\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n

We\u2019ve talked about\r\nthis before in this series but let me say this again.\u00a0 <\/span>The newborn believer in Christ has more\r\nauthority in their little finger than the strongest unbeliever has at their\r\ndisposal.\u00a0 <\/span>The problem is that 99.999% of\r\nthem don\u2019t know it, don\u2019t know how to access it, and as a consequence get run\r\nover like they\u2019ve been hit by a Mack truck. <\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Our authority in\r\nChrist Jesus literally makes us invincible IF we know how to use it.\u00a0 <\/span>That authority MUST be tested, tried, tested,\r\ntried, tested, tried, etc. \u2014 again and again and again.\u00a0 <\/span>The more that authority is tested in us (and\r\nwe ARE going to fall flat on our faces at times) and we continue to overcome,\r\nthe more that authority will grow from a practical standpoint, and the more we\r\nwill slam the Enemy\u2019s face into the ground!<\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

There is no substitute\r\nfor the seasoning of our authority!\u00a0 <\/span>In\r\nthe 74+ years of my walking with the Lord, I\u2019ve fallen flat on my face more\r\ntimes than I can count.\u00a0 <\/span>The testing of\r\nthat authority has taken me through Hell and back again.\u00a0 <\/span>Where I am today I wouldn\u2019t want to go\r\nthrough again, but I wouldn\u2019t trade my experiences for all the cattle on a\r\nthousand hills!<\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

I\u2019ve brought thousands\r\nof people to the Lord, healed the sick, raised the dead, cleansed the lepers\r\n(metaphorically), cast out demons by the thousand, and watched the Lord restore\r\nthe lives of more people than I can count.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>But I\u2019ve only scratched the surface!<\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Consider this!\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus did all this in a matter of a day or\r\ntwo.\u00a0 <\/span>It has taken me a virtual\r\nlifetime.\u00a0 <\/span>But that authority continues\r\nto grow \u2014 and that\u2019s God\u2019s intentioned objective, not only for me but for all\r\nof you!<\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Last\r\nweek, we left off in the middle of our look at all that David had to go through\r\nbefore he was actually seated on the throne of Israel according to the promise\r\nand anointing of God.\u00a0 <\/span>Let\u2019s pick it up\r\nagain today.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

I\r\ngot a little ahead of myself last week with the javelin incident, so let\u2019s back\r\nup a bit.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

I Samuel 19:1-7<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0\r\n<\/span><\/span>And Saul spake to Jonathan his son, and to all his servants,\r\nthat they should kill David. But Jonathan Saul\u2019s son delighted much in David:\r\nand Jonathan told David, saying, Saul my father seeketh to kill thee: now\r\ntherefore, I pray thee, take heed to thyself until the morning, and abide in a\r\nsecret place<\/i>, and hide thyself: And I will go out and stand beside my\r\nfather in the field where thou art<\/i>, and I will commune with my father of\r\nthee; and what I see, that I will tell thee. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

And Jonathan spake good of David unto Saul his father, and said\r\nunto him, Let not the king sin against his servant, against David; because he\r\nhath not sinned against thee, and because his works have been<\/i> to\r\nthee-ward very good: For he did put his life in his hand, and slew the\r\nPhilistine, and the LORD wrought a great salvation for all Israel: thou sawest it<\/i>,\r\nand didst rejoice: wherefore then wilt thou sin against innocent blood, to slay\r\nDavid without a cause?<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

And Saul hearkened unto the voice of Jonathan: and Saul sware, As<\/i>\r\nthe LORD liveth, he shall not be slain. And Jonathan called David, and Jonathan\r\nshowed him all those things. And Jonathan brought David to Saul, and he was in\r\nhis presence, as in times past.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Sounds\r\nhunky dory, doesn\u2019t it?\u00a0 <\/span>The problem is,\r\nyou cannot trust the word of anyone who is under the influence of evil\r\nspirits!\u00a0 <\/span>They sound fine today, but\r\ntomorrow, something will take place that will negate everything they\u2019ve\r\nsaid!\u00a0 <\/span>And so it was with Saul.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

I Samuel 19:8-10<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0\r\n<\/span><\/span>And there was war again: and David went out, and fought with the\r\nPhilistines, and slew them with a great slaughter; and they fled from him.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\r\n\u00a0 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/sup><\/p>\r\n\r\n

And the evil spirit from the LORD was upon Saul, as he sat in\r\nhis house with his javelin in his hand: and David played with his<\/i> hand. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

