ANOTHER COFFEE BREAK: SUPERNATURAL MATURITY, Part 7<\/h2><\/div><\/div><\/div>

In the next couple of Coffee Breaks, as we continue with the\r\ntruths of Jesus' character expressed in the Sermon on the Mount, I'd like to\r\ndeal with something that some folks may consider as controversial and even\r\nheretical -- and that is the ability we have IN CHRIST to literally change the\r\nchaos and strife around us by the same simple declaration that Jesus used.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

We are prone, even as Christians, to argue and even bring\r\ndivision among folks rather than exercise this part of the nature of the Lord\r\nJesus Christ. The world often sees this more in a political realm than as a\r\nspiritual characteristic. The problem is that it more often than not becomes an\r\neffort to generate compromise -- sometimes at any price -- when the truth is\r\nthat true peace is a natural byproduct of the presence of the Lord, and His\r\nSpirit being permitted to rule in and over the circumstances.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Let me show you what I mean. Consider Jesus' declaration:<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Matthew 5:9<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the\r\nchildren of God.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Here\r\nagain is a verse that we need to amplify in the same way that we have looked at\r\nsome of the previous verses.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u201cBlessed and highly favored by the King [of Kings] are those who\r\nknow what it means to have the peace of God \u2014 those who pursue with all\r\ndiligence that peace in their being and in their environment \u2014 for God will\r\ncause them to be known and referred to as His mature and responsible sons (to\r\nwhom He has entrusted His business.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>(RAC Translation and\r\nAmplification)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

We\u2019ll\r\ncome back to this verse in a bit, but I\u2019d like to demonstrate exactly what I\r\nbelieve Jesus is talking about by sharing an event that took place with my\r\nfather in the summer of 1956. Let me first say that to be a \u201cpeace-maker\u201d\r\nwithin the context of Jesus\u2019 statement, we become an \u201cenforcer\u201d in a manner of\r\nspeaking. By that I mean that we bring and enact the peace of God where the\r\nEnemy has disrupted things and brought confusion and discontent and conflict.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

We\r\nwere living in Barrow, Alaska at the time, and construction of the new church\r\nbuilding there was proceeding in stages.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\nchurch had been built in close proximity to a couple of Eskimo homes \u2014 one of\r\nwhich was occupied by a widowed woman named Susan (I\u2019ll omit last names in this\r\ninstance) who had two daughters, Mary Ann and Margaret. Susan had taken up with\r\nSimeon, and he was an alcoholic of the worst order. One morning, Mary Ann (who\r\nwas probably about 12 years old at the time) came running over to our place and\r\npounded on the door. Dad answered and Mary Ann screamed, \u201cSimeon\u2019s trying to\r\nkill my mom!\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Wasting\r\nno time, Dad ran across the alley to the house and opened the door in time to\r\nsee Simeon, in a drunken rage, raising an axe over the head of Susan to take\r\nher head off. Immediately, he raised his right hand in the air and spoke one\r\nsingle word, \u201cPeace!\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Simeon\u2019s\r\nface and entire demeanor went through an instant change. He dropped the axe and\r\nfell to his knees, crying. A very battered Susan had been cowering on the\r\nfloor, and she got to her feet and moved over to the nearby bed to sit down.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Within\r\nmoments, Simeon had sobered up. A miracle had taken place as Dad led him to\r\nJesus Christ.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

It\r\nbegan a process that would emerge in the coming days and weeks as the entire\r\nfamily accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Mary Ann wound up spending\r\nmore and more time in our home as Mom ministered to her, and she ultimately\r\nbecame our unofficially adopted \u201csister\u201d \u2014 her sister, Margaret, as well,\r\nalthough perhaps to a lesser degree.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Simeon\r\nwas no mean musician and over the months that followed became a favorite banjo\r\npicker who joined my brother and I, and a couple other Eskimo brothers in a\r\nstring praise band for our Sunday (and mid-week) services.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

It\r\nwas a classic example of the rulership of God\u2019s peace. The KJV uses the term,\r\n\u201cpeace-maker\u201d as a translation of the Greek word,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>eirenopoios<\/span><\/i><\/b>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>which\r\nis a conjunction of two words,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>eirene<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>(to join together, to set at\r\none again<\/span><\/u>),<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0poieo<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>(to make, to execute, to\r\nperform, to ordain, to cause<\/span><\/u>).<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Several\r\nyears ago, I put a couple of verses from Colossians 3:15-16 to music, like\r\nthis:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

In all wisdom;<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Teaching and admonishing one another<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

In Psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord -<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>

<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>
<\/span><\/div><\/div>
<\/div>\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n

<\/span><\/o:p><\/span>And Let the peace of God rule in your hearts<\/span>\n <\/o:p>\n<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Let the Word of Christ dwell in you!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And let the Peace of God rule in your hearts<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Rule in your hearts<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Rule in your hearts<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

