\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Yes,\r\nyes! I know that's an archaic word we never see used in the 21st Century, but\r\nit still works.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

It\r\nhas to be a good 17 years ago that I first published a rather lengthy and\r\nexhaustive Open Letter to the Ekklesia<\/span><\/i><\/b> titled,\r\n\"The New Onoma<\/span>.\" It was fresh revelation to\r\nme back then. As we all know, Holy Spirit does not stand still. There are many\r\nlayers of revelation being peeled back for all of us as we near the return of\r\nthe Lord Jesus Christ. This is no exception. I was awakened last night by Holy\r\nSpirit as He began to unfold and enlarge an even greater understanding for me.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

That\r\nsaid, let's lay some foundations before you fade away, put this article down\r\nand say, \"That's all Greek to me.\" \ud83d\ude42<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

One\r\nof the tragedies of \"religion\" is that it seeks to bring everything\r\nto the lowest common denominator. Despite the best efforts of various\r\ntranslators in their efforts to render the old Hebrew texts of the O.T., as\r\nwell as the Greek texts of the N.T., into today's languages in a way that will\r\nbring some understanding and depth of the Word, even the best translations have\r\nsome common failings. The Amplified Bible probably does the best job overall of\r\nhelping folks really grasp some of the levels and layers of revelation that are\r\nhidden beneath the surface.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Even\r\nthe Amplified misses it though, in some key areas, and it is one of those areas\r\nthat I want to share with you. For God's people -- and especially the Bride of\r\nChrist -- to really fathom the vast scope of where the Lord is taking us, and\r\nwhat He will receive in a completed and well-deserved company of people who are\r\nlike Him in every respect!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

I'm\r\nspeaking, of course, of the Hebrew word,<\/span>\r\n<\/span>shem<\/span><\/i><\/span> <\/span>(pronounced like\r\n\"shame\"), and its Greek counterpart,<\/span>\r\n<\/span>onoma<\/span><\/i><\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Most\r\nof you know that the name of Noah's first son was<\/span>\r\n<\/span>Shem<\/span>.\r\nThis is precisely the same word which gets translated in virtually every\r\nEnglish text as the word \"name.\" Ever think about it? Ever wonder why\r\nNoah's first son would be given a name which we would simplistically translate\r\notherwise as nothing more than \"name\"?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Both\r\nDr. William Gesenius<\/span> (in his Hebrew-Chaldee<\/span> Lexicon) and Dr. J. H. Thayer (in his Greek-English\r\nLexicon) give us a pretty clear understanding. Let me quote two passages\r\ndirectly from Thayer's Greek-English Lexicon for the sake of illustration.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\"By\r\na usage chiefly Hebraistic<\/span>, onoma<\/span>\r\n[shem<\/span>] is used for everything which the name covers,\r\neverything the thought or feeling which is roused in the mind brings by\r\nmentioning, hearing, remembering the name -- that is<\/span><\/i>,<\/span> <\/span><\/b>one's rank, authority,\r\ninterests, pleasure, command, excellences, deeds,<\/span><\/b> <\/span>etc<\/span><\/i>.\"<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\"The\r\nOnoma<\/span> of God in the N.T. is used for all those\r\nqualities which, to His worshippers, are summed up in that name, and by which\r\nGod makes Himself known to men; it is therefore equivalent to His divinity,\r\nHis divine majesty and perfections so far forth as these are apprehended,\r\nnamed, and magnified<\/u>.\"<\/span><\/i><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

To\r\nthis we can add a portion of Gesenius<\/span>' definition of<\/span> <\/span>shem<\/span><\/i><\/span>:<\/span> <\/span>\"<\/span><\/i>definite and conspicuous\r\nposition; an appellation, as a mark or memorial of individuality; by\r\nimplication: honor, authority, character<\/span><\/b>.<\/span><\/i>\"<\/span><\/i><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

