\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n

We\u2019ve been talking\r\nabout the parallel between the seven nations that occupied Canaan and the seven\r\nletters that were addressed to the body of Christ in Asia Minor by John under\r\nHoly Spirit\u2019s direction.\u00a0 <\/span>I remind you\r\nthat the events described in Revelation begin with John\u2019s statement that \u201cI was\r\nin the Spirit on the Lord\u2019s Day.\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Anyone who tries to\r\nreason out the events in Revelation using normal logic and reasoning, and\r\ncomparing them to other Scriptures based on academic reasoning fails miserably\r\nto understand what the Lord is saying and what He is after in His people.\u00a0 <\/span>Yes, there are comparisons between certain\r\nevents in Revelation and Daniel\u2019s visions, but when one tries to reason them\r\nout, setting dates and time frames to them, they miss entirely what God is trying\r\nto get at in us.\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus is coming for a\r\npeople clothed in white!\u00a0 <\/span>He is coming\r\nfor a people who\u2019ve been tried in the fire.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>He\u2019s coming for a people who have come to know His heart!\u00a0 <\/span>He is NOT coming for a people who have an\r\nescape mentality, a people who want to escape \u201cthe Great Tribulation.\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The tribulation is\r\nnothing more than the experience of pressure, andis something we must\r\nexperience.\u00a0 <\/span>It is trial by fire. The\r\napostle Peter put it like this:<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n

I Peter 4:12-14<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span><\/b>Beloved,\r\nthink it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though\r\nsome strange thing happened unto you: But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers\r\nof Christ\u2019s sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad\r\nalso with exceeding joy. If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are\r\nye<\/i>; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he\r\nis evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Anyway,\r\non to picking up where we left off last week.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

We\r\nhave come to the place of dwelling perpetually in His presence.\u00a0 <\/span>The promise of the onoma <\/span><\/i><\/b>of \"the city of My God, the new\r\nJerusalem\" is the guarantee that we are now a certified part of the Bride\r\nof the Lord Jesus Christ.\u00a0 <\/span>Not only that,\r\nthe overcomer receives His new onoma<\/span><\/i>. <\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\nseventh letter, written to the Ekklesia in Laodicea, identifies a struggle we\r\nhave all seen.\u00a0 <\/span>Their battle was with the\r\nSpirit of the Canaanites.\u00a0 <\/span>They had\r\novercome the other six spirits, and had come into a place of extraordinary blessing\r\nand prosperity.\u00a0 <\/span>In the midst of this\r\ngreat blessing, they fell into a series of traps laid for them by the Spirit of\r\nthe Canaanites.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

When\r\nindividuals experience prolonged struggles and battles in the realm of the\r\nspirit, there is a weariness which lays hold of them.\u00a0 <\/span>It taps them at the core of their very\r\nbeing.\u00a0 <\/span>In that place of weariness, there\r\nis a tendency -- when one experiences great victories, and when the blessings\r\nof the Lord begin to be outwardly bestowed and manifested -- to just sit back\r\nand relax, to feel like they have \"arrived,\" to feel like it is okay\r\nto quit battling for a while.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

It\r\nis at this point that this particular spirit steps in to deceive God's people\r\n-- and particularly, the Bride -- into believing that they need to \"cash in\"\r\non some of the revelations they have received and the talents which have been\r\ngiven to them, and to utilize the place of authority they have to benefit their\r\nphysical well being -- in other words, to enjoy a few \"creature\r\ncomforts.\"\u00a0 <\/span>It is a lie!<\/b>\u00a0 <\/span>It happens with the Throne of God before\r\nyou!\u00a0 <\/span>....Except that you are oblivious\r\nto that throne. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

