you blessed people!<span\r\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019m at work in a new series, and not quite\r\nfinished with it yet.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>That said, For the\r\nnext few weeks, I\u2019m going to bring back some Coffee breaks that were originally\r\nwritten, some as much as 14 years ago.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\r\n<\/span>These Coffee Breaks still carry a message to the body of Christ that is\r\nas valid today as it was 14 years ago.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-indent:.25in;line-height:\r\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Let\r\nme share with you today, the story of a man whose life impacted me greatly, not\r\nto mention the lives of my parents.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>In\r\nfact, Dad used to say that if it were not for this man, it is unlikely we\u2019d\r\nhave ever gone to Alaska.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>The\r\nyear was 1891.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>It was a hard winter \u2013\r\none of those kind of winters where it turns cold early and where, under normal\r\ncircumstances because of the cold temperatures, you tend to get less snow.<span\r\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>This winter was not one of the winters with\r\nless snow \u2013 especially on Wrangel Island.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\r\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Situated\r\nnearly 900 miles straight west of Barrow, Alaska in the Chukchi Sea, north of\r\nthe Siberian Peninsula, Wrangel Island was one of those remote places in the\r\nworld occupied only by the Inupiat \u2013 and then used only as a primary base from\r\nwhich to hunt seal, walrus and whales, catch the occasional Eider Duck and\r\nArctic Tern, and fish during the three or four months of the year when the\r\nrivers and lakes weren\u2019t frozen over.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Alaksurak\r\nand Kignak were husband and wife. (Don\u2019t try to pronounce their names, it\u2019ll\r\ndrive you crazy.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Our English spelling\r\nonly approximates the actual pronunciation.)<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\r\n<\/span>They struggled for an existence in conditions that we would consider\r\nimpossible.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>The\r\nwinter of 1891 was no exception.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Because\r\nof the early snow and hard freeze, Alaksurak had not been able catch enough\r\ngame to last him and his wife through the winter. By November, with the dark\r\nseason approaching quickly, his supply of fish and seal meat was running\r\nlow.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Finding the occasional caribou, or\r\nhunting the polar bear in those conditions was increasingly difficult.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Kignak\r\nwas expecting a child, and the day came when she gave birth.<span\r\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Alaksurak returned from an unfruitful day of\r\nhunting for seal to find that he was a father.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\r\n<\/span>\u201cWe can\u2019t keep him,\u201d he said to Kignak.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\r\n<\/span>\u201cPut him in the snow.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Eskimo\r\ntradition for centuries had demanded that if children were born into a world\r\nwhere there was an insufficient supply of food, they were considered\r\n\u201cextra.\u201d<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>They were expendable.<span\r\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>One could always have more children later\r\nwhen conditions permitted.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Girls,\r\nespecially, were considered non-essential.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Boys could grow up and begin hunting when they were six or seven years\r\nold, but girls\u2026..well, that was different.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\r\n<\/span>They were simply put out on the ice floes to freeze to death.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>(This\r\nis an aside from my story, but this is essentially how I came by my first\r\ndaughter, Deborah.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Her Eskimo mother\r\ncouldn\u2019t care for her and came to me before she was born, asking me if I would\r\nadopt her at birth.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>My first reaction was\r\nto not adopt, but after the baby was born, the grandparents again approached me\r\nto adopt saying, \u201cshe\u2019s just extra.\u201d<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>I\r\nadopted her when she was five months old.)<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>For\r\nKignak, the thought of putting her newborn son in the snow was absolutely\r\nintolerable.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Traditions aside, she felt\r\nthat this little boy was a gift from a God for whom she had great reverence,\r\nbut didn\u2019t know.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>\u201cPut\r\nhim in the snow,\u201d Alaksurak again demanded.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\r\n<\/span>\u201cWe have no food for him.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Better\r\nhe should freeze to death now than suffer starvation with us.\u201d<span\r\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>It went against every native tradition, but\r\nKignak stood her ground.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cNo!<span\r\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>We will have enough food.<span\r\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>You will see.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Thus\r\ndid a little boy come into this world who at first was given only one name,\r\nPatkotak.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Somehow, the family made it\r\nthrough that winter, and the next, and the next.<span\r\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Patkotak was joined in life by more brothers,\r\nand they grew to become hunters like their father.<span\r\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'>\r\n<span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>\r\n<span\r\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Surnames\r\nwere unnecessary in those days.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Everyone\r\nhad only one name.