ANOTHER COFFEE BREAK: SUPERNATURAL MATURITY, Part 1<\/h2><\/div><\/div><\/div>

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

During the past few months, I've been sharing in our local\r\nfellowship a revelation from what we commonly refer to as\u00a0The Sermon on\r\nthe Mount<\/i>. As I was reading Matthew 5, 6 & 7, I suddenly realized that\r\nJesus was sharing with the folks a whole lot of character pictures which\r\nepitomize the very nature of His being, makeup and personality.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Before\r\nwe dig into Jesus' teaching, let's consider the context of the things Jesus is\r\nsharing in this \"sermon.\" In Matthew 3, we have the revelation of\r\nJesus' baptism and Father making abundantly clear to those who were watching\r\nthat, \"This is My Beloved Son in Whom I am well pleased!\" It was a\r\nremarkable statement for Father to make of Jesus, but it was one that was\r\ncommon to Jewish society.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Whenever\r\na son reached a point in his life where he was both learned and practiced in\r\nhis father's business, and sufficiently seasoned at it that his father could\r\nliterally turn the entire operation of the business over to him, the father\r\nwould call together his friends, family and business associates for a public\r\nceremony in which he would announce officially that \"this is my beloved\r\nson in whom I am well pleased.\" At that time the father would also provide\r\nthe son with a signet ring with which he could set the father's seal to any\r\nofficial document, acting in the stead of the father with the father's full\r\nbacking and approval.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

By\r\nthis time, the son had observed all that the father would do in the course of\r\nfifteen to twenty years of working with him (that period of being \"under\r\ntutors and governors until the time appointed of the father\") after his\r\n\"bar mitzvah\" at age 12, he had learned to say what his father would\r\nsay in virtually every situation. The son, therefore, became the father's\r\nrepresentative and alter-ego wherever he went, and whatever he said or did was\r\ndone in the place of his father as though his father was actually there.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Thus,\r\nwhen Jesus was given this magnificent public approval by Father, Father also\r\nsent His signet ring in the form of Holy Spirit, Who settled on Jesus in the\r\nform of a dove. It couldn't have been clearer<\/span> to all\r\nwho witnessed the event.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Consider\r\nthe following scriptures within the context of these two pictures; namely, that\r\nof the learning under tutors and governors to do and to say all that the father\r\nsaid and did, and finally, the giving of the signet ring to seal everything\r\ndone in the father's name.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

John 8:26, 28-29<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0<\/span>I have\r\nmany things to say and to judge of you: but he that sent me is true; and\u00a0I\r\nspeak to the world those things which I have heard of him<\/u>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of\r\nman, then shall ye know that I am\u00a0he<\/i>, and\u00a0that<\/i>\u00a0I\r\ndo nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things<\/u>.\r\nAnd he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone;\u00a0for\r\nI do always those things that please him<\/u>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

John 10:30<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0<\/span>I\r\nand\u00a0my<\/i>\u00a0Father are one.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

John 14:10<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0<\/span>Believest<\/span><\/span> thou not that I am in\r\nthe Father, and the Father in me?\u00a0the words that I speak unto you I\r\nspeak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth<\/span> in\r\nme, he doeth the works.<\/u><\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

When\r\nJesus, therefore, made the statement that He and Father are One, He wasn't\r\nsaying that they were the same person, He was following the protocol that\r\nmandates His acting in Father's stead, saying exactly what Father would say,\r\nand doing the works that Father would do were he present in person.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Now,\r\ntake a look at the picture of the signet ring.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

John 6:27<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0<\/span>Labour<\/span><\/span> not for the meat which perisheth<\/span>, but for that meat which endureth<\/span>\r\nunto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath\r\nGod the Father sealed.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\nKJV uses the word \"sealed\", and that's a poor tr<\/span>anslation. I won't\r\n take the time to re-translate that whole verse to you, but the Greek word which\r\n is often translated \"sealed\" or perhaps \"signet\" is the\r\n word,\u00a0sphragizo<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>.\r\n Here's how J.H. Thayer translates this word:\u00a0<\/span>to set a mark upon by the impress of a seal or\r\n a stamp<\/span><\/i><\/b>. The word literally describes a\r\n signet ring or an official seal that a king would use to authenticate a\r\n document or a decree. With that in mind, consider now how Paul uses this\r\n word,\u00a0sphragizo<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>.<\/span>\r\n <\/o:p>\r\n <\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

