Antiqua\",\"serif\";color:#984806;mso-themecolor:accent6;mso-themeshade:\r\n128'><o:p>\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\r\ncolor:#640000'>Today we will talk briefly about Abraham Lincoln; and then we\r\nwill -- over the next few discussions -- delve into the process that has\r\nunfolded over the past 50 years or so in which our covenantal rights as\r\nAmericans have been stolen, and the emerging reversal of that process which has\r\ntaken place in the past few years.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Abraham\r\nLincoln, 16th President of the United States (1861 - 1865), has been both\r\npraised and vilified: either as one of the greatest presidents this nation has\r\never had, or as one of the worst -- all subject, of course, to the biases of\r\nthose praising or criticizing.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Constitutional\r\npurists consider Lincoln despicable because he suspended the writ of habeas\r\ncorpus (a nice legal term for the body of law -- the Constitution, in this\r\ncase).\u00a0 The writ provided the freedom for an accused individual to be\r\nbrought before a court of law, examined under the law, and either charged for\r\ncommitting some violation of law, or released because no proof of a violation\r\nhad been committed.\u00a0<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Beyond\r\nsuspending the writ of habeas corpus, Lincoln also ordered the arrest of some\r\n18,000 opponents including public officials and newspaper publishers, and\r\noverstepped the bounds of executive authority and power as established in the\r\nConstitution -- particularly in the area of States' Rights.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>That said,\r\nAbraham Lincoln saw this nation's future, and our unity as \"one nation\r\nunder God\" as his overriding responsibility.\u00a0 He had a vision for\r\nthis nation's potential as a force for righteousness in the world, and saw the\r\nabomination of slavery as a sin against God, and a blight that would bring a\r\ncurse upon America, quickly bringing our nation's existence to an end.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>During the\r\nAmerican Civil War, on November 19, 1863, four and a half months after the\r\nBattle of Gettysburg, Abraham Lincoln gave what is easily the most famous and\r\nmost remembered speech of his lifetime: the Gettysburg Address.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:.5in'><b><i><span style='font-size:13.0pt;\r\nline-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";color:#00863D'>Four score\r\nand seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation,\r\nconceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created\r\nequal.<\/span><\/i><\/b><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;\r\nfont-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";color:#00863D'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:.5in'><b><i><span style='font-size:13.0pt;\r\nline-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";color:#00863D'>Now we are\r\nengaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation, so\r\nconceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field\r\nof that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final\r\nresting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live.\r\nIt is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.<\/span><\/i><\/b><b><span\r\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\r\ncolor:#00863D'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:.5in'><b><i><span style='font-size:13.0pt;\r\nline-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";color:#00863D'>But, in a\r\nlarger sense, we can not dedicate\u2014we can not consecrate\u2014we can not hallow\u2014this\r\nground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated\r\nit, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor\r\nlong remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It\r\nis for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which\r\nthey who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be\r\nhere dedicated to the great task remaining before us \u2014 that from these honored\r\ndead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full\r\nmeasure of devotion \u2014 that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not\r\nhave died in vain \u2014 that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of\r\nfreedom \u2014 and that government of the people, by the people, for the people,\r\nshall not perish from the earth.<\/span><\/i><\/b><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;\r\nline-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";color:#00863D'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>In the\r\ndays that followed his delivery of the Gettysburg Address, in 1863, with the\r\nnation embroiled in war and dark shadows cast on the prospect of peace, President\r\nLincoln revived a tradition of thankfulness at a time when there seem little to\r\nbe grateful for.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>As Tony\r\nPerkins (of Family Research Council) put it, <b><span style='color:#C00000'>\"<i>As\r\nhe walked among the shallow graves at Gettysburg, mourning the thousands who\r\nfell, President Lincoln asked his countrymen to lay down their arms and pray.\r\nAfter delivering his famous battlefield address, Lincoln reminded the people\r\nthat although they were divided by many things, they were still united by the\r\nAmerican ideal. There, in Gettysburg, Lincoln issued a Thanksgiving\r\nproclamation, setting aside one November day for people of the North and South\r\nto join together, and with one voice offer their praise and gratitude to God.\r\nThe country, though shattered by war and broken in spirit, would observe its\r\nfirst Thanksgiving since the great Revolution.