People\r\nbecome tempted to sell, or to merchandise, the word of the Lord, the blessings\r\nand revelations, the truths received in exchange for money, for recognition,\r\nfor esteem, for power -- or for whatever their long-subdued flesh screams out\r\nfor.\u00a0 <\/span>They quit fighting.\u00a0 <\/span>They stop with the revelation they have\r\nalready received.\u00a0 <\/span>They become content\r\nwith the wonderful growth they have already experienced.\u00a0 <\/span>And they become lukewarm.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Because\r\nthis is such a crucial and determining place, the Lord drew an astounding\r\npicture for them -- one they could not possibly miss.\u00a0 <\/span>The Ekklesia in Laodicea was well aware of\r\nJesus' parable of the ten virgins.\u00a0 <\/span>They\r\nwere well aware of the significance of the readied virgins entering the bride\r\nchamber with the Bridegroom, the door being shut, and the foolish virgins\r\nreturning to knock on the door wanting to come in.\u00a0 <\/span>They clearly understood that the foolish\r\nvirgins were excluded from being a part of the Bride.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Within\r\nthis framework of understanding, then, Jesus says to this Ekklesia, <\/span>\"Behold\r\nI stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I\r\nwill come in to him, and will dine with him, and he with Me<\/span>.\"\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Thus, He was putting them in the bridal\r\nchamber, and showing Himself as being the rejected Bridegroom, standing outside\r\non their wedding night.\u00a0 <\/span>There was no way\r\nthey could miss the significance of this picture.\u00a0 <\/span>They were not<\/b> worthy of being in the\r\nbride chamber.\u00a0 <\/span>It was a startling way of\r\nexpressing His love and desire for them.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>His promise, therefore, to those who overcame the Spirit of the\r\nCanaanites was, <\/span>\"He who overcomes, I will grant to him to sit down with Me\r\non My throne, even as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His\r\nthrone.\"\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>(see Revelation\r\n3:20,21)\u00a0 <\/span>NASB<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Now\r\ndo you get it?\u00a0 <\/span>The progression -- from\r\nthe first letter to the seventh -- begins with the Tree of Life, and ends with\r\nthe Throne.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Notice\r\nthat Jesus clearly states, <\/span>\"I also overcame, and sat\r\ndown with My Father on His throne.\"\u00a0\r\n<\/span><\/span>Everything\r\nthat was written in the seven letters to the seven Ekklesias was a picture of\r\nwhat Jesus overcame.\u00a0 <\/span>I obviously don't\r\nhave room in a letter like this to demonstrate for you each of the successive\r\nareas in which He overcame, but consider for a moment the temptation by Satan\r\nimmediately following His forty days of fasting in the wilderness.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Each\r\narea of temptation was a challenge to that which had been established in\r\nHim.\u00a0 <\/span>We have discussed this in prior\r\nletters, but once again, listen to what Satan said as he approached Jesus.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>\"If you are the\r\nSon of God, command that these stones become bread.\"<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>OK!\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Now hold on!\u00a0 <\/span>IF<\/b> you are\r\nthe Son of God?\u00a0 <\/span>What's with this\r\nIF?\u00a0 <\/span>Not six weeks before, Jesus had been\r\nbaptized by John in the Jordan River.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>When He came out of the water, the Spirit of God had descended upon Him\r\nin the form of a dove.\u00a0 <\/span>An audible voice\r\nof the Father had been heard speaking out of the heavens, saying, <\/span>\"This\r\nis My Beloved Son in whom I am well-pleased.\"\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>This is precisely the same question that\r\nwas thrown at Adam and Eve, that is to say, \"Hath God said?\"\u00a0 <\/span>Yes!\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Absolutely!\u00a0 <\/span>Without question!<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

So\r\nhow did Jesus respond?\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>\"It\r\nis written, Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word which proceeds\r\nout of the mouth of God<\/span>.\" <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>(see Matthew 4:1-11)\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