I\r\n Corinthians 1:21-22<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0<\/span>Now he which stablisheth<\/span> us with you\r\n in Christ, and hath anointed us,\u00a0is<\/i>\u00a0God; Who hath also sealed\r\n us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Ephesians 1:13-14<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0<\/span>In whom\r\nye also\u00a0trusted<\/i>, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel\r\nof your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with\r\nthat holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the\r\nredemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Ephesians 4:30<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0<\/span>And\r\ngrieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of\r\nredemption.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Have\r\nI drawn this picture sufficiently for you? My objective is to lay the\r\ngroundwork for understanding that when Jesus began to teach the multitudes, the\r\nthings He was sharing were inherent to His character, makeup, and personality.\r\nAnd Jesus was sharing -- and this is important in our understanding -- exactly\r\nwhat Father had said to Him, and what Father was saying to us! He was sharing\r\nthose things that will cause us to become naturally supernatural -- naturally\r\nspiritual, as measured by the fact that a signet ring has been impressed into\r\nour minds, our thoughts and our behavior.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

When\r\nI use the term, naturally supernatural, I am referring to the fact that we are\r\nno longer part of this world, this world's kingdoms, this world's mindset or\r\nthis world's behavior. What the world considers as \"natural\" is, in\r\nfact, sub-natural. It is not normal in any way shape or form to the way we were\r\ndesigned by God in the first place. Thus, when we are in Christ Jesus, and He\r\nis in us, He has placed His \"super\" upon what we have known and lived\r\nin as \"natural.\"<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

OK?\r\nSorry if I've dragged this out or been too exhaustive in my explanation, but it\r\nis necessary for all of us to have the proper context for what Jesus began to\r\nshare when He opened up to the multitudes. That said, let's begin with the very\r\nfirst statement that Jesus made when He began to share what we commonly refer\r\nto as \"The Beatitudes.\"<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Matthew 5:3<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of\r\nHeaven.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

If\r\never there was a verse of Scripture that has been taken out of context, this is\r\nit! Folks with a poverty mindset have abused this for generations, focusing on\r\nthe first four words, \u201cBlessed are the poor,\u201d and stopping there.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\nword, poor, if taken alone in this verse certainly could be taken that way. The\r\nGreek word,\u00a0ptochos<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>,\r\nliterally translates to:\u00a0<\/span>destitute of wealth, influence, position or honor<\/span><\/i><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0But that\u2019s NOT\r\nwhat Jesus said. He didn\u2019t say that it was blessed to be poor; He said,\u00a0<\/span>\u201cBlessed are the poor in spirit.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\napostle Paul fully understood what Jesus meant when He made that statement and\r\nhe put it in its proper context for us when he wrote to the Ekklesia<\/span>\r\nin Philippi.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Philippians 2:5-8<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0<\/span>Let\r\nthis mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of\r\nGod, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:But<\/span>\r\nmade himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was\r\nmade in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled\r\nhimself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

We\u2019ll\r\ncome back to Paul\u2019s statement shortly.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u201cPoor\r\nin spirit\u201d is defined by J.H. Thayer in his Greek-English Lexicon like this:\u00a0<\/span>destitute of the wealth of learning and\r\nintellectual culture which [academic] schools afford.<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>Understand?\r\nOK, let\u2019s put it in simpler language. Watch what happens when we fully\r\ntranslate Matthew 5:3 from the Greek.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Matthew 5:3<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0<\/span>\u201cBlessed\r\nand highly favored by God are those who don\u2019t eat of the Tree of the Knowledge\r\nof Good and Evil and live their lives on the basis of intellectual learning and\r\nculture \u2014 those whose spirits are fed from the Tree of Life; for theirs is the\r\nKingdom of Heaven \u2014 that dimension of the Spirit where the rulership<\/span>\r\nof God enables us to function as Jesus did.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>(RAC Translation\r\n& Amplification)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Consider\r\nhow Paul expressed it when writing to the Romans.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Romans 8:5-16<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the\r\nflesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be\r\ncarnally minded\u00a0is<\/i>\u00a0death; but to be spiritually minded\u00a0is<\/i>\u00a0life\r\nand peace.\u00a0Because the carnal mind\u00a0is<\/i>\u00a0enmity against God:\r\nfor it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.\u00a0But\r\nye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God\r\ndwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

And if Christ\u00a0be<\/i>\u00a0in you, the body\u00a0is<\/i>\u00a0dead\r\nbecause of sin; but the Spirit\u00a0is<\/i>\u00a0life because of\r\nrighteousness.\u00a0But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead\r\ndwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your\r\nmortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth<\/span> in\r\nyou.\u00a0Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after\r\nthe flesh.\u00a0For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through\r\nthe Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons\r\nof God.\u00a0For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but\r\nye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.\u00a0The\r\nSpirit itself beareth<\/span> witness with our spirit, that\r\nwe are the children of God:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

