\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Well, I\u2019m hoping I can\r\nwrap up this part of the series today in our look at the life of David and what\r\nhe had to overcome between the time he was anointed by Samuel and took the\r\nthrone of Judah and Benjamin some 13 years later prior to taking the throne of\r\nthe entire nation of Israel.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The overwhelming\r\nmajority of us don\u2019t live our lives on the run until we finally reach that\r\nplace where we get to fulfil God\u2019s destiny for our lives.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Of course, that mostly\r\napplies right now to us pampered Americans.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>I have friends in other countries that I have known throughout the years\r\nwho\u2019ve lived their lives under constant persecution, who\u2019ve also had to be on\r\nthe run for their lives from time to time.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The persecution and\r\nopposition has a real seasoning effect on us, as long as we don\u2019t get angry and\r\nrebel against the circumstances.\u00a0 <\/span>We can\r\npraise and worship the Lord with absolute freedom in the midst of it all and\r\nwatch as God intervenes for us.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

David\r\nis now going to get the test of his life.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Saul is literally going to be in his hand and he will have every\r\nopportunity to get rid of this monster who has done so much to torment him, to\r\ndo evil against him, and make every effort to kill him.\u00a0 <\/span>Watch what unfolds next.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

I Samuel 24:1-22<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>And it came to\r\npass, when Saul was returned from following the Philistines, that it was told\r\nhim, saying, Behold, David is<\/i> in the wilderness of Engedi. Then Saul\r\ntook three thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and went to seek David and\r\nhis men upon the rocks of the wild goats. And he came to the sheepcotes by the\r\nway, where was<\/i> a cave; and Saul went in to cover his feet: and David and\r\nhis men remained in the sides of the cave.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

And the men of David said unto him, Behold the day of which the\r\nLORD said unto thee, Behold, I will deliver thine enemy into thine hand, that\r\nthou mayest do to him as it shall seem good unto thee. Then David arose, and\r\ncut off the skirt of Saul\u2019s robe privily. And it came to pass afterward, that\r\nDavid\u2019s heart smote him, because he had cut off Saul\u2019s skirt. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

<\/o:p><\/span><\/sup><\/p>\r\n\r\n

And he said unto his men, The LORD forbid that I should do this\r\nthing unto my master, the LORD\u2019S anointed, to stretch forth mine hand against\r\nhim, seeing he is<\/i> the anointed of the LORD. So David stayed his servants\r\nwith these words, and suffered them not to rise against Saul. But Saul rose up\r\nout of the cave, and went on his<\/i> way.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

David also arose afterward, and went out of the cave, and cried\r\nafter Saul, saying, My lord the king. And when Saul looked behind him, David\r\nstooped with his face to the earth, and bowed himself.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

And David said to Saul, Whereforehearest thou men\u2019s words,\r\nsaying, Behold, David seeketh thy hurt? Behold, this day thine eyes have seen\r\nhow that the LORD had delivered thee to day into mine hand in the cave: and some<\/i>\r\nbade me<\/i> kill thee: but mine eye<\/i> spared thee; and I said, I will\r\nnot put forth mine hand against my lord; for he is<\/i> the LORD\u2019S anointed.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Moreover, my father, see, yea, see the skirt of thy robe in my\r\nhand: for in that I cut off the skirt of thy robe, and killed thee not, know\r\nthou and see that there is<\/i> neither evil nor transgression in mine hand,\r\nand I have not sinned against thee; yet thou huntest my soul to take it.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The LORD judge between me and thee, and the LORD avenge me of\r\nthee: but mine hand shall not be upon thee. As saith the proverb of the\r\nancients, Wickedness proceedeth from the wicked: but mine hand shall not be\r\nupon thee. After whom is the king of Israel come out? after whom dost thou\r\npursue? after a dead dog, after a flea. The LORD therefore be judge, and judge\r\nbetween me and thee, and see, and plead my cause, and deliver me out of thine\r\nhand.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

And it came to pass, when David had made an end of speaking\r\nthese words unto Saul, that Saul said, Is<\/i> this thy voice, my son David?\r\nAnd Saul lifted up his voice, and wept. And he said to David, Thouart<\/i>\r\nmore righteous than I: for thou hast rewarded me good, whereas I have rewarded\r\nthee evil.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

And thou hast showed this day how that thou hast dealt well with\r\nme: forasmuch as when the LORD had delivered me into thine hand, thou killedst\r\nme not. For if a man find his enemy, will he let him go well away? wherefore\r\nthe LORD reward thee good for that thou hast done unto me this day. And now,\r\nbehold, I know well that thou shalt surely be king, and that the kingdom of\r\nIsrael shall be established in thine hand.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Swear now therefore unto me by the LORD, that thou wilt not cut\r\noff my seed after me, and that thou wilt not destroy my name out of my father\u2019s\r\nhouse. And David sware unto Saul. And Saul went home; but David and his men gat\r\nthem up unto the hold<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