<\/i><\/span><\/b><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Thus,\r\nAbraham Lincoln penned in part,\u00a0<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:.5in'><b><i><span style='font-size:13.0pt;\r\nline-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";color:#00B050'>\"In the\r\nmidst of a civil war of unequaled magnitude and severity... order has been\r\nmaintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere,\r\nexcept in the theater of military conflict...<\/span><\/i><\/b><b><span\r\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\r\ncolor:#00B050'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:.5in'><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;\r\nline-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";color:#00B050'>\u00a0<i>\"Needful\r\ndiversions of wealth and of strength from the fields of peaceful industry to\r\nthe national defense have not arrested the plow, the shuttle, or the ship...\r\nnotwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege, and the\r\nbattlefield; and the country, rejoicing in the consciousness of augmented\r\nstrength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years with large\r\nincrease of freedom.<\/i><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:.5in'><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;\r\nline-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";color:#00B050'>\u00a0<i>\"No\r\nhuman counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great\r\nthings. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God... It has seemed to me\r\nfit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently, and gratefully\r\nacknowledged, as with one heart and one voice, by the whole American people... <o:p><\/o:p><\/i><\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:.5in'><b><i><span style='font-size:13.0pt;\r\nline-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";color:#00B050'>\u201cI do\r\ntherefore invite my fellow-citizens in every part of the United States, and\r\nalso those who are in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday\r\nof November next as a day of thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father\r\nwho dwelleth in the heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the\r\nascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings they\r\ndo also... fervently implore the imposition of the Almighty hand to heal the\r\nwounds of the nation and to restore it, as soon as may be consistent with the\r\ndivine purpose.\"<\/span><\/i><\/b><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;\r\nline-height:115%;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";color:#00B050'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Lincoln\r\nsaw his responsibility before God as President of this nation as superseding\r\nthe Constitution (if only on a very temporary basis); and in the pursuit of\r\nfulfilling that responsibility, he first declared an end to slavery within the\r\nConfederate states through the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863.\u00a0 In\r\n1865, he secured passage of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution,\r\nguaranteeing the permanent abolition of slavery.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>He took\r\npersonal interest, involvement and attention to the Reconstruction, seeking to\r\nquickly reunite Americans under a liberal and generous policy of\r\nreconciliation.\u00a0 Lincoln was a leader among leaders, and he was able to\r\ndefuse many of the heated emotional disagreements within his Republican Party\r\nby bringing virtually every faction of the party into his cabinet.\u00a0 His\r\nleadership and the personal quality of his integrity and character came into\r\nplay as he handled the border slave states in 1861.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Despite\r\nhis overstepping of Constitutional powers during the Civil War, he was\r\nre-elected to the Presidency by a popular vote margin of 55% to 45%, and and\r\nElectoral College vote margin of 91% to 9%.\u00a0 Politicos of the day widely\r\nassumed that because of the huge loss of life during the Civil War, Lincoln\r\nwould easily lose the vote of soldiers.\u00a0 In fact, just over 70% of all\r\nthose soldiers who voted cast their votes for Abraham Lincoln.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>History\r\nhas shown in retrospect that Lincoln made the right decisions.\u00a0 His\r\nreverence for the Lord and his vision for what America could and would be\r\nprompted him to make the following speech on July 4th, 1864.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><b><i><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\r\ncolor:#00863D'>\"These communities, by their representatives in old\r\nIndependence Hall, said to the whole world of men: \u201cWe hold these truths to be\r\nself-evident: that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their\r\nCreator with certain inalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty,\r\nand the pursuit of happiness.\u201d . . . They established these great self-evident\r\ntruths that . . . their posterity might look up again to the Declaration of\r\nIndependence and take courage to renew that battle which their fathers began,\r\nso that truth and justice and mercy and all the humane and Christian virtues\r\nmight not be extinguished from the land. . . . Now, my countrymen, if you have\r\nbeen taught doctrines conflicting with the great landmarks of the Declaration\r\nof Independence . . . let me entreat you to come back. . . . Come back to the\r\ntruths that are in the Declaration of Independence.\"<\/span><\/i><\/b><b><span\r\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";color:#00863D'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>It was\r\nfitting, therefore, that President Abraham Lincoln invited Rev. Henry Highland\r\nGarnet, a black Presbyterian pastor, to speak in the church services (which\r\nwere regularly held) in Congress on February 12, 1865 (just barely two months\r\nbefore he was assassinated at Ford's Theater).