\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n

You\u2019ll excuse me for\r\nthe following.\u00a0 <\/span>I know it is basic, and\r\nwe have covered this before, but this is foundational to our response to \u201cCome\r\nUp Higher!\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

One cannot live in the\r\nSpirit, and one cannot walk in the Spirit until such time as they surrender to\r\nHoly Spirit completely and unreservedly.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>That surrender is generally marked by a release of Holy Spirit using their\r\ntongue.\u00a0 <\/span>They yield total control of their\r\ntongue to Holy Spirit and He speaks through them in some language (or\r\nlanguages) they\u2019ve never learned \u2014 and in most cases have never heard.\u00a0 <\/span>Why this becomes a proof of one\u2019s immersion\r\nin the Spirit is evidenced in something that James writes to the body of\r\nChrist.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

James\r\n3:3-8<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span><\/b>Behold,\r\nwe put bits in the horses\u2019 mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about\r\ntheir whole body. Behold also the ships, which though they be<\/i> so great,\r\nand are<\/i> driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small\r\nhelm, whithersoever the governor listeth. Even so the tongue is a little\r\nmember, and boasteth great things.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! And the\r\ntongue is<\/i> a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our\r\nmembers, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of\r\nnature; and it is set on fire of hell. For every kind of beasts, and of birds,\r\nand of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of\r\nmankind: But the tongue can no man tame; it is<\/i> an unruly evil, full of\r\ndeadly poison.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Thus,\r\nthe need for us to yield control of our tongues to Holy Spirit so that He does\r\nthe \u201csteering\u201d in our lives.\u00a0 <\/span>I know that\r\nthere are numerous religious arguments from folks who believe that they\u2019ve been\r\neither \u201cbaptized in the Holy Spirit\u201d or \u201cfilled with the Spirit\u201d and yet do not\r\nspeak in tongues.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

That\r\nargument simply doesn\u2019t work.\u00a0 <\/span>One does\r\nnot need to continuously speak in tongues \u2014 although I believe it is one of the\r\nmost beneficial and spiritually building modes that we have available to us \u2014\r\nin order to walk in the Spirit, but if they refuse to yield their tongues to\r\nHoly Spirit, they have also refused to yield themselves totally to Holy Spirit.\u00a0 <\/span>If you believe what Paul wrote to the\r\nEphesians, you then believe and know that you cannot be filled with the Spirit.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Consider\r\nhis statement to the Ekklesia in Ephesus.\u00a0\r\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Ephesians\r\n5:17-21<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>Wherefore\r\nbe ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is<\/i>. And be\r\nnot drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;<\/span>\r\nSpeaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,\r\nsinging and making melody in your heart to the Lord; Giving thanks always for\r\nall things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

In\r\ncase it isn\u2019t clear to you from the phraseology used in the KJV, the term\r\n\u201cspiritual songs\u201d refers to singing in tongues.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Back in the 1970\u2019s during the Charismatic Renewal, Bob Mumford did a\r\nhumorous but very explicit description of verse 18.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

\r\nThe way he phrased it came out loosely like\r\nthis:\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\u201cDon\u2019t\r\ndrink wine to the point of intoxication \u2014 don\u2019t get your inspiration from\r\nwine,\u00a0 <\/span>but rather become intoxicated and saturated\r\nwith the Spirit (to the point where you are drunk in the Spirit).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

That\r\nsaid, let me give you my amplified translation of verse 19.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Speaking articulately to and within yourself, and <\/i><\/b>among\r\nyourselves as a group, singing psalms and hymns (poetic Scriptural songs), and\r\nin spiritual languages and tongues, singing and playing on stringed instruments\r\nin and out of your innermost being to the Lord [worshiping in truth].<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\u00a0<\/span>(Ephesians 5:19, RAC\r\ntranslation & amplification)<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\nGreek phraseology here makes it clear that this is something that is\r\nSpirit-directed, flowing out of hearts of love toward the Lord.\u00a0 <\/span>In other words, we are not just singing songs\r\nto sing songs.\u00a0 <\/span>This is not a\r\nroutine.\u00a0 <\/span>This is ministry to the\r\nLord.\u00a0 <\/span>Understand?<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