His\r\nanswer was two-edged.\u00a0 <\/span>First, He dealt\r\nwith the fact that the demands of the flesh for sustenance are not the criteria\r\nby which we live.\u00a0 <\/span>Secondly, He answered\r\nto the question of whether He was the Son of God.\u00a0 <\/span>The Father had spoken audibly out of heaven\r\nin the presence of many witnesses, who heard Him say, <\/span>\"This\r\nis My Beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.\"\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Those words proceeded out of His\r\nmouth.\u00a0 <\/span>Though Jesus knew that He was the\r\nSon, and it was certainly engraved in His spirit, it was not necessary for Him\r\nto rely strictly on what He knew within because the same word in His spirit had\r\nproceeded -- audibly -- out of the mouth of God, The Father.\u00a0 <\/span>His overcoming, therefore, began with the\r\n\"Word of His testimony.\"<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Step\r\ntwo followed as Satan took Him into the city of Jerusalem and had Him stand on\r\na pinnacle of the temple.\u00a0 <\/span>Once again, he\r\nsaid, \"IF you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written,\r\n\"He will give His angels charge concerning you;\" and, \"On their\r\nhands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a\r\nstone.\"\u00a0 <\/span>Whoa!\u00a0 <\/span>Here we go again!\u00a0 <\/span>Never mind the fact that Jesus has just\r\ntestified to the fact that God has said He is The Son, Satan is going to hit\r\nHim up by a different method.\u00a0 <\/span>The Bible\r\nis the Word of God -- right?\u00a0 <\/span>So let's\r\nquote some scriptures in order to support this challenge.\u00a0 <\/span>In fact, let's quote from Moses, the\r\nLawgiver, in the Psalms (Psalm 91:11,12).\u00a0\r\n<\/span>This is the word of God isn't it?<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

As\r\na matter of fact -- NO!<\/b>\u00a0 <\/span>The Bible\r\nconsists of words which God has spoken, and things which He has done, but it is\r\nnot a substitute for Him!\u00a0 <\/span>John later\r\ntestified of Jesus, <\/span>\"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God,\r\nand the Word was God<\/span>.\"<\/span>\r\n(John 1:1)\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus, therefore, was the\r\nWord<\/u>.\u00a0 <\/span>The issue at hand was not<\/b>\r\nwhat He had said, but what He was saying<\/u> -- and it wasn't<\/b> to jump\r\noff the pinnacle of the temple.\u00a0 <\/span>Quoting\r\nscriptures to get people to disobey and\/or disregard that which the Lord is<\/b>\r\nsaying has always been one of the primary tactics of Satan.\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus' response hit directly at the heart of\r\nthis tactic, <\/span>\"On the other hand, it is written, You shall not put the\r\nLord your God to the test.\"<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\r\n\u00a0<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Get\r\nit?\u00a0 <\/span>The temptation began with, \"IF\r\nyou are the Son of God....\"\u00a0 <\/span>No\r\namount of scripture quoting was going to get Jesus to put the IF to the\r\ntest.\u00a0 <\/span>He was and is the Son of God,\r\nPeriod!\u00a0 <\/span>End of Statement!\u00a0 <\/span>Exclamation Mark!\u00a0 <\/span>Then Jesus quoted a scripture in return (from\r\nDeuteronomy 6:16) to demonstrate that which God was saying,<\/span>\r\n\"You shall not put the Lord your God to the test<\/span>.\"\r\n<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>For Jesus to have acted on the basis of\r\nwritten scriptures in response to Satan's temptation would have been to submit\r\nHimself, as Adam and Eve had done, to the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and\r\nEvil.\u00a0 <\/span>His response to Satan restated in\r\nthe most emphatic of terms that which the Father had said: namely, that He was<\/b>\r\nThe Son of God; that as the Son of God, He <\/b>was God, and therefore Satan\r\nwas in violation of that which was both spoken and written, <\/span>\"You\r\nshall not put the Lord your God to the test.\"\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