This\r\nentire narrative is a picture of something you wouldn\u2019t see in today\u2019s world,\r\nand yet it reflects the heart of David toward the Lord.\u00a0 <\/span>Saul is literally put in a position where\r\nDavid has a perfect opportunity to kill him.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Had he done so, Saul would no longer have been in a position to torment\r\nhim and persecute him.\u00a0 <\/span>Even though he is\r\nurged to kill Saul, he refuses. The way his conscience affects him, however,\r\nwhen he cutrs off a piece of Saul\u2019s skirt is absolutely amazing.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

David\r\ngets himself to a safe place and then calls out to Saul, awakening him.\u00a0 <\/span>He challenges Saul for his continued intent\r\nto chase him down and kill him even though David has behaved himself with\r\nintegrity and honor towards Saul.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

With\r\nDavid\u2019s challenge to Saul, he becomes very emotional and hit with\r\nconviction.\u00a0 <\/span>He finally confesses that he\r\nknows tht God has anointed David to become King in Israel, and he pleads with\r\nDavid to save alive his seed after him.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>David, of course, has a very strong relationship with Jonathan, Saul\u2019s\r\nson, and has no problem making that promise.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

David\r\nis no dummy.\u00a0 <\/span>He knows how fickle Saul\r\nis, and how worthless his promises are, so when everyone departs, Saul goes\r\nback to his home and his throne but David gets himself to a safe place\r\nagain.\u00a0 <\/span>The phrase used in verse 22, \u201cthe\r\nhold\u201d refers to an area known as Paran.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>We see this duplicated in I Samuel 25:1 where Samuel dies, is buried in\r\nRamah, where the had lived for many years, and David thereafter goes on to\r\nParan.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Paran\r\nis interesting in that it is described generically as \u201cthe hold,\u201d because this\r\nwas an area where the children of Israel wandered for a good part of the 40\r\nyears they were in the wilderness.\u00a0 <\/span>Paran\r\nis described as \u201cthe hold,\u201d or a place of safety because it is a land of caves\r\n\u201cabounding in foliage.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

That\r\nmade it a perfect place of concealment for David and the company of hundreds of\r\npeople who traveled with him. David now has a period of respite from Saul.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Now\r\nwe have a different kind of event.\u00a0 <\/span>David\r\nsends out ten of his men to visit with Nabal, an extremely wealthy man in the\r\narea of Maon, about 7 miles south of Hebron, and request assistance from him\r\nfor those families that are with him.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>They are sent to request food and drink.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Meanwhile, they are given the responsibility of standing with Nabal\u2019s\r\nshepherds, who are in the midst of shearing their sheep, and provide protection\r\nfor them from would-be thieves and robbers.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0When they finally get to speak with Nabal, he insults\r\nthem and he insults David.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

I Samuel 25:10b-11<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Who is<\/i> David?\r\nand who is<\/i> the son of Jesse? there be many servants now a days that\r\nbreak away every man from his master. Shall I then take my bread, and my water,\r\nand my flesh that I have killed for my shearers, and give it<\/i> unto men,\r\nwhom I know not whence they be<\/i>?<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

When\r\nthe ten men return to David with their report of what takes place, David (who\r\nis already tested and wearied to the max) assembles 400 of the soldiers that\r\nare with him, telling them to strap on their swords and get ready to\r\nfight.\u00a0 <\/span>200 of them accompany David in\r\nperson while 200 of them stay behind to protect \u201cthe stuff.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>Nabal\u2019s shepherds realize that their master is\r\nin deep trouble and go to warn Abigail, his wife.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Abigail\r\nis a totally different kind of person.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Nabal is referred to as \u201ca man of Belial,\u201d a term to refer a person as\r\nbeing wicked, unreasoning, incapable of having any discussion with.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

[Kind\r\nof reminds you of the Democratic Party these days, and their riot counterparts,\r\nthe BLM movement and Antifa.}<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Abigail,\r\non the other hand was a woman of character and integrity.\u00a0 <\/span>Here\u2019s how they are referred to in the Word.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

I Samuel 25:3<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0\r\n<\/span><\/span>Now the name of the man was<\/i>Nabal; and the name of his\r\nwife Abigail: and she was<\/i> a woman of good understanding, and of a\r\nbeautiful countenance: but the man was<\/i> churlish and evil in his doings;\r\nand he was<\/i> of the house of Caleb. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Brother!\u00a0 <\/span>Talk about a contrast!\u00a0 <\/span>Talk about a woman of real integrity and\r\nmercy!\u00a0 <\/span>Watch what she does next.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