We\r\ncannot retain control of our tongues as we see fit<\/i><\/b> and still fall\r\ninto the error of thinking or believing that we can live and walk in the\r\nSpirit.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Let\u2019s\r\nnot forget that this is a realm \u2014 a supernatural dimension in God \u2014 that we\r\ndon\u2019t get to make decisions in and about just because we choose to.\u00a0 <\/span>We respond to His call to come up higher<\/u>.\u00a0 <\/span>Here\u2019s what John had to say:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

John\r\n1:12-13<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>But\r\nas many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even<\/i>\r\nto them that believe on His name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the\r\nwill of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

And\r\nhere is how it amplifies out of the Greek text.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

But as many as believed in and responded to Him, to them He gave\r\nthe authority and ability to become \u2013 and be transformed into \u2013 begotten\r\nchildren of God, specifically to those who entrust their future existence and\r\nwell-being by faith in His name, rank, position, character, personality and\r\nbeing; who were begotten, not of flesh and blood, nor because human flesh\r\ndetermined it by its own decision, nor because the mind and intellect of man\r\nseized upon it and willed it into existence, but by God as a sovereign act of\r\nHis Will and determination.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

(John\r\n1:12-13, RAC Translation & Amplification)<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Once\r\nagain, Understand?\u00a0 <\/span>This is a realm where\r\nGod gets to do the choosing \u2014 NOT US!\u00a0\r\n<\/span>The transformation that takes us from walking after the flesh \u2014 making\r\nchoices and decisions predicated on our human understanding \u2014 to walking and\r\nliving in the realm of the Spirit is based on our ability to yield and to\r\nrespond to what Holy Spirit says and does.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

That\u2019s\r\na learning process, folks!\u00a0 <\/span>And we don\u2019t\r\nget there automatically.\u00a0 <\/span>Once we have\r\nbeen baptized in the Spirit, we\u2019ve only just begun.\u00a0 <\/span>We\u2019ve simply walked through a portal into a\r\nnew universe.\u00a0 <\/span>We are going to make\r\nmistakes.\u00a0 <\/span>We are going to yield to our\r\nflesh when we ought not to.\u00a0 <\/span>We are going\r\nto hear the voice of Holy Spirit speaking through others to us and respond\r\nwrongly.\u00a0 <\/span>And you know what?\u00a0 <\/span>The mercy and grace of the Lord are there to\r\ncorrect us, to pick us up when we find that we have really screwed up and to\r\ngive us another learning opportunity in the midst of the same kind of\r\ncircumstances in which we erred the first time.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Our\r\nwhole existence \u2014 once we\u2019ve placed our trust in the Lord Jesus Christ and\r\ncommitted ourselves to Him \u2014 revolves around our becoming so transformed and\r\nre-shaped in our character, nature and personality that we automatically bring\r\npraise to His glory.\u00a0 <\/span>That\u2019s a phrase\r\nthat gets lost in today\u2019s understanding, so let\u2019s be a little more specific. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\nGreek word used for praise, in this instance, is the term, <\/span>epainos<\/span><\/i><\/b>, which simply means: to be\r\ncommendable, to bring commendation and approval to, to recommend.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

That\r\nbrings us to the word, Glory, which is translated from the applications, but\r\nthe way Paul uses it in this instance is: to dignify, to bring honor and\r\npraise.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Here\u2019s\r\nwhere things get interesting.\u00a0 <\/span>Paul now\r\nstates that when we have fully committed ourselves to the Lord Jesus Christ \u2014\r\nand that means NO COMPROMISE, no drawing back of any kind \u2014 we are sealed with\r\nthe Holy Spirit of promise.\u00a0 <\/span>Now there\u2019s\r\na strange phrase.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Literally,\r\nwhat Paul is stating is that Holy Spirit makes an announcement over us, a\r\npledge of things to come<\/span><\/i><\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

