ANOTHER COFFEE BREAK: SUPERNATURAL MATURITY, Part 11<\/h2><\/div><\/div><\/div>

We begin again today with the amplified version of Jesus'\r\ndeclaration of blessing for those who are persecuted:<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Matthew 5:10-12<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u201cBlessed and highly favored by the King [of Kings] are those who\r\nare harassed, molested, mistreated, or pursued after with hostile intent simply\r\nbecause they have been justified [by faith (in Jesus Christ and His\r\nanointing)]; royalty, and Kingdom rule shall be theirs.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Blessed and highly favored by the King [of Kings] whenever men\r\nor women will seek to defame you, to rail at you or taunt you, harassing and\r\npursuing you with malice, saying in public or writing false and hurtful\r\naccusations about you to others, seeking to ruin your reputation because of\r\nyour relationship with me [on account of Who I AM \u2014 and who you are in me].<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Rejoice \u2014 exult, sing, dance, enjoy yourself \u2014 because each time\r\nyou are mistreated for my sake, your reward and place at the Seat of Order in\r\nthings eternal is enhanced and magnified.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Consider yourself in the same company of the prophets before you\r\nwho likewise were harassed, molested, mistreated, defamed, and falsely accused\r\nbecause of My Word in and through them.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>(RAC Translation and Amplification)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

We've\r\ntalked thus far about the division that the Enemy wants to bring among\r\nfamilies, and I've shared with you a bit of history in our family heritage. I'd\r\nlike to wrap up this area of sharing with a few more examples taken from\r\npersonal experience within what we would normally refer to as \"the Family\r\nof God.\" Because of the threat the Family of God represents to Satan,\r\nnowhere is the attempt to divide and conquer and persecute more evident, and\r\nnowhere is the blessing and favor of the Lord more evident for those who suffer\r\npersecution. At the same time, the fruit that comes from standing in the midst\r\nof the persecution is some of the best seen in the Kingdom of God.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

During\r\na transition period in 1978 while getting ready for a return to Barrow, Alaska,\r\nI fellowshipped with a Charismatic church group in Anchorage and came to know\r\nall of the people involved in its ministry locally as well as throughout the\r\nstate, and even some in missions in other countries. Because of our family\r\nlegacy in missions and ministry throughout Alaska, I was given ready access to\r\nthe pulpit from time to time as well as the ministry of praise and worship with\r\ntheir musicians.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

1978\r\nwas still very much at the height of ministry activity for me in the realm of\r\ndeliverance from evil spirits. [That's not to suggest that it has stopped, but\r\nrather that the focus has shifted in the way we minister deliverance.] Many of\r\nthe fellow-ministers I shared with were from traditional Pentecostal\r\nbackgrounds where the concept of a believer being afflicted by evil spirits was\r\ntotally contrary to their doctrines.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

I\r\nwas invited to come and minister in one of the satellite churches on the Kenai\r\nPeninsula one weekend, and -- wouldn't you know it -- Holy Spirit sets things\r\nup to minister to folks who were being afflicted by evil spirits! Following\r\nboth the morning and evening services, the time of personal ministry -- along\r\nwith quite visible manifestations as the spirits departed -- easily lasted for\r\na couple of hours AFTER the time of teaching.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Returning\r\nto Anchorage the following day I was met by a very grim delegation from the\r\nCharismatic church who had heard what had taken place. They made it clear that\r\nI was to meet with their entire ministerial board later that week at a luncheon\r\nto explain why I would minister that way knowing that they were opposed to such\r\nministry.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

