\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n

We talked last week\r\nabout the incredible sin of Ham against his father, and how that sin became an\r\ninheritance engraved into his sons and grandsons.\u00a0 <\/span>It set the stage for God\u2019s commands to Israel\r\nto NOT intermarry or to co-mingle with the children of Ham \u2013 represented by the\r\nseven nations that occupied the land of Canaan.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Israel failed to keep God\u2019s command and it cost them dearly!<\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

In\r\nspite of the very specific command of the Lord concerning these seven nations,\r\nand the fact that He clearly identified Israel as a chosen and holy people set\r\napart unto Him, they did exactly as they were commanded not<\/b> to do.\u00a0 <\/span>They intermarried with the nations.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

They\r\nbegan to worship their idols and other gods.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>They made covenants with them to keep them alive.\u00a0 <\/span>They began to engage in the idolatrous and\r\nlicentious practices which perverted their relationship with the Lord.\u00a0 <\/span>And the Lord did exactly what He said He\r\nwould do if they did not follow His very specific commands: He allowed Israel\r\nto ultimately be taken captive by these very peoples and spread abroad\r\nthroughout the earth.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Israel\r\nwas given the opportunity to overcome the Serpent.\u00a0 <\/span>She was given a chance to regain the throne\r\nwhich was her promised inheritance.\u00a0 <\/span>Just\r\nas Adam and Eve were driven from the Garden because they compromised with, and\r\nsuccumbed to, the wiles of the Serpent, Israel was driven from the land of its\r\ninheritance because it compromised with, and intermingled with the seven\r\naccursed nations.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

What\r\nIsrael failed to accomplish in the natural realm as a pattern for the\r\nBride-to-be of the Lord God, the Holy Spirit identified once again as His\r\nintention for the Bride of Christ to accomplish.\u00a0 <\/span>It became a mandate for the first-century\r\nEkklesias.\u00a0 <\/span>These seven presiding spirits\r\ndid not just disappear when their nations were conquered, killed or\r\ndispersed.\u00a0 <\/span>They simply took on a new\r\ncamouflage.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

In\r\nwriting to the seven Ekklesias in Asia Minor, John the Beloved wrote a graphic\r\ndescription of how these same spirits had infected the Body of Christ.\u00a0 <\/span>While the seven letters were written to seven\r\ndifferent Ekklesias, they collectively represented a picture of the Bride, and\r\ntherefore became a single letter.\u00a0 <\/span>Each\r\nEkklesia was struggling with a particular spirit.\u00a0 <\/span>Each letter became an address to overcome one\r\nof those seven spirits.\u00a0 <\/span>Each Ekklesia\r\nrepresented both a segment of the Bride, and an area of overcoming.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\nseven letters -- in succession -- draw a progressive picture of the return path\r\nto the Throne of God, The Lamb and His Bride.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>(The Lord helping me, I will hope to finished a detailed book on each of\r\nthe seven nations, the seven spirits of the Enemy, and the progression of the\r\nseven Ekklesias in overcoming those seven spirits.)\u00a0 <\/span>For the sake of brevity in this letter (and\r\nit is already becoming lengthy as it presently stands), I will quickly identify\r\nthe characteristics of each of the seven Ekklesias as John saw them, and the\r\nrelationship between each Ekklesia and the spirit it was instructed to overcome.\u00a0 <\/span>They are in order as follows:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

(1) <\/span><\/b>Ephesus:\r\n<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>The Fear of Evil:\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>The Hittites<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

(2)<\/span><\/b>Smyrna:\r\n<\/span><\/b>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>The Fear of Death: \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>The\r\nGirgashites<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

