For the next three weeks, I\u2019d like to tackle a subject that most\r\npeople first think of politics when they hear the word.\u00a0 <\/span>Sure.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>The word does have political ramifications, but that\u2019s not really what I\r\nwant to focus on.\u00a0 <\/span>The concept of liberal\r\nreally plays on our relationship with the Lord, and how we respond to Him.\u00a0 <\/span>Watch!<\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

How do you like today's title?\u00a0 Got\r\nyou guessing?\u00a0 Think I'm going to talk politics?\u00a0 Well, Yes and\r\nNo.\u00a0 The word, \"liberal,\" is a dirty word in today's speech if\r\nyou consider yourself a political \"conservative.\"\u00a0 Today's\r\nliberals -- politically speaking, of course -- are anything but liberal, and\r\nthe newest descriptive term -- \"progressive\": -- is a farce if I've ever\r\nseen one.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Today's Coffee Break, therefore, will be\r\nthe first of at least two -- and maybe three -- discussions on the true nature\r\nof \"liberalism\" and \"conservatism.\"\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

But wait, I'm getting ahead of\r\nmyself.\u00a0 We're not going to talk politics -- not yet, anyway.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Gotta pour my coffee, first.\u00a0 I'm at\r\nthe tail end of the blend I put together a couple weeks ago -- Dark Roasted\r\nColumbian Supremo, mixed with Double-Roasted French and the Kona Coffee\r\nDanielle and Anthony sent us from Hawaii.\u00a0 Got enough for maybe two more\r\npots and I'll have to do another blend, or try something else.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

If you talk to today's\r\n\"liberals\" -- especially those who call themselves Christian, they'll\r\ntell you that Jesus was a Liberal.\u00a0 They're right, of course.\u00a0 He\r\nwas.\u00a0 He just wasn't their kind of liberal.\u00a0 Everything Jesus\r\nespoused is the polar opposite of what today's religious and political liberals\r\nstand for or represent.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Talk to a conservative (politically\r\nspeaking, of course) -- most of whom consider themselves to be Christians -- and\r\nthey'll tell you that by any modern definition, Jesus was a conservative.\u00a0\r\nUhhhh, Sorry, Folks!\u00a0 Jesus was anything but conservative.\u00a0 In the\r\nnext few minutes, let's see if we can properly define these two terms and look\r\nat what Jesus said and did.\u00a0 Then we'll see whether He was liberal or\r\nconservative.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

When we get done with this discussion,\r\nyou may very well re-define who and what you are -- both politically and\r\nspiritually.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Let's get to our dictionary definitions\r\nof these terms before we start.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Webster's Unabridged Dictionary defines\r\n\"conservative\" like this:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

con\u00b7ser\u00b7va\u00b7tive:<\/span><\/b>a<\/span><\/i>., <\/span>(1) <\/span><\/b>conserving, or tending to\r\nconserve; preservative; <\/span>(2) <\/span><\/b>tending to preserve old institutions, methods, customs and the\r\nlike; <\/span>(3) <\/span><\/b>adhering to\r\nwhat is old or established; opposing or resisting change; <\/span>(4) <\/span><\/b>having conservative views,\r\nespousing slow progress; moderate, prudent, safe;\u00a0 n.,<\/i><\/span>(1) <\/span><\/b>a person or thing tending to\r\nconserve; <\/span>(2) <\/span><\/b>one who\r\nwishes to preserve traditions or institutions, and resists innovation or\r\nchange; <\/span>(3) <\/span><\/b>a member of\r\nthe major right-wing parties of Great Britain, Canada and the United States.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

lib\u00b7er\u00b7al: <\/span><\/b>a.,<\/span><\/i>(1) <\/span><\/b>originally, (obs.) <\/i>suitable for a freeman; not\r\nrestricted; <\/span>(2) <\/span><\/b>free to give or bestow, generous, giving largely -- as, a liberal<\/i>\r\ndonor; <\/span>(3)<\/span><\/b> ample,\r\nlarge, abundant;\u00a0 free, not literal or strict; <\/span>(4)<\/span><\/b> not narrow or bigoted;\u00a0\r\nn.,<\/i><\/span>(1) <\/span><\/b>one who\r\nadvocates greater freedom of thought or action; <\/span>(2) <\/span><\/b>one who lives and operates by\r\nliberal<\/i> principles.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

OK.\u00a0 These are the dictionary\r\ndefinitions taken from Webster's Twentieth Century Unabridged.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Now, let's have a look at what Jesus said\r\nand did; and I'll pose some questions.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

