\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n

This is the second in a series of older Coffee Breaks that I\u2019m\r\nre-publishing while I\u2019m taking time to finish a new series.\u00a0 <\/span>Each one of the experiences reported here\r\nmake it clear that when people make up their minds and settle things in their\r\nspirits, they can make an appointment with God in order to see the finish of\r\nthat which they are asking of the Lord.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Been talking about dealing with evil spirits with\r\nsome people the past few days, and we will come back to that topic later, but\r\ncertain events over this past weekend reminded me of something I just thought\r\nyou might find interesting.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

We all know about making appointments, and we all\r\nknow that there is appointed unto man a day of death, but have you ever thought\r\nabout making an appointment to die \u2013 or even making other kinds of appointments\r\nwith the Lord?<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Let me share with you a few.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

I was thinking back to the first time I ever heard\r\nof someone making an appointment with God.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Dory and Jenny Pieters were two sisters who married\r\ntwo brothers, both of whom were medical doctors.\u00a0 <\/span>Between them, they had five daughters, Laura,\r\nAlida, Twila, Terry and Patty.\u00a0 <\/span>You never\r\nmet such a bunch of beauties in your whole life.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

They were\/are one of the closest-knit families\r\nyou\u2019ve ever seen.\u00a0 <\/span>That said, the day\r\ncame when Dory and Jenny were exposed to the Gospel and made a decision to accept\r\nJesus Christ into their lives.\u00a0 <\/span>The five\r\ngirls followed suit. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Laura was hardly bigger than a minute when she\r\naccepted Jesus Christ, and Terry and Patty were in their early teens.\u00a0 <\/span>Twila was just behind Terry, and Alida was\r\nbehind Twila by a couple of years or so.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

It wasn\u2019t very long after the ladies and daughters\r\naccepted Jesus Christ that both brothers\/husbands decided they didn\u2019t want any\r\npart of their families\u2019 relationship with the Lord; and both brothers divorced\r\nboth sisters at the same time. \u00a0<\/span>It was a\r\ntraumatic experience for the two sisters, and their daughters, and because all\r\nof them had wonderful singing voices and had been singing together as a family,\r\ntheir music became an outlet for them to deal with the emotional upheaval.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Dory, Jenny & girls all traveled as The Singing\r\nStairsteps.\u00a0 <\/span>Not too long after the\r\ndivorces, songwriter, musician and choral leader, Audrey Mieir, introduced me\r\nto them, and in the months that followed (I was Minister of Youth at Bethel\r\nUnion Church in Duarte, California at the time) I bought a home right across\r\nthe street from Dory and Jenny.\u00a0 <\/span>We had a\r\nreally musical neighborhood in those days.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