We\r\ncan therefore safely illustrate and translate the word<\/span> <\/span>shem<\/span><\/i><\/span> <\/span>and\/or<\/span> <\/span>onoma<\/span><\/i><\/span> <\/span>by\r\nsaying that this is representative of one's character, their personality, their\r\nmakeup and -- to sum it up in a single descriptive phrase -- the very essence\r\nof who and what they are!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Are\r\nyou getting the picture? Fine! Now let's go back to Shem.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Without\r\nrepeating all of the events that followed the Flood, the horrific nature of\r\nwhat Ham did to his father, Noah, the way in which Shem took the lead with his\r\nother brother, Japheth, to deal with Ham's atrocity (this is clear, by the way,\r\nin the structure of the Hebrew text of Genesis 9:23), and the peculiar\r\nphraseology of the blessing which came upon Shem as a result (see Genesis\r\n9:26), suffice it to say that Shem became the representation of the character,\r\nthe nature and the very makeup of the Lord. (I would really like to explore\r\nthis further with you, and maybe I'll get to do that in a later Coffee Break.)\r\nHe was the<\/span> <\/span>shem<\/span><\/span> <\/span>of the Lord in the\r\nearth until the Blessing could be passed on to Abraham, and he lived through 13\r\ngenerations until Joseph was 17 years old and sold into slavery in Egypt.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

You\r\nmay wonder where I'm going with all of this, but be patient. I'm still laying\r\nsome more foundations.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

As\r\nthe<\/span> <\/span>shem<\/span><\/span> <\/span>of the Lord, Shem\r\n(the son of Noah) became the blessing of the Lord in flesh and blood. In a very\r\nreal sense of the word, he became a forerunner, a shadow if you will, of the\r\nLord Jesus Christ. He became the Blessing -- the Word -- made flesh and dwelling\r\nin the earth. Without getting into all of the history behind it -- and I've\r\nalready talked about this in previous articles -- Shem's identity for all\r\npractical purposes became known with what we have anglicized into Melchizedek\r\n(or as the Hebrew text puts it: Malkiy<\/span> - Tsedeq<\/span>), the King of Righteousness.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

To\r\nhelp understand the basis under which<\/span>\r\n<\/span>onoma<\/span><\/i><\/span> <\/span>\u2013 and its Hebrew\r\ncounterpart,<\/span> <\/span>shem<\/span><\/span>, \u2013 were and are used as a part of God's economy, names were\r\ngiven at birth (or creation, in the case of Adam and Eve) as a prophecy of what\r\nchildren would become. In most cases those names represented either blessing,\r\nor the fulfillment of some promise of the Lord, or the prophesying of some\r\nblessing to come. In some cases, the names represented the judgment of the\r\nLord. In a few cases, they epitomized a curse which was to come (witness Ichabod<\/span>: the Glory has departed). In every case, the child\r\ngrew to become the living example \u2013 a prophetic picture of that name which was\r\ngiven at birth.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Integrated into this system of giving names\r\n(which God ordained at Creation), we also have the several recorded instances\r\n(e.g., \u201cAbram\u201d into \u201cAbraham;\u201d \u201cJacob\u201d into \u201cIsrael;\u201d the aforementioned \u201cShem\u201d\r\ninto \u201cMelchizedek;\u201d \u201cSaul of Tarsus\u201d into \u201cPaul,\u201d etc.) in which names were\r\nchanged by the Lord to represent the change of nature, character and makeup he\r\nbrought about (or was bringing about) in them.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Earlier\r\nwe said that religion tends to drag things down to the lowest common\r\ndenominator. In this instance, we have the word, \"name,\" throughout\r\nScripture translated from both shem<\/span> and onoma<\/span>, and unfortunately the true implications of the\r\noriginal text have been lost, or at the very least, glossed over in such a way\r\nthat the use of \"name\" has become a religious formula in many\r\ninstances.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

We\r\ncast out demons \"in Jesus' name\" as though Jesus' name is some kind\r\nof magic amulet. The lesson of the seven sons of Sceva<\/span>\r\nin Acts 19 has largely gotten lost among many Christians. Folks often give\r\ntheir children names without a clue as to the prophetic significance of what\r\nthey are doing. \"Christ in us, the hope of Glory\" is an almost\r\nethereal, mystical concept without any real grasp of the authority and power\r\ninvested, and being \"in Christ\" has become a religious catch phrase.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

He was not intending the use of His\r\nname as some magic formula to ward off or drive out evil spirits. His intention\r\nwas that we would come against them in His onoma<\/span>. See\r\nthe difference? Are you beginning to see where we are headed with this? We're\r\nnot talking a formula. We're not talking about using the name, Jesus, or the\r\nname, Yeshua<\/span>, or the name, Jehovah, or the name\r\nImmanuel, or any one of the other names used to describe Him throughout the\r\nWord.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