In\r\nso stating, He also testified to the fact that He, Jesus Christ, was \"the\r\nLord your<\/b> God\" as far as Satan was concerned.\u00a0 <\/span>In other words, He was the Lord God over<\/i>\r\nSatan, and Satan was as much subject to Him as he was to The Father.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Consider\r\nhow Jesus has overcome up to this point.\u00a0\r\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

He\r\nhas overcome the undoubted screams of His natural flesh to be fed.\u00a0 <\/span>The feeding was certainly justified.\u00a0 <\/span>He had completed the full forty days of\r\nfasting.\u00a0 <\/span>It would have been\r\n\"good\" for Him to eat at that point.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>The temptation of Satan was not to get Him to do anything out of the\r\nordinary in terms of feeding Himself.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>The timing was wrong, however.\u00a0 <\/span>So\r\nwas the methodology.\u00a0 <\/span>The point was not\r\nwhether Jesus had the ability to turn the rocks into bread.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\npoint was in proving His divinity as the Son of God in order to feed His\r\nflesh.\u00a0 <\/span>The point was in responding to a\r\nsuggestion from Satan.\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus was\r\novercoming both His flesh (The Fear of Death), and the need to prove His Divine\r\nnature (The Fear of Man) so as to impress Satan with His great power.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Overcoming\r\nthe second temptation reinforced His authority over The Fear of Death and the\r\nFear of Man.\u00a0 <\/span>It also established the\r\nbasis for His throne as the preeminent throne, with absolute authority over\r\nSatan.\u00a0 <\/span>The specific scriptures which\r\nSatan quoted, however, were addressing The Fear of Evil.\u00a0 <\/span>Satan's suggestion was that He could commit a\r\nrash act under the premise that Angels were in full charge of the situation,\r\nand that He had nothing to fear by stepping off the pinnacle of the temple.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

There\r\nis another, even greater, aspect of Jesus' overcoming in this temptation,\r\nhowever.\u00a0 <\/span>Do you see where the temptation\r\noccurred?\u00a0 <\/span>On the pinnacle of the\r\ntemple.\u00a0 <\/span>Satan was prophesying falsely,\r\nusing \"the temple\" as a religious symbol.\u00a0 <\/span>The idea being promoted was this: \"This\r\nis the temple (the church).\u00a0 <\/span>This is the\r\nhouse of God.\u00a0 <\/span>This is the place of God's\r\npresence.\u00a0 <\/span>Submit to me here, and you\r\nwill be safe.\u00a0 <\/span>So long as your act is\r\nattached in some way to the temple\/church, you can do anything you want.\u00a0 <\/span>There is safety in the structure.\"\u00a0 <\/span>It was the manipulative lie later promoted\r\nunder the doctrine of the Nicolaitans.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>It made system and structure to be God in place of a personal\r\nrelationship, and justified any and all acts associated with the\r\nstructure.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Jesus'\r\novercoming of this temptation, therefore, went beyond the Fear of Death, The\r\nFear of Man, or The Fear of Evil; He also overcame the master spirits of\r\nrebellion, control, witchcraft, false prophecy, divination -- and all that was\r\nrepresented in the Spirit of the Amorites and the Spirit of the Perizzites.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Satan's\r\ntemptation of Jesus still had one final effort.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>This time Jesus was taken into a very high mountain and given a view of\r\nall the kingdoms of the world, and their glory.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Consider that Jesus had overcome everything of the Enemy's tactics up to\r\nthis point.\u00a0 <\/span>Satan now says, <\/span>\"All\r\nthese things will I give you, if you will fall down and worship me<\/span>.\"\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Talk about blatant!\u00a0 <\/span>At first glance, it seems ludicrous that\r\nSatan would use a frontal approach with such transparent bribery in view of his\r\nprevious failures and rebuffs.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

