\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n

We\u2019ve been talking\r\nabout the concept of holiness, but let\u2019s get into the Hebrew text to look at\r\nthis word a bit better and see if we can grasp the simplicity of holiness.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Holiness\r\nis not complicated.\u00a0 <\/span>There\u2019s nothing\r\nmysterious or mystical about it.\u00a0 <\/span>This\r\nword comes from the Hebrew, qadash<\/span><\/i>, <\/span><\/b>which means to be clean, to be consecrated,\r\nto wholly separate yourself to the Lord and the things of God.\u00a0 <\/span>Anyone who knew my father would quickly tell\r\nyou that this word defined him, his character, and his complete commitment to\r\nthe Lord.\u00a0 <\/span>If the Lord said something to\r\nhim and instructed him to go some place or do something, you could take it to\r\nthe bank!\u00a0 <\/span>Neither hell nor high water\r\nwere going to dissuade him.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

It\r\nwas in the spring of 1944 that Dad went to the Northwest District Council of\r\nthe Assemblies of God to say to them, \u201cBrethren, you know that God has called\r\nme to Alaska.\u00a0 <\/span>The time has come for me\r\nto do that.\u00a0 <\/span>Will you help us?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Their\r\nimmediate response was, \u201cBrother Capener, Alaska is just too expensive.\u00a0 <\/span>We can send you to China or Africa for a\r\nfraction of the cost.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

He\r\nreturned, \u201cBrethren, God didn\u2019t call me to China or Africa.\u00a0 <\/span>He called me to Alaska.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Once\r\nagain, they responded, \u201cWe cannot send you to Alaska.\u00a0 <\/span>We refuse to allow you to go there.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

And\r\nDad\u2019s final answer to them was, \u201cGod called me!\u00a0\r\n<\/span>You didn\u2019t, and I\u2019m going!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u201cThen\r\nyou\u2019ll go without us, and without our backing.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>We cannot be a part of such a venture.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

And\r\nso the great adventure began.\u00a0 <\/span>Dad went\r\nhome and told Mom where things stood.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Because he had grown up in North Dakota and Minnesota helping his father\r\non the family farms, farming was all he really knew anything about.\u00a0 <\/span>We were as a family, living in Ilwaco,\r\nWashington where Dad had built and pioneered a church.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Ilwaco,\r\nfor those unfamiliar with the place, is on the mouth of the Columbia River,\r\nacross the river from Astoria, Oregon.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Ilwaco was, and still is, a fishing community.\u00a0 <\/span>Dad knew nothing about commercial fishing,\r\nbut determined to try his hand at it.\u00a0 <\/span>He\r\nsaid to Mom, \u201cI\u2019m going to do whatever I have in front of me and believe God to\r\nproduce the needed results.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

THAT,\r\nfamily, is what you do when nothing but the voice of God makes the\r\ndifference!\u00a0 <\/span>That is what happens when,\r\nas Abraham said to me on my first visit to Heaven, \u201cOnce you have heard the\r\nvoice of God, there is no other voice!\u201d\u00a0\r\n<\/span>That\u2019s such a true statement that I cannot over emphasize it!\u00a0 <\/span>What goes along with that statement is the\r\nfact that the more often you hear and become familiar with it, the more you\r\nlive by it!\u00a0 <\/span>There is no authority higher\r\nthan His voice speaking to you.\u00a0 <\/span>His\r\npresence accompanies it.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Thus,\r\nwhen you hear the voice of the Lord speaking to you, giving you directions to\r\ndo, or say, or go somewhere, you obey that without compromise and without\r\nquestion.\u00a0 <\/span>It matters not now logical or\r\nillogical those instructions might be when it comes to human reasoning, that\u2019s\r\nwhat you do!\u00a0 <\/span>The concrete results follow\r\nto back it up.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Thus,\r\nfor Dad to launch out into commercial fishing into some of the roughest ocean\r\nconditions imaginable in spite of the fact that he\u2019d only been a farmer in the\r\npast and knew nothing whatever about the ways of the sea was a challenge of the\r\nhighest order!<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