I have a friend in Puerto Rico whose\r\nname is Je-sus<\/span>. That's a hyphenated pronunciation. I\r\nhave Hispanic friends who are likewise named Je-sus<\/span>,\r\nor Jesus (if you prefer). Get the idea? It's not about rattling off a Greek\r\npronunciation of Yeshua<\/span> that has all that authority\r\nor power. It's about functioning, operating, living, existing, being in the\r\nvery character and personality, the makeup of who and what Jesus (or Yeshua<\/span>), the Son of God IS!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

In John 5:43 - 44, Jesus addresses the\r\nunbelief of the Pharisees and Sadducees, saying,<\/span>\r\n<\/span>\"I have come in my Father's onoma<\/i><\/span>,\r\nand you refuse to receive me; (yet) if someone else comes in their onoma<\/i><\/span>, you will receive them. How is it that you can\r\nwillingly receive glory or honor from one another, and yet the (true) glory\r\nwhich comes from the Father, you don't bother to seek at all?\"<\/span> <\/span>(my\r\ntranslation)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Jesus wanted to make it clear that He\r\nwas operating in, through and by the very onoma<\/span>, the shem<\/span> of Father God Himself! He came in Father's nature. He\r\ncame in Father's authority and power. He came as the literal, living extension\r\nof Father -- and He demonstrated it over and over and over and over and over\r\nagain -- and again and again and again, ad infinitum!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Got that? Try this one on:<\/span> <\/span>\"And whatsoever<\/span>\r\n<\/span>you shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be\r\nglorified in the Son. If you ask anything in my name, I will do it.\"<\/span> <\/span>(John\r\n14:13,14 KJV)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Ever ask yourself why it doesn't seem\r\nto always work? How many of you have asked many requests \"in Jesus'\r\nname\" and puzzled over the fact that you asked \"correctly,\" and\r\nnothing happened. In fact your requests were even Scriptural -- you weren't\r\nasking for some far out, fanciful thing. You asked on behalf of someone's\r\nneeds, or perhaps prayed for someone's healing. But nothing happened.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

I'm not being critical or accusatory\r\nhere. We've all experienced this! The answer is simple. The requests were made\r\n\"in Jesus' name\" -- not<\/b> His onoma<\/span>.\r\nNo request goes unanswered when made in His onoma<\/span>.\r\nNow you may think this is just splitting hairs, or playing at semantics, but\r\nthe difference is crucial, and should become very clear as you see the picture\r\nof His onoma<\/span> <\/i>unfold.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

For us to BE in His onoma<\/span>,\r\nfor us to live in His onoma<\/span>.....well, that's a\r\nprocess, folks! And I've yet to meet anyone who got there overnight.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Let's see....how was it that Jesus put\r\nit?<\/span> <\/span>\"Many will say to me\r\nin that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name<\/u>? and in\r\nthy name have cast out devils<\/u>? and in thy name done many wonderful works<\/u>?\r\nAnd then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that\r\nwork iniquity.\"<\/span> <\/span>(Matthew 7:22-23, KJV)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Ouch! Ouch! Ouch! Jesus' name IS\r\npowerful. Demons hate it! But there's a huge differentiation between spouting\r\nthe \"name\" and being IN the name. Jesus makes it clear in this\r\ninstance that the fundamental distinction is having an intimate relationship\r\nwith Him. Intimacy develops a knowing of how someone thinks, what their desires\r\nare, what their goals and purposes are, what they are made of.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

So why make such a point of all this?\r\nBecause it is integral to understanding -- not just the book of Revelation, but\r\n-- the promises of the Bridegroom, Jesus Christ, to that individual and\r\ncorporate Bride He has called unto Himself.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

To\r\nbe able to clearly understand the significance of this \"new onoma<\/span>,\" then, we must first understand the baseline onoma<\/span> of the Lord Jesus Christ by which the \"new onoma<\/span>\" is established. We must first comprehend the\r\nbasis of Jesus\u2019 makeup and character, the essence of who and what He is and has\r\nbeen, before we can come into an understanding of what He will be \u2013 and what we\r\nmust be -- at the time this promise is fulfilled.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\nRevelation, which John saw and wrote, encompasses a single letter to the Bride.\r\nIt contains a theme which is repeated eight times,<\/span> <\/span>\"To him that overcometh<\/span>.\"<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