There\r\nwere perhaps 12 senior leaders, pastors, evangelists, prophets and teachers who\r\nsat around the lunch table to grill me on \"my doctrine.\" That\r\nluncheon turned into an inquisition of sorts as they tried to refute the\r\nscriptural basis for the ministry of deliverance among Christians. There came a\r\npoint in the discussion when they -- to a man -- conceded that I was on sound\r\nscriptural grounds for the ministry; and then their senior prophet said\r\ndirectly to me, \"we cannot afford for you to continue this ministry in our\r\nfellowship. It contradicts everything we have taught, and we will not have\r\ndivision among the people over this. People will think that we're just lying to\r\nthem, and they'll leave!\"<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\nHoly Spirit rose up in me at that and I stood to my feet at the end of the\r\ntable as the following prophetic message from Jeremiah 8 literally poured from\r\nmy mouth:\u00a0<\/span>\"How do ye say, We\u00a0are<\/i>\u00a0wise, and the law\r\nof the LORD\u00a0is<\/i>\u00a0with us? Lo, certainly in vain made He\u00a0it<\/i>;\r\nthe pen of the scribes\u00a0is<\/i>\u00a0in vain.\u00a0The wise\u00a0men<\/i>\u00a0are\r\nashamed, they are dismayed and taken: lo, they have rejected the word of the\r\nLORD; and what wisdom\u00a0is<\/i>\u00a0in them?Therefore<\/span>\r\nwill I give their wives unto others,\u00a0and<\/i>\u00a0their fields to them\r\nthat shall inherit\u00a0them<\/i>: for everyone from the least even unto the\r\ngreatest is given to covetousness, from the prophet even unto the priest every\r\none dealeth<\/span> falsely.\u00a0For they have healed the\r\nhurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when\u00a0there\r\nis<\/i>\u00a0no peace<\/u>.\u00a0Were they ashamed when they had committed\r\nabomination? nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush:\r\ntherefore shall they fall among them that fall: in the time of their visitation\r\nthey shall be cast down, saith<\/span> the LORD.\"<\/span>\u00a0(Jeremiah\r\n8:8-12)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

I\r\ncontinued on: \"How can you tell these people that they are free when they\r\nare suffering, in torment from evil spirits, and fighting with sicknesses and\r\ndiseases? How dare you tell people that they cannot be suffering with evil\r\nspirits, and you say to them that once they're saved, they are automatically\r\nset free? As a practical matter, they have no power to fight against evil\r\nspirits until they've been baptized in the Holy Spirit! Mark 16:17 makes clear\r\nthat one of the very first evidences of being filled with the Spirit is the\r\nability to cast out demons! You have the gall to say to folks, \"Peace,\r\nPeace,\" when they have no peace!\"<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Guess\r\nI was a bit astonished at my spontaneous reaction to them. I shook my head and\r\nsat back down. The group quickly got to their feet, made it clear that I was no\r\nlonger welcome to be in any of their churches, and that was that! The following\r\nSunday evening, one of their senior pastors stood behind the pulpit and said to\r\nthe church, \"I wouldn't touch Regner<\/span> Capener<\/span> with a ten-foot pole!\"<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Once\r\nagain, you can see the picture of Jesus' statement,\u00a0<\/span>\"Men and women in a covenant relationship with Me will find\r\n[even] their non-covenanting [spiritual] family members to be their hostile\r\nadversaries (who will fight and oppose them).\"<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Doesn't\r\nlook like much of a blessing at the moment, does it? Ahhh<\/span>,\r\nbut there's more to this story!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

In\r\nthe months that followed, Jeremiah's prophecy came to fulfillment among them as\r\nseveral of their families broke up in divorce, at least three of the wives\r\nwound up marrying other men, one of their prophets went to prison on a sex\r\ncharge, the other prophet died a year or so later from a painful disease and\r\nthe church split down the middle. Sounds even less like a blessing, doesn't it?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Over\r\nthe decade that followed, the same pastor who had made the statement that he\r\nwouldn't touch me with a ten-foot pole reversed his stance and began\r\nencouraging the ministry of deliverance in his church. He was leading the\r\nbreakaway church which, by this time, was larger than the original church\r\nfellowship he had left. The new church was flourishing, the Kingdom of God was\r\ngrowing by leaps and bounds and serious repairs and reconciliation were\r\nunderway where breaches had taken place. By this time I had returned to\r\nAnchorage after a decade of ministry in Barrow and Fairbanks.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

It\r\nsoon became apparent that two other evangelist\/pastors who had been at the\r\ntable with that group of 12 had reversed their stance on the ministry of\r\ndeliverance. On at least one occasion that I can remember, one of them even\r\ncalled me for counsel in dealing with a specific issue.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

