\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n

For the past twenty-nine weeks, we have dealt with this nation\u2019s\r\nearliest founders, the covenant they made with each other, and the covenant\r\nthey made with the Lord to establish a nation under God, a nation that would\r\nspread the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ around the world. <\/span>We have talked about the fact that every one\r\nof the 13 colonies established the fact that their existence was due to the\r\nfavor of God. The fact is that everyone of the 50 states that now exist pretty\r\nmuch followed the example of those first 13 colonies who began the formation of\r\nthis nation.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Today and for next two weeks, I want to deal with Thomas\r\nJefferson, his letter to the Danbury Baptist church, his faith, and the\r\nsubsequent abominations to his letter by the FDR Supreme Court.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Socialism\r\nis the religion of those who trust in the government of man; it is the religion\r\nof those who want to make man's government to be God; it is the religion of of\r\nthose who truly hate God, who hate Jesus Christ (they won't admit to that, and\r\nin fact will argue just the opposite) and oppose with every corpuscle of their\r\nbeing a supreme, final, \"bu<\/a>ck-stops-here\"\r\nauthority that is higher than theirs.\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Over the\r\nyears I've had more discussions than I can count with people who want to argue\r\ntheir religion with me.\u00a0 I'm not interested in arguing religion.\u00a0 Any\r\nreligion!\u00a0 There isn't a religion known to, or formed by, man that's worth\r\na grain of salt!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

All of my\r\nconservative friends and associates, please bear with me.\u00a0 I'm warning you\r\nthat my next statement is likely to raise the hackles on the back of your neck\r\nso just stand back for a minute and let me explain.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Thomas\r\nJefferson was right when he wrote the Danbury Baptist Church that, \"I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act\r\nof the whole American people which declared that their legislature should\r\n\"make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the\r\nfree exercise thereof,\" thus building a wall of separation between Church\r\n& State.\"<\/i><\/span><\/b>\u00a0 <\/span><\/i>What\r\nJefferson<\/st1:place> was referring to, of course, was not\r\nimposing a state-sponsored religion.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Before you\r\nblow your lids, let me explain.\u00a0 The pastor of the Danbury<\/st1:PlaceName>Baptist<\/st1:PlaceName>Church<\/st1:PlaceType><\/st1:place> was trying to get the doctrinal\r\nposition of his church incorporated into American law and the Constitution,\r\nwhich was at the time still being debated and amended.\u00a0 Jefferson<\/st1:place>\r\nhad a high regard for personal worship and a low tolerance for the imposition\r\nof religion by heads of state -- even if that religion named the name of Jesus\r\nChrist.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Doctrinal\r\npositions come and go.\u00a0 Doctrinal positions are the atrophied thoughts of\r\nmen and women etched in stone without regard to the reality of relationship.\u00a0\r\nChurches and denominations and organizations think through a position, and then\r\nset that position down on paper as a marker of where they stand on an issue --\r\nbased on where they are or are not in their relationship with God and with the\r\nLord Jesus Christ.\u00a0 That begins the definition of religion.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Jefferson<\/span><\/st1:place> wasn't afraid of\r\nhaving leaders express themselves with regard to their own personal faith, but\r\nhe recognized that people grow and change, and that their relationship with God\r\nthroughout the years tends to alter previous hard-line stances on matters of\r\nbelief.\u00a0 Having a position etched in the Constitution reflecting where an\r\norganization or group of people stood at any moment in time regarding their\r\nrelationship with the Lord ran the risk of turning faith into religion, and\r\nthen imposing that snapshot of their convictions on the nation as a whole.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Let me\r\ndigress for a minute.\u00a0 We all know how the FDR Supreme Court in 1947 and\r\n1948 ruled in McCollum v. Board of Education<\/i><\/b> that, \"in the\r\nwords of Jefferson, the clause against establishment of religion by law was\r\nintended to erect 'a wall of separation between church and state.'\"\u00a0\r\nSince McCollum<\/i><\/b>forbade religious instruction in public schools, it\r\nappeared that the court had used Jefferson<\/st1:place>'s\r\n\"wall\" metaphor as a sword to sever religion from public life, a\r\nresult that was and still is intolerable to many Americans.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

