ANOTHER COFFEE BREAK: SUPERNATURAL MATURITY, Part 8<\/h2><\/div><\/div><\/div>

In this week's Coffee Break, while we continue with the same\r\ntheme we began last week in dealing with being God's peacemakers, I'd like to\r\nshare with you a story from my early childhood years -- a story which marked\r\nthe beginning of my parents' miraculous years of ministry in Alaska -- a story\r\nwhich illustrates the authority that we have. Once again, here is what Jesus\r\nsaid:<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Matthew 5:9<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the\r\nchildren of God.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

And\r\n-- again -- as we did last week, here is an amplified translation of that\r\nverse.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u201cBlessed and highly favored by the King [of Kings] are those who\r\nknow what it means to have the peace of God \u2014 those who pursue with all\r\ndiligence that peace in their being and in their environment \u2014 for God will\r\ncause them to be known and referred to as His mature and responsible sons (to\r\nwhom He has entrusted His business.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>(RAC Translation and\r\nAmplification)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

We\r\ntalked last week about Jesus being out in the storm \u2014 in this case, a virtual\r\ntornado or large waterspout on the Sea of Galilee (and this was no ordinary\r\nstorm) \u2014 and simply commanding,\u00a0<\/span>\u201cPeace, be still!\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>That storm died instantly.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

In\r\nthe summer of 1944, my father was at sea during the seven-week fishing season,\r\nhoping to make enough money with the fish he caught to pay off the thousand\r\ndollar debt on the church building he had built in Ilwaco, Washington.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Ilwaco\r\nwas known as a salmon fishing port, but this year the Japanese current had\r\nswung way off course and was bringing Albacore Tuna into the pacific waters.\r\nDad was not a fisherman at all by trade, and in fact had never fished\r\ncommercially in his life. He was, by all accounts, a \u201clandlubber\u201d \u2014 a farm boy\r\nfrom Minnesota and North Dakota \u2014 whom God had called to Alaska. Ilwaco was\r\njust a stop on the way to Alaska, and 1944 was the year for the family to make\r\nthe move north.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Dad\r\nfelt that he could not leave for Alaska and leave an unpaid debt behind on the\r\nchurch he had built in this fishing community. Having no other means at hand,\r\nhe convinced a local cannery owner from Raymond, Washington to loan him a boat\r\nso that he could try his hand at fishing. When the fishing season opened, the\r\ncannery owner reluctantly provided Dad with a 30-foot boat. The boat had no\r\ncabin so he was at the whim of the elements.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

That\r\nfirst week of the fishing season saw God provide a catch of fish that shocked\r\nboth the cannery owner, and the professional fisherman from the area. The owner\r\ndecided he\u2019d underestimated this landlubber-preacher, and provided him with a\r\n50-foot boat with a cabin to finish the season.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

Week\nafter week after week, the size of Dad\u2019s catch of fish amazed the fishing\ncommunity and the Associated Press decided to cover this crazy\n\u201cLandlubber-Preacher-Fisherman.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Without\ngetting into the whole story here, we come to the seventh and final week of the\nfishing season. Dad had been routinely fishing a hundred or so miles to the\nwest of Astoria. The seasoned fisherman saw the makings of a big storm at sea\nand decided it was time to head back into port.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

The\nlack of experience at sea left Dad with no indicators that anything was amiss\nwith the weather, and by late Wednesday the seas were tossing the boat like a\ncork. By Thursday morning, the boat was cracking and making noises such that he\nknew this just couldn\u2019t continue.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

The\nwaves had increased to the point that they were fifty and sixty feet high, and\nfrequently breaking over the top of the boat, submerging it momentarily before\nit bobbed back to the surface.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In\nhis cabin, Dad prayed and said, \u201cLord, I know you didn\u2019t call me to Alaska just\nto have me drown at sea.\u201d He got to his feet stood at the cabin door and waited\nfor one of the big waves to pass. He opened the door, ran out on the deck and\nstretched his hand over the water.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

\u201cIn\nthe name of Jesus, I command you, Peace! Be Still!\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Then\nhe ran back into the cabin and waited. Within twenty minutes the storm had\nceased and the waters were glassy calm. The storm had blown him more than two\nhundred miles out to sea \u2014 well beyond the range of his ability to return to\nshore. A gentle breeze sprang up and began to blow him back towards the Oregon\ncoast.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Meanwhile,\nthe fish began to bite. Dad had no money to purchase professional fishing gear\nso he had simply strung out a bunch of lines over the side of the boat.\nSuddenly all of the lines were tugging and he began to pull in one fish after\nanother. Hour after hour after hour he pulled in the fish. Before long the hold\nwas completely full, so he began throwing fish in the cabin.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Back\nat port, the Ilwaco fishermen came to visit Mom and said, \u201cMrs. Capener, we\u2019re\nreally sorry about the loss of your husband at sea. If you like, we\u2019ll begin\nmaking preparations for his funeral.\u201d They meant well, but had no idea what God\nwas doing, and the kind of display He was about to put on for them.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

You\nsee, the overwhelming majority of the fishermen had already begun the process\nof cleaning their boats and gear and putting things away for the season. They\nrecognized the storm as a killer storm and had no intention of being caught in\nit. Besides, they had all had pretty good seasons and were not going to take\nany chances.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

