Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#984806;mso-themecolor:accent6;mso-themeshade:128'>As you will see in\ntoday\u2019s discussions, founding father and signer of the Declaration of\nIndependence, Benjamin Rush, was a genius of the highest order.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Gifted by God, he put those gifts to work and\nblessed both this nation and other nations as well.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>The signs\nand symbols, the Scripture references that abound in our founding fathers'\ncommentaries, and their labors of love and covenant to establish this great\nnation make abundantly clear that they purposed to have \"one nation under\nGod, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.\"<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>One of\nthose Pennsylvania citizens who grew up under that Charter of Liberties\nestablished by William Penn was Benjamin Rush.\u00a0 Born December 24, 1745 in\nByberry, about 12 miles from Philadelphia, Rush was another example of the\ngeniuses our nation was turning out under the spiritual climate and atmosphere\nof colonial governments that clearly honored and recognized God the Father and\nthe Lord Jesus Christ as the head and author of all government.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Like\nPatrick Henry, Roger Sherman, Jonathan Edwards, John Jay, and a host of other\nAmericans of that era, Benjamin Rush was one who grew up under Christian\ntutelage.\u00a0 His father died when he was six years old, and he was sent to\nlive with his uncle, Rev. Samuel Finley, who ran West Nottingham Academy.\u00a0\nHe graduated at age 15 with his Bachelor of Arts degree and planned to study\nLaw.\u00a0 He had a natural affinity for medical studies, however, and a grant\nfrom Benjamin Franklin afforded him the opportunity to study medicine at the University\nof Edinburgh.\u00a0 He returned to Philadelphia in 1769 where -- at age <st1:bcv_smarttag\nw:st=\"on\">24 -<\/st1:bcv_smarttag>- he was elected Professor of Chemistry in the\ncity medical college.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>From this\npoint forward in his life, Benjamin Rush's biography reads like a composite of\nmany of his peers.\u00a0 In 1771 he published essays on slavery, temperance,\nand health, and in 1774 he delivered the annual oration before the\nPhilosophical society on the \" Natural History of Medicine among the\nIndians of North America.\" He early engaged in pre-Revolutionary movements\nand wrote constantly for the press on colonial rights. <o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>He was a\nmember of the provincial conference of Pennsylvania, and chairman of the\ncommittee that reported that it had become expedient for Congress to declare\nindependence, and Surgeon to the Pennsylvania Navy from September 17, 1775, to\nJuly 1, 1776. He was then elected to Congress, and on <st1:bcv_smarttag w:st=\"on\">4\n July, 1776<\/st1:bcv_smarttag>, signed the Declaration of Independence.\u00a0\nThat same year, Rush married Julia Stockton, a daughter of Richard Stockton;\nand was appointed surgeon-general of the middle department of the Navy in\nApril, 1777.\u00a0 That July he became Physician-General for the Continental\nArmies under George Washington.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Rush was\n26 when he married then-sixteen-year-old Julia Stockton.\u00a0 Their marriage\nwas considered a marriage of \"beloveds\" lasting for 42 years before\nBenjamin Rush died.\u00a0 The love and care they displayed for one another was\na constant source of comment in Philadelphia's society.\u00a0 They had thirteen\nchildren together, four of whom died before their parents, nine who outlived\nthem, and two whose lives gained enduring distinction -- one as a diplomat, the\nother as a physician.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Serving as\nPhysician-General, he was in constant attendance of the wounded during the\nbattles of Trenton, Princeton, Brandywine and Germantown.\u00a0 During the\nsicknesses that almost crippled Washington's armies at Valley Forge, he\nremained on duty almost to the detriment of his own healthy.\u00a0 Yet he found\nthe time to write four rather long letters to the people of Pennsylvania, in\nwhich he made known his very strong objections to the Articles of Confederation\nof 1776, urging a revision on the grounds that giving legislative powers to a\nsingle house would prove highly dangerous.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>In\nFebruary of 1778, he resigned his post as Physician-General to make public his\nopposition to the way in which the wounded soldiers were being cared for, and\nto highlight the lack of hospital stores.\u00a0 His resignation was not looked\nupon kindly by George Washington, but Rush and Washington had never really had\nwarm relations between themselves.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>The\nNational Archives in Washington, DC tell us that Benjamin Rush \"further\nrefused compensation for his services to the Continental Armies, despite the\nfact that he was nearly broke financially.