What few\r\npeople seem to be aware of is that the final text of Jefferson's letter to the Danbury<\/st1:PlaceName>Baptist<\/st1:PlaceName>Church<\/st1:PlaceType><\/st1:place> had some 30 percent -- or\r\ntwenty-five lines -- of the original text deleted by the President prior to its\r\nsending and subsequent publication.\u00a0 Within those deletions we find Jefferson<\/st1:place>'s true intent -- and Brother, did the FDR\r\nSupreme Court ever misconstrue it.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Several\r\nyears ago, when Louis Freeh was still FBI Director, he was approached by the\r\nthen-director of the Manuscript Division of the Library of Congress with a\r\nrequest for the FBI to use its state-of-the-art technology to restore\r\nJefferson's obliterated words on the original manuscript of his letter.\u00a0\r\nFreeh agreed, and the FBI was successful in restoring Jefferson<\/st1:place>'s\r\nscratched out words, making them once again legible for everyone to read.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

What Jefferson<\/st1:place> originally wrote was, \"confining myself therefore to the duties of my\r\nstation, which are merely temporal, be assured that your religious rights shall\r\nnever be infringed by any act of mine and that<\/i>.\"<\/span><\/b>These lines\r\nhe crossed out and then wrote: \"concurring\r\nwith<\/i><\/span><\/b>\"; having crossed out these two words, he wrote: \"Adhering to this great act of national\r\nlegislation in behalf of the rights of conscience<\/i>\";<\/span><\/b>next he\r\ncrossed out these words and wrote: \"Adhering\r\nto this expression of the supreme will of the nation in behalf of the rights of\r\nconscience I shall see with friendly dispositions the progress of those\r\nsentiments which tend to restore to man all his natural rights, convinced that\r\nhe has no natural rights in opposition to his social duties<\/span><\/i>.<\/span>\"<\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Thomas\r\nJefferson was no God-hater.\u00a0 He was, however, the target of religious\r\nzealots and extremists who sought to label him an \"atheist\" because\r\nhe refrained from using his pulpit as President to make religious\r\ndeclarations.\u00a0 I won't take the time today to put his letter to the\r\nDanbury Baptists in its entire historical context, but suffice it to say that\r\nhe took the opportunity to use that letter to answer his accusers.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

To quote\r\nfrom the Library of Congress essay on Jefferson's letter, \"One of the most\r\nobnoxious features of the Federalists' American monarchy, as the Republicans\r\ndepicted their putative project, was a church established by law, and Jefferson\r\ndoubtless expected those who read his message to understand that, by supporting\r\n\"British\" fasts and thanksgivings, the Federalists were scheming, as\r\nalways, to open a door to the introduction of an ecclesiastical tyranny.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

In\r\nindicting the Federalists for their \"Tory\" taste for thanksgivings\r\nand fasts, Jefferson<\/st1:place> was playing rough.\r\nThanksgivings and fasts had regularly been celebrated in parts of the country\r\nsince the first settlements: to sully them with Anglophobic mudslinging,\r\ngenerated by the partisan warfare of his own time, as Jefferson<\/st1:place>\r\ndid, was a low blow. But who was being more unfair: Jefferson or his Federalist\r\ninquisitors, who continued to calumniate him as an atheist?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\nunedited draft of the Danbury Baptist letter makes it clear why Jefferson<\/st1:place> drafted it: He wanted his political partisans\r\nto know that he opposed proclaiming fasts and thanksgivings, not because he was\r\nirreligious, but because he refused to continue a British practice that was an\r\noffense to republicanism. To emphasize his resolve in this matter, Jefferson<\/st1:place> inserted two phrases with a clenched-teeth,\r\ndefiant ring: \"wall of eternal separation between church and state\"\r\nand \"the duties of my station, which are merely temporal.\" These last\r\nwords -- \"merely temporal\" -- revealed Jefferson<\/st1:place>'s\r\npreoccupation with British practice. Temporal, a strong word meaning secular,\r\nwas a British appellation for the lay members of the House of Lords, the Lords\r\nTemporal, as opposed to the ecclesiastical members, the Lords Spiritual.\r\n\"Eternal separation\" and \"merely temporal\" -- here was language\r\nas plain as Jefferson<\/st1:place> could make it to assure\r\nthe Republican faithful that their \"religious rights shall never be\r\ninfringed by any act of mine.\"<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