I Samuel 25:18-31<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0 <\/span>Then Abigail made haste, and took two hundred\r\nloaves, and two bottles of wine, and five sheep ready dressed, and five\r\nmeasures of parched corn<\/i>, and an hundred clusters of raisins, and two\r\nhundred cakes of figs, and laid them<\/i> on asses. And she said unto her\r\nservants, Go on before me; behold, I come after you. But she told not her\r\nhusband Nabal.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

And it was so, as<\/i> she rode on the ass, that she came down\r\nby the covert of the hill, and, behold, David and his men came down against\r\nher; and she met them. Now David had said, Surely in vain have I kept all that\r\nthis fellow<\/i> hath in the wilderness, so that nothing was missed of all\r\nthat pertained<\/i> unto him: and he hath requited me evil for good. So and\r\nmore also do God unto the enemies of David, if I leave of all that pertain<\/i>\r\nto him by the morning light any that pisseth against the wall.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

And when Abigail saw David, she hasted, and lighted off the ass,\r\nand fell before David on her face, and bowed herself to the ground, And fell at\r\nhis feet, and said, Upon me, my lord, upon<\/i> me let this<\/i> iniquity be<\/i>:\r\nand let thine handmaid, I pray thee, speak in thine audience, and hear the\r\nwords of thine handmaid.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Let not my lord, I pray thee, regard this man of Belial, even<\/i>Nabal:\r\nfor as his name is<\/i>, so is<\/i> he; Nabalis<\/i> his name, and folly is<\/i>\r\nwith him: but I thine handmaid saw not the young men of my lord, whom thou\r\ndidst send. Now therefore, my lord, as<\/i> the LORD liveth, and as<\/i>\r\nthy soul liveth, seeing the LORD hath withholden thee from coming to shed<\/i>\r\nblood, and from avenging thyself with thine own hand, now let thine enemies,\r\nand they that seek evil to my lord, be as Nabal. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

And now this blessing which thine handmaid hath brought unto my\r\nlord, let it even be given unto the young men that follow my lord.\u00a0 <\/span>I pray thee, forgive the trespass of thine\r\nhandmaid: for the LORD will certainly make my lord a sure house; because my\r\nlord fighteth the battles of the LORD, and evil hath not been found in thee all<\/i>\r\nthy days. Yet a man is risen to pursue thee, and to seek thy soul: but the soul\r\nof my lord shall be bound in the bundle of life with the LORD thy God; and the\r\nsouls of thine enemies, them shall he sling out, as out<\/i> of the middle of\r\na sling.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

And it shall <\/span>come to pass, when the LORD shall\r\nhave done to my lord according to all the good that he hath spoken concerning\r\nthee, and shall have appointed thee ruler over Israel; That this shall be no\r\ngrief unto thee, nor offence of heart unto my lord, either that thou hast shed\r\nblood causeless, or that my lord hath avenged himself: but when the LORD shall\r\nhave dealt well with my lord, then remember thine handmaid.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\nfinal commentary on this narrative is that Nasbal decided to celebrate the\r\nsuccess of shearing his 3000 sheep and the money that it was going to bring\r\nhim.\u00a0 <\/span>He threw a party and got himself\r\nroyally drunk.\u00a0 <\/span>As he began to sober up\r\nafterward, Abigail told him what she had done with David to spare his\r\nlife.\u00a0 <\/span>Nabal\u2019s heart failed within him at\r\nthe news and he died of heart failure a few days later.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

When\r\nDavid learned that Nabal had died, he sought out Abigail and took her to be his\r\nwife.\u00a0 <\/span>She was the kind of wife he\r\nwanted.\u00a0 <\/span>He must have been desperate for\r\nfemale companionship by this time because he also took Ahinoam of Jezreel (a\r\ntown nearby to Maon) to become a wife to him.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>We sort of get an understanding as to why when we learn that Saul had\r\ntaken Michal from him and given her to another man to be his wife instead of\r\nDavid.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

We\u2019re\r\nnot done with Saul yet.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>David had made\r\nhis headquarters in the hill of Hachilah.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Hachilah was a place located roughly two miles from Maon and Jezreel in\r\nthe hills of the Ziphites.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Saul\r\nhad no idea where David had been hiding.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>The Ziphites thought to endear themselves to Saul (and hopefully be\r\nrewarded by him) so they sent a delegation to Saul to let him know where David\r\nwas hiding.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

In\r\nhis arrogance and stupidity, he decides to come after David with an army of\r\n3,000 soldiers.\u00a0 <\/span>David gets wind of his\r\ncoming into the wilderness of Ziph and sends spies to verify his presence.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