He\r\nhad a friend who owned a cannery in Raymond, Washington who he went to see\r\nabout loaning him a boat that he could use for the seven-week fishing\r\nseason.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cReverend, I do have one, but\r\nit really isn\u2019t much of a boat.\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s 28\r\nfeet long, but doesn\u2019t have a cabin and no communication gear.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Dad\u2019s\r\nresponse was, \u201cI\u2019ll take it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\nfishing season opened and Dad set out to sea.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>The commercial fishermen laughed at him \u2014 especially those with the\r\n80-foot boats and the finest of gear.\u00a0 <\/span>He\r\nignored the taunts and asked the Lord where to go to get the most fish.\u00a0 <\/span>The newspapers followed his adventure, really\r\nout of curiosity.\u00a0 <\/span>You can imagine their\r\nshock when he came in with the largest catch of fish to open the season, and\r\nthey paraded his story up and down the west coast.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\nowner of the cannery said, \u201cCapener, if you\u2019re going to fish like that, we\u2019ve\r\ngot to do better by you for a boat!\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>He\r\ntraded boat number 1 for a 50-footer with a cabin and some electronic gear,\r\nalthough no two-way radio communications.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Dad\r\nhad a covenant with the Lord that he would only fish six days a week and be\r\nback in his pulpit on Sundays.\u00a0 <\/span>That\r\nbaffled the fishermen in port.\u00a0 <\/span>You\u2019re\r\ngoing to lose seven days out of the fishing season so you can preach on\r\nSundays?<\/i><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Week\r\ntwo began and he set out as usual, following the quickening of Holy Spirit as\r\nto where to fish.\u00a0 <\/span>When he came back into\r\nport on Saturday he still had more fish than any of the professional\r\nfishermen.\u00a0 <\/span>To say the least, that\r\nfrustrated them.\u00a0 <\/span>They decided to pay him\r\na visit.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u201cCapener,\r\nwhere are you going?\u00a0 <\/span>What are you doing\r\nthat\u2019s so different?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Those\r\nwere loaded questions.\u00a0 <\/span>The fishermen\r\nguarded their fishing grounds like a national secret!\u00a0 <\/span>Dad, on the other hand, really didn\u2019t\r\ncare.\u00a0 <\/span>He went where Holy Spirit\r\ndirected, and if the other fishermen wanted to wait until Monday to follow him\r\nout, fine!\u00a0 <\/span>They all agreed to meet back\r\nin port on Saturday to compare their respective catches.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Again,\r\nthings were no different.\u00a0 <\/span>The Lord had\r\ngiven him a larger catch of fish than those professionals with their 80-foot\r\nboats and the finest of fishing gear.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>They all shook their heads in wonderment.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Let\u2019s\r\nskip over the weeks to Week #7.\u00a0 <\/span>Everyone\r\nheaded out to sea as usual.\u00a0 <\/span>A breeze\r\ncame up that began blowing Dad\u2019s boat farther out to sea.\u00a0 <\/span>At one point, he calculated that he was more\r\nthan 200 miles away from port.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

A\r\nstorm was brewing.\u00a0 <\/span>Dad, being unfamiliar\r\nwith the signs in the skies, stayed with his tasks.\u00a0 <\/span>The seasoned fishermen knew what was coming\r\nand began working their way back to port.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>With no radio communication, he had no way of being warned by the others\r\nwho frantically tried to reach him.\u00a0 <\/span>The\r\nstorm hit and he found himself in the midst of waves that threatened to destroy\r\nhis boat.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\nwaves increased in size so that he couldn\u2019t avoid being inundated by them.\u00a0 <\/span>They would crash over the boat, submerging it\r\nmomentarily before bobbing back to the surface.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>It didn\u2019t take a whole lot of this for Dad to realize that his boat was\r\ncracking under the continuous assault.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>He only had one course of action.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Waiting\r\nfor one of the waves to pass, he dashed out onto the deck of the boat,\r\nstretched his hand out over the water and did what he knew Jesus did, \u201cPeace,\r\nbe still<\/b>!\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>Then he ran back into the\r\ncabin, shut the door and waited.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Within\r\n20 minutes, the storm had quieted down, and there was scarcely a ripple on the\r\nface of the water.\u00a0 <\/span>A gentle breeze came\r\nup to blow him back into port.\u00a0 <\/span>He didn\u2019t\r\nbegin to have enough fuel to make it back otherwise.\u00a0 <\/span>And the fish began to bite!<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