One of my friends was the Gospel singer, musician,\r\nand recording artist, Andrae Crouch.\u00a0 <\/span>He\r\nwould come over to our house and bang away on our old grand piano.\u00a0 <\/span>It didn\u2019t take long for the music to waft its\r\nway across the street.\u00a0 <\/span>Between Andrae\u2019s\r\npiano playing and singing, my guitar picking and singing, and the Singing\r\nStairsteps, we had ourselves one noisy neighborhood \u2013 musically, that is.\u00a0 <\/span>It was wonderful!<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Dory and Jenny closed off their garage and turned\r\nit into a recreation room where the neighborhood kids could gather every\r\nmorning before going to school.\u00a0 <\/span>I led\r\nthese kids in morning devotions before they left for school.\u00a0 <\/span>Of course, for them to have the devotions,\r\nthey had to miss the school bus, so we used three different station wagons or\r\nvans to ferry the kids off to their respective schools after reading and\r\npraying with each of them.\u00a0 <\/span>Our music was\r\na big attraction, and it didn\u2019t take long before we had as many as thirty kids\r\ngathering in that converted garage each morning for devotions.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Not long after the divorces, Dory and Jenny began\r\nto realize that there had to be a whole lot more in their lives in the way of\r\nspiritual growth that needed to take place.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>There was a hunger for the presence of the Lord that knew no\r\nbounds.\u00a0 <\/span>In the midst of their travels,\r\nthey were asked to come to San Diego and sing in a Pentecostal church.\u00a0 <\/span>It was the first time they had ever been exposed\r\nto the baptism of the Holy Spirit.\u00a0 <\/span>What\r\nthey saw and heard the night they sang in that church magnified the spiritual\r\nhunger beyond all bounds.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Afterwards, they talked about the Holy Spirit among\r\nthemselves as a family and decided this \u201cbaptism\u201d was something they should\r\nhave.\u00a0 <\/span>Dory got on the phone as soon as\r\nthey got home that night and called the pastor of that San Diego church.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u201cBrother, we would like to make an appointment with\r\nyou to receive the Holy Spirit.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>The\r\npastor was both stunned and amused.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cYou\r\nwhat?\u00a0 <\/span>You want to make an appointment\u2026to\r\nreceive the baptism of the Holy Spirit?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Dory assured him that she was serious and knew what\r\nshe was talking about.\u00a0 <\/span>She told him they\r\nhad another singing engagement in San Diego later that same week.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u201cIf it\u2019s all right with you,\u201d she said, \u201cwe\u2019d like\r\nto meet together in your office next Tuesday afternoon at 2:30.\u00a0 <\/span>You can lay hands on each one of us, and we\r\nwill receive the Holy Spirit.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Wow!\u00a0 <\/span>This is novel!\u00a0 <\/span>Never heard of anything like this.\u00a0 <\/span>Making an appointment with God.\u00a0 <\/span>This ought to be different.<\/span><\/i>\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cOK.\u00a0 <\/span>Sure.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>I\u2019ll expect you next Tuesday afternoon.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>2:30.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Dory, Jenny, and girls all showed up on\r\nschedule.\u00a0 <\/span>The pastor laid his hands on\r\neach one of them, and each of them in succession received the baptism of the\r\nHoly Spirit with the accompanying evidence of speaking in tongues.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

That initial experience with the Holy Spirit\r\nunleashed a flow of new music and a new dimension in their walk with the Lord\r\nin the weeks and months that followed.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Their experience with the Holy Spirit inspired Dory and Jenny to write a\r\nnew song (lots of them, actually), and they called me up one afternoon and\r\nasked me to come over and listen to it.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

They began singing, \u201cThat magic touch\u2026.that changed\r\nmy life one day\u2026.That magic touch \u2026.that kept my feet from going astray\u2026\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>And on and on the song went.\u00a0 <\/span>Problem was, it was too slow.\u00a0 <\/span>So I said to them, \u201cHang on, girls.\u00a0 <\/span>Let me get my guitar.\u00a0 <\/span>Let\u2019s see if we can put a little life in this\r\nsong.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

I ran across the street and picked up my guitar and\r\ncame back over.\u00a0 <\/span>They started singing it\r\nagain, and this time I put a Latin beat to the song.\u00a0 <\/span>The new, up-tempoed song became a staple in\r\ntheir repertoire, and I recorded a guitar track that they could take with them\r\nin their travels.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Jump ahead a few years to our CBN years in\r\nFairbanks.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Besides serving as Senior Pastor of the House of\r\nPraise and President of CBN-Alaska, Inc., I also served as an advisor to the\r\narea board for Women\u2019s Aglow International.\u00a0\u00a0\r\n<\/span>The Women\u2019s Aglow board decided to have a ladies\u2019 retreat at Chena Hot\r\nSprings.\u00a0 <\/span>As a pastor and an advisor,\r\nthey wanted my participation in the retreat, and I was able to help out in the\r\nmusic of the retreat as well.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

As the weekend retreat neared, two ladies\r\napproached me and asked if they could make an appointment with me to be\r\nbaptized in water at Chena Hot Springs.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Not a bad idea in Fairbanks, Alaska, if you know what I mean.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>I contacted the resort management and made\r\narrangements to have the use of their largest pool (80-degree water) for the\r\nSaturday afternoon.\u00a0 <\/span>3:00 PM was the\r\nappointed time for the water baptism, and the two ladies in question showed up\r\nfor their appointment.\u00a0 <\/span>So did about 20\r\nothers including two of the ladies\u2019 husbands.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

I\u2019d never done water baptisms by appointment\r\nbefore, but I wasn\u2019t disappointed.\u00a0 <\/span>Those\r\nfolks came up out of the water drenched in the presence of the Lord.\u00a0 <\/span>The shine on their faces was a whole lot more\r\nthan water-shine!\u00a0 <\/span>Some of them came up\r\nout of the water speaking in tongues.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>They got baptized in the Holy Spirit while they were being baptized in\r\nwater.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Let me talk about a different kind of appointment,\r\nnow.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