For\nthe commercial fishermen, and for the people of Ilwaco, Dad had lost his life\nin the storm. There had been no sign of him since the storm hit. He had no\nradio gear on board and no way to let folks know that he was still alive.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Mom,\nlikewise knew that God wasn\u2019t going to pull the plug on them after having\ncalled them to Alaska and she put off the fishermen\u2019s offer saying, \u201cThanks, but\nwe\u2019ll wait. God has everything well in control.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Early\nSaturday, the well-meaning fishermen made one more try. \u201cMrs. Capener, really!\nYou have to face reality! No one could have survived that storm. Please let us\nbegin making preparations for the funeral.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Her\nanswer was short and sweet. \u201cNo, we\u2019ll wait.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Late\nSaturday afternoon, someone spotted a dot on the horizon and by the time Dad\nmade it into port, much of the community was there to greet him. They couldn\u2019t\nbelieve their eyes!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Dad\nwas standing knee-deep in fish. The Albacore Tuna covered the decks, were\ncovering the floor of the cabin, over and under his bunk and camp stove, and\nall around the wheel house. The decks were riding not more than four or five\ninches above the water line.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

When\nhe stepped out on the deck and commanded, \u201cPeace,\u201d not only did the storm die,\nbut nature cooperated with the command. The elements were \u201cset in order\u201d.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

The\nbreezes blew him back into port so that he didn\u2019t have to use up his fuel\nsupply, and the fish began to bite. It proved to be a record catch of fish and\na record-setting season that has never been broken to this day. 39,000 pounds\nof tuna, all caught by hand during the seven-week fishing season, and it\nbrought Dad $6.300.00. The debt on the church was paid off and we were able to\nmove to Alaska in October of that year for ministry to begin among the native\nvillages.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<\/div>

<\/div>\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n

We\n like to sing the verses from Philippians 4:7-8, but consider them in the\n context of what we are sharing today.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Philippians\n4:7-9<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall\nkeep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren,\nwhatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are<\/i> honest,\nwhatsoever things are<\/i> just, whatsoever things are<\/i> pure,\nwhatsoever things are<\/i> lovely, whatsoever things are<\/i> of\ngood report; if there be<\/i> any virtue, and if there be<\/i> any\npraise, think on these things. Those things, which ye have both learned, and\nreceived, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with\nyou.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

When\nthe peace of God commands our minds, our thoughts, and the words which come out\nof our mouths, we become \u201cpeacemakers.\u201d Peace surrounds us. We bring peace with\nus wherever we go.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

I\nshould have included verse 6 in this passage which goes like this:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and\nsupplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

That\nword, \u201ccareful,\u201d is a translation of the Greek word,<\/span> merimnao<\/span><\/i><\/b>, <\/span>which means<\/span>: <\/span>to be troubled with\ncares, to be fretful, to be anxious and worried<\/span><\/u><\/b>.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

So\nmany people have made their own needs and crises the most important thing in\ntheir lives, and they\u2019ve put their trust in money, in \u201cstuff\u201d, in homes, in\nfamily, or in any number of things that ARE NOT the Lord Jesus Christ.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

There\nis no peace in them, and they are not allowing the peace of God to rule in\ntheir hearts and minds and thoughts \u2014 or any part of their being.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Over\nthe past months, Della and I have fielded literally hundreds of phone calls\nfrom people in various stages of utter panic \u2014 some people calling three and\nfour and five times a day looking for some morsel of information that would put\nthem at peace. There\u2019s a huge difference between getting some kind of\ninformation that will satiate worry and actually having God\u2019s peace dictate our\nthoughts and conversation.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

For\nus to be \u201cpeacemakers,\u201d we must first allow the peace of God to rule in us.\nOnce again, peace is a ruler. God\u2019s peace has the ability to overrule every\nconceivable concern, fretfulness or worry that the Enemy would like for us to focus\non.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nWord of God is replete with examples of the power and stupendous authority that\nthe peace of God \u2014 the peace of the Lord Jesus Christ \u2014 can and does exercise\nfor those who yield their own minds, thought processes and conversations to the\nmind of Christ. Let me wrap up this discussion with a translation that I did\nfrom II Corinthians 10:4-6.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

For the weapons and instruments of our war and executed actions\n[against Satan] do not have their origins and [weak, impotent] operation in\nnatural flesh and human abilities, but they are skillful, potent and powerful \u2013\nlike dynamite \u2013 through God to the demolition and extinction of all\nfortified and guarded places of opinions in opposition<\/u>, Bringing\ndown violently and demolishing (to total extinction) all mental reasonings and\nthought processes, and every mental barrier or arrogant and self-elevated\nattitude that justifies itself in opposition to the knowledge of God<\/u>;\nbringing into captivity and making a prisoner every perception of the intellect\nand every mental purpose or determination to the compliance and submission of\nChrist and His anointing [in the same way that He complied with the will and\ndesire of the Father]; And holding in readiness and preparedness the\n[spiritual] fitness to vindicate and punish all refusal to hear what the Spirit\nis saying when your attentive and obedient submission has been satisfied fully\nand executed<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span><\/b>(RAC Translation and\nAmplification)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Next\nweek we will talk about the blessing of persecution! OK, don't look at me in\nthat tone of voice. I'm serious! But you'll have to wait until next week to see\nwhat I mean.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n