\u00a0 An estimated 2,000 people\r\nattended that church service in the House of Representatives.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Historians\r\nhave labeled George Washington as \"the Father of our Country.\"\u00a0\r\nAbraham Lincoln's first name (after Abraham of old) meant \"Father of Many\r\nNations,\" but because of his role in preserving our national unity,\r\nhistorians have labeled him instead \"the Redeemer President.\"<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>And indeed\r\ndid Abraham Lincoln do just that: redeem this nation from destruction by\r\npreventing those eleven southern states to secede and form a separate,\r\nslave-ridden country, dooming forever our status as \"One Nation Under\r\nGod.\"<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>That said,\r\nlet's talk about someone whose name is synonymous with education and learning,\r\nand someone whose name is likely more used today than even that of George\r\nWashington.\u00a0 We're talking, of course, about Daniel Webster, whose name is\r\non the overwhelming majority of the dictionaries used in schools and\r\ninstitutions of higher learning.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Born\r\nJanuary 18, 1782 in Salisbury, New Hampshire, Daniel Webster was a skinny lad\r\nwho had a personal terror of public speaking.\u00a0 Funny thing.\u00a0 For a\r\nfellow who had such a fear of facing the public, he sure overcame it!<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>The son of\r\nrather poor parents, Ebenezer and Abigail Webster, Daniel began to show promise\r\nof exceptional brilliance even at an early age.\u00a0 In recognition of his\r\nservice in the French and Indian War, Daniel's father was granted a small\r\nparcel of land in New Hampshire which he industriously and effectively\r\nfarmed.\u00a0 It provided enough of an income to the family such that Ebenezer\r\nand Abigail decided to sacrifice any extras for several years so that Daniel\r\ncould be privately tutored -- even before he reached the normal age to begin\r\nhis public education.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Daniel\r\nWebster had a unique talent.\u00a0 He was born with, and even improved upon, a\r\nphotographic memory.\u00a0 He had the ability to see something just once and\r\nretain it to the finest detail in memory.\u00a0\u00a0<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>While\r\nstill young, his parents sent him off to Philips Exeter Academy for nine\r\nmonths.\u00a0 The academic brilliance he demonstrated earned him the\r\nopportunity to attend Dartmouth College where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa just\r\nafter his 19th birthday in 1801.\u00a0 Prompted by classmates and instructors,\r\nhe began using his memory skills while still at Dartmouth to begin writing\r\nspeeches for others.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Invited to\r\njoin the United Fraternity Literary Society, he overcame his fear of public\r\nspeaking sufficiently that he began to engage in public debate.\u00a0 Webster's\r\nobvious genius for memorization was an enormous help in recalling precise detail,\r\nand he put it to good use in public speeches.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>So skilled\r\ndid he become at public speaking that he was invited to deliver Hanover's\r\nIndependence Day oration on July 4th of 1801.\u00a0 It was only natural,\r\ntherefore, that he would be invited to apprentice as a lawyer.\u00a0 In 1805,\r\nDaniel Webster opened his first law office in Boscawen, New Hampshire, and two\r\nyears later turned it over to his father (who prospered in some measure as a\r\nresult of his son's prominence) when he opened another office in Portsmouth.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>The following\r\nyear, at age 26, he married Grace Fletcher.\u00a0 They had one son together,\r\nCharles Webster.\u00a0 Grace died in the 20th year of their marriage.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>With\r\npeople like John Jay, James Madison and Alexander Hamilton publishing their\r\nFederalist Papers and inspiring many of those fellow-countrymen to become part\r\nof the newly-formed Federalist Society, it didn't take long for Webster to\r\nbecome a member.\u00a0 It didn't hurt, of course, that Daniel's father,\r\nEbenezer, had become a Federalist.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>It took no\r\ntime whatever for his peers in the Federalist Society to realize they had a gem\r\non their hands in Webster.\u00a0 His ability to retain information and\r\nknowledge, coupled with his developed (and developing) speaking skills made him\r\nthe ideal articulate spokesman for their political views.\u00a0 At the same\r\ntime, his skills were put to work as he took on some rather high profile cases\r\nas an attorney, prosecuting cases against the likes of Jeremiah Mason.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>In 1812,\r\nDaniel Webster was elected as New Hampshire's representative to the U.S. House\r\nof Representatives, largely because of his opposition to the War of 1812 which\r\nhad crippled New England's shipping and international trade.\u00a0 He served\r\ntwo terms in the U.S. House, leaving Congress in 1816.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>After\r\nleaving Congress, he moved to Boston where he used his legal acumen to play a\r\nhuge part in the defense of the Constitution.\u00a0 At the same time, his past\r\nparticipation in Congress caused the beginning of a transition and shift in his\r\npolitical views.\u00a0 He was called upon to argue some of the nation's most\r\nhigh-profile cases before the Supreme Court (and in particular, DARTMOUTH\r\nCOLLEGE v. WOODWARD, and GIBBONS v.