As\r\nsoon as Saul\u2019s presence is verified, David takes Abishai with him and they wait\r\nuntil nighttime to go to where Saul is sleeping.\u00a0 <\/span>Saul\u2019s spear is next to his pillow, and his\r\nwater bag (skin bottle) as well.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

David\r\ncarefully takes both the water and the spear and carefully crosses the valley\r\nso that he is well apart from Saul.\u00a0 <\/span>Now\r\nhe calls out to Abner, who is captain of the armies of Israel.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

I Samuel 26:14-16<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0\u00a0\r\n<\/span><\/span>And David cried to the people, and to Abner the son of Ner,\r\nsaying, Answerest thou not, Abner? Then Abner answered and said, Who art<\/i>\r\nthou that<\/i>criest to the king? <\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

And David said to Abner, Art<\/i>not thou a valiant<\/i>\r\nman? and who is<\/i> like to thee in Israel? wherefore then hast thou not\r\nkept thy lord the king? for there came one of the people in to destroy the king\r\nthy lord. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

This thing is<\/i> not good that thou hast done. As<\/i> the\r\nLORD liveth, ye are<\/i> worthy to die, because ye have not kept your master,\r\nthe LORD\u2019S anointed. And now see where the king\u2019s spear is<\/i>, and the\r\ncruse of water that was<\/i> at his bolster.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Oops!<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Once\r\nagain Saul responds to David\u2019s voice.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>David answers him and rebukes him for his continuance in attempting to\r\ntake his life.\u00a0 <\/span>And Saul does his usual\r\n\u201crepentance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

I Samuel 26:21<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0\u00a0\r\n<\/span><\/span>Then said Saul, I have sinned: return, my son David: for I will\r\nno more do thee harm, because my soul was precious in thine eyes this day:\r\nbehold, I have played the fool, and have erred exceedingly<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

So\r\nSaul returns home and David departs to one of his hiding places.\u00a0 <\/span>This will be the last time that David has to\r\ncontend with Saul.\u00a0 <\/span>David, however,\r\nrealizes that Saul hasn\u2019t changed and that something might trigger him again to\r\ncome after David, so he decides to take his troop into the land of the\r\nPhilistines.\u00a0 <\/span>It is a strange scenario,\r\nconsidering that David has killed the Philistines by the tens of thousands thus\r\nfar, but he offers his services to Achish, the King of Gath.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Achish\r\nis very aware of David\u2019s prowess as a warrior and accepts his offer.\u00a0 <\/span>David uses his time to go out against\r\nlongtime enemies of Israel, the Geshurites, the Gezrites and the\r\nAmalekites.\u00a0 <\/span>He accomplishes what Saul\r\nfailed to do and destroyed them, man and woman, and brought the sheep, the\r\noxen, the asses and the camels and all the fine apparel to Achish.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Taking\r\na momentary detour from our narrative here, we all remember Saul\u2019s visit to the\r\nwitch of Endor and his desire to call forth Samuel from the dead.\u00a0 <\/span>Samuel does appear and asks Saul why he has\r\ndisturbed his rest.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Saul\u2019s\r\nanswer is that he is surrounded by the Philistines, that the Lord will not\r\nanswer his pleas, that the prophets will not communicate on his behalf, that he\r\nhas no dreams and needs to know what to do.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Samuel lets him know that he has some 24 hours to live, and that he and\r\nhis armies are going to fall to the Philistines.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

David\r\nis in the camp of the Philistines who are now surrounding Israel.\u00a0 <\/span>The Philistine princes insist that David\r\ncannot accompany them, that he is a danger to them, so Achish reluctantly sends\r\nhim away.\u00a0 <\/span>This is God\u2019s deliverance for\r\nDavid to prevent him from killing any of the house of Israel.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

One\r\nlast test for David.\u00a0 <\/span>When he and his\r\ncompany returned home to Ziklag, they found that the Amalekites had invaded and\r\ntaken all the inhabitants captive including David\u2019s two wives.\u00a0 <\/span>He called for Abiathar, the priest, to bring\r\nthe priestly ephod so that he could ask the Lord what to do.\u00a0 <\/span>The Lord instructed him to pursue the\r\nAmalekites and recover everyone and everything.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>The chase was successful, he recovered all and destroyed the Amalekites.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\nnext day, war between Israel and the Philistines ensued and both Saul and\r\nJonathan were killed in battle.\u00a0 <\/span>The\r\nelders of Judah and Benjamin called for David and anointed him to become their\r\nking.\u00a0 <\/span>The promises of God to David were\r\nkept.\u00a0 <\/span>It would be another three years\r\nbefore all Israel would anoint David, but he became their king \u2014 the king that\r\nforever was the standard by which Israel was judged.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n