To the which also ye are called<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In One Body<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And be ye thankful!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(Repeat Verse 16)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

The\nword in the Greek text translated, \u201crule,\u201d is the word,<\/span> <\/span>brabeuo<\/span><\/i><\/b>.<\/span> <\/span>This word literally means:<\/span> <\/span>to\ndirect, to control, to decide, to determine, to rule.<\/span><\/u><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

This\nis not a passive word by any means. It is active and it perfectly describes\njust how we are expected to operate with the peace of God. The last two\ndescriptive meanings spell it out as clearly as anything can be. This is\nrulership over chaos. It is the manifestation of His presence in the midst of\nconflict.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

God\u2019s\npeace is NOT an absence of conflict but a serenity of spirit that literally\novertakes and overcomes the violence and confusion, the sin and iniquity and\ndarkness that pervades the earth and our societies at large. Neither is God's\npeace an absence of war. God's peace is a declaration of war -- AND VICTORY --\nover spiritual forces in opposition to His presence.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Have\nyou ever considered how Paul begins virtually every single letter or epistle he\nwrites in the New Testament? Here\u2019s how he begins his first letter to the\nEkklesia in Corinth:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

I\nCorinthians 1:3<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span> <\/span>Grace be<\/i> unto you, and peace, from God our\nFather, and from<\/i> the Lord Jesus Christ.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Do\nyou see it? The peace of God is the same peace we have in Christ Jesus. It\u2019s\nthat same peace that literally superintends our environment when we are in\nChrist, and He is in us!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

And\nhere, again, we have the same root word in Greek that we find in Matthew 5:9,\nwhich is<\/span> <\/span>eirene<\/span><\/i><\/b> <\/span>(to join together, to set at\none again<\/span><\/u>).<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Understand?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

In\nthe same way that the word, brabeuo, denotes action or force or control, the\nword, eirene, also denotes action \u2014 rulership over a negative situation. God\u2019s\npeace sets things right. It brings order in the midst of chaos, and that\napplies in more than just mental, emotional, physical or spiritual situations.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

I\u2019ll\nshare with you another story in next week's Coffee Break from my father\u2019s\nexperiences that has been with me since my very early childhood, but let me\nfirst lay a foundation for that story and show you a couple demonstrations from\nJesus\u2019 life.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Mark\n4:35-41<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span> <\/span>And the same day, when the even was come, he saith unto them,\nLet us pass over unto the other side. And when they had sent away the\nmultitude, they took him even as he was in the ship. And there were also with\nhim other little ships.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into\nthe ship, so that it was now full. And he was in the hinder part of the\nship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest\nthou not that we perish?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace,\nbe still<\/u>. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. And he said unto\nthem, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What\nmanner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Are\nyou seeing this picture? When we talk about the peace of God that passes all\nunderstanding, we are talking about a spiritual force which easily overrules\nthe elements, wind, rain, snow, hurricanes, tornadoes, blizzards -- you name\nit. I can't tell you how many times Della and I have commanded storms to either\ncease, stop in place, or steer another direction, and see the immediate\nmanifestation. That's a different story that I'll get to another time.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Then\nwe see and consider the time when Jesus gathered His disciples together and\nsent them forth to minister and extend the domain of the Kingdom of God in His\nauthority and power. This is peacemaking with some of its most visible and\ndemonstrable manifestations.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Matthew\n19:7-15<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span> <\/span>And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand.\nHeal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye\nhave received, freely give.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Provide neither gold, nor silver, nor brass in your\npurses, Nor scrip for your<\/i> journey, neither two coats,\nneither shoes, nor yet staves: for the workman is worthy of his meat.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

And into whatsoever city or town ye shall enter, inquire who in\nit is worthy; and there abide till ye go thence. And when ye come into an\nhouse, salute it.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it: but if\nit be not worthy, let your peace return to you. And whosoever shall not\nreceive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city,\nshake off the dust of your feet.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land\nof Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

The\nillustration that comes from Jesus\u2019 teaching is that when we go forth in His\nKingdom authority, we have command of environments; we have command over\nspirits of confusion and contention. We have command over demonic spirits of\nevery characteristic and nature. We have command over sickness, infirmity,\ndisease and physical manifestations of weakness. Even more, we have command of\ndeath with the ability to raise people from the dead and restore life to them.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

I\nmust say, however, that there is a catch to this. This ability to command takes\nplace when we are in Christ, and He is in us.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

In\nthis picture that Jesus describes, He declares that when we speak peace in a\nsituation where the household is<\/span> <\/span>anaxios<\/span><\/i><\/b> <\/span>(the same word that\nappears in Paul\u2019s description of our partaking of the Table of the Lord) \u2014\ntreating the presence of the Lord as \u201ccommonplace\u201d (unworthy, KJV), that peace\ncomes back to us, and judgment falls upon that place, not unlike that which\nhappened to Sodom and Gomorrah.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

That's\nwhere we will take things next week.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n
