Need to share a personal story with you as a lead-in to today's\r\nCoffee Break. It was December 5, 1960 that I joined the Army. Not long after\r\ncompleting Basic Training at Fort Ord<\/span>, I was standing\r\nout on the tarmac, duffle bag in hand, awaiting being boarded on an aircraft\r\nwith orders that would send me to Ramstein<\/span>, Germany,\r\nwith ultimate deployment to Laos.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Short of my 19th birthday, I was one scared puppy not knowing\r\nwhat lay ahead. I had walked with the Lord for my entire life and was totally\r\ncommitted to whatever He had in store. Being a combat soldier somehow didn't\r\nfit with the pictures of what God had called me to, but there was a firm\r\ndetermination that I would go wherever and whenever He led or directed.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

My company was in the boarding process when a runner came up to\r\nme and said, \"Capener<\/span>, your orders have been\r\nchanged. Stand by.\"\u00a0 I got into a waiting Jeep and was taken back to\r\nthe barracks. Not long thereafter the company commander informed me that I was\r\ngoing to be his clerk typist. He had discovered that I could type and he needed\r\nsomeone to do his paperwork, type out orders for other\u00a0 soldiers, and do\r\nother office work.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Fast forward to the spring of 1963. After a period of having my\r\nMOS changed from infantryman to automotive maintenance (military intelligence,\r\nyou know ) and being stationed for a time at Camp Roberts,\r\nrepairing carburetors and ignition systems for every kind of military vehicle\r\nimaginable, authority had been transferred to the Presidio in San Francisco,\r\nand once again I was on tap to return to status as a combat soldier.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The hand of God had been evident in everything that had\r\ntranspired, and His mercy in keeping me from the front lines was obvious. With\r\nthe call of God into fulltime ministry continually in my spirit, I began looking\r\nat Bible colleges. In April of that year, I went to my commanding officer and\r\nrequested an early discharge so that I could \"prepare for the\r\nministry.\" (I was still programmed with the idea that one has to attend a\r\nBible College or Seminary in order to become a minister -- not understanding at\r\nthe time that God doesn't call the qualified: He qualifies the\r\n\"called.\" )<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

When he asked why in the world I would make a request like that,\r\nmy answer was that I felt like I could better serve my country as a representative\r\nof the Lord Jesus Christ and a minister of the Gospel rather than as an\r\ninfantry soldier. My CO laughed at me and said, \"Son, I've been in this\r\nman's army for 20 years, and I've never seen it happen.\" He allowed as how\r\nhe had \"once prepared for the cloth\" before joining the Army and\r\nsaid, \"I understand where you're coming from. I'll play fair with you and\r\nsend your request to the General, but I can tell you in advance what the answer\r\nwill be.\"<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

A week later he called me and said, \"Capener<\/span>,\r\nget in here! I've got your discharge papers on my desk!\" We were both\r\nastonished, to say the least. \"Only thing I can figure is that you've got\r\nsome pull upstairs,\" he said, with this knowing smile spreading across his\r\nface. My discharge became effective on May 5, 1963, 2\u00a0<\/span><\/b>1\/2<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>years to the day from\r\nwhen I joined. That fall, I enrolled at Bethany Bible College in Santa Cruz.\r\nThe Hand of God and His mercy had been with me from the very beginning.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

OK?\r\nThat brings us to the next character attribute of the Lord Jesus Christ.\r\nBelieve me, when you can learn to operate in God's mercy instead of human\r\ncompassion, you've shifted into a realm of supernatural maturity. It defies\r\nevery area of natural human emotion and requires a complete shift into hearing\r\nwhat Father God says and thinks. My short stint in the Army, and the evidence\r\nof God's mercy there, prepared me for understanding His dimension of mercy in a\r\nway that I'd never known.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Here's\r\nhow the KJV puts Matthew 5:7:\u00a0<\/span>Blessed are the merciful,\r\nfor they shall obtain mercy.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Now,\r\nlet's amplify this out of the Greek text.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Matthew 5:7<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0<\/span>Blessed\r\nand highly favored by the King [of Kings] are those who experience and function\r\nin and with [supernatural and spiritual] compassion; God will see that they\r\nhave His compassion and will have the same kind of compassion on them [in their\r\nplace of need].<\/span>\u00a0(RAC\r\nTranslation and Amplification)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

One\r\nof the biggest failings in the body of Christ today is the substitution of\r\nhuman compassion for Godly compassion. We all have our places of emotional reaction\r\nand concern when we see certain things take place \u2014 especially with people we\r\nknow and love.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