I've\r\nsomewhat gone astray from my original purpose for today's discussion.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Incorporating\r\nreligion into government decree or mandate secularizes and waters down the\r\nentire purpose for faith and relationship with God.\u00a0 Government does not\r\nexist for the purpose of furthering religion.\u00a0 Government exists for the\r\nexclusive purpose of providing <\/span>\"a quiet and peaceable life\r\nin all godliness and honesty.\u00a0 For this is good and acceptable in the\r\nsight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto\r\nthe knowledge of the truth.\"<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>(I Timothy 2:2-4)<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Government\r\nexists exclusively as God's plan to bring about an orderly society in which the\r\nGospel of Jesus Christ has free intercourse.\u00a0 It has always existed for\r\nthat reason.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

I believe\r\nthat Jefferson, despite his obvious rancor against his accusers and attempt to\r\nuse the Danbury letter as an answer, saw how polluted the Gospel became under\r\nthe English church-state, and under the rule of despots throughout history who\r\nattempted to misuse and abuse the Gospel for personal gain and power.\u00a0 He\r\ndetermined that worship should be the free exercise of people in a relationship\r\nwith God -- not a state or government-sponsored religion.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

His\r\nsubsequent acts as President demonstrated that.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Let me\r\nrepeat something I've probably said dozens, if not hundreds, of times.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Religion\r\nis nothing more and nothing less than man deciding the terms of his\r\nrelationship with God (or some false god) in order to avoid responding to the\r\nLord Jesus Christ on His terms within the framework of a\r\nlove-relationship.\u00a0 It matters not whether the religion calls itself\r\n\"Christian\" or not.\u00a0 Every single church denomination, whether\r\nit be Evangelical, Pentecostal, or High<\/st1:PlaceName>Church<\/st1:PlaceType><\/st1:place>, sets boundaries for its\r\nadherents through doctrines that prescribe what people can or should believe,\r\nand how they can or should worship God.\u00a0 Those boundaries do not take a\r\nlove-relationship into account.\u00a0 They don't, in fact, even take into\r\naccount a personal, one-on-one interacting, intertwining relationship with a\r\nvery-much-alive Jesus Christ.\u00a0 They have become \"Christian\" religions:\r\nreligions that name the name of Jesus Christ, but stop short in some area of\r\nresponding to the Lord as He directs.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Every\r\nsingle religion is such because it negates personal responsibility and personal\r\nresponsiveness to the Lord Jesus Christ.\u00a0 The world today is filled with\r\nreligions such as Islam, Buddhism, Shintoism, Hinduism, Animism and fistfuls of\r\nothers far too numerous to name.\u00a0 Some of these religions promote the\r\nworship of false gods.\u00a0 Others supposedly honor God Almighty, but propose\r\nways to please God that are neither based in reality nor relationship.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

A genuine\r\none-on-one relationship with Jesus Christ changes everything.\u00a0\r\nChristianity, when it departs from the religious concept, goes from being a\r\nreligion to being a personal relationship with a living Lord and Saviour.\u00a0\r\nOnce that takes place, everything changes perspective.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

I was four\r\nyears old when I began to have personal experiences of seeing and being visited\r\nby angels.\u00a0 When I was seven years old, I saw Jesus for the first\r\ntime.\u00a0 The Bible went from being theoretical to being real.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