A Canadian pastor and prophetic teacher who had a\r\ngreat influence on me during the Charismatic Renewal of the 1960\u2019s, 1970\u2019s and\r\n1980\u2019s was a fellow by the name of Ern Baxter.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>At one time Pastor of Canada\u2019s largest church in Surrey, British\r\nColumbia, Ern had a gift for putting the Gospel into terms common folks could\r\nidentify with.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

He attributed much of his growth in the Lord, and\r\nhis success as a pastor to his mother whom he sometimes called \u201ca tough old\r\nbird\u201d \u2013 a woman who absolutely knew her place in the Kingdom of God.\u00a0 <\/span>When Mrs. Baxter reached her eighties (and I\r\nforget the actual year this happened), she called Ern and the rest of her\r\nfamily together and announced that she had made an appointment to meet the\r\nLord.\u00a0 <\/span>The family was puzzled by her\r\nphraseology because they knew that she already knew the Lord.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u201cNo,\u201d she explained, \u201cI\u2019ve made an appointment to\r\ndie.\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019ve told the Lord I\u2019m ready, and\r\nHe is taking me home to be with Him.\u201d\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Mrs. Baxter was such an integral part of the family\u2019s life that Ern\r\nobjected.\u00a0 <\/span>She pooh-poohed his objections\r\nand gave him instructions on what to do with certain family items and the\r\ndisposition of her estate.\u00a0 <\/span>She told Ern\r\nthat he and his wife, Ruth, were to meet her on a certain day at a certain\r\ntime.\u00a0 <\/span>(Sorry, but I\u2019ve forgotten the day\r\nand time.)<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Sure enough, Ern and Ruth showed up at Mrs.\r\nBaxter\u2019s house on the appointed day.\u00a0 <\/span>She\r\nhad a huge smile on her face.\u00a0 <\/span>She was\r\nsitting in her old rocking chair, rocking back and forth.\u00a0 <\/span>There was nothing weak or sickly about her or\r\nher countenance that day.\u00a0 <\/span>But she\u2019d made\r\nher appointment, and she intended to keep it.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

After some last-minute instructions to Ern concerning\r\nhis preaching, she pulled her feet up off the floor onto the rocker extensions,\r\nlaid her head back in the chair, and was gone.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Just like that!\u00a0 <\/span>She had made her\r\nappointment with the Lord, and both of them kept it.\u00a0 <\/span>She chose the moment to exit this world and\r\nsurrender her spirit to the Lord.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

My dad\u2019s sister and our beloved aunt, Avis Daniel,\r\nwas just about like that.\u00a0 <\/span>The only\r\ndifference was that she was not in good health, having been suffering with\r\ncongestive heart failure.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Della was on the road traveling in Mississippi,\r\nGeorgia, Alabama and South Carolina doing jewelry shows, and had been keeping\r\nin contact with Auntie A.\u00a0 <\/span>(That was what\r\nwe called her.)\u00a0 <\/span>Nearing the end of her\r\nrun just prior to the Christmas season in mid-November 2003, she called Auntie\r\nA and told her that she was going to fly to Santa Clara (California) and pick\r\nher up, and bring her to south Texas to be with us.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Auntie A fussed about leaving her two dogs and cat,\r\nand Della told her that we would just bring the pets with her. \u00a0<\/span>So she went out and purchased another portable\r\nkennel, and picked up some supplies she thought she\u2019d need in Texas.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

In those days, I was on the phone nearly every day\r\nwith Auntie A, checking up on her, making sure everything was OK, and that her\r\nneeds were being tended to.\u00a0 <\/span>First week\r\nof December, she went through some pretty painful bouts and had difficulty\r\nbreathing.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

During that week, I was pretty busy campaigning (in\r\nmy run for Congress), and missed a few days of talking on the phone.\u00a0 <\/span>On Sunday, she called me.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u201cReg, I\u2019ve decided that it\u2019s time to go home.\u00a0 <\/span>There really isn\u2019t any reason for me to come\r\nto Texas.\u00a0 <\/span>There\u2019s nothing that I need to\r\ndo down there, and I\u2019ve finished everything the Lord has instructed me to\r\ndo.\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019m done.\u00a0 <\/span>I want to go home this week.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