John 10:10:<\/span><\/u><\/b>\"The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and\r\nto destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it\r\nmore abundantly.\"<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Question.\u00a0 Is that the statement of\r\na conservative or a liberal?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Let's try the next verse.\u00a0 John\r\n10:11<\/u><\/b> says, <\/span>\"I am the good\r\nshepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.\u00a0 But he that is\r\nan hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf\r\ncoming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth\r\nthe sheep.\"<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Question.\u00a0 Does this sound like\r\nsomeone who has a liberal mindset?\u00a0 The hireling who flees rather than\r\nputting his life on the line: is he a conservative?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

By now -- and we've only gotten started\r\n-- I wouldn't be surprised if I had a few thousand angry looks at me from folks\r\nwho consider themselves \"conservative.\"\u00a0 But we've only just\r\nbegun.\u00a0 Bear with me, folks.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Luke 4:18-19:<\/span><\/u><\/b> The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me\r\nto preach the gospel <\/span>(<\/span>euangelion<\/span><\/i><\/b> -- angelic\r\ntidings, good news)<\/span>to the poor<\/span>(<\/span>ptochos<\/span><\/i><\/b> -- beggar, pauper, public mendicancy)<\/span>;<\/span><\/i><\/b> he hath sent me to\r\nheal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering\r\nof sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the\r\nacceptable year of the Lord.\"<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Oops!\u00a0 Wait a minute!\u00a0 <\/span>\"He hath sent me to preach the good news and angelic\r\ntidings to those who are poor and on public assistance\"<\/span>?\u00a0 If I read that right, Jesus came to preach provision to\r\nthose who were living in poverty and on public assistance.\u00a0 The GOSPEL was\r\nthe provision, NOT money.\u00a0 Those who were on public assistance were living\r\nin poverty and in bondage to the government, with the government as their\r\nsource of supply instead of the Lord God.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

So what was the good news Jesus\r\npreached?\u00a0 You can be free of the system.\u00a0 You can be free of your\r\ndependence on government as your source.\u00a0 You can be free of poverty and\r\nlive an abundant life.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Sounds like a liberal to me!\u00a0 Are\r\nyou still with me?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

But Jesus didn't come to hand out money,\r\nand He sure didn't come preaching taxation so that Rome would have more money\r\nto dispense for its social programs; He came to provide folks with a means to\r\nbe free from the curse that had come upon the earth because of Adam's\r\nsin.\u00a0 Part of that curse was that folks would have to scratch for a\r\nliving.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Take a quick look at the beginnings of\r\nthe curse that came upon the earth.\u00a0 <\/span>\"And\r\nunto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and\r\nhast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying,<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u201cThou shalt not eat of it: cursed\r\nis the ground for thy sake<\/u>; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of\r\nthy life; Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt\r\neat the herb of the field; In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread<\/u>,\r\ntill thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou\r\nart, and unto dust shalt thou return.\"<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

You see it don't you?\u00a0 Adam and Eve\r\nhad never had to work for a living prior to their eviction from the\r\nGarden.\u00a0 In the midst of their daily walk with God, they lacked for\r\nnothing, nothing was broken, and nothing was missing -- in any area of their\r\nlives.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Yup.\u00a0 Jesus came preaching\r\ndeliverance to the captives -- and that includes deliverance from the\r\ncurse.\u00a0 He didn't come preaching that everyone was going to become an\r\ninstant millionaire, but what He did preach was abundance -- in every area of\r\nlife -- liberality, giving (NOT taking), sharing out of agape love, putting\r\none's life on the line for his brother (or sister).<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

In Luke 6:38<\/u><\/b>, Jesus says, <\/span>\"Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure,\r\npressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your\r\nbosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to\r\nyou again.\"<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

'Scuse my bad English, but that don't\r\nsound like \"conservative\" to me!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

A couple of the Webster's Dictionary\r\ndefinitions of \"conservative\" are:tending to preserve old\r\ninstitutions, methods, customs and the like<\/u>; and, adhering to what is\r\nold or established; opposing or resisting change<\/u>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

But listen to what Jesus said.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\"Think not that I am come to\r\ndestroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to\r\nfulfil.\"<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>That\r\nword \"fulfil\" is translated from the Greek, pleroo<\/i><\/b>, which\r\nmeans: to make replete<\/u>, to furnish<\/u>, satisfy and bring to\r\ncompletion<\/u>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Is there anything in that which\r\n\"preserves old institutions\"?\u00a0 Does Jesus' fulfillment of the\r\nLaw mean that He was \"adhering to what is old and established\"?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Well, let's see what He had to see about\r\ntraditions and old institutions, methods and customs.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