One\r\nday I received a call from the son of the original senior leader of the old\r\nCharismatic fellowship. His dad had retired and he had become the new senior\r\npastor. He had, however, been a part of that group of ministers on that fateful\r\nluncheon day. \"Would you meet me for lunch today?\" he said.\r\n\"Absolutely!\" I looked forward to it.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Sitting\r\ndown at the lunch table he broke the silence by saying softly, \"I marvel\r\nthat you can be sitting across a table from me, after all the water that has\r\ngone under the bridge.\" Reaching across the table to take his hand, I\r\nsaid, \"Brother, I hold you no ill will whatever! Whatever God has done out\r\nof all that transpired has worked for the good of the whole Body. When we\r\nparted that day, I knew that it wasn't up to me to bring the kind of revelation\r\nneeded. Holy Spirit was going to have to do that. I've never felt badly towards\r\nyou or anyone else in the church.\"<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

There\r\nwas real fellowship together at the table that day. God had done a rather\r\nspectacular thing in healing the perceived breach. As we got up to leave, this\r\npastor said to me, \"From me to you, you are always welcome in our\r\nchurch!\"<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

One\r\nof the issues that we face in the Body of Christ today is that we have a bad\r\nhabit of viewing events from a \"now\" perspective. If we see division\r\ntake place, our immediate reaction is that it is bad. We don't see the\r\nlong-term picture. If we don't see instant vindication of either the individual\r\nor the truth that was spoken or represented, we tend to believe the negative\r\nabout the individual who is under attack, or at the very least, that which he\r\nor she represents. Consider what Paul wrote to the Ekklesia<\/span>\r\nin Corinth when he was talking about the Table of the Lord.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

I\r\nCorinthians 11:18-19:\u00a0<\/span>For first of all, when ye\r\ncome together in the church, I hear that there be divisions among you; and I\r\npartly believe it.\u00a0For there must be also heresies among you, that they\r\nwhich are approved may be made manifest<\/u>\u00a0among you.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\nword used in the KJV -- heresies -- comes from the Greek word,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>hairesis<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>which literally\r\nmeans:\u00a0<\/span>disunion (from choices)<\/span><\/u><\/b>. Thayer defines\u00a0 it like\r\nthis:\u00a0<\/span>dissensions arising from diversity of opinions and aims,\r\nchoosing, choice, that which is chosen<\/span><\/u><\/b>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Paul's\r\npoint is that these dissensions and disunity arises so that (and they) which\r\nGod specifically approves can be made known -- and here is the crux of it\r\n--\u00a0<\/span>so that the truth can\r\nbe manifested for all to see, and people can then correct their wrong choices<\/span><\/i><\/b>. Persecution and\r\nopposition produces this kind of dynamic!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Jesus\r\nwasn't kidding when He said,\u00a0<\/span>\u201cBlessed and highly\r\nfavored by the King [of Kings] whenever men or women will seek to defame you,\r\nto rail at you or taunt you, harassing and pursuing you with malice, saying in\r\npublic or writing false and hurtful accusations about you to others, seeking to\r\nruin your reputation because of your relationship with me [on account of Who I\r\nAM \u2014 and who you are in me].<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Not\r\nonly are we the recipients of that blessing, the Body as a whole is blessed.\r\nThe Body of Christ grows, it multiplies, it expands, understanding and maturity\r\ntake place, there is a Kingdom prosperity that comes (and I point out -- in the\r\nlong term!) of the show that God puts on as a result of the harassment, the false\r\naccusations and the malicious defamation that comes by standing in His Truth!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

One\r\nmore personal story for the sake of illustration, and I'll quit.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

When\r\nI returned to Barrow in 1978, it was not my intention to begin another church\r\nfellowship. I was focused on Christian television and bringing the ministry of\r\nCBN to the arctic. A young pastor (late twenties or early thirties) had been\r\nassigned by the denomination to the church I had helped my Dad build. My hope\r\nwas to be an encouragement and a help to this young pastor and support him.\r\nThat, obviously, was not going to happen. As soon as he heard my name and\r\nrealized who I was, he perceived me as an instant threat to his leadership and\r\nauthority.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

