\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n

During the past seventy-plus years, I\u2019ve heard everything from\r\ngood old country gospel music to classical music referred to as \u201cWorship.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>Huhh Uhh!\u00a0 <\/span>Nope!\u00a0\r\n<\/span>It doesn\u2019t work like that!\u00a0 <\/span>That\r\ndoesn\u2019t mean that one can\u2019t worship with country-style music, nor does it mean\r\nthat one can\u2019t worship with certain classical music.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>We\u2019ve experienced real worship in the midst\r\nof what I would call jazz.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n

There is so much that gets referred to as praise and worship\r\nthat, for the average person who doesn\u2019t flow in this realm, it can get really\r\nconfusing.\u00a0 <\/span>People go to a church service\r\nand call singing songs, listening to testimonies, taking up the offering, and\r\nlistening to the preacher teach, \u201cWorship.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Baloney!<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n

That doesn\u2019t mean a person can\u2019t worship in the midst of all\r\nthat noise, but to call that worship is to disparage everything that David\r\nspent his life on.\u00a0 <\/span>It mocks the\r\nTabernacle of David.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

David\r\nhad experienced years of that sound and that synchronous relationship with the\r\nheart of the Lord as he offered up praise and worship on the hillsides tending\r\nhis father\u2019s sheep.\u00a0 <\/span>He had been bred for\r\nthis time in the life of Israel.\u00a0 <\/span>He had\r\na heart after the Lord \u2014 and that meant that he knew what it would take to\r\nbring Israel back to its proper place of relationship with God.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\nTabernacle that he set up was simple and uncomplicated: a plain old tent,\r\nhousing the Ark of the Covenant with the flaps open so that Israel could see\r\nthe Ark as that 24-hour praise and worship went forth.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

As\r\nAsaph, Heman and Jeduthun began their ministry under the leadership and\r\nmentoring of David, a synchronous vibration began to go forth over Israel.\u00a0 <\/span>It was a sound that was synchronized with the\r\nheart of the Lord.\u00a0 <\/span>It was His sound!\u00a0 <\/span>And it produced the changes necessary so that\r\nfor the first time in hundreds of years, Israel had preeminence in the land.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\nauthority of the Lord was being manifested in the sound.\u00a0 <\/span>The power of God spread throughout the\r\nland.\u00a0 <\/span>The land began to produce as it\r\nhad never produced before.\u00a0 <\/span>The people\r\nbegan to prosper.\u00a0 <\/span>Poverty began to\r\ndisappear.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

David\r\nbegan to take lands and territories that God had promised to Abraham, but no\r\nleader before him had been able to accomplish.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>The sound and life of compromise with the heathen began to depart.\u00a0 <\/span>The life and vibration of the life of the\r\nLord began to fill the land!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Sad\r\nto say, but God\u2019s people today have lost sight of that.\u00a0 <\/span>Worship is still just the singing of\r\nsongs.\u00a0 <\/span>It has become more entertainment\r\nthan worship.\u00a0 <\/span>Musicians are anxious to\r\nbecome part of so-called \u201cworship teams\u201d because they desire to exploit their\r\nmusical prowess and to be a part of \u201ca sound\u201d \u2014not understanding what that\r\nsound needs to be.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

We\r\nhave would-be worship leaders contending with each other on who gets to lead\r\nthe worship.\u00a0 <\/span>It has become a series of\r\ncompetitions.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

One\r\nof the things that sets a true worship leader apart from the crowd is that he\r\nor she never pushes themselves forward.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Solomon had it right when he wrote the following:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Proverbs 18:16<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0\r\n<\/span><\/span>A man\u2019s gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great\r\nmen.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Because\r\nworship has been the core of my being for my whole life, I have never had to\r\nthrust myself forward as a potential worship leader.\u00a0 <\/span>When people begin to hear and to experience\r\nthe sound \u2014 the synchronous sound \u2014 of the Lord in our worship, they begin to\r\nseek us out.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\nbody of Christ, I believe, is sick of the same old, same old, same old\r\nsound.\u00a0 <\/span>Folks are hungry for the real\r\npresence of the Lord \u2014 that same presence that produces the signs, the wonders,\r\nthe miracles that Jesus did.\u00a0 <\/span>And\r\nconsider this!\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus made the following\r\npromise as part of His Covenant with us:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

