The early 1980\u2019s were\r\na launch pad for us into the presence of the Lord.\u00a0 <\/span>Sometimes our worship sessions lasted for\r\nwell over an hour, and the more we gave time to it as a fellowship, the greater\r\nwas the degree of His intimate presence.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>There were a few times when the presence of the Lord filled our midst to\r\nsuch a degree that no one moved, no one made a sound, we just bathed in His\r\nHoliness.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

That\r\nwas an introductory time for all of us.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>The House of Praise was an adjunct to CBN-Alaska, Inc., and our\r\naffiliation with Pat Robertson and the 700 Club.\u00a0 <\/span>CBN went through some major changes in 1983\r\nand decided to discontinue all of its satellite operations.\u00a0 <\/span>That meant that we no longer had\r\nauthorization to operate under CBN\u2019s administration, and it also meant that we\r\nlost much of our funding.\u00a0 <\/span>Closing the\r\ndoors of that ministry was a shock to all of us, and with a number of other\r\nchanges in the works, we closed up our Fairbanks operations and moved to\r\nAnchorage.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

It\r\nwas not until 1989 or 1990 when Earle and Marcia Treend moved to\r\nAnchorage.\u00a0 <\/span>I had been counseling the\r\npastor of the Anchorage Foursquare Church, and on this particular Sunday, Della\r\nand I were there.\u00a0 <\/span>I was involved in\r\nleading the worship, and Della sat down in a pew just behind Earle.\u00a0 <\/span>Della signaled me that the gentleman in front\r\nof her was a worshiper.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>We caught up\r\nwith him after the morning service, and went to lunch with him and his wife.\u00a0 <\/span>If was the beginning of our sharing the\r\nconcept of a modern Tabernacle of David.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

We\r\nbegan to get together for times of worship in our home, and things began to\r\nmultiply.\u00a0 <\/span>We decided that we were going\r\nto get together every day for a time of worship, even if that time had to be\r\nabbreviated.\u00a0 <\/span>Della was managing Alaska\u2019s\r\nlargest Zales Jewelry store, I was Chief Engineer for Fox Television in Alaska,\r\nEarle was the president of a consulting firm, and Marcia worked for an\r\nairline.\u00a0 <\/span>We picked lunchtime as our time\r\nto get together.\u00a0 <\/span>That turned out to be\r\nhilarious!\u00a0 <\/span>We managed to arrive all\r\nabout the same time, shed our coats on the floor, joined hands and began to\r\nsing in the Spirit.\u00a0 <\/span>That lasted\r\ngenerally around 10\u201415 minutes.\u00a0 <\/span>We\r\npicked up our coats and rushed out the door to get back to our respective jobs.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\nfaithfulness of our gathering like that began to produce results.\u00a0 <\/span>The Lord began to multiply our time so that\r\nwe were able to begin gathering in the evenings.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>We began having real experiences of being\r\nthrust into the presence of the Lord, so much so, that there were times when we\r\ncould only sit still and not sing, not pray, not do anything but bask in God\u2019s\r\npresence with Him beginning to funfold new dimensions to us.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

In\r\nthe midst of all that was unfolding, Della and both were prompted at the same\r\ntime to resign our positions and prepare for change.\u00a0 <\/span>At different times, but in sequential order,\r\nwe began to get these messages from the Lord:\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Simplify, Consolidate, Be ready to become mobile. So we did \u2014 at least\r\naccording to our interpretation of what the Lord was saying.\u00a0 <\/span>It was almost funny.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>We had lived in a fairly large six-bedroom\r\nhome.\u00a0 <\/span>With a couple of exceptions, most\r\nof our children were grown and gone.\u00a0 <\/span>We\r\ndidn't need six bedrooms, so we figured \u201cConsolidate\u201d meant to find a smaller\r\nhome.\u00a0 <\/span>We fixed our sight on a three-bedroom\r\ncabin about 50 miles out of Anchorage.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>We began to pack with the plan to move to this home.\u00a0 <\/span>A few days into this preparation, we were in\r\na head-on collision with our brand new Chevrolet Lumina van.\u00a0 <\/span>The car was totaled, we all walked away from\r\nit without a scratch\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>What also went\r\nwith it was our car payment and our insurance payment.\u00a0 <\/span>Our insurance had expired a few days before\r\nthe accident and the insurance that came with our purchase paid off the loan.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Consolidation\r\nwas beginning to take on a totally different dimension.\u00a0 <\/span>Earle and Marcia owned a 160-acre ranch just\r\noutside of Post Falls, Idaho.\u00a0 <\/span>The lady\r\nwho was their caretaker was leaving and Earle suggested we move to the ranch\r\nand become the caretakers.\u00a0 <\/span>It didn\u2019t\r\ntake any guesswork to figure out that God was moving us in a very different\r\ndirection, and we very quickly made the transition.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Once\r\nfriends began to find out about our being there with a focus for worship, we\r\nstarted having frequent spontaneous worship gatherings.\u00a0 <\/span>They weren\u2019t always every day of the week,\r\nbut several days a week. We made periodic trips into Alberta to spend time with\r\nfriends who wanted us to gather in their homes.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>First it was Red Deer, then Cochrane, then Lethbridge.\u00a0 <\/span>Eventually the folks whom we visited and shared\r\nspontaneous worship with began to travel to the ranch in Post falls to gather\r\nwith us there.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Periodically,\r\nwe had three-and-four day gatherings at the ranch.\u00a0 <\/span>One of those gatherings turned out to be\r\npivotal for everyone.\u00a0 <\/span>44 people\r\nassembled at this 950 square-foot ranch house for our first three-day\r\nspontaneous worship gathering.\u00a0 <\/span>People\r\nslept in sleeping bags, even under the dining room table.\u00a0 <\/span>Some came in their camper trailers or motor\r\nhomes.\u00a0 <\/span>The point of it all was that no\r\none came for any other purpose than to minister to the Lord.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