There\r\nis a huge difference between Godly compassion and human compassion. Human\r\ncompassion is based in either the rational logic of human reasoning or human emotion\r\nwith really considering the spiritual consequences of our intervention on\r\nbehalf of the needs we see.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Human\r\nemotion and rational consideration sees the poor, the sick, the desperate,\r\nthose in crisis and reacts by wanting to \u201cfix things.\u201d Human compassion tends\r\nto be very \u201csocialist\u201d in its approach to solving needy situations. If one\r\noperates in the political realm, human compassion says, \u201cjust give some money\r\nto the poor! Money, food, clothes, housing, etc., etc. will fix the problem.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Because\r\nof the huge losses the socialist wing of the Democratic party took in this past\r\nelection, I\u2019ve heard some of their leaders spouting the baloney that, \u201cWe have\r\ncore spiritual values, too! We are concerned with poverty, with health care and\r\nwith the rights of our citizens.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\nstatement all by itself demonstrates that these folks\u00a0DON\u2019T<\/b>\u00a0have\r\nany concept of what real spiritual values are. They may be religious people but\r\nbeing \"religious\" is a far cry from having an intimate walk with the\r\nLord or understanding what Jesus' values are all about.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Religion,\r\nhowever, only amplifies human compassion. The \u201creligious\u201d may call themselves,\r\n\u201cChristian,\u201d but they don\u2019t have a relationship with Jesus Christ \u2013 at least\r\nthe kind of relationship that produces the anointing to give. Their religion is\r\nthe religion of big government and social programs.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

I\r\nhave said it before, and I\u2019ll say it again. There\u00a0IS<\/b>\u00a0a\r\nsolution to poverty! There\u00a0IS<\/b>\u00a0a solution to ongoing sickness\r\nand disease! There\u00a0IS<\/b>\u00a0a solution to the plagues that ravage\r\nthe earth.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

But\r\nthat solution doesn\u2019t come in the form of government programs. It comes with\r\nand through the anointing that the believer has available in Christ Jesus. That\r\nkind of anointing produces Godly compassion. No government will ever be able to\r\ngive and see the kind of results \u2013 or even a fraction thereof \u2013 that\r\nindividuals and ministries can and do produce every day of the week.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Our\r\npoliticians \u2013 many of whom really do have good hearts and good intentions when\r\nit comes to providing for the needy \u2013 have devised these schemes to level our\r\nsociety and get rid of the gap that separates the poor and the rich. Don\u2019t\r\nmisunderstand me. I\u2019m not criticizing either the personal giving or the desire\r\nto give.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Unfortunately,\r\nthey have also taken away both personal initiative, personal freedom and \u2013 most\r\nof all \u2013 the anointing that comes when giving is directed by the Holy Spirit.\r\nBy taking away the anointing that comes in a relationship with Jesus Christ,\r\nthey have also taken away the fruitfulness of the giving. The results\r\ndemonstrate that.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Let\r\nme illustrate with something that Paul wrote to the Ekklesia<\/span>\r\nin Corinth.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

II Corinthians 9:6-14, NASB<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0<\/span>Now this\u00a0I say,<\/i>\u00a0he who sows sparingly will also\r\nreap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.Each<\/span>\r\none\u00a0must do<\/i>\u00a0just as he has purposed in his heart, not\r\ngrudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.\u00a0And God is\r\nable to make all grace abound to you, so that always having all sufficiency in\r\neverything, you may have an abundance for every good deed; as it is written,<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u201cHe scattered abroad, he gave to the\r\npoor,<\/span><\/o:p>\r\n<\/span>His righteousness endures forever.\u201d<\/span>\r\n<\/o:p>\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Now He who supplies seed to the sower<\/span>\r\n and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase\r\n the harvest of your righteousness; you will be enriched in everything for all\r\n liberality, which through us is producing thanksgiving to God.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

For the ministry of this service is not only fully supplying the\r\nneeds of the saints, but is also overflowing through many thanksgivings to God.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Because of the proof given by this ministry, they will glorify\r\nGod for\u00a0your<\/i>\u00a0obedience to your confession of the gospel of\r\nChrist and for the liberality of your contribution to them and to all, while\r\nthey also, by prayer on your behalf, yearn for you because of the surpassing\r\ngrace of God in you.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

We\u2019ve\r\nbeen all over the map talking about the concept of mercy as seen in Matthew\r\n5:7, but there is still an aspect of it that we haven\u2019t covered. The Greek word\r\ntranslated \u201cmercy\u201d in this instance \u2014 and literally without exception\r\nthroughout the New Testament \u2014 is the word,\u00a0eleeo<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

J.H.\r\nThayer gives us the following interpretation:\u00a0<\/span>to be compassionate by word or deed,\r\nspecifically by divine grace or empowerment<\/span><\/u><\/b>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

By\r\nway of comparison, we see the terms \u201cmercy\u201d and \u201ccompassion\u201d used as a contrast\r\nto each other in Paul\u2019s letter to the Romans (9:15), and this is the only place\r\nin Scripture where the Greek word,\u00a0oikteiro<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>, appears. This word,\r\ntranslated \u201ccompassion,\u201d more literally means:\u00a0<\/span>to exercise pity<\/span><\/u><\/b>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

That\r\nword,\u00a0oikteiro<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>,\r\nis perhaps a better description of human compassion. We have pity on someone\r\nand step in to help or alleviate their situation without regard for the end\r\nresult.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Take\r\na look, however, at how God\u2019s mercy\/compassion is defined in the Word.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Romans 9:15-18<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0<\/span>For He saith<\/span> to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have\r\nmercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.\u00a0So\r\nthen\u00a0it is<\/i>\u00a0not of him that willeth<\/span>,\r\nnor of him that runneth<\/span>, but of God that showeth<\/span> mercy.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