That\r\nreally is what this discussion is all about. This is where I want us to go as\r\nwe explore the onoma<\/span> of the Lord Jesus Christ, and\r\nthe \"new onoma<\/span>\" John prophesied in\r\nRevelation 2:17 and 3:12.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\nRevelation begins with defining the onoma<\/span> of the Lord\r\nin, and as<\/span>,<\/span> <\/span>\"the seven spirits of God.\"<\/span> <\/span>(see\r\nRevelation 1:4) Four times throughout the Revelation, the<\/span> <\/span>\"seven spirits of God\"<\/span>\r\n<\/span>are\r\nmentioned as the standard by which everyone (and everything) is judged.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Twice,\r\na promise is made of receiving a new onoma<\/span><\/span> <\/span>\"to him that overcometh<\/span>,\"<\/span> <\/span>and\r\ntwice we see that new onoma<\/span> in the foreheads of the overcomers<\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

[Allow\r\nme to pause momentarily here to point out that the significance of this\r\nprophecy of the new onoma<\/span> being in the foreheads of\r\nthe overcomers<\/span> relates to the thought patterns, the\r\nmindset, the kinds of choices -- in other words, the way a person thinks, both\r\nconsciously and unconsciously. The overcomer<\/span>, in this\r\ninstance, overcomes the way the world thinks. The overcomer<\/span>\r\ngains victory over the Enemy's mindset and agenda.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\nuse of this phrase \"in the forehead\" occurs numerous times throughout\r\nthe Word, and it is a common Hebrew metaphor to denote one's mindset, their\r\nwill, their thought patterns. Witness, therefore, David taking Goliath down\r\nwith a stone in his forehead. It was a prophetic act to denote the authority\r\nand power of God striking down a mindset of rebellion and hatred of God and His\r\npeople. (That's a whole different study, and I won't take time to explore that\r\none today.)]<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

John\r\nbegan his letters to the seven Ekklesias<\/span> like this:<\/span> <\/span>\"John to the seven Ekklesias<\/span>\r\nwhich are in Asia: Grace be unto you, and peace from Him which is, and which\r\nwas, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are<\/span> <\/span>(<\/span>enopion<\/span><\/span>)<\/span> <\/span>in the place of and\r\noccupy (before, KJV) His throne.\"<\/span>\r\n<\/span>(Revelation\r\n1:4) He begins this Revelation by establishing the fact that it is the Seven\r\nSpirits who are in the place of rulership<\/span> \u2013 that\r\nthese Seven Spirits are the very character and makeup, the essence of God\r\nHimself.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

As\r\nhe addresses the Ekklesia<\/span> in Sardis, he says,<\/span> <\/span>\"These things says He who has the seven Spirits of God, and\r\nthe seven stars.\"<\/span> <\/span>(Revelation 3:1) In this\r\nattention-getter, John uses the totality of the Lord\u2019s makeup as the yardstick\r\nby which Sardis is measured. (Several years ago I did a rather lengthy\r\nseries titled Seven Nations, Seven Letters<\/b> in which this subject is\r\ncovered much more exhaustively. It is available upon request.)<\/i><\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

In\r\nRevelation 4:5, John writes,<\/span> <\/span>\"Out of the throne proceeded lightnings<\/span>,\r\nand thunders, and sounds; and seven lamps of fire burning before the throne,\r\nwhich are the seven Spirits of God.\"<\/span>\r\n<\/span>Now\r\nhe illustrates a very basic part of the nature and makeup of the Lord in the\r\npicture of these lamps of fire, and I will deal with this as we go forward with\r\nthis discussion.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Clear\r\nenough so far? In case you think that I'm really stretching a point to say that\r\nthe seven Spirits of God comprise the onoma<\/span> of Jesus\r\nChrist, read on.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

John\r\nmakes his fourth reference to these seven Spirits of God in Revelation 5:6,\r\nwhere he says,<\/span> <\/span>\"And I saw and\r\nbeheld in the midst of the throne and the four living creatures, and in the\r\nmidst of the elders, a Lamb standing as having been slain, having seven horns\r\nand seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God<\/u> which have been sent\r\ninto all the earth.\"<\/span> <\/span>Finally, John makes clear that the Lamb\r\nwhich was slain (whom they all knew to be Jesus Christ) was He in whom\r\nconsisted the Seven Spirits of God.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

I\r\nwon't take the time in this discussion to deal with all of these metaphors\r\nsince they are peripheral to that which the Holy Spirit is saying concerning\r\nthe new onoma<\/span>. It is important, however, to identify\r\nthese seven Spirits, and that's where we will begin in the next Coffee Break.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n
