u00a0 Infinite Wisdom next devised the plan to satisfy the wishes\nof benevolence, and infinite power, executed the work without defect so that\nthe divine mind when contemplating the principles and structure of its glorious\nwork could truly say, - It is Good.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#007434'>\"How shall we cultivate and strengthen this glorious\nprinciple of Love?\u00a0 By endeavoring to obey the first and great\ncommandment.\u00a0 But do we have no power over our love?\u00a0 Love is an\neffect resulting from a cause.\u00a0 True, but happily for us, Jesus Christ has\nfurnished us with causes in abundance.\u00a0 The Apostle John says, \"We\nlove God, because He <em><span style='font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>first<\/span><\/em>\nloved us.\"<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#007434'>This is the only true and natural foundation of love for God -\nin Man. Love as necessarily begets love, as Hatred begets hatred.\u00a0 Our\ntask is easy!\u00a0 Our duty a pleasure!\u00a0 We have only to look around to\nscrutinize - to reflect.\u00a0 The proofs of God's love to us are presented at\nevery glance are inhaled with every breath.\u00a0 As the Psalmist David says,\n\"His mercies are over all his works.\"<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#007434'>\"But how shall we reconcile contradictory facts? God is\ngood, and yet man is not happy. He is incessantly looking beyond his\npossessions; forever coveting some unenjoyed good and trampling upon present\nblessings.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#007434'>\"This difficult problem admits of but one solution but it\nis a solution which unfolds the greatest and most important truth in nature; a\ntruth that reconciles Man to his maker, and to the world; a truth which solves\nall mysteries and harmonizes all apparent contradictions. <o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#007434'>\"This glorious truth may be expressed in three words <em><span\nstyle='font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Man is Immortal!<\/span><\/em>\u00a0\u00a0\nHis body is but his habitation; his undying intellectual is himself and his\nmoral feelings & capacity constitute his essence, and his worth. <o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#007434'>\"These spiritual qualities in Man, fit him for eternity;\nevery other animal soon arrives at a fixed degree of perfection, of body and\nmind beyond which it cannot pass; But where can you fix limits to the reasoning\npower; to the very principle of intelligence? which like gravitation grows\nstronger and stronger as the material upon which it acts accumulates.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#007434'>\"In this view of human nature, and its intellectual, its\nmoral, its spiritual endowments, we may justly say, If there be no resurrection\n(through Christ) into life eternal, we of all creatures, are the most\nmiserable.\u00a0 Our wonderful powers are given us in vain; and our constant\nendeavors to attain happiness are also vain.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#007434'>But thanks be to God, whose nature is love, Whose wisdom is\ninfinite, who saw before creation the end & operation of His work, with\nwhom nothing is uncertain, nothing contingent, He, has given us assurances both\ninternal and external, that we shall all pass through those states or processes\nof purification which are necessary, to fit us, for the full enjoyment of the\nperfectly happy existence He originally designed for us, whose pain or sorrow\nshall be known no man for ever.\u00a0 Where discontent shall be swallowed up in\nBliss.\"<\/span><\/b><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#984806;mso-themecolor:accent6;mso-themeshade:128'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Webster's\nthought processes are clearly a product of logic -- and his logic IS\nfascinating -- but what interests me the most in his commentary is the fact\nthat this is a man who invested his life in the defense of a Constitution for\nthese United States, who labored long and hard to establish right principles\nand foundations upon which future generations could build.\u00a0 We are blessed\nto have had this man among our nation's founding fathers.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>\u00a0Let's\ntalk for a bit about Alexander Hamilton.\u00a0 For a man who had such a short\nlife with such questionable beginnings, Hamilton used his life to literally\nchange the world of his day and influence the world economy even to the\npresent.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Born on\nthe island of Nevis in the British West Indies on January 11, 1755 of a union\nbetween James Hamilton (a Scottish merchant) and Rachael Fawcette Levine (of\nFrench Huguenot descent), the Law saw his birth as illegitimate.\u00a0 Rachael\nhad been married to a Danish businessman at a very early age; and for reasons\nunknown, the court ordered her divorce from him.\u00a0 Under Danish Law,\nRachael was forbidden to remarry; and her union with James Hamilton could never\nbe legalized.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Before\nAlexander turned 13 years of age, his mother died.