For the scripture saith<\/span> unto Pharaoh,\r\nEven for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might show my power in\r\nthee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth. Therefore\r\nhath he mercy on whom he will\u00a0have mercy<\/i>, and whom he will he hardeneth<\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Are\r\nyou seeing the difference? The mercy of God is not dependent on prevailing\r\ncircumstances. God\u2019s mercy \u2014 His compassion \u2014 is entirely a function of His\r\nsovereign purposes for His people.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

He\r\nsees the outcome and final results of His decision to intervene and alter the\r\ncircumstances or outcome of any given situation for individuals.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Paul\r\ndraws a comparison that every believer would understand out of Israel\u2019s\r\ndeliverance from Egypt. The Lord makes it clear that He was the one who raised\r\nup Pharaoh in order to show His power in the earth and to put His Name, His\r\ncharacter, His makeup, His authority and power on display throughout the earth.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

In\r\nverse 18, Paul writes,\u00a0\u201cTherefore hath he\r\nmercy on whom he will\u00a0have mercy<\/i>, and whom he will he hardeneth<\/span>.\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

To\r\nthe rational, reasoning human thinking, it almost sounds arbitrary and\r\nperverse, but Paul doesn\u2019t stop there in making clear the realm where God\u2019s\r\nmercy operates.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Romans 9:19-24<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0<\/span>Thou\r\nwilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his\r\nwill?\u00a0Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest<\/span>\r\nagainst God?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Shall the thing formed say to him that formed\u00a0it<\/i>,\r\nWhy hast thou made me thus?\u00a0Hath not the potter power over the clay, of\r\nthe same lump to make one vessel unto honour<\/span>, and\r\nanother unto dishonour<\/span><\/u>?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

What<\/span><\/i>\u00a0if God, willing to show\u00a0his<\/i>\u00a0wrath, and to\r\nmake his power known,\u00a0endured with much longsuffering the vessels of\r\nwrath fitted to destruction<\/u>:\u00a0And that he might make known the riches\r\nof his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto\r\nglory,\u00a0Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the\r\nGentiles?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Understand?\r\nWhat Paul is saying is that there are individuals whom God has specifically\r\ncreated whose end is destruction, to whom He will endure \u201cwith much\r\nlongsuffering\u201d so that when judgment falls, the riches of His Glory will be\r\nseen in the earth. Again, he takes this a further step so that there can be no\r\nmisunderstanding of what God is about.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Romans 9:25-28, NASB<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>As He says also in Hosea,<\/span><\/o:p>\r\n<\/span>\u201cI will call those who were not My\r\npeople, \u2018My people,\u2019 And her who was not beloved, \u2018beloved.\u2019<\/span>\u00a0And it shall be\r\nthat in the place where it was said to them, \u2018you are not My people,\u2019 There\r\nthey shall be called sons of the living God.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\r\n<\/o:p>\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Isaiah cries out concerning Israel, \u201cThough the number of the sons of Israel be like the sand of the sea,\r\n it is the remnant that will be saved<\/span>;\u00a0for the\u00a0 Lord will execute his word on the earth, thoroughly\r\n and quickly<\/span>.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\nmercy of God has always been with a view towards the end result of having a\r\npeople who operate in and with His character, His makeup, His personality, His\r\nauthority and His power. His purpose \u2014 from Day 1 \u2014 has been the having a race\r\nof beings who are His Family.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\nmercy \u2014 the compassion \u2014 of God is NOT pity. It isn\u2019t simply feeling sorry for\r\npeople because of the state they find themselves in. God wasn't feeling sorry\r\nfor me or having compassion on me because of my fears when I was in the Army.\r\nHe was seeing far into the future, preparing me to walk in His mercy and extend\r\nthat mercy to hundreds and thousands of people He would intersect with my life.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

His\r\nintervention in the lives of His people is that there will be nothing lacking,\r\nnothing missing in who they are and who they become. The fact that He\r\nintervenes in some situations, and some situations He sits back and allows to\r\nmove forward of their own weight and momentum is because His compassion for us\r\ncannot permit us to be short-changed in the development of His character and\r\nnature in us. Is that clear?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

When\r\nJesus said,\u00a0<\/span>\u201cBlessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy,\u201d<\/span>\u00a0He spoke\r\ndirectly to the fact that His mercy is always tempered by His vision and\r\nknowledge of the final result. What He was saying is,\u00a0<\/span>\u201cIf you live and walk in My Mercy and Compassion, you will\r\nbe the recipient and arbitrator of My Mercy and Compassion<\/span>\u00a0in your sphere of influence<\/span>.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Get\r\nit? If we can shift into operating in the mercy of God and set aside our human\r\nthoughts and emotional compassion, we become not only the recipients of God's\r\nmercy in our lives, but also the arbitrators of it! That's supernatural.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

OK?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Need to share a personal story with you as a lead-in to today’s Coffee Break. It was December 5, 1960 that I joined the Army.