And\r\nthe results were breathtaking!\u00a0 <\/span>We ate\r\nbreakfast together, then worshiped all morning.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>We took a short lunch break, then worshiped all afternoon.\u00a0 <\/span>We broke for supper, then continued on\r\nworshiping until anywhere from midnight to 2:00 AM.\u00a0 <\/span>That kind of persistent focus on ministering\r\nto the Lord produced visitations from the Lord, hearing the audible voice of\r\nGod in our midst and being lifted corporately into the heavenlies.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\npresence of the Lord was almost liquid, if I can describe it that way.\u00a0 <\/span>The revelations that flowed in our midst were\r\nnothing short of incredible.\u00a0 <\/span>What the\r\nLord unveiled to us were dimensions of Him that we\u2019d never had.\u00a0 <\/span>Without that term being applied to what was\r\nhappening, we were \u201cComing Up Higher\u201d for all practical purposes.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

One\r\nafternoon, as we were worshiping, we suddenly found ourselves corporately in\r\nthe heavenlies and in the visible presence of the Lord.\u00a0 <\/span>It stopped us in our tracks.\u00a0 <\/span>We just didn\u2019t have anything to say.\u00a0 <\/span>The Lord noted His approval of our worship,\r\nand just as quickly as we had been thrust into the heavenlies, we were back in\r\nthe living room.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

There\r\nwas another occasion as we were worshiping (and I will describe this worship\r\nmomentarily) when the Captain of the Hosts of Heaven suddenly appeared and\r\nknelt down on one knee in front of Della with his spear upright in his right\r\nhand.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\r\n\u00a0 <\/span>He spoke two words that caught\r\nDella off-guard, \u201cCommand me!\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>To say\r\nthat she had a puzzled look on her face would be an understatement. \u00a0<\/span>She looked at me, then at the people gathered\r\nin the room.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cWhat do I say?\u201d she\r\nasked.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cWhat do I command?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Then,\r\nall of a sudden, it dawned on her that every family gathered had children that\r\nhad gone astray.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cGo and retrieve the\r\nchildren,\u201d she said. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\nCaptain stood quickly to his feet and motioned with a sweep of his hand to the\r\njust visible hosts in the background with a one word command, \u201cGo!\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>Just like that the Captain and the Hosts were\r\ngone.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Have\r\nto break this narrative here to share a funny.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>It wasn\u2019t long after this event that our daughter, Rebekah, who was in\r\nher teen-age rebellious years, decided she\u2019d had enough of our worship.\u00a0 <\/span>During one evening when we were all enveloped\r\nin the presence of the Lord, Rebekah stuck some clothes in a cloth bag and\r\nsneaked out the back door and headed down our driveway.\u00a0 <\/span>The driveway was about a quarter-mile\r\nlong.\u00a0 <\/span>When she got to Stateline Road,\r\nthere were three very large angels waiting for her.\u00a0 <\/span>It scared the daylights out of her and she\r\nturned around and began walking quickly back up the driveway.\u00a0 <\/span>The angels formed one on each side of her and\r\none behind her.\u00a0 <\/span>She noticed that they\r\nwere just gliding and that their feet were not touching the ground.\u00a0 <\/span>The angels stayed with her all the way back\r\nto the house.\u00a0 <\/span>When she got there, she\r\nrealized that the house was ringed with angels, all dressed in glowing\r\nwhite.\u00a0 <\/span>They were joining with us in the\r\nworship.\u00a0 <\/span>She ran back in the house, up\r\nthe stairs to her bedroom and slammed the door.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>She didn\u2019t come out until the following morning when she shared what had\r\nhappened.\u00a0 <\/span>It was an experience she\u2019s\r\nnever forgotten.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