John 14:12-14<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0\r\n<\/span><\/span>Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the\r\nworks that I do shall he do also; and greater works<\/i> than these shall he\r\ndo; because I go unto my Father.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the\r\nFather may be glorified in the Son. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/sup>If ye shall ask any\r\nthing in my name, I will do it<\/i>.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Greater\r\nworks?\u00a0 <\/span>Greater works?\u00a0 <\/span>Yeah, right!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Most\r\nChristians, if they get to do any of the works that Jesus did, are more than\r\nsatisfied.\u00a0 <\/span>Not me, folks!\u00a0 <\/span>I have a clear case of \u201csatisfied\r\ndissatisfaction!\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>You know what that is,\r\nright?\u00a0 <\/span>My state of satisfaction with\r\nwhere I am in God is continually dissatisfied.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>I KNOW that I haven\u2019t even scratched the surface on what He wants to\r\naccomplish through me and with me.\u00a0 <\/span>Every\r\ncorpuscle of my being wants to vibrate in sync with Him on a continuous basis\r\nso that everything He wants and needs to take place on earth, and with His\r\npeople, gets done.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Hence,\r\nI worship.\u00a0 <\/span>I play the guitar.\u00a0 <\/span>I play other instruments.\u00a0 <\/span>I seek to play and to sing at the frequency \u2014\r\nthe vibration sound \u2014 that the Lord wants to operate in at the moment.\u00a0 <\/span>This is where we need to be, folks!\u00a0 <\/span>This is where our fellowship needs to\r\nbe.\u00a0 <\/span>This is where our corporate worship\r\nneeds to be.\u00a0 <\/span>We can no longer just sing\r\nthe songs we like to sing because they feel good or sound good.\u00a0 <\/span>We need to sing and to worship precisely what\r\nwe hear the Lord saying.\u00a0 <\/span>Holy Spirit is\r\nfaithful to give us exactly what needs to be played or sang.\u00a0 <\/span>We just need to be sensitive to His prompts\r\nand respond.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/p>\r\n\r\n

I\r\nwant to focus today on the differences in the various types of music \u2014 they are\r\ncertainly evidenced in David\u2019s Psalms \u2014 and the role they play in our responses\r\nto the Lord.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Consider\r\nthe different types that David demonstrates to us.\u00a0 <\/span>How about a prayer that is combined with\r\npraise?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Psalm 3<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>Lord, how are they\r\nincreased that trouble me.\u00a0 <\/span>Many are they\r\nthat rise up against me.\u00a0 <\/span>Many there be\r\nwhich say of my soul, there is no help for him in God.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

But Thou, Oh Lord, art a shield for me; my glory and the lifter\r\nup of mine head.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

What\r\nare we seeing and hearing?\u00a0 <\/span>David begins\r\nwith a prayer \u2014 a cry from his heart.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>But he doesn\u2019t leave it there!\u00a0 <\/span>He\r\npraises and worships God in the midst of his prayer.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\nnext few Psalms are prayers.\u00a0 <\/span>David cries\r\nout to the Lord in the midst of the trials, the persecution from Saul, his\r\nbeing on the run for his life.\u00a0 <\/span>But then\r\nwe come to the Eighth Psalm.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Psalm 8:1<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>O\r\nLORD our Lord, how excellent is<\/i> thy name in all the earth! who hast set\r\nthy glory above the heavens.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Things\r\nhave changed, haven\u2019t they?\u00a0 <\/span>No we are\r\noffering up high praise to the Lord!\u00a0 <\/span>It\r\ncontinues into the 9th Psalm:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Psalm 9:1-2<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>I will praise Thee,\r\nOh Lord, with my whole heart; I will show forth all Thy marvelous works;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

I will be glad and rejoice in Thee; I will sing praise to Thy\r\nname, Oh Most High!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

(This,\r\nby the way, was the very first Psalm I set to music back in the early\r\n1970\u2019s.\u00a0 <\/span>I introduced it for the first\r\ntime at Fred Price\u2019s fellowship in Los Angeles.)<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

We\r\nhave a real shift when we come to Psalm 22.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Now David begins to prophesy.\u00a0 <\/span>He\r\ndescribes in great detail exactly what Jesus went through as He hung on the\r\nCross.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Psalm 22:1<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>My\r\nGod, My God!\u00a0 <\/span>Why hast thou forsaken\r\nme?\u00a0 <\/span>Why art Thou so far from helping me,\r\nand from the words of my roaring?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Psalm\r\n22:14-18<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\r\n<\/span>I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint:\r\nmy heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth<\/span> to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust\r\nof death.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have\r\nenclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

I may tell all my bones: they look and<\/i> stare upon me.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

And\r\nthat brings us to a unique Psalm, Psalm 23.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Now we have a song that is at once a Testimony, Instruction, and\r\nProphecy.\u00a0 <\/span>Thus David establishes the\r\nfact that there are songs of Testimony, songs which testify of the specific\r\ngoodness of the Lord in our life and speak of the things that He has done for\r\nus.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