This is an episode during Jesus' ministry\r\nwhen the Scribes and Pharisees came asking why His disciples didn't wash their\r\nhands before eating as the Law commanded.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Matthew 15:2-9<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span>\"Then came to\r\nJesus scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, saying, Why do thy\r\ndisciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands\r\nwhen they eat bread.\u00a0 But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also\r\ntransgress the commandment of God by your tradition?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\"For God commanded, saying,\r\nHonour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him\r\ndie the death.\u00a0 But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his\r\nmother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; And honour\r\nnot his father or his mother, he shall be free.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\"Thus have ye made the\r\ncommandment of God of none effect by your tradition.\u00a0 Ye hypocrites, well\r\ndid Esaias prophesy of you, saying, This people draweth nigh unto me with their\r\nmouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.\u00a0\r\nBut in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of\r\nmen.\"<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Doesn't sound much like Jesus appreciated\r\ntheir traditions, does it?\u00a0 Still think Jesus was a\r\n\"conservative\"?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

We might come back to some of the things\r\nthat Jesus said and did, but let's take a quick look at some of the things that\r\nPaul said as he preached the Gospel of Jesus Christ?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

II Corinthians 4:15<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span><\/b>\"For all things\r\nare for your sakes, that the abundant grace<\/u> might through the\r\nthanksgiving of many redound to the glory of God<\/u>.\"\u00a0 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

II Corinthians 9:6-7<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>\"But this I say,\r\nHe which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth\r\nbountifully shall reap also bountifully.\u00a0 Every man according as he\r\npurposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for\r\nGod loveth a cheerful giver.\"<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

II Corinthians 9:8-10<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>\"And God is able\r\nto make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in\r\nall things, may abound to every good work: (As it is written, He hath dispersed\r\nabroad; he hath given to the poor: his righteousness remainethfor ever.\u00a0\r\nNow he that ministereth seed to the sower both minister bread for your food,\r\nand multiply your seed sown, and increase the fruits of your\r\nrighteousness.)\"<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Ummm......Helllllooooo? Can someone\r\nplease tell me where \"conservative\" fits into any of this?\u00a0\r\n\"God is able to make all grace abound toward you.\"\u00a0 ALL\r\ngrace?\u00a0 None missing, none broken?\u00a0 ALL grace?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

And how about this?\u00a0 \"That ye,\r\nALWAYS having ALL SUFFICIENCY in ALL THINGS, may abound to EVERY good\r\nwork.\"\u00a0 Sure.\u00a0 That sounds like \"conservative.\"\u00a0\r\nRiiiiiiigghhhhttt!!!!\u00a0 NOT!!!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

So how is it then, that Christians have\r\nsomehow gotten this cockamamie idea that Christianity represents\r\n\"conservatism\" and \"conservative thought\"?\u00a0 (I'll\r\nanswer this shortly.)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

We continue with some of what Paul\r\nwrote.\u00a0 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

II Corinthians 12:15<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>\"And I will very\r\ngladly spend and be spent for you; though the more abundantly I love you, the\r\nless I be loved.\"<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Ephesians 3:20<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>\"Now unto him\r\nthat is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think,\r\naccording to the power that worketh in us, Unto him be glory in the church by\r\nChrist Jesus throughout all ages, world without end.\u00a0 Amen.\"<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Well, here we go again!\u00a0 \"Able\r\nto do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think\"?\u00a0\r\nEXCEEDING ABUNDANTLY?\u00a0 ABOVE ALL WE ASK OR THINK?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Philippians 2:5-7:<\/span><\/u><\/b>\"Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:\r\nWho, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But\r\nmade himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was\r\nmade in the likeness of men.\"<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Philippians 4:19<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>\"But\r\nmy God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ\r\nJesus.\"<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Now that I've given you a peek into some of the things that\r\nJesus said and did, and the things that Paul preached concerning the Gospel, we\r\nneed to understand why the body of Christ has become \"conservative\"\r\n-- at least by contemporary definition, and why the so-called \"left\"\r\nin society is called \"liberal.\"<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

On second thought, I think I'll leave that discussion for\r\nWednesday.\u00a0 See you then.\u00a0 Meanwhile have a fabulous day!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n