(Now\r\nyou see where the confidence came for Dad to speak that one simple command when\r\nhe walked into the situation with Simeon threatening to kill Susan with the\r\naxe!)<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

I\r\nneed to explain something here.\u00a0 <\/span>Dad\r\ndidn\u2019t have any of the professional fishing gear that the professionals\r\nhad.\u00a0 <\/span>He simply strung lines out over the\r\nedge of the boat with some bait on them.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Every fish he caught, he caught by hand!<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\nweek was passing and no one had seen any sign of Alvin Capener.\u00a0 <\/span>Some of the fishermen came over to console Mom.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cMrs. Capener, we\u2019re really sorry about the\r\nloss of your husband at sea.\u00a0 <\/span>If you\r\nlike, we\u2019d be glad to begin funeral preparations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Mom\r\nlooked at them and said, \u201cThank you, but no thank you.\u00a0 <\/span>God hasn\u2019t led us this far to let Alvin drown\r\nat sea.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>They all shook their heads,\r\nturned around and walked away.\u00a0 <\/span>This\r\nlady is living in fantasy land.\u00a0 <\/span>No one\r\ncould have survived that storm \u2014 much less a landlubber from Minnesota!<\/i><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0 <\/span>Saturday came, and still no sign of Dad.\u00a0 <\/span>The fishermen paid their respects again.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cMrs. Capener, really!\u00a0 <\/span>You need to face the reality that your\r\nhusband isn\u2019t coming home!\u00a0 <\/span>Let us begin\r\nmaking funeral preparations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Mom\r\nshook her head again and said, \u201cNo, we\u2019re going to wait.\u00a0 <\/span>You\u2019ll see!<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Around\r\n5:00 in the afternoon, someone spotted a dot on the horizon.\u00a0 <\/span>The community gathered on the docks waiting\r\nto see what this was.\u00a0 <\/span>Sure enough, it\r\nwas Dad.\u00a0 <\/span>What they saw, they couldn\u2019t\r\nbelieve.\u00a0 <\/span>Had their been any kind of\r\nwave, he would have capsized.\u00a0 <\/span>The decks\r\nwere full of fish.\u00a0 <\/span>The cabin was full of\r\nfish.\u00a0 <\/span>There were fish over, above and\r\naround his bunk.\u00a0 <\/span>He was standing almost\r\nknee-deep in fish.\u00a0 <\/span>You can imagine the\r\nastonishment on everyone\u2019s faces!<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

On\r\nMonday, he went to meet with the owner of the cannery who had been keeping\r\nscore on the number of fish being brought in.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>The owner of the cannery (whose name I have forgotten) said, \u201cRev.\r\nCapener, you have brought in a total of 39,000 pounds of Albacore Tuna.\u00a0 <\/span>That is worth to you, $6,300.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\nnewspapers went wild.\u00a0 <\/span>One of the\r\nnewspaper headlines read, Landlubber, Fisherman, Preacher sets all-time\r\nrecord catch of fish.<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

It\r\nwas, too!\u00a0 <\/span>For the size of boat and the\r\nlength of time, Dad set an all-time record for the amount of fish he caught\r\nduring those seven weeks.\u00a0 <\/span>It is a record\r\nthat stands unbeaten today, more than 78 years later.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

But\r\nthere\u2019s another record here that we haven\u2019t talked about yet.\u00a0 <\/span>When Dad started this adventure, his hope was\r\nthat if he had a really good season, he might bring in roughly a thousand\r\ndollars.\u00a0 <\/span>Before his first day of\r\nfishing, he had said to Mom, \u201cLorraine, we are going to need $5,000 for\r\nbuilding supplies to build a church in Nome, and $1,000 to pay off the debt on\r\nthe church here in Ilwaco.\u00a0 <\/span>How that\r\nget\u2019s accomplished, I do not know, but I\u2019ll do my part and the Lord will make\r\nup the difference.\u00a0 <\/span>What Dad didn\u2019t know\r\nwas that Mom had put in a request for $300 additionally to purchase some\r\nfurniture.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