This\r\nis NOT the baptism of the Holy Spirit, and this is not \u201cbeing filled with the\r\nSpirit.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>Rather, this is an\r\nassurance that He is prepared to lead us into a realm of life that differs\r\ntotally from everything we\u2019ve known and walked in the past<\/i><\/b>.\u00a0 <\/span>He is prepping us for the time and the day\r\nwhen Holy Spirit calls us to \u201cCome Up Higher.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>It doesn\u2019t mean that we \u201chave arrived.\u201d\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Many folks go astray in their thinking, their beliefs and\/or their\r\ndoctrines, thinking that once they\u2019ve reached this point in their walk with God\r\nthat they have arrived at some pinnacle.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>No, they haven\u2019t!\u00a0 <\/span>In fact, they\r\nhaven\u2019t even walked through the portal yet.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Have\r\nI bored you to death yet with my repetitions of basic principles that we have\r\ncovered in the past (and probably on several occasions)?\u00a0 <\/span>What I\u2019m trying to do is to make this so\r\nclear that it is impossible to miss.\u00a0 <\/span>We\r\nARE being called to Come Up Higher.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Why?\u00a0 <\/span>Because there is so much\r\nmore in God that awaits us!<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

I\r\nwant to take you into some of the experiences that Della and I have had, (and\r\nthat doesn't mean that we have arrived at the \u201chigher\u201d we\u2019ve been called to.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

For\r\nwell over 70 years, I have walked with the Lord.\u00a0 <\/span>During those years, I have had many\r\nadventures with Him.\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019ve been to Heaven\r\nseveral times, had more visits with angels than I could possibly remember,\r\ntraveled throughout time both as far back as the Garden, and literally to the\r\nend of time, experienced the difference between being in time and walking\r\nthrough a portal (many times) into eternity.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Nevertheless\r\nthere has been the constant awareness that I haven\u2019t even begun to know the\r\ndimensions in the Spirit that are available.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>If there is anything I have learned through it all is the fact that\r\nthere is no substitute for the living, breathing presence of the Lord.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Throughout\r\nthe almost 38 years that Della and I have been married, worship has been a\r\nconstant and important part of our existence.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>The Lord drew us together in the midst of worship, and in that\r\nenvironment, we have had some absolutely phenomenal experiences and\r\nvisitations.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\ntwo recent experiences in which I heard the audible voice of the Lord saying to\r\nme, \u201cCome up Higher,\u201d is an extension of what we have experienced at different\r\ntimes, and it is those visitations that have primed us for this next stage of\r\n\u201chigher,\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Let\r\nme preface where I want to go with this quote from Jesus as He was sharing with\r\nthe woman at the well of Samaria.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

John\r\n4:23-24:<\/span><\/u><\/b> But the hour cometh,\r\nand now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in\r\ntruth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\r\n\u00a0<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/sup><\/p>\r\n\r\n

God is<\/i> a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him<\/i>\r\nin spirit and in truth.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

You\r\nsee a key element in this passage, namely that Father is looking for those who\r\nknow what it means to worship Him \u2014 not just in the natural realm, but in the\r\nSpirit, the Holy Spirit.\u00a0 <\/span>I don\u2019t believe\r\nthat it is possible to worship the Lord in the Spirit, and at the same time not\r\nworship Him in truth.\u00a0 <\/span>If a person is\r\nworshiping the Lord in, through, and by Holy Spirit, then it becomes clear that\r\nHoly Spirit doesn\u2019t fake the worship.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>There is nothing false or misleading about worship in the Spirit.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Let\u2019s\r\ntake one more example of how the Lord sees.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>In Proverbs 25, we have a clear picture of where the invitation to \u201cCome\r\nup Higher\u201d originates, and it is not in the heart, or the will, or the purpose\r\nof us as human beings.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Proverbs\r\n25:6-7<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Put not forth thyself in the presence of the king, and stand not\r\nin the place of great men<\/i>: For better it is<\/i> that it be said unto thee, Come up\r\nhither; than that thou shouldest be put lower in the presence of the prince\r\nwhom thine eyes have seen.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

This\r\nis not a passage one might normally use in this situation, but it does make\r\ncertain that our transition into the intimate and trusted presence of the Lord\r\ncomes by His invitation and not because we think we can get there by our own\r\nhuman efforts.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