\u00a0 He was a founder of Dickinson\ncollege and the Philadelphia dispensary, and was largely interested in the\nestablishment of Public schools, concerning which he published an address, and\nin the founding of the College of Physicians, of which he was one of the first\ncensors. He was a member of the State convention that ratified the Constitution\nof the United States in 1787, and of that for forming a state constitution in\nthe same year, in which he endeavored to procure the incorporation of his views\non Public schools, and a Penal code on which he had previously written essays.\nAfter that service he retired from political life.\"<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";color:#192763'>Appleton's\nAmerican Biography reads that, \"<b>He was a member of nearly every\nmedical, literary, and benevolent institution in (his country), and of many\nforeign societies, and for his replies to their queries on the subject of\nyellow fever received a medal from the king of Prussia in 1805, and gifts from\nother crowned heads, He succeeded Benjamin Franklin as president of the\nPennsylvania society for the abolition of slavery, was president of the\nPhiladelphia medical society, vice-president and <u>a founder of the\nPhiladelphia Bible Society*, advocating the use of the Scriptures as a text\u00adbook\nin the public schools<\/u>, an originator of the American philosophical society,\nof which he was a vice-president in 1799-1800. <o:p><\/o:p><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#192763'>\u201cHe taught, more clearly than any other physician of his day, to\ndistinguish diseases and their effects, gave great impulse to the study of\nmedicine in this country, and made Philadelphia the centre of that science in\nthe United States, more than 2,250 students having attended his lectures during\nhis professorship in the Medical College of Philadelphia. Yale gave him the\ndegree of LL. D. in 1812.\"\u00a0 <\/span><\/b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;\nfont-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>(Emphasis, mine) (*The Philadelphia Bible\nSociety was America's very first Bible Society.)<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Benjamin\nRush was considered impulsive and indiscreet (perhaps more than anything else\nbecause of some ill-considered remarks made about George Washington during the\nwinter in Valley Forge**), but his zeal for the public good was limitless. He\ntaught at the College of Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania. He\nattacked slavery and strong drink, classical education and tobacco, carrying on\na one-man crusade and undoubtedly spending himself in too many causes.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>In 1793,\nDr. Rush was credited with curing the epidemic of yellow fever in\nPhiladelphia.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>The King of Prussia, the\nQueen of Eritrea, and the Emperor of Russia honored him for his replies to\ntheir questions on yellow fever.\u00a0 Despite his incredible record of\nsuccesses, Rush never convinced his scientific friend, Thomas Jefferson, that\nthe doctors of their time did more good than ill.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>As many\ngood generals often have happen to them, Washington suffered a series of defeats\nand setbacks during the War of Independence.\u00a0 It was during this period in\nWashington's leadership that Rush was convinced by other generals that\nWashington needed to be removed as Commander-in-Chief, and he joined their\ncampaign for his removal.\u00a0 By his own account, it was the worst mistake of\nhis life.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>He later\nwrote John Adams, <b><span style='color:#007434'>\"He [Washington] was the\nhighly favored instrument (of God) whose patriotism and name contributed\ngreatly to the establishment of the independence of the United States.\"<\/span><\/b><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>During the\nConstitutional Conventions, he argued, <b><span style='color:#007434'>\"Unless\nwe put Medical Freedom into the Constitution, the time will come when medicine\nwill organize into an undercover dictatorship . . . to restrict the art of\nhealing to one class of men, and deny equal privilege to others, will be to\nconstitute the Bastille of Medical Science. All such laws are un-American and\ndespotic and have no place in a Republic ... The Constitution of this Republic\nshould make special privilege for Medical Freedom as well as Religious\nFreedom.\"<\/span><\/b><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>To say the\nleast, his argument -- though at the time it made little headway -- has proved\nto be prophetic.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>He was far\nahead of his time in the treatment of psychiatric disorders and is regarded\ntoday as both the \"Father of American Medicine\" and the \"Father\nof American Psychiatry.\"\u00a0 The emblem of the American Psychiatric\nSociety bears his portrait.\u00a0 He was the author of numerous studies on\naddiction, identifying many of the causes of addiction -- along with\n\"causal agents\" -- and finally concluded near the end of his life\nthat \"abstinence is the only cure for alcohol addiction.