And\r\nthere it was!\u00a0 <\/span>$5,000 for building\r\nsupplies, $1,000 to pay off the debt on the church in Ilwaco, and Mom\u2019s request\r\nfor $300 for furniture. No one could have possibly foreseen that the Lord was\r\ngoing to take the simple obedience and act of faith in going commercial fishing\r\nin order to do his part.\u00a0 <\/span>Commercial\r\nfishing just wasn\u2019t a part of Dad\u2019s experience, or understanding or previous\r\nplanning.\u00a0 <\/span>Funny thing!\u00a0 <\/span>God doesn\u2019t call those who are equipped and\r\ntrained; He calls those who are totally obedient in the face of the unknown,\r\nand He equips them.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

That\r\nhas been the lifelong example that was set in front of me, and why I have been\r\nso ready to do whatever the Lord said to do, no matter how logical or\r\nreasonable it was.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\nresume that God has given me is living proof.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>The things I\u2019ve done in life had no training or background preparation,\r\nand yet I went to work for NASA at age 19 and spent 3 1\/2 years doing research\r\nand development.\u00a0 <\/span>I have 50 years in\r\nradio and television working both sides of the camera or microphone, doing\r\nbroadcast engineering for which I had no prior training, and having to depend\r\non the Lord for supernatural revelation in numerous circumstances.\u00a0 <\/span>On and on it goes.\u00a0 <\/span>It is both the preparation and blessing of\r\nthe Lord, and in each case, it has taken complete obedience to the prompting of\r\nthe Lord and the quickening of Holy Spirit.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>It\u2019s nothing to brag about!\u00a0 <\/span>None\r\nof this would have happened if the Lord hadn\u2019t empowered me.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

But,\r\nyou see, I had a pattern set before me with my father.\u00a0 <\/span>During the course of 44 years, he buildt\r\nseven churches in the arctic and on Saint Paul Island (I got to help on a number\r\nof these projects) and his simple preaching and ministry wound up leading\r\nthousands of thousands of Eskimo, Indian and Aleut people to the Lord, all the\r\nway from Saint Paul Island in the Pribilofs across northern Canada to\r\nGreenland.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Dad\r\nwas a pioneer whose pioneering was nothing more than simple obedience to the\r\nword of the Lord, and refusing to be deterred by opposition and obstacles.\u00a0 <\/span>His life and example defined Holiness for me\r\nand our family.\u00a0 <\/span>He defined trotal\r\ncommitment to the Word of the Lord, no matter what the cost and even when it\r\nwent against the religious and denominational leaders whose argument was that\r\nit couldn\u2019t be done, or that it just cost too much.\u00a0 <\/span>Dad\u2019s return to their arguments was, \u201cWhat\r\nGod orders, He pays for!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Della\r\nand I have learned that lesson again and again and again!\u00a0 <\/span>Our existence in Temple, Texas is all the\r\nproof we need!<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\ncall to \u201cCome Up Higher\u201d is a command to live in the presence of the Lord.\u00a0 <\/span>It is a command to live a life of\r\nHoliness.\u00a0 <\/span>It is a command to be ready\r\nfor adventures in a dimension that we\u2019ve never known in the past, but it is a\r\ncommand to walk with the Lord in absolute confidence, knowing that He doesn\u2019t\r\ncall us to come to a place He hasn\u2019t prepared in advance for us.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\nadventures that Della and I have walked and lived are very different from those\r\nthat Dad and Mom lived and walked, and yet the principle remains the same.\u00a0 <\/span>Had my parents not walked and lived the Word\r\nof the Lord, I would never have had the pattern set before me that has\r\ncharacterized my life.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

When\r\nDad was on his deathbed in Providence Hospital in Anchorage, he said to me,\r\n\u201cSon, I\u2019m so sorry that I don\u2019t have a real inheritance to pass on to you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

My\r\nresponse was, \u201cDad, what are you talking about?\u00a0\r\n<\/span>The spiritual heritage you have left for me and in me is worth more than\r\nany possible financial gains or inheritance.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>You have left me an inheritance in God for which there is no price!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Each\r\nof us has that call to \u201cCome Up Higher.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n