I couldn\u2019t believe what I was hearing.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cNOOOO, Auntie A!\u00a0 <\/span>Noooo!\u00a0\r\n<\/span>We\u2019re not ready to let you go, yet.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>There\u2019s plenty for you to do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Her voice, though weakened by the physical\r\nproblems, was firm.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cNo, Honey,\u201d she\r\nsaid.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cIt\u2019s time for me to go.\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019m going to get a few things in order this\r\nweek, and I don\u2019t want you praying against me.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Don\u2019t you go praying for the Lord to keep me here.\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019m done, and I\u2019m going home.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

She meant it, too.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Come Saturday night, she gathered herself together, combed her hair,\r\nfixed herself up, set out some papers of importance and things she thought we\r\nought to know about, went to bed, pulled the covers neatly up to her chin,\r\nfolded them back, crossed her arms and went to sleep with a smile on her face.\u00a0 <\/span>She\u2019d made her appointment with the Lord, and\r\nkept it.\u00a0 <\/span>That\u2019s how the neighbor found\r\nher the next morning when she came over to check on her.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

I\u2019ve got lots of these kinds of stories \u2013 folks\r\nwho\u2019ve made appointments to get saved, folks who\u2019ve made appointments to be\r\nbaptized in water, folks who\u2019ve made appointments to be healed, folks who\u2019ve\r\nmade appointments to receive the Holy Spirit, and \u2013 of course \u2013 folks who\u2019ve\r\nmade appointments to go home to be with the Lord.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

It\u2019s a funny thing about these kinds of\r\nappointments.\u00a0 <\/span>Something happens in a\r\nperson.\u00a0 <\/span>Call it faith.\u00a0 <\/span>It becomes a certainty between them and the\r\nLord Jesus Christ.\u00a0 <\/span>No matter what the\r\nappointment is for, there is both faith and a determination that both ends are\r\nkeeping that appointment.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

One last story for today involves a woman (I\u2019ll\r\ncall her Elsa, for the sake of this story) in Anchorage who was dying of\r\ncancer.\u00a0 <\/span>The doctors had given her up,\r\nand \u2013 sadly \u2013 so had her husband.\u00a0 <\/span>He was\r\njust waiting for her to die.\u00a0 <\/span>Funny\r\nthing, though.\u00a0 <\/span>She hadn\u2019t given up on\r\nthe Lord.\u00a0 <\/span>Neither had her two young\r\nsons, whose faith was bursting at the seams.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Elsa called me up one day and asked if Della and I\r\nwould come over and lay hands on her.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cI\r\nwant to make an appointment with the Lord for my healing,\u201d she said.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cI know God isn\u2019t finished with me\u2026.not yet,\r\nanyway!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\r\n\u00a0 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

The appointment was made for the following evening\r\nat 7:00PM.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Della and I went over as promised and met with her,\r\nher husband and her two sons at 7:00 PM.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>You know how it is with folks who are dying with cancer.\u00a0 <\/span>Their faces are sunken in, the color of their\r\nskin is almost white, and they look like death warmed over.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

That was the way Elsa looked when we arrived.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

I like appointments!\u00a0 <\/span>Especially when those appointments are made\r\nwith the Lord!\u00a0 <\/span>There is a release of\r\nfaith that\u2019s almost indescribable.\u00a0 <\/span>To\r\nborrow a phrase I used to hear Oral Roberts use 30 or 40 years ago, when you\r\ntouch someone who\u2019s made an appointment with Jesus Christ, that touch becomes\r\n\u201ca point of contact\u201d between them and the Lord.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>When the Lord touches you, look out!\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Things are going to happen!<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

They did, too, for Elsa!\u00a0 <\/span>When we left her later that evening, her\r\nsunken cheeks were filling out, the color had returned to her face, and it was\r\nobvious that the Lord had kept Elsa\u2019s appointment with Him.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Della and I moved from Anchorage not too long\r\nthereafter, but we stayed in contact with Elsa for at least a couple of\r\nyears.\u00a0 <\/span>For a woman who was supposed to\r\nhave been dead from cancer, she was very much alive.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n