(7) <\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>Laodicea:<\/span><\/b>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Merchandising:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>The Canaanites<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Some\r\nof the areas of struggle among these seven Ekklesias are fairly obvious at\r\nfirst glance.\u00a0 <\/span>Others are not so apparent.\u00a0 <\/span>It is not possible for me to deal with these\r\ncomparisons in any depth in this letter, so let me simply deal with the\r\npromises to the the overcomers.\u00a0 <\/span>The\r\npromises, by themselves, are very clear indications of the struggles within the\r\nEkklesias; and the progression to the Throne should be quite obvious to all.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\nfirst letter to the Ekklesia in Ephesus picks up where things fell apart in the\r\nGarden.\u00a0 <\/span>When Adam and Eve ate of the\r\nfruit of the Tree of Knowledge, they were immediately infected with the Fear of\r\nEvil.\u00a0 <\/span>Their reaction to that fear\r\nimpelled them to run and hide.\u00a0 <\/span>They were\r\nimmediately cut off from the Tree of Life -- and the relationship of love and\r\nunity with the Lord.\u00a0 <\/span>Ephesus had\r\ndeparted from its first love.\u00a0 <\/span>It had\r\nfallen -- as Adam and Eve did -- and begun to partake once again of the Tree of\r\nKnowledge.\u00a0 <\/span>The Fear of Evil keeps people\r\nfrom forsaking the Tree of Knowledge, and it cheats people out of a true\r\nlove-relationship with the Lord.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\npromise, therefore, to those who overcome the Fear of Evil, and the Tree of\r\nKnowledge is, <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\"To him who overcomes, I will grant to eat of the Tree of\r\nLife, which is in the Paradise of God<\/span>.\" <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>(Revelation 2:7 NASB)<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\r\n\r\n\u00a0 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\nimplication is clear.\u00a0 <\/span>Those who overcome\r\nthe temptation to eat of the Tree of Knowledge, those who overcome the Fear of\r\nEvil will have an open door back into the Garden where the Tree of Life stands\r\nready to provide Truth instead of knowledge, Life instead of intellect, Love\r\ninstead of fear.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Letter\r\nnumber two to Smyrna clearly identifies their struggle with the Fear of\r\nDeath.\u00a0 <\/span>The Fear of Death makesthlipsis<\/span><\/i><\/b>(tribulation, pressure, fire,\r\nheat) something to avoid at all costs.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>This fear cheats the Bride out of having worked within her being those\r\nthings necessary to withstand all that the Enemy can throw at her.\u00a0 <\/span>The Fear of Death interferes with the\r\nprocesses of the Holy Spirit, who is the Paraklete, and seeks to keep the Bride\r\nfrom ever becoming that authoritative co-regent with Jesus Christ. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\npromise of the Lord, therefore, to the overcomer -- to the one who overcomes\r\nthe Fear of Death -- is, <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\"He who overcomes shall not be hurt by the second\r\ndeath.\"\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>(Revelation\r\n2:11)\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\nsecond death is the final separation from the Bridegroom, for which there is no\r\nremedy.\u00a0 <\/span>For the one delivered from the\r\nsecond death, the future events are seen as a blessing!\u00a0 <\/span>Not something to fear or hide from.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\nthird letter to Pergamos deals with the Fear of Man.\u00a0 <\/span>Those who suffer from the Fear of Man\r\nstruggle with the acceptance of their peers.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Within the Body of Christ, a large majority of \"believers\"\r\nblindly succumb to the doctrine of Balaam, not realizing what is\r\nhappening.\u00a0 <\/span>The doctrine of Balaam is\r\nepitomized in Numbers 22, 23, and 24.\u00a0 <\/span>No\r\npicture could more graphically portray the workings of the Fear of Man, how\r\nthat fear leads one to accept the teachings of men at face value and reject the\r\nrevelation that comes to each individual by and through the Holy Spirit.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\npicture of Balaam is a picture of stubbornness, obtuseness, and the\r\noverwhelming need for acceptance by those in seats of power.\u00a0 <\/span>Also identified in Pergamos are those who\r\nwere holding to the teaching of the Nicolaitans.\u00a0 <\/span>The doctrine of the Nicolaitans (which we\r\nhave identified in previous Open Letters) is the obvious counterpart to the\r\ndoctrine of Balaam.\u00a0 <\/span>That doctrine was\r\n\"Power to Man,\" whether it was seen in the Spirit of the\r\nPharisees\/Perizzites\/Democracy, or the Spirit of the Saduccees\/Amorites\/Hierarchy.\u00a0 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Whether\r\none sought after democratic government or hierarchical government, the end\r\nresult was still the same: \"Power to Man.\"\u00a0 <\/span>Those who suffer from The Fear of Man want to\r\nbe in power over man.\u00a0 <\/span>This third step in\r\nthe overcoming process is extremely critical.\u00a0\r\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\npromise to those who overcome the Fear of Man is this: <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\"To him who overcomes, to him will I give of the hidden\r\nmanna, and I will give him a white stone, and a new name written on the stone\r\nwhich no one knows but he who receives it.\"\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>(Revelation 2:17) NASB\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\nessence of this promise, without getting into the Hebrew metaphors, is\r\nthreefold: (1) the receiving of revelation through the Spirit of God; (2) an\r\ninvitation to the Marriage of the Lamb; and (3) the promise of a new onoma<\/span><\/i><\/b>for the overcomer.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Are\r\nyou seeing the picture thus far?\u00a0 <\/span>We are\r\ntalking about those things that stand in the way of our every achieving the\r\nlevel of authority or rulership that awaits us in Christ Jesus.\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus had to first overcome these three\r\ndominant spirits as manifested in the temptations Satan tried to spring on\r\nJesus after his forty-day fast.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