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>It didn\u2019t matter,\r\nreally.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Because of the extreme\r\nconditions and incredibly hard life, average life expectancy ranged between 28\r\nand 35 years.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Anyone older than 35 was\r\nconsidered quite old!<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>As\r\nthe years went by, Alaksurak and Kignak took their family across the Chukchi\r\nSea toward Wainwright and Barrow, traveling by dog sled.<span\r\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Barrow, it turned out, was a prime hunting ground.<span\r\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>As the farthest north tip of land on the\r\ncontiguous North American continent, it provided an ideal place for the\r\ncurrents in the Arctic Ocean to bring whales, walrus, ooguruk (a very large\r\nbearded seal) and other sea life.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>It was\r\nthe path of natural migration for Eider Ducks and the Arctic Tern, both of\r\nwhich served as a staple in the diet of the Inupiat.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>In\r\nthe late 1890\u2019s, a Presbyterian missionary by the name of Sheldon Jackson made\r\nhis way to Barrow on one of the San Francisco-based<span\r\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>whaling ships that plied those waters in\r\nsearch of the bowhead or baleen whales.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\r\n<\/span>He established a mission at Barrow where the young Patkotak was exposed\r\nto the Gospel of Jesus Christ for the first time in his life.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Sheldon\r\nJackson moved on to establish other missions, and called for Dr. Horatio Marsh\r\nand his wife to take the mission in Barrow.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\r\n<\/span>The Marshes established a public school and began to teach the children\r\nof the community to read, write, and learn basic arithmetic.<span\r\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>That wasn\u2019t easy, considering that \u2013 except\r\nfor the whalers who stopped occasionally \u2013 the language of the region was\r\nInupiat, or some other dialect of the Inuit.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Mrs.\r\nMarsh became young Patkotak\u2019s first teacher, and taught him to speak\r\nEnglish.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>One day she asked him, \u201cDo you\r\nhave any other name besides Patkotak?\u201d<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\r\n<\/span>He said, \u2018No.\u201d<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cThen we are going\r\nto name you after the apostle Paul.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>From\r\nnow on, you will be known as Paul Patkotak.\u201d<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\r\n<\/span>The name stuck, and in later years everyone would realize that it was\r\nprophetic.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>In\r\n1911, Paul began a trek south to sell a growing pile of valuable furs.<span\r\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Traveling first by dog team, then by whaling\r\nship, and finally by one of the ships owned by the Seattle-based Alaska\r\nSteamship Company, he eventually made it to Seattle.<span\r\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>He had to trade some of his valuable Arctic\r\nBlue Fox furs for his transportation, but he still arrived with 14 pelts to\r\nsell.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>At roughly $5.00 per pelt, that\r\nwould give him a fair amount of money, and he could exist for a long time on\r\nit.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>The\r\nChristian foundations that had been laid in his life by the Marshes now began\r\nto be built upon as he sat through two winters at what was then called Seattle\r\nFree Methodist Seminary (now Seattle Pacific University).<span\r\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>In 1913, he went to Portland where he\r\nhappened upon an Apostolic Faith mission.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Here, he was exposed to the outpouring of the Holy Spirit which had\r\nbegun at the Azusa Street Mission in Los Angeles in 1906.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>The\r\ninfilling of the Holy Spirit set ablaze a passion for Jesus Christ and a\r\nburning desire to see salvation come to family and friends scattered from Cape\r\nPrince of Wales to Tuktoyaktuk in the Northwest Territories and even westward\r\nto campsites in the Amundsen Gulf.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Now\r\nabout 25 years old, Paul headed back north to share that fire burning within\r\nhim.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>His immediate family and friends\r\nhad accepted Jesus Christ at the Presbyterian mission in Barrow, and they were\r\nglad to see his return.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>They were not\r\nglad, however, to see that young Paul was a firebrand.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>\u201cYou\u2019ve\r\nbecome a fanatic,\u201d they complained.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>The\r\nMarshes were gone from Barrow, but other missionaries were there who had heard\r\nabout Paul from the Marshes.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>They were\r\nglad to meet him, but puzzled by this unusual presence they felt with him.<span\r\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>When he opened his mouth to share the Gospel\r\nwith others in the Inupiat language, however, it was the first time many of\r\nthem had heard the message of salvation in their own tongue.<span\r\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>The new missionaries welcomed Paul as a\r\nfellow-minister of the Gospel despite the fact that he held no papers with any\r\norganization.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Paul\r\nfelt that the good news of Jesus Christ needed to get outside the four walls of\r\nthe church and looked for a place to begin preaching.<span\r\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>10 or 12 miles north of the village of Barrow\r\nwas a sand spit known as Point Barrow.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\r\n<\/span>It was a narrow strip of land that tailed out to the east where hunters\r\nliked to congregate.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>It was a perfect\r\nspot to hunt birds.