And Saul sought to smite David even to the wall with the\r\njavelin; but he slipped away out of Saul\u2019s presence, and he smote the javelin\r\ninto the wall: and David fled, and escaped that night.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Now\r\nDavid IS on the run for his life!\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s\r\nnot going to stop for years to come!\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Things get even more intense when Saul sends messengers to David\u2019s house\r\nand tells Michal, David\u2019s wife, that they need to see him.\u00a0 <\/span>Michal warns David that if he remains home,\r\nhe will be dead by morning, and she helps him to escape.\u00a0 <\/span>So David heads over to Naioth in Ramah where\r\nSamuel the prophet lives.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Saul\r\nhas lost any reverence for the Lord, or for Samuel the prophet, and heads over\r\nto Naioth himself.\u00a0 <\/span>Watch what\r\nhappens.\u00a0 <\/span>Talk about things backfiring on\r\nSaul!<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

I Samuel 19:19-24<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0\r\n<\/span><\/span>And it was told Saul, saying, Behold, David is<\/i> at Naioth\r\nin Ramah.\u00a0 <\/span>And Saul sent messengers to\r\ntake David: and when they saw the company of the prophets prophesying, and\r\nSamuel standing as<\/i> appointed over them, the Spirit of God was upon the\r\nmessengers of Saul, and they also prophesied. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

And when it was told Saul, he sent other messengers, and they\r\nprophesied likewise. And Saul sent messengers again the third time, and they\r\nprophesied also. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Then went he also to Ramah, and came to a great well that is<\/i>\r\nin Sechu: and he asked and said, Where are<\/i> Samuel and David? And one<\/i>\r\nsaid, Behold, they be<\/i> at Naioth in Ramah. And he went thither to Naioth\r\nin Ramah: and the Spirit of God was upon him also, and he went on, and\r\nprophesied, until he came to Naioth in Ramah. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

And he stripped off his clothes also, and prophesied before\r\nSamuel in like manner, and lay down naked all that day and all that night.\r\nWherefore they say, Is<\/i> Saul also among the prophets?<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

So\r\nmuch for Saul\u2019s plan!\u00a0 <\/span>This is a lesson\r\nfor everyone to learn from.\u00a0 <\/span>Despite the\r\nEnemy\u2019s plans and efforts to do away with David because of who he is and\r\nbecause of the anointing he has to become King, every effort is going to\r\nfail.\u00a0 <\/span>That doesn\u2019t mean things aren\u2019t\r\ngoing to really get treacherous for David: brother, are they ever!<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

And\r\nthis is a lesson for all of us!\u00a0 <\/span>Knowing\r\nGod\u2019s intentions for us and the anointing He has upon us for the destiny in our\r\nlife means we are going to have to be vigilant continuously!\u00a0 <\/span>David was on the run for his life and had to\r\nlive under compromised cirumstances for a time.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>That didn\u2019t lessen the call or anointing of God.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

What\r\nI find interesting \u2014 and it has been an example for me \u2014 is that the person so\r\ntargeting David had been anointed by God for his position.\u00a0 <\/span>Saul had been anointed by God, but lost his\r\nposition because of his arrogance.\u00a0 <\/span>He\r\nthought his anointing gave him permission to do something he was NOT anointed\r\nto do.\u00a0 <\/span>Much of the opposition I\u2019ve\r\nexperienced throughout the years has come from people who were likewise\r\nanointed by God for their position in leadership or ministry.\u00a0 <\/span>Whatever they saw in me, they saw as a threat\r\nto their own place just like Saul saw David.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

And\r\nDavid refused to stretch forth his hand in judgment against Saul because he\r\nrecognized that Saul had been anointed by God.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>He saw that if he stretched forth his hand in any way against Saul that\r\nhe would be stretching himself against God\u2019s anointing.\u00a0 <\/span>So David relied on God to bring the judgment\r\ninstead.\u00a0 <\/span>It paid dividends for David!<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

In\r\nmy own situation, I saw the peril of attempting to execute judgment against\r\nthose leaders and ministers who were attempting to destroy everything they saw\r\nme doing.\u00a0 <\/span>I refused to touch them in any\r\nway.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>In each circumstance, I watched\r\nthe Lord render judgment against them in ways that made me tremble.\u00a0 <\/span>In each case, the Lord was my\r\nvindication!\u00a0 <\/span>And God was David\u2019s\r\nvindication!<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

I\r\nSamuel 20 gives us the picture of the relationship between David and Jonathan,\r\nSaul\u2019s son.\u00a0 <\/span>When David doesn\u2019t show up\r\nfor a feast with the King that he normally attended, Saul makes a remark about\r\nit at the table to Jonathan, knowing that Jonathan is likely to have an idea\r\nwhere David is.\u00a0 <\/span>When Jonathan (who knew\r\nbecause of his discussion with David) gave an explanation to Saul, Saul became\r\nenraged at Jonathan and in the samw way he had attempted to kill David with his\r\njavelin, he grabbed it and hurled it at Jonathan.\u00a0 <\/span>Jonathan avoided the spear and by\r\npre-arrangement with David arranged to have an archery event in which a servant\r\nwould retrieve the arrows.\u00a0 <\/span>One of the\r\narrows would be shot some distance and Jonathan would cry out in a loud voice\r\nso that David (in hiding) could hear, \u201cIs not the arrow beyond thee?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