But\r\njust because these first three are the most dominant of evil spirits, or the\r\nfirst to overcome, it doesn\u2019t mean that there aren\u2019t others equally\r\nnecessary.\u00a0 <\/span>These next four also stand in\r\nthe way of our ruling and reigning with Christ.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

To\r\nthe Ekklesia in Thyatira, John made it clear that they had a battle on their\r\nhands with the Spirit of the Amorites, which had crept into their midst through\r\n\"converted Saduccees.\"\u00a0 <\/span>The\r\nSpirit of Jezebel functioned freely in their midst, seeking preeminence for\r\nitself, usurping the true authority which comes in the place of union with\r\nJesus Christ, and substituting the Spirit of Divination for the Spirit of\r\nProphecy.\u00a0 <\/span>It led men and women to false\r\nallegiances and alliances with spirits whose entire being existed for the theft\r\nof true authority and true love-relationships.\u00a0\r\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\npromise to those who overcome the Spirit of the Amorites, therefore, is true\r\nauthority.\u00a0 <\/span>Listen to the promise: <\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

\"He who overcomes, and he who keeps my deeds until the end,\r\nto him I will give authority over the nations; and he shall rule them with a\r\nrod of iron, as the vessels of the potter are broken to pieces, as I also have\r\nreceived authority from My Father; and I will give him the morning star<\/span>.\"\r\n<\/span>(Revelation\r\n2:26-29) NASB<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\npromise of \"the morning star\" is a clever <\/span>metaphor for\r\n\"preeminence.\"\u00a0 <\/span>The <\/span>difference,\r\nhowever, is that this is the preeminence which comes from the Lord, not that\r\nwhich is freely and cheaply handed out by men and women under the influence and\r\ncontrol of the Spirit of the Amorites.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Sardis\r\nwas clearly struggling with legalism.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>This Ekklesia was infected with the Spirit of the Jebusites.\u00a0 <\/span>That spirit seeks to \"thresh\" the\r\nWord of the Lord until it is unrecognizable.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>It doles it out in spoonfuls, seeking to keep control of those under its\r\npower.\u00a0 <\/span>It is an arrogant spirit which\r\nlays claim to the onoma <\/i><\/b>of the Lord, all the while denying the\r\npower thereof.\u00a0 <\/span>It has a \"name\"\r\nthat it is alive, when in truth it is dead!\u00a0\r\n<\/span>No picture could more clearly identify \"threshing.\" <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

\r\nThreshing\r\nis the practice of picking scriptures apart to promote certain doctrines, and\r\ndemanding that everyone submit to the \"requirements\" of those\r\ndoctrines upon penalty of excommunication or being disfellowshipped.\u00a0 <\/span>By the time the threshing is done, all of the\r\nusable life has been removed, and it is good for nothing but that which is\r\nintended by those who so arrogantly pass it out.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Legalism\r\namong God's people sullies their robes of righteousness.\u00a0 <\/span>One cannot be legalistic and righteous at the\r\nsame time.\u00a0 <\/span>The two simply don't\r\nmix.\u00a0 <\/span>Either one receives and lives the\r\ngrace and love of the Lord Jesus Christ, or they return to the Law (be that the\r\nMosaic Law or so-called New Testament Law).\u00a0\r\n<\/span>One cannot return to the Law in any form and expect to eat of the Tree\r\nof Life, or to have their names in the Book of Life.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\npromise to those who overcome the Spirit of the Jebusites is, <\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