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>So Paul set up a\r\ncampsite at Point Barrow where he began to preach the gospel to his\r\nfellow-Inupiat folks.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Everyone\r\nsmiled as he preached and nodded their heads in affirmation of his message, but\r\nfew actually responded to the invitation to accept Jesus Christ.<span\r\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>In the years that followed, he met a Canadian\r\nInuit woman named Ethel.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>The love\r\nbetween them was nearly instantaneous, and they married soon thereafter.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Now\r\nPaul had a companion, a counterpart, someone who loved him and loved the Lord\r\nJesus Christ as much as he did.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>She\r\ndefied native convention, traveling with him as he went from village to\r\nvillage, campsite to campsite, preaching and teaching.<span\r\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>When she became pregnant, it was apparent that\r\nthey needed a more permanent home, and Ethel set up housekeeping for them in\r\nBarrow.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>She went to work as a teacher\u2019s\r\naide \u2013 again defying native convention.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Paul\r\ncontinued his travels by dog team across the arctic coast, even reaching Banks\r\nIsland and Victoria Island in the far north arctic waters only a few hundred\r\nmiles from the North Pole.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Everywhere he\r\nwent, he preached, he prayed, he interceded, he invited folks to come to know\r\nJesus Christ.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>And, for the most part,\r\npeople listened intently, clapped their hands when he finished preaching and\r\npraying for them, smiled cordially at his presentation, and ignored the message\r\nof salvation.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>In\r\nthe meantime, Ethel bore him five children, Billy, Simeon, Steven, Elizabeth\r\nand Olive.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Paul began to reduce the\r\namount of time he traveled from village to village in order to be with his\r\ngrowing family, but he continued his travels nonetheless.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Wainwright\r\nbecame home to Paul, Ethel and their children.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\r\n<\/span>The lack of response from the native community was discouraging, but he\r\ncontinued undaunted.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>As his sons and\r\ndaughters became teenagers, they found themselves ridiculed by their\r\ngeneration.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Their father, after all, <b\r\nstyle='mso-bidi-font-weight:normal'><i style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>was<\/i><\/b>\r\nan odd duck among the Inupiat and the Inuit.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Shamanism and witchcraft had been so much a part of their culture for\r\ncenturies that the message of Jesus Christ and deliverance from such demonic\r\nactivity was untenable.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>The\r\ndemonic roots of shamanism were so ingrained in their DNA that they feared\r\nanything which took them away from it.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Fear ruled the north.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>The\r\nFear of Death, the Fear of Evil, the Fear of Man all pervaded the culture and\r\nlifestyle of the north.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>The fact that\r\nPaul Patkotak exhibited none of those fears made him a person to be feared.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>As\r\nthe years continued, Paul\u2019s children found that it was easier just to go along\r\nwith cultural tide and drifted into the practices of past generations.<span\r\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Paul and Ethel were brokenhearted, but\r\nabsolutely determined that their children were going to know Jesus Christ as\r\nthey knew Him.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Eventually, Paul \u2013 now in\r\nhis fifties \u2013 restricted his travels from village to village, only traveling\r\nand preaching as he felt specifically instructed by the Holy Spirit.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>1957\r\ncame and Paul was now past his 65<sup>th<\/sup> birthday.<span\r\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Barrow had become our home.<span\r\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Dad was enlarging the church built a couple\r\nyears before.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Someone else had finally\r\ncome to Barrow to preach that same message Paul had been preaching for years\r\nand years \u2013 the message that the infilling of the Holy Spirit as it occurred on\r\nthe day of Pentecost was still available to Christians in the same way, and\r\nwith the same demonstration as had occurred nearly 2,000 years before.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>I\u2019ve\r\nalready shared with you in a previous Coffee Break how the Holy Spirit was\r\npoured out in Barrow in a manner that rivaled anything you can read in the book\r\nof Acts.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s now the late fall of 1957,\r\nand the move of the Holy Spirit is in full bloom.<span\r\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Steven Patkotak, Paul\u2019s son, has been out\r\nhunting and as he returns to Barrow sees the shaft of light over the\r\nchurch.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>His wife, Jane, has already been\r\nin those meetings.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>She has no way to\r\ntell Steven what has happened to her and how she has been changed by the\r\npresence of the Lord.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>The\r\nvisible display over the church drew Steven immediately.<span\r\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>He unloaded his dog sled of his hunting gear\r\nand game, and came straight to the church.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\r\n<\/span>That night, he too found the peace that had escaped him for most of his\r\nlife.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>He found the same joy his father,\r\nPaul, had always displayed, always talked about, but he had never experienced\r\nbecause of his personal rebellion in his youth.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Word\r\nspread to Wainwright, of course, of what had been happening.