It\r\nwas a signal to David that it was not safe to come back and that Saul was\r\ndetermined to kill David.\u00a0 <\/span>So after the\r\nservant went back to the city with the bow and arrows, Jonathan and David were\r\nable to meet.\u00a0 <\/span>David made a covenant with\r\nJonathan.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Jonathan\r\nknew that God had anointed David to become the King in Israel at some appointed\r\ntime.\u00a0 <\/span>He was not the least bit jealous\r\nthat it wasn\u2019t his to take in the place of his father, and with David ascension\r\nto the throne, he wanted David to show mercy to his family.\u00a0 <\/span>David guaranteed that any of Jonathan\u2019s\r\nchildren would be safe under his rule.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

I Samuel 20:42<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0\r\n<\/span><\/span>And Jonathan said to David, Go in peace, forasmuch as we have\r\nsworn both of us in the name of the LORD, saying, The LORD be between me and\r\nthee, and between my seed and thy seed for ever. And he arose and departed: and\r\nJonathan went into the city.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

So\r\nDavid heads into the land occupied by the Philistines, but not before stopping\r\nin Nob where Ahimelech, the priest, resided.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>He requested bread for those servants who were with him as well as a\r\nsword.\u00a0 <\/span>Ahimelech was forced to give\r\nDavid the hallowed bread from the Table of Shewbread because he feared the\r\nauthority that was already obviously resident in David.\u00a0 <\/span>As far as a sword was concerned, the sword of\r\nGoliath that David had killed Goliath with was the only thing available, so\r\nthat\u2019s what David left with.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

I Samuel 21:10-15<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0\u00a0\r\n<\/span><\/span>And David arose, and fled that day for fear of Saul, and went to\r\nAchish the king of Gath. <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/sup><\/p>\r\n\r\n

And the servants of Achish said unto him, Is<\/i> not this\r\nDavid the king of the land? did they not sing one to another of him in dances,\r\nsaying, Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands? <\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

And David laid up these words in his heart, and was sore afraid\r\nof Achish the king of Gath. And he changed his behaviour before them, and\r\nfeigned himself mad in their hands, and scrabbled on the doors of the gate, and\r\nlet his spittle fall down upon his beard.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Then said Achish unto his servants, Lo, ye see the man is mad:\r\nwherefore then<\/i> have ye brought him to me?\u00a0 <\/span>Have I need of mad men, that ye have brought\r\nthis fellow<\/i> to play the mad man in my presence? shall this fellow<\/i>\r\ncome into my house?<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

This\r\nis an interesting scenario.\u00a0 <\/span>David is\r\nsuddenly overtaken by fear.\u00a0 <\/span>He knows he\r\ncannot submit to that fear so he alters his behavior before this Philistine\r\nking and begins to sing.\u00a0 <\/span>He knew that\r\nthe king would believe him to have gone over the edge and become insane.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\nHebrew word rendered \u201c<\/span>scrabbled<\/span>\u201d\r\nreally is a musical term which means to beat out a rhythm.\u00a0 <\/span>Where we read that David \u201c<\/span>feigned\r\nhimself mad<\/span>,\u201d\r\nthe Hebrew text has the word, halal<\/span><\/i><\/b>,\r\nwhich means: to make a boast, to sing clearly,\r\nto celebrate.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0 <\/span>And what do you\r\nthink David was singing?<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Psalm\r\n34:1-4<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>I will bless the LORD\r\nat all times: his praise shall<\/i> continually be<\/i> in my mouth.\u00a0 <\/span>My soul shall make her boast in the LORD: the\r\nhumble shall hear thereof<\/i>, and be glad.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together.\u00a0 <\/span>I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and\r\ndelivered me from all my fears.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Here\u2019s\r\nwhere things get really exciting.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

I Samuel 22:1-2<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0\r\n<\/span><\/span>David therefore departed thence, and escaped to the cave\r\nAdullam: and when his brethren and all his father\u2019s house heard it<\/i>, they\r\nwent down thither to him. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

And every one that was<\/i> in distress, and every one that was<\/i>\r\nin debt, and every one that was<\/i> discontented, gathered themselves unto\r\nhim; and he became a captain over them: and there were with him about four\r\nhundred men.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