He\r\nmade it abundantly clear that I was not welcome and that I could forget about\r\nany ministry in Barrow. You couldn't help but feel sorry for him because of his\r\nignorance and fear, and I did my best to try to allay those fears. Holy Spirit\r\nobviously had other things in mind. An old friend who had helped Dad to get the\r\nproperty on which to build the church and provide the vehicle to haul gravel\r\nwith in order to create a good foundation was now the presiding elder at the\r\nPresbyterian church. He asked if I would serve in an interim capacity as\r\ntheir\u00a0 pastor until the missions board could assign a permanent pastor.\r\nThat's another story with implications I can't take time to get into today, but\r\nthe four months I did serve as their interim pastor saw a move of Holy Spirit\r\nin their midst that was absolutely wonderful!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

In\r\nthe weeks and months that followed, a number of folks approached me about my\r\ncontinuing to pastor and forming a new fellowship. Although that new fellowship\r\nnever became very large (it was more of an overgrown home fellowship that\r\nexpanded beyond the walls of our home) it was perceived by the young pastor as\r\na threat to his domain, and he began to actively speak out against us as\r\nheretics, or -- using the picture of the native culture -- someone who\r\ndishonored his father and abandoned his father's faith.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Because\r\nChristian television was my primary objective, and I needed a way to fund the\r\ndevelopment of television outlets in the arctic, a door of opportunity opened\r\nfor me to purchase ASA Television from the Arctic Slope Regional Corporation.\r\nASA became Arctic Slope Audio and North Slope Communications -- two distinctly\r\nseparate businesses with different focuses in retail consumer entertainment and\r\nbusiness communications. The profits from these businesses went to purchase\r\nequipment and fund the building of tiny little TV stations in remote villages\r\nthroughout the northland.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

I\r\nhad my hands full, operating two businesses, pastoring<\/span>\r\na small fellowship, building small TV stations and promoting the growth of\r\nChristian television throughout Alaska. Without realizing what was taking\r\nplace, a target was painted directly on my backside for people with a religious\r\nagenda, and they quickly took advantage of it.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

It\r\nstarted with threatening phone calls. \"We know that God didn't send you\r\nhere, and we're going to drive you out!\" Try this one. \"The next time\r\nyou step out the door, you're going to get a bullet through the face.\"\r\n(That call was repeated more times than I can count.) Then there was the\r\nsomewhat humorous hate mail in the form of post cards. \"Go directly to\r\nhell. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200. Go straight to hell.\"<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Then\r\nthings began to spiral upward. I've already noted in previous Coffee Breaks the\r\ntwo times a sniper tried to take me out. My oldest daughter was shot at six\r\ntimes. My oldest son and second daughter were repeatedly attacked in the dark\r\nas they were on their way home from school (we were in the midst of the 66-day\r\nperpetual darkness cycle) by men who would pick them up and throw them against\r\nthe side of a building, and they would come home bruised and bloody. I wound up\r\nsending them away from Barrow to be with my parents at Saint Paul Island for\r\ntheir own protection.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

These\r\nevents are only a drop in the bucket of the persecution that unfolded but in\r\nthe midst of it all, the Lord spoke to me and told me that the day would come\r\nwhen many of these same people would spontaneously fall on their knees in the\r\nmiddle of the streets and cry out in repentance. By late in 1980 it became\r\nclear that we were going to have to move our operations center to Fairbanks for\r\nCBN's ministry to expand, and we made that move in 1981.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Seven\r\nyears later, Dwain McKenzie -- my lifetime friend and brother in the Lord --\r\nwas back in Barrow pastoring<\/span> the church Dad had\r\nfounded. He called me one day to report that people were literally falling on\r\ntheir knees in the streets of Barrow, calling on the Lord.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Was\r\nthe persecution fun? Not even! Was it necessary to stand in the midst of it and\r\nnot give up? Absolutely. Was it worth it? The lives that have been changed and\r\ntransformed by the power of God as a result are clear testimony and proof that\r\npersecution yields the blessing of the Lord. The Kingdom of God has expanded!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n