<span\r\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Paul couldn\u2019t wait for a bush plane and\r\nharnessed his dog team.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Driving his dogs\r\nthe 94 miles from Wainwright, he arrived in Barrow in time for one of the\r\nevening meetings.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>As he walked into the\r\nchurch and saw the place packed almost to the walls with people singing,\r\nrejoicing, praising God, the tears burst forth on his face like a geyser.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Once\r\nhe entered the church, he never stopped until he had stepped over people seated\r\non the floor to make his way to the front.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\r\n<\/span>He grabbed my father by the shoulders, hugged him and wept.<span\r\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cBrother Capener!<span\r\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Brother Capener!<span\r\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>You are the answer to forty years of prayer\r\nand intercession.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Watching\r\nPaul Patkotak hug my father that night and weep tears of unutterable joy, I had\r\nno idea of the foundations he had laid, nor the years he had labored with so\r\nlittle to show.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>In the weeks, months,\r\nand years that followed, Paul shared with us how he had prayed, how he had\r\npreached, how he had traveled across the arctic slope to share the message of\r\nsalvation and the baptism of the Holy Spirit.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Paul\r\nhad a simple, but very profound faith.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\r\n<\/span>He had the goods to back his faith.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Paul Patkotak had been transformed some 40 years before from a young man\r\nsteeped in shamanism in a culture of fear to a man vibrant in his faith and\r\nconfidence toward Jesus Christ.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Though\r\nfew listened to him during those years he traveled and preached, and though\r\neven fewer still responded to his message of faith and power, he never once\r\nlost sight of the need for the transforming life in Christ among his\r\npeople.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>He never ceased to pray and\r\nintercede daily for his family, for his friends, and for people who dotted the\r\nnorthland.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Paul\r\nPatkotak was a modern-day apostle Paul.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Once the spiritual dam broke, and we saw the outpouring of the Holy\r\nSpirit begin in Barrow, others followed my father.<span\r\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Paul Bills came behind us in Barrow.<span\r\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>There was Cecelia Piper who went to\r\nWainwright.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>There was Agnes Rodli who\r\nwent to Kaktovik, and on to Tuktoyaktuk.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\r\n<\/span>There was Don Webster, the Wycliffe Bible translator who spent years in\r\nWainwright, translating the Bible into the Inupiat language.<span\r\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>There was Dwain McKenzie (whom I pastored\r\nwith on two occasions) who twice ministered in Barrow and also served at Point\r\nHope and Fort Yukon.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Paul\r\nPatkotak served as my father\u2019s translator in Barrow, then in Wainwright when we\r\nmoved there to build a church, and again at Point Hope for a time when we moved\r\nthere to build a church.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>He was able to\r\nsee with his own eyes the transformation of hundreds, if not thousands, of\r\npeople who had listened to him and not responded, along with those who had\r\nmocked and ridiculed his faith.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>He saw\r\nas his own sons and daughters came to know Jesus Christ, experiencing the faith\r\nand power of Jesus Christ in their lives as he had known.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Comparing\r\nnotes with Paul one day, we realized that there was not one place where we\r\nbuilt in Alaska where Paul had not stopped at some point in his journeys and\r\npreached.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>When Dad took note of the day and\r\ntime that God had called him in an audible voice and said to him, \u201cI want you\r\nto go to Alaska for me,\u201d he realized that God\u2019s call came when Paul began to\r\nintercede for the people he was preaching to.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Paul\r\nhad wept and said, \u201cBrother Capener, you are the answer to my prayers.\u201d<span\r\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Dad, in turn, said to Paul, \u201cBrother Paul, I\r\nwouldn\u2019t be in Alaska if it were not for you and your faithful\r\nintercession.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>The harvest we see and are\r\nreaping is the product of your sowing and tears.<span\r\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>God has heard your cries and we are\r\nhere.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>And the Holy Spirit is being\r\npoured out.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>I\r\nlook back to my years of ministry in Alaska and consider the miracles I have\r\nseen.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>I consider my years involved in\r\nbringing Christian television broadcasting to Alaska.<span\r\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Lives were changed.<span\r\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Communities were transformed.<span\r\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>The arctic today may yet be an inhospitable\r\nplace in terms of climate, but the spirit of Alaska has changed.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:2.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:\r\n.25in;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Paul\r\nPatkotak, the modern apostle Paul, went to be with the Lord just after his 91<sup>st<\/sup>\r\nbirthday in November, 1982.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>The message\r\nhe preached, and the gallons of tears he shed on behalf of Alaskans and\r\nnorthern Canadians for some 70 years, are directly responsible for the\r\ntransformation that continues to sweep through the north.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=MsoNormal