One\r\nafternoon, we were engaged in warfare in our worship.\u00a0 <\/span>Suddenly the house began to shake like we\r\nwere in the middle of an earthquake.\u00a0 <\/span>We\r\nstopped and ran outside.\u00a0 <\/span>What we heard\r\nwas the sound of hundreds, if not thousands, of horses galloping in\r\nunison.\u00a0 <\/span>We could not see them, but it\r\nwas obvious to us that these were the Hosts of Heaven going forth to\r\nbattle.\u00a0 <\/span>We went back in the house and\r\nresumed our warfare worship.\u00a0 <\/span>For those\r\nof you who may have heard the music, it is recorded on a series of CD\u2019s as The\r\nCall to Battle.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

I\r\nneed to break from this narrative for a minute to describe the nature of this\r\nworship.\u00a0 <\/span>There were generally not less\r\nthan a dozen musicians and occasionally a number of singers or vocalizers who\r\nused their voices as instruments.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Everything was spontaneous.\u00a0 <\/span>We\r\nhad no music in front of us.\u00a0 <\/span>The music\r\nwe play or sang was music we\u2019d never heard before and certainly never played\r\nbefore.\u00a0 <\/span>Yet it all came forth as though\r\nit was being directed and orchestrated by Holy Spirit \u2014 and it clearly\r\nwas.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\r\n\u00a0 <\/span>There was much new music, Scripture\r\nsongs, spontaneous Spirit-worship songs that came forth during those\r\ngatherings.\u00a0 <\/span>I hav estimated that we captured\r\na good 400 hours of that worship on digital tape, and we have produced some 25\r\nCD\u2019s so far.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Unless\r\nHoly Spirit was giving us a new song tht we were singing in English, we sang as\r\na group corporately in the Spirit.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

You\u2019ll\r\nrecall what John said as he opens up the Revelation.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Revelation\r\n1:10-11a<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>I was in the Spirit on the Lord\u2019s day, and heard behind me a\r\ngreat voice, as of a trumpet, Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What\r\nthou seest, write in a book, and send it<\/i> unto the seven churches\u2026... <\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

That\r\ncomes very close to an experience we had in 1976 when we were in another\r\nwarfare experience.\u00a0 <\/span>We all corporately\r\nheard the audible voice of the Lord.\u00a0 <\/span>It\r\nsounded like it was coming from Earle\u2019s trombone.\u00a0 <\/span>In any case it was the sound of His\r\nvoice\u00a0 <\/span>projecting like it was a\r\nhorn.\u00a0 <\/span>His message was, \u201cI AM that I\r\nAM!\u00a0 <\/span>I AM that I AM, and there is no\r\nother!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Talk\r\nabout stopping us in our tracks!\u00a0 <\/span>We\r\nrealized later that there were a couple of people who had joined in with us who\r\nwere skeptical about all that was taking place.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Brother!\u00a0 <\/span>Did the Lord ever speak\r\nto that!<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Earlier,\r\nI said that we had recorded not less than 400 hours of this worship on digital\r\ntape.\u00a0 <\/span>You realize, of course, that this\r\nrepresents a portion of the time we spent in the presence of the Lord.\u00a0 <\/span>It is why I have come to the solid position\r\nthat \u201cThere is no substitute for the Presence of the Lord.\u201d<\/b><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Let\u2019s\r\nwrap up today\u2019s discussion with a quote from the apostle Paul.\u00a0 <\/span>This is one of those Scriptures we have turned\r\ninto music.\u00a0 <\/span>We sing this periodically.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Galatians\r\n5:22-25<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering,\r\ngentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no\r\nlaw. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

And they that are Christ\u2019s have crucified the flesh with the\r\naffections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the\r\nSpirit.<\/u><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

THERE IS THE KEY!<\/span><\/u>\u00a0 <\/span>If we live in\r\nthe Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit!<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

It\r\nis impossible to over-accentuate the necessity of being in the living,\r\nbreathing presence of the Lord, walking with Him in this place, being so\r\nenvelopedin the two-way love and devotion we have with the Lord Jesus Christ.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