\u00a0 His father had gone\nbankrupt, and Alexander was compelled to go to work as a clerk and apprentice\nat the counting house of Nicholas Cruger and David Beekman.\u00a0 It may have\nbeen tragic circumstances that compelled him to go to work at such a young age,\nbut it was a Godsend in disguise.\u00a0 When Alexander was age 15, Cruger found\nit necessary to leave on other business and left him in charge.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>It had\nonly been a year since Alexander Hamilton (now age 14) had written a note to a\nfriend by the name of Edward Stevens, in which he said, \"my ambition is\nprevalent, so that I contemn the groveling condition of a clerk or the like \u2026\nand would willingly risk my life, though not my character, to exalt my\nstation.\"<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Without\nhaving to do either, he found the opportunity thrust upon him.\u00a0 Growing up\nin near-poverty, educational opportunities had been scarce, but his mother's\nFrench upbringing made it possible for him to learn the language; and indeed he\nlearned it well.\u00a0 The devastating hurricane of August 30, 1772 that struck\nthe islands and all but wiped out the city of Christiansted provided an\nopportunity for Alexander that changed his life forever.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Despite\nhis youth, he had become very articulate in expressing himself.\u00a0 Following\nthe hurricane event, he wrote a complete description of the devastation for the\nRoyal Danish-American Gazette.\u00a0 Family friends were extremely impressed\nwith his writing and decided to fund the opportunity for him to be educated at\na grammar school in Elizabethtown, New Jersey where he enrolled in the fall of\n1772.\u00a0 He graduated one year later and immediately entered King's College\nin New York City.\u00a0 Again, he graduated college after only one year with\nhis Bachelor of Arts degree.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>The War of\nIndependence was just beginning and Alexander Hamilton felt a very keen loyalty\nto the colonists.\u00a0 It was on the morning of July 6, 1774 at a mass meeting\nin the fields of New York City that he made an absolutely sensational speech\nattacking British policies.\u00a0 At the same time he began writing a series of\nletters for John Holt's <u>New York Journal<\/u>.\u00a0 <o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>While at\nKing's College, he had joined a patriot volunteer band known as \"the\nCorsicans.\"\u00a0 Every morning before classes began, they would\ndrill.\u00a0 These exercises fueled Alexander's military ambitions and\ndesires.\u00a0 Thus, one August morning in 1775, the \"Corsicans\"\nparticipated in a raid to seize the cannon from the local Battery.\u00a0\u00a0\nOn March 14, 1776, less than 90 days before the Declaration of Independence was\nset forth, he was commissioned captain of a company of artillery set up by the New\nYork Providential Congress.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>In August\nof that year, his company participated in the Battle of Long Island; and in\nOctober his battery guarded Chatterton's Hill while protecting the withdrawal\nof General William Smallwood's militia.\u00a0 His military feats continued\neventually bringing him to the attention of General Nathaniel Greene; and\nsubsequently to George Washington.\u00a0 Just prior to his 22nd birthday, in\nMarch of 1777, he joined Washington's personal staff and was commissioned with\nthe rank of Lieutenant Colonel. <o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";color:#192763'>Here\nwas a man whose lifespan totaled only 49 years between his birth and his death\nfrom a pistol shot while dueling Aaron Burr, who was serving as Vice-President\nunder Thomas Jefferson.\u00a0 Yet his life, the decisions and choices he made,\nstill play a huge part in our nation's economy and system today more than two\nhundred years after his death.<\/span><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";color:#192763'>If\nyou recall, we were talkingabout the young Alexander Hamilton and his\nappointment to General George Washington's staff in March of 1777.\u00a0\nHamilton had a natural affinity for the military, but his humble and meager\nbeginnings caused him to thirst for recognition.\u00a0 He was an ambitious man,\nand the military was a likely place for his God-given analytical and\nmathematical genius.\u00a0 The Battle of Monmouth on June 28, 1778 afforded him\nan opportunity to show his leadership skills and personal bravery.<\/span><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";color:#192763'>He\ndistinguished himself in battle in the eyes of his commanding general in the\nbattles of Brandywine and Germantown.\u00a0 Alexander felt such a strong\naffection and attachment to George Washington that when GW reprimanded him\nslightly for his hotheaded ness in a quarrel with General Charles Lee in\nFebruary of 1781, he became concerned over how his actions might affect the\ngeneral's reputation and resigned as Washington's Aide-de-Camp.\u00a0\nWashington wasn't about to lose the services of someone whose personal\nintegrity and valor he valued;