\"He who overcomes shall thus be clothed in white garments;\r\nand I will not erase his name from the Book of Life, and I will confess his\r\nname before My Father, and before His angels.\" <\/span>(Revelation 3:5)<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\nprogression in this promise is clear.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Where the promise to those who overcome the Fear of Man was the\r\ninvitation to the wedding, the promise here is (1)<\/span><\/b>\r\nthe receipt of the wedding garment, (2)<\/span><\/b> a\r\nguarantee of your name in the Book of Life, and (3)<\/span><\/b>\r\nan introduction by the Bridegroom to The Father.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Are\r\nyou beginning to see the progression in this process of overcoming?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\nsixth letter to Philadelphia, at first glance, does not seem to identify any\r\nproblem areas or spirits which need to be overcome.\u00a0 <\/span>But wait!\u00a0\r\n<\/span>That's only at first glance.\u00a0 <\/span>Look\r\na little deeper.\u00a0 <\/span>There is a very clear\r\narea of need for overcoming.\u00a0 <\/span>It is\r\nidentified in the statement, <\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

\"Hold fast what you have, in order that no one take your\r\ncrown<\/span>.\"<\/span>(Revelation\r\n3:11)\u00a0 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

\r\nWhy\r\nsuch a command?\u00a0 <\/span>Philadelphia had\r\novercome everything described in the previous letters.\u00a0 <\/span>The letter to this Ekklesia began with an\r\nunusual appellation, <\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

\"He who is holy, He who is true, He who has the key of\r\nDavid, who opens and no one shuts, and who shuts and no one opens, says\r\nthis....\" <\/span>(<\/span>3:7)\u00a0 <\/span>The signification of the \"Key of David\"\r\nindicates that they understood clearly the promise of the return of \"the\r\nTabernacle of David.\"\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\n\"Key of David\" was the understanding that David ruled in the midst of\r\nworship.\u00a0 <\/span>He was an unorthodox king\r\ncompared to the kings of history, and especially the kings of that era.\u00a0 <\/span>Because worship was David's first priority,\r\nbecause he demonstrated the heart of the Bridegroom for His Bride openly before\r\nthe nation with the companies of worshipers (who ministered continuously before\r\nthe simple tabernacle containing the Ark of the Covenant), the Lord made an\r\nunprecedented promise to David<\/span>, <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\"Your house and your kingdom shall endure before Me\r\nforever; your throne shall be established forever.\"\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>(II Samuel 7:16)<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\nEkklesia in Philadelphia had learned how to rule in the midst of worship.\u00a0 <\/span>The authority of the Lord was clearly evident\r\nin their midst.\u00a0 <\/span>This made them a target\r\nof jealous Christians who accused them of \"setting up their own\r\nkingdom.\"\u00a0 <\/span>That accusation was\r\nblatantly false.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

In\r\nan effort to defuse the criticism, they fell into the trap which has ensnared\r\nbelievers in every generation since: they attempted to \"democratize,\"\r\nto \"spread their counsel\" among many brethren so as to avoid any\r\nappearance of \"being in power.\"\u00a0\r\n<\/span>It essentially became an apology for the power and authority of the Lord\r\nworking in and through them.\u00a0 <\/span>Thus, they\r\nwere permitting the Spirit of the Perizzites to contaminate their Ekklesia, and\r\nin the process, take their crown.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\npromise of the Lord, therefore, was to the point, <\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Now\r\ndo you see the progression.\u00a0 <\/span>We have come\r\nto the place of dwelling perpetually in His presence.\u00a0 <\/span>The promise of the onoma <\/span><\/i><\/b>of \"the city of My God, the new\r\nJerusalem\" is the guarantee that we are now a certified part of the Bride\r\nof the Lord Jesus Christ.\u00a0 <\/span>Not only that,\r\nthe overcomer receives His new onoma<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\r\n