One\r\nof the things missing in much of the body of Christ is the sense of His\r\nholiness.\u00a0 <\/span>It has almost become something\r\nmystical, something unattainable.\u00a0 <\/span>We all\r\nknow that Jesus was holy, that holiness was apart of His character, His life,\r\nHis very essence.\u00a0 <\/span>Yet, the idea that we\r\ncan attain that same essence in our lives as a reflection of Him is missing and\r\nan impossibility.\u00a0 <\/span>There is an awe and a\r\nreverence that accompanies that holiness.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Nevertheless,\r\nthis is something we can walk in as we become wrapped up in His presence.\u00a0 <\/span>This is not a theory.\u00a0 <\/span>This is not a hope-so, think-so.\u00a0 <\/span>It can, and should, be visible in us and our\r\nlives.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

My\r\nfather, Alvin Capener, was a living example of a man who exhibited the Holiness\r\nof the Lord.\u00a0 <\/span>I have to share with you an\r\nexample of just how that played out in his life.\u00a0 <\/span>He was a man who exhibited the presence of\r\nthe Lord to the degree that no matter where he went, many people almost came to\r\nthe place where they bowed wherever he was.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

When\r\nwe lived in Barrow, Alaska, I helped my father build a two-story church\r\nbuilding.\u00a0 <\/span>Our living quarters took up a\r\nportion of the top floor, and the entrance to the stairway faced our neighbors,\r\nSimeon and Susan.\u00a0 <\/span>Susan\u2019s first husband\r\nhad died with some unknown disease, and she took up living with Simeon.\u00a0 <\/span>Simeon, at the time, was part of a whaling\r\ncrew and he was a died-in-the-wool alcoholic.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>It was rare to see him completely sober.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Susan had two daughters, Mary and Margaret.\u00a0 <\/span>At the time of this incident, Mary was about\r\n13 years old.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

One\r\nmorning, we heard the door to our apartment being pounded on with the voice of\r\na girl screaming.\u00a0 <\/span>Dad raced down the stairs.\u00a0 <\/span>I was close behind.\u00a0 <\/span>When he opened the door, Mary was standing\r\nthere shouting, \u201cSimeon is trying to kill my mother with an axe.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Dad\r\nwasted no time walking across the alley to their front door.\u00a0 <\/span>When he stepped in, Simeon was raging\r\ndrunk.\u00a0 <\/span>He had an axe in his hand\r\npreparing to bring it down on Susan\u2019s head.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Dad looked him in the face, raised his right hand and simply uttered one\r\nword, \u201cPeace.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>The authority of the Lord\r\nwas in that utterance and Dad well knew what the voicing of that word would bring.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

(I\u2019ll\r\nshare the history of that momentarily.)<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Simeon\r\ndropped the axe, dropped to his knees and began bawling like a baby.\u00a0 <\/span>In that moment, Dad shared a few words that\r\ncaused Simeon to repent and accept Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior.\u00a0 <\/span>Obviously, he sobered up instantly and\r\ntotally!\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\r\n\u00a0<\/span>The change in his countenance\r\nwas so great that Susan also immediately accepted Jesus as her Savior.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Simeon\u2019s\r\nconversion brought the triggering of a snowball effect in the community, not to\r\nmention the salvation of his brother, Peter, who was the postmaster in the\r\nvillage of Wainwright, some 90+ miles down the coast from Barrow.\u00a0 <\/span>One of the oddball (my description) side\r\neffects was that Mary came to live with us.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>She lived in our home for a number of years, traveled with my parents\r\nand essentially became my Eskimo sister.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Simeon\r\nultimately became a good friend, a banjo picker who joined our praise and\r\nworship (and, brother, was he good!)\u00a0 <\/span>His\r\ntransformation resulted in another major benefit to the family (he and Susan\r\ndid get married) and the community: he became the leading captain of a whaling\r\ncrew bringing in many whales to feed the community and the villages down the\r\ncoast.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

We\r\nstill have a ways to go.\u00a0 <\/span>See you next\r\nweek.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The early 1980\u2019s were a launch pad for us into the presence of the Lord. Sometimes our worship sessions lasted for well over an hour, and the more we gave time to it as a fellowship, the greater was the degree of His intimate presence. There were a few times when the presence of the Lord filled our midst to such a degree that no one moved, no one made a sound, we just bathed in His Holiness.<\/p>\n

That was an introductory time for all of us. The House of Praise was an adjunct to CBN-Alaska, Inc., and our affiliation with Pat Robertson and the 700 Club. CBN went through some major changes in 1983 and decided to discontinue all of its satellite operations. That meant that we no longer had authorization to operate under CBN\u2019s administration, and it also meant that we lost much of our funding.