\"<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><a name=\"_GoBack\"><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>But\nBenjamin Rush was known for much more than medicine and psychiatry.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>He is also known as \u201cThe Father of Public\nSchools Under the Constitution.\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n\n<span style='mso-bookmark:_GoBack'><\/span>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;\nline-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>His proposals for public\neducation would bring chills to the ACLU today.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\n<\/span>They\u2019d like nothing better than to erase all mention of Benjamin Rush\nwhen it comes to our educational system.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\n<\/span>He well knew what a good education was all about \u2013 as we can easily see\nfrom his biographical background.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";color:#192763'>Benjamin\nRush's proposals for public education would bring chills to the ACLU\ntoday.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span style='font-size:\n13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>They\u2019d like nothing better than to\nerase all mention of Benjamin Rush when it comes to our educational\nsystem.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>He well knew what a good\neducation was all about \u2013 as we can easily see from his biographical\nbackground. <o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>For a guy\nwho was so into medicine and it studies, Benjamin Rush was also deeply involved\nin education.\u00a0 Oddly and uniquely enough, besides being known as \"The\nFather of American Medicine,\" and \"The Father of American\nPsychiatry,\" he is also known as \"The Father of Public Schools Under\nthe Constitution.\"\u00a0 He was the first to advance the idea of free\npublic schools, and also a pioneer in the opportunity for women's education. He\nhelped Abigail Adam's (John Adam's wife) dream become a reality by establishing\nthe <i>Young Ladies Academy of Philadelphia<\/i>, one of America's first\neducational institutions for women.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>He wrote\ntextbooks, formed curriculum plans, crafted educational policies, and helped establish\nfive universities and colleges. As the founder of public education in America,\nlisten to his definition of what education should contain:<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#007434'>\"The only foundation for a useful education in a republic\nis to be laid in religion. Without this there can be no virtue, and without\nvirtue there can be no liberty.\"<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>In March\n28, 1787 when Dr. Benjamin Rush proposed his plan for public education in\nAmerica he wrote<span style='color:#192763'>:<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#007434'>\"Let the children who are sent to those schools be taught\nto read and write - - - (and a)bove all, let both sexes be carefully instructed\nin the principles and obligations of the Christian religion. This is the most\nessential part of education.\"<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Referring\nto the various levels of education he added, \"It will be necessary to\nconnect all these (academic) branches of education with regular instruction in\nthe Christian religion.\"<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>We've\nalready noted that he founded the first Bible Society in America.\u00a0 He also\nhelped found \"The First Day Society\" which was the beginning of\nSunday Schools across America.\u00a0 Interestingly, Francis Scott Key -- the\nauthor of <i>The Star Spangled Banner<\/i> -- later became the Vice President of\nthe American Sunday School Union.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>(More\non him in a moment.)<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>In 1791\nDr. Rush wrote a lengthy pamphlet entitled \"A Defense of the Use of the Bible\nas a Schoolbook.Here is how that writing began:<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#007434'>\"It is now several months since I promised to give you my\nreasons for preferring the Bible as a schoolbook to all other compositions.\nBefore I state my arguments, I shall assume the five following propositions:<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#007434'>I . That Christianity is the only true and perfect religion; and\nthat in proportion as mankind adopts its principles and obeys its precepts,\nthey will be wise and happy.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#007434'>2. That a better knowledge of this religion is to be acquired by\nreading the Bible than in any other way.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#007434'>3. That the Bible contains more knowledge necessary to man in\nhis present state than any other book in the world.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#007434'>4. That knowledge is most durable, and religious instruction\nmost useful, when imparted in early life.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#007434'>5.