At\r\nthe same time, he provides instruction for those who will hear and follow the\r\npattern he lays out in this Psalm.\u00a0 <\/span>He\r\nwraps up the Psalm with a prophecy of what will follow as a result.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Let\u2019s\r\nskip forward to Psalm 33.\u00a0 <\/span>Now we have a\r\nPsalm of rejoicing and praise.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Psalm 33:1-4<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>Rejoice\r\nin the LORD, O ye righteous: for<\/i> praise is comely for the upright.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Praise the LORD with\r\nharp: sing unto him with the psaltery and<\/i> an instrument of ten strings.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Sing unto him a new\r\nsong; play skilfully<\/span> with a loud noise.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

For the word of the\r\nLORD is<\/i> right; and all his works are done<\/i> in truth.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Remember\r\nour discussion last week?\u00a0 <\/span>Remember the\r\nuse of the two words, <\/span>chayel <\/span><\/i><\/b>and <\/span>zamar<\/span><\/i><\/b>?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Chayel<\/span><\/i><\/b> is the sound, the vibration (think of a tuning fork)\r\nthat goes forth as one offers praise.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Zamar, <\/span><\/i><\/b>on the other hand, is the vibration created when one\r\nplucks the strings of an instrument, like a harp, a guitar, or a myriad of\r\nother plucked string instruments.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\ntwo of these words, strung together in numerous Psalms, describe exactly what\r\nDavid experienced as he ministered to the Lord with his instruments in praise\r\nand worship.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

David\r\nhad the sounds of testimony, the sounds of instruction, the sounds of prophecy,\r\nthe sounds of praise, high praise, the sounds of prayer and the sounds of\r\nworship.\u00a0 <\/span>More than that, he had the\r\nsounds of Throne worship.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

We\r\ntalk about praise and we talk about high praise.\u00a0 <\/span>Let me illustrate.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

The\r\nnormal Hebrew word for praise is, <\/span>halal<\/span><\/i><\/b>. Depending on how\r\nthis word is used, it can represent many things.\u00a0 <\/span>Context plays an important role, and the\r\nbreathing marks used with the word tell us a whole lot.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Dr.\r\nWilliam Gesenius, in his Hebrew-Chaldee Lexicon tells us that <\/span>halal <\/span><\/i><\/b>can represent the\r\nfollowing:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

1.<\/span>\u00a0To shine (often\r\nused figuratively of God\u2019s favor)<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

2.<\/span>\u00a0To flash forth\r\nlight<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

3.<\/span>\u00a0To praise, to\r\nboast, be boastful<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

4.<\/span>\u00a0To make a boast<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

5.<\/span>\u00a0To be made\r\npraiseworthy, to be commended, to be worthy of praise<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

6.<\/span>\u00a0To Glory, to\r\nglorify<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

7.<\/span>\u00a0To make a fool of,\r\nto make into a fool<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

8.<\/span>\u00a0To act madly, act\r\nlike a madman<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

We see this last\r\nillustration in Psalm 34 when David is in the court of the Philistine king,\r\nAbimelech, and Abimelech\u2019s advisors begin to talk about David\u2019s exploits and\r\nhow he was the one of whom the Israelite women sang, \u201cDavid hast slain his ten\r\nthousands.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Psalm 34:1-4<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>I\r\nwill bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

My\r\nsoul shall make her boast in the Lord; the humble shall here thereof and be\r\nglad.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

O\r\nmagnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

I\r\nsought the Lord, and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears<\/span>.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

We are told that as\r\nDavid sang this Psalm, he played the madman.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>He sang and danced with all his might.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>He rapped out a rhythm with his hands on the doors of the city gate.\u00a0 <\/span>He sang so vociferously that spit came\r\nslinging out of his mouth.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

His\r\nactions and praise and dancing scared the Philistine soldiers, along with\r\nAbimelech.\u00a0 <\/span>They thought David had lost\r\nhis mind.\u00a0 <\/span>They didn\u2019t know what to do\r\nwith someone who had gone insane, so they opened the doors of the city and\r\nkicked him out.\u00a0 <\/span>They were afraid his\r\ninsanity would come off on them!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

It\r\nis a bit humorous, but I sometimes think the religious community reacts the\r\nsame way to the kind of real praise and worship that the Lord is looking\r\nfor.\u00a0 <\/span>Sometimes it is vociferous,\r\nsometimes it is really \u201cdifferent\u201d and sometimes it produces results that are\r\nunexpected.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n