It\r\nwould take up too much space in this Coffee Break to amplify this whole\r\npassage, so let me deal with just a few segments.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Romans\r\n8:5-8<\/span><\/u>:\u00a0<\/span>\u201cFor those who live their lives based on what is a \u201creasonable\u201d\r\nor \u201crational\u201d mode of thinking and living behave according to their five\r\nsenses, feelings and perceptions; but those who live their lives responding to\r\nthe quickening of Holy Spirit live spiritually, opposing the dictates of the\r\nflesh.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u201cThis is because thinking which follows that which seems\r\nreasonable and rational (according to feelings, emotions and human learning) is\r\nat war with God, is not subject to the Law of the Spirit of Life in Christ\r\nJesus \u2014 and, indeed, it cannot be.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>(RAC Translation and Amplification)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Romans 8:13-16<\/span><\/u>:\u00a0<\/span>\u201cFor if you live\r\naccording to the demands of your flesh, your rational and reasonable thinking,\r\nyou will die; but if you access the Spirit of life \u2014 that Spirit of God \u2014 that\r\nis within you and shut down and put to death the normal desires and acts of\r\nyour flesh, you will [truly] live.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u201cFor all those who allow themselves to be led and quickened by\r\nthe Spirit of God will become \u2014 and be \u2014 the full-grown, mature sons of God.\r\nAnd that\u2019s because you have not received in yourself slavery to spirits of\r\nfear; but rather that deep knowing within that you\u2019ve been adopted into the\r\nFamily of God so that your natural \u2014 spiritual \u2014 reaction [when in crisis] is\r\nto cry out, \u201cDaddy! Papa! Father! You see] Holy Spirit witnesses within our\r\nspirits that we have become children -- members of the Family of God!\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>(RAC\u00a0<\/span>Translation &\r\nAmplification)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Was\r\nthat clear? THAT\u2019s what it means to be \u201cpoor in spirit!\u201d Now take another look\r\nat the way Paul described Jesus\u2019 mindset as he wrote to the Philippian<\/span>\r\nEkklesia<\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

He\r\nsaid,\u00a0<\/span>\u201cLet this manner of thinking be in you!\u201d<\/span>\u00a0Then he\r\ndescribes the kind of \u201cpoor [in] spirit\u201d that ruled Jesus.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

As\r\nthe only begotten Son of God, Jesus knew with a certainty that He was in the\r\nform, likeness, nature and makeup of God; that as such He paralleled God in\r\nevery respect \u2014 even in his human form \u2014 and yet he subdued His flesh and human\r\ncravings and desires in order to adopt the nature and character of a bond\r\nservant, becoming instead a normal man by all appearances and actions.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Now,\r\nthink about the second half of Jesus\u2019 statement,\u00a0<\/span>\u201cFor theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

A\r\nkingdom, obviously, is the domain where a king rules \u2014 whose word is Law! When\r\nwe talk about Heaven, we mostly think in ethereal terms of a place we will go\r\nto \u201cin the sweet bye and bye,\u201d when in fact there is nothing ethereal about\r\nHeaven. Heaven is simply a parallel dimension.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

I\r\nrealize that sounds a bit like some sci-fi story, but the truth is that Heaven\r\nliterally parallels this time-space earth that we spend the majority of our\r\ntime living in and with.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

We\r\nwere first designed as spiritual beings, and in fact pre-existed in Heaven with\r\nGod before we ever came here. (I know that some folks really get a bee in\r\ntheir bonnet when I say that, but there are a fistful of scriptures to back it\r\nup. See, for example, Job 40:15, or Jeremiah 1:5<\/i>) That said, Heaven is a\r\ntangible, multi-dimensional place which has authority and power over this\r\ntime-space world in which we live. Heaven existed before there was ever an\r\nEarth or a Universe, and Heaven will still exist when this earth is dissolved\r\nand a new earth and a new \u201cheavens\u201d are created.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

When\r\nJesus said, therefore, that\u00a0<\/span>\u201ctheirs is the Kingdom of\r\nHeaven,\u201d\u00a0<\/span>He\r\nwas making it very clear that those who willingly set aside their rational,\r\nreasoning, human thought processes and become \u201cpoor in spirit\u201d \u2014 not exalting\r\ntheir spirits, their minds and their own purposes above God\u2019s plan and destiny\r\nfor us \u2014 will be enabled to live a Kingdom life with ready access to the\r\nHeavenly realm.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

OK.\r\nThat was a mouthful. Let me put it more simply.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

When\r\nGod\u2019s rulership<\/span> in our lives becomes paramount and\r\npreeminent in our priorities, we have access to that Kingdom He has prepared\r\nfor us. So long as we continue to walk and live the Kingdom life, a process of\r\nthe rulership<\/span> of the Lord takes over us, and begins\r\nto function through us.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Let\r\nme stop here, and we will pick this up again next week.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n