But\r\nwait!\u00a0 <\/span>Stop for a moment and consider\r\nonce again the Ekklesia in Laodicea.\u00a0 <\/span>He\r\ndid exactly <\/b>the same thing with them.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Here they are, having overcome all the wiles of the Enemy, having\r\nreceived the invitation to the wedding, having been made a part of the Bride,\r\nhaving been given a crown.\u00a0 <\/span>Having\r\nreached this stage, however, they are weary and fatigued from the\r\nstruggles.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

For\r\nthem, the blessing of the Lord has begun to bring some physical benefits -- our\r\nsociety today would call it \"prosperity.\"\u00a0 <\/span>In step-by-step fashion, the Serpent comes\r\nwith his artifice and says, \"You're tired.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>You don't have to wait until some far off future date to enjoy the\r\nbenefits of your victories.\u00a0 <\/span>You can cash\r\nin on the esteem you have received.\u00a0 <\/span>Make\r\ncompromises with the Roman Emperor.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>He'll cut you some slack -- I guarantee it!\u00a0 <\/span>Then you can parlay your favor with him to\r\ngain prominent positions in the politics of Laodicea; and then use those\r\npositions to provide gainful employment for your Christian brothers and\r\nsisters.\u00a0 <\/span>You can have a \u2018Christian\r\nCity!\u2019\"\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

And\r\nthus did Satan sell the Ekklesia in Laodicea a bill of goods.\u00a0 <\/span>He laid before them \"the kingdoms of\r\nthis world, and their glory.\"\u00a0 <\/span>This\r\nis precisely how it all happened.\u00a0 <\/span>They\r\nbought into it hook, line and sinker.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>And in the process stopped fighting Satan.\u00a0 <\/span>And stood still spiritually.\u00a0 <\/span>And became rich in this world's goods.\u00a0 <\/span>And lost their place of intimacy with the\r\nLord.\u00a0 <\/span>And gave up the real Throne for a\r\nvery artificial and temporary throne and place of power.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Was\r\nit a ludicrous approach?\u00a0 <\/span>Had Satan lost\r\nhis marbles thinking he could sell Jesus on this idea?\u00a0 <\/span>Take a look a Jesus' circumstances.\u00a0 <\/span>For forty days he had fasted in the\r\nwilderness.\u00a0 <\/span>I don't know how many of you\r\nhave ever fasted for forty days, but Della and I have both done it many\r\ntimes.\u00a0 <\/span>Except for a couple of very\r\nunusual circumstances in which we were supernaturally empowered throughout the\r\nforty-day period, we have mostly ended those fasts very weak and drained\r\nphysically.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Several\r\nyears ago, Della spent the last week of a forty-day fast in bed just struggling\r\nto hang on to some vestige of strength.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>I have to believe that -- in this instance for Jesus -- because He was\r\nsetting the stage for the most critical phase of his earthly existence, He went\r\nthrough some real extremes in His flesh.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>The probabilities are that He was in very weakened condition physically\r\nand in a heightened state of sensitivity to the needs of the flesh.\u00a0 <\/span>His victory, therefore, over Satan in the\r\nfirst two temptations must have been very energizing.\u00a0 <\/span>His emotions would have been at a real high,\r\nand there would have been a natural tendency to rest on those laurels.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Satan's\r\neffort, consequently, would have been logical -- especially when you consider\r\nthat he was eating of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, and judging\r\nthe Lord accordingly.\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus' answer must\r\nhave been a real shock to him.\u00a0 <\/span>It was\r\nnot a logical response.\u00a0 <\/span>It was a\r\npowerful comeback in the realm of the Spirit that raised up the Throne of God;\r\none that decimated the roots and foundations of the Tree of Knowledge, and\r\neverything that Satan had stood upon, <\/span>\"Begone,\r\nSatan!\u00a0 <\/span>For it is written: You shall\r\nworship the Lord your God, and serve Him only.\" <\/span>(quotations from\r\nthe NASB)<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Next\r\nweek we will show you how Jesus\u2019 answers to Satan established the Throne of\r\nGod.<\/span><\/p>\r\n