All\r\nof a sudden, David has a small army of loyal soldiers.\u00a0 <\/span>We learn later that many of these soldiers\r\nbecame \u201cmighty men of valor.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>However,\r\nthere is a sad commentary that takes place now.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Saul finds out that Ahimelech has assisted David.\u00a0 <\/span>With his now utter disregard for the\r\nanointing of the Lord, he commands those soldiers that are with him to kill all\r\nthe priests in Nob.\u00a0 <\/span>Those soldiers will\r\nnot touch God\u2019s anointed so Saul turns to Doeg the Edomite (who ratted on\r\nAhimelech in the first place) and commands him to kill the priests.\u00a0 <\/span>Doeg takes it much further. \u00a0<\/span>He kills all the priests, their families,\r\ntheir wives and children, along with the newborn, and doesn\u2019t stop there!\u00a0 <\/span>He kills all the sheep and oxen and donkeys\r\nin a bloody massacre that leaves none of the priestly household alive.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\nonly bright spot in this horror was that Abiathar, a priest and member of\r\nAhimelech\u2019s family, manages to escape unseen and goes to meet David.\u00a0 <\/span>David assures him that he will be safe and\r\nthat he can remain with David\u2019s company.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

We\r\nget a narrative in I Samuel 23 which is descriptive of the events that follow\r\nDavid for month after month and year after year.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

I Samuel 23:14-29<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0\r\n<\/span><\/span>And David <\/span>abode in the wilderness in strong holds, and remained in a\r\nmountain in the wilderness of Ziph. And Saul sought him every day, but God\r\ndelivered him not into his hand. And David saw that Saul was come out to seek\r\nhis life: and David was<\/i> in the wilderness of Ziph in a wood. And\r\nJonathan Saul\u2019s son arose, and went to David into the wood, and strengthened\r\nhis hand in God.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\r\n\u00a0<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/sup><\/p>\r\n\r\n

And he said unto him, Fear not: for the hand of Saul my father\r\nshall not find thee; and thou shalt be king over Israel, and I shall be next\r\nunto thee; and that also Saul my father knoweth. And they two made a covenant\r\nbefore the LORD: and David abode in the wood, and Jonathan went to his house.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Then came up the Ziphites to Saul to Gibeah, saying, Doth not\r\nDavid hide himself with us in strong holds in the wood, in the hill of\r\nHachilah, which is<\/i> on the south of Jeshimon? Now therefore, O king, come\r\ndown according to all the desire of thy soul to come down; and our part shall\r\nbe<\/i> to deliver him into the king\u2019s hand.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

And Saul said, Blessed be<\/i> ye of the LORD; for ye have\r\ncompassion on me. Go, I pray you, prepare yet, and know and see his place where\r\nhis haunt is, and<\/i> who hath seen him there: for it is told me that<\/i>\r\nhe dealeth very subtly. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

See therefore, and take knowledge of all the lurking places\r\nwhere he hideth himself, and come ye again to me with the certainty, and I will\r\ngo with you: and it shall come to pass, if he be in the land, that I will\r\nsearch him out throughout all the thousands of Judah.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

And they arose, and went to Ziph before Saul: but David and his\r\nmen were<\/i> in the wilderness of Maon, in the plain on the south of\r\nJeshimon. Saul also and his men went to seek him<\/i>. And they told David:\r\nwherefore he came down into a rock, and abode in the wilderness of Maon.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

And when Saul heard that<\/i>, he pursued after David in the\r\nwilderness of Maon. And Saul went on this side of the mountain, and David and\r\nhis men on that side of the mountain: and David made haste to get away for fear\r\nof Saul; for Saul and his men compassed David and his men round about to take\r\nthem. But there came a messenger unto Saul, saying, Haste thee, and come; for\r\nthe Philistines have invaded the land. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Wherefore Saul returned from pursuing after David, and went\r\nagainst the Philistines: therefore they called that place Selahammahlekoth. And\r\nDavid went up from thence, and dwelt in strong holds at Engedi.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

This\r\nis taking a whole lot longer to share than I anticipated.\u00a0 <\/span>There are a series of important events which\r\nbegin to unfold that are a part of the testing process for David in his\r\npreparation to become King of Israel.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>These events are a great lesson for all of us as we learn how to behave,\r\nhow to react in certain situations, how to show compassion when the enemy is\r\nnot worth it in a normal sense.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

You\u2019ll\r\nrecall that the Lord said of David, <\/span>\u201c[He] is a man after\r\nmine own heart.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

David\u2019s\r\nlove for the Lord grew enormously during these years of persecution and seeing\r\nthe daily deliverances of the Lord when his life was under the constant threat\r\nof death.\u00a0 <\/span>We may not be under that kind\r\nof threat as we are being tested, but the trials will nevertheless work the\r\ncharacter of the Lord in us in ways that cannot be duplicated any other way!<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n