That\r\nleads me to share some experiences that Della and I had with a group of other\r\nbelievers who shared the thirst for the presence of the Lord and ministering to\r\nHim. Worship has always been something\r\nof an issue with me.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

What\r\nhas been referred to as worship is better classified as song-singing,\r\ntestimonials, preaching, and a fistful of other things.\u00a0 <\/span>Della and I have felt for many years that\r\ntrue worship is ministry TO the Lord.\u00a0 <\/span>We\r\nare after His pleasure and delight.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\r\n\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\r\n\r\n\u00a0<\/span>We\r\nwant to see that He gets the attention He deserves, that our focus is anything\r\nand everything that brings pleasure to His heart\u2019s desire.\u00a0 <\/span>I also believe that this is the true\r\ntranslation of what it means to worship Him in Spirit and in Truth.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

There\r\nis a whole lot of what I refer to as \u201ctestimony music\u201d where we sing about what\r\nthe Lord has done for us.\u00a0 <\/span>Please\r\nunderstand me, I am not criticizing testimony songs.\u00a0 <\/span>They have an important role in God\u2019s economy.\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s just that they are not worship.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Then\r\nthere is instructional music.\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019ve\r\nwritten a fair amount of instructional music from the Word throughout the past\r\n50+ years.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>It is used for teaching and\r\ninstructing God\u2019s people in His ways and His character.\u00a0 <\/span>Again, this isn\u2019t worship, but I believe it\r\nprepares people for worship.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

We\r\nare all familiar with Praise.\u00a0 <\/span>Praise\r\nbeings us into a celebration of the Lord, Who He is and what He does.\u00a0 <\/span>Praise can be classified at times as \u201cbattle\r\nmusic,\u201d music that declares victory over all the warfare pitted against us by\r\nthe Enemy.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

On\r\nthe other hand, worship is addressed directly to the Lord.\u00a0 <\/span>It is an expression of our love to Him.\u00a0 <\/span>It speaks our desire for nothing but Him and\r\nHis intimate presence.\u00a0 <\/span>The wonderful and\r\nincredible thing about real worship is that Holy Spirit uses our tongues to\r\ncommunicate our love to Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.\u00a0 <\/span>It becomes a two-way flow of worship between\r\nus and Holy Spirit activates the intimacy of our love and Father\u2019s love, with\r\nJesus becoming the recipient of all that we pour out.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Sounds\r\nfantastic, doesn\u2019t it?\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s why Della\r\nand I just love to let loose and begin singing in the Spirit.\u00a0 <\/span>What occurs as a result is almost\r\nindescribable!\u00a0 <\/span>It becomes an education\r\nin the ways of the Spirit as we get to see the Lord at work in the midst of\r\nthis worship.\u00a0 <\/span>People are healed spontaneously,\r\ndelivered from evil spirits, restored in their relationships with the Lord and\r\nwith each other, etc., etc.,<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

That\r\nsaid, let me take you to some introductory experiences that Della and had as we\r\nreally began to dig into this realm of worship.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Beginning\r\nsome 40 years ago while leading the House of Praise in Fairbanks, Alaska, we\r\nbegan to let go of the mental and emotional barriers that had prevented us from\r\nreally entering this realm of the Spirit.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Della was our worship leader, and she had been primed by the Lord for\r\nthese new adventures.\u00a0 <\/span>Leicha Barnes was\r\nDella\u2019s longtime friend, and between Della and Leicha, the Lord began to give\r\nthem new praise and worship songs.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>That\u2019s when Holy Spirit gave the song, \u201cI Stand Before Your Throne\u201d to\r\nDella.\u00a0 <\/span>At the same time, the Lord gave\r\nLeicha the song, \u201cInto Thy Secret Chamber.\u201d\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Both songs are written to the Lord as worship, NOT about Him.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

That surrender is generally marked by a release of Holy Spirit using their tongue. They yield total control of their tongue to Holy Spirit and He speaks through them in some language (or languages) they\u2019ve never learned \u2014 and in most cases have never heard.