I realized\r\nthe truth of the statement made by the apostle Paul, <\/span>\"All\r\nscripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for\r\nreproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God\r\nmay be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.\"<\/span>\u00a0\r\n<\/span>(See 2\r\nTimothy 3:16)<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Scripture\r\nmay have indeed been penned by men, but they wrote under the direct inspiration\r\nof the Holy Spirit.\u00a0 The Holy Spirit is not some mystical, ethereal being:\r\nHe is a real personage, a part of the triune Godhead.\u00a0 He speaks directly\r\nto those who will listen.\u00a0 He leads -- again, directly -- those who will\r\nfollow.\u00a0 He teaches and prepares those who will submit to become like the\r\nLord Jesus Christ so that individuals may enter into a real one-on-one place of\r\nfellowship with Him.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Scripture\r\nisn't theoretical.\u00a0 It isn't mystical.\u00a0 It isn't some kind of\r\nphilosophy.\u00a0 It is a practical record of the plans and purposes of the\r\nLord Jesus Christ for a people who are willing to enter into a personal,\r\nliving, day-by-day relationship with Him.\u00a0 It serves as a guide to bring\r\nus to that relationship.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\u00a0Bible\r\ndoesn't work for people who try to use it for philosophical purposes, or for\r\npeople who try to equate it with the Quran, or the writings of Confucius, or\r\nany other philosopher who lived throughout history.\u00a0 It is set apart from\r\nevery other single written\u00a0work by virtue of the fact that it is the\r\nauthoritative word of God, spoken to and through men who lived a personal\r\nrelationship with Him.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

What also\r\nsets it apart is that there is nothing written in Scripture that cannot be\r\ntested and proven.\u00a0 Jesus made some bold and stupendous statements which\r\nare either true or they are not.\u00a0 If they are true, they can be\r\nproven.\u00a0 If they are false, then everything He ever did or said was a\r\nhoax.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Jesus\r\nsaid, <\/span>\"I Am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.\u00a0 No man cometh\r\nto the Father but by me.\"<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>(see John 14:6)<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

That sets\r\nHim apart from every other leader that ever lived.\u00a0 Mohammed never claimed\r\nthat he was the only way to God.\u00a0 Buddha never claimed to be anything but\r\na prophet.\u00a0 Confucius never claimed to be anything but a\r\nphilosopher.\u00a0\u00a0 No one else in history has ever said, \"I AM THE\r\nWAY.\"\u00a0 No one else in history has ever said, \"NO MAN COMETH TO\r\nTHE FATHER BUT BY ME.\"<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Those\r\nstatements are either true or they are false.\u00a0 They either stand on their\r\nown merit as truth, or they fail because Jesus was a fraud.\u00a0 Jesus was not\r\n\"a good man.\"\u00a0 He was not just \"a prophet.\"\u00a0 He\r\nwas not, as Mohammed suggested, \"another messenger sent from\r\nGod.\"\u00a0 Jesus Christ either was the Son of God, or He was a raving\r\nlunatic.\u00a0 There are no two ways about it.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

If indeed\r\nHe was and is the Son of God, if indeed He did provide the only way of\r\nredemption so that man could enter into a genuine relationship with God the\r\nFather, then that relationship is not religious, and it is not a religion: it\r\nis reality.\u00a0 That, in summary, is what separates true Christianity from\r\nreligion: it is a relationship with the Lord God -- not a religion in which you\r\nhope to please God.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Those who argue\r\nreligion fall on their own merit.\u00a0 Their arguments make clear the fact\r\nthat the Bible -- to them -- is simply a book of religious statements or\r\narguments.\u00a0 The argument they often propose that it wasn't written by God\r\nis simple proof in itself that they do not know the Lord personally.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

When I speak of a\r\nrelationship with the Lord, I am talking about entering into and enjoying every\r\nthing Jesus promised to \"those who believe.\"\u00a0 That said, now\r\nbeing past my 78th<\/sup> birthday, I have experienced over the past sixty-plus\r\nyears virtually every single promise that Jesus ever made to His\r\nbelievers.\u00a0 I have been healed of numerous diseases.\u00a0 I was raised\r\nfrom the dead at age 41 after dropping dead of a heart attack.\u00a0 I have\r\nseen broken bones healed instantly.\u00a0 I have seen the deaf made to hear,\r\nthe blind made to see, the crippled made to walk.\u00a0 I have seen cancers\r\ndisappear, tuberculosis vanish, Parkinson's Disease wiped into\r\nnothingness.\u00a0 I have seen countless thousands of people's lives changed\r\nbeyond description because they entered into a personal relationship with Jesus\r\nChrist and allowed Him to become the Lord of their lives.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

This is not a\r\nreligion: it is a relationship.\u00a0 And, my friends, it is a relationship\r\nopen to you if you are willing.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n
