Part 3:\u00a0 WHERE THE SOUND OF OPPOSITION BEGAN<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Greetings, Salutations, Solutions, Felicitations, etc., etc.,\r\netc., ad infinitum!<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

That ought to fire up your juices today!<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Oh, and it is\r\nvery, very dark-roasted Colombian in both the French Press and the\u00a0<\/span>Expresso<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Machine\r\ntoday.\u00a0 Come on by and have a cup with me.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

This\r\ndiscussion has obviously stirred some folks -- so far not too many negatively,\r\nit appears -- and for people whose lives revolve around sound, whether it be\r\npraise, worship, intercession, teaching, preaching, or just sharing, this is an\r\nextremely important area of revelation and understanding.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

We've been\r\nusing this translation (mine) from the Greek text of II Corinthians 10:3-5 in\r\neach of the past two Coffee Breaks and I want to start there again today.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\"For the weapons and instruments of our war and executed\r\nactions [against Satan] do not have their origins and [weak, impotent]\r\noperation in natural flesh and human abilities, but they are skillful, potent\r\nand powerful \u2013 like dynamite \u2013 through God to the demolition and extinction of\r\nall fortified and guarded places of opinions in opposition,\"<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\"Bringing\r\ndown violently and demolishing (to total extinction) all mental\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/span>reasonings<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>\u00a0and\r\nthought processes, and every mental barrier or arrogant and self-elevated\r\nattitude that justifies itself in opposition to the knowledge of God; bringing\r\ninto captivity and making a prisoner every perception of the intellect and\r\nevery mental purpose or determination to the compliance and submission of\r\nChrist and His anointing.\"<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Let's also\r\nreview Paul's statements in his letter to Ephesus.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\"For\u00a0we wrestle not<\/u>\u00a0against flesh and\r\nblood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the\r\ndarkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.\"<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

In order to\r\nget to the root of why Paul expresses himself like this, and why he uses a\r\nmusical term (<\/span>esti<\/span><\/i><\/span>-pale<\/span><\/i>\u00a0(from\r\nits root,\u00a0<\/span>pallo<\/span><\/i><\/span>:\u00a0<\/span>to vibrate<\/span><\/u>)<\/span>\u00a0in\r\nEphesians 6 in talking about \"wrestling\" we need to go back to\r\nEzekiel's prophecy (chapter 28:12-16) where he takes up God's judgment against\r\nwhat he refers to as \"the king of\u00a0<\/span>Tyre<\/span><\/span>.\"<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

As Ezekiel\r\ncommences his prophetic discourse it becomes very obvious that he isn't\r\nreferring to the literal king of\u00a0<\/span>Tyre<\/span><\/span>\u00a0but rather Lucifer.\u00a0 Pay attention to the\r\nwording and the phraseology chosen here.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\"Thus\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>saith<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>\u00a0the Lord GOD; Thou\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>sealest<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>\u00a0up the\r\nsum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty.\u00a0 Thou hast been in Eden the\r\ngarden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>sardius<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>, topaz, and\r\nthe diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald,\r\nand the carbuncle, and gold:\u00a0the workmanship of thy\u00a0<\/u><\/span><\/i><\/b>tabrets<\/span><\/u><\/i><\/b><\/span>\u00a0and of\r\nthy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou\u00a0<\/span><\/u><\/i><\/b>wast<\/span><\/u><\/i><\/b><\/span>\u00a0created<\/span><\/u><\/i><\/b>.\"\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0This\r\nterminology is highly significant as you will see.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\"Thou art the anointed cherub that\u00a0<\/u><\/span><\/i><\/b>covereth<\/span><\/u><\/i><\/b><\/span>; and I have\r\nset thee so: thou\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>wast<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>\u00a0upon the holy mountain of\r\nGod; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.\u00a0\r\nThou\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>wast<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>\u00a0perfect\r\nin thy ways from the day that thou\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>wast<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>\u00a0created, till iniquity was\r\nfound in thee.<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\"By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the\r\nmidst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee\r\nas profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee,\u00a0O\r\ncovering cherub<\/u>, from the midst of the stones of fire.\"<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Now let's lay\r\nsome foundations and then take a look at some of these words and phrases in the\r\noriginal Hebrew text.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

1.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0 First Ezekiel describes him as \"sealing up\"\r\n(the Hebrew word for this is:\u00a0<\/span>chatham<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/span>:\u00a0<\/span>to make an end,\r\nto be the ultimate in perfection<\/span><\/u>) the sum, being full of wisdom\r\nand perfect (<\/span>kaliyl<\/span><\/i><\/span>:\u00a0<\/span>entirely\r\nconsumed, the finished product to exacting specification<\/span><\/u>) in beauty.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

2.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0 Then he notes that he was in the Garden of Eden with the\r\nLord God.\u00a0 This fits well when you realize that the Garden of Eden was a\r\ncopy of what exists in Heaven.\u00a0 Adam and Eve were originally instructed to\r\n\"be fruitful, and multiply and fill the earth.\"\u00a0 Genesis 2:15\r\ntells us that they were commanded to \"dress\" the Garden (the Hebrew\r\nword is\u00a0<\/span>'<\/span><\/i>abad<\/span><\/i><\/span>:\r\nmeaning:\u00a0<\/span>to work it like an artisan [who creates a thing of beauty] and\r\ncause it to serve you by growth and multiplication<\/span><\/u>) and\r\n\"keep it\" (<\/span>shamar<\/span><\/i><\/span>:\r\nmeaning:\u00a0<\/span>to hedge it about, to preserve and protect, to ensure its future<\/span><\/u>\u00a0[so it\r\nis able to produce]).<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

3.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0 Next he draws this phenomenal picture of Lucifer's\r\ndazzling appearance showing him as being covered with nine precious stones and\r\narrayed in gold.\u00a0 No wonder Isaiah refers to him as \"Son of the\r\nMorning\" for brightness!\u00a0 (See Isaiah 14:12)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

4.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0 But now we begin to get down to the\u00a0<\/span>nitty<\/span><\/span>\u00a0gritty.\u00a0\r\nNow Ezekiel says that\u00a0<\/span>\"the workmanship<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0(the Hebrew\r\nword here is:\u00a0<\/span>m<\/span><\/i>e<\/span><\/i>la'kah<\/span><\/i><\/span>: better\r\ntranslated:\u00a0<\/span>employment, ministry, that for which one is deputized<\/span><\/u>)\u00a0<\/span>of thy\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>tabrets<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>(<\/span>ta.phaph<\/span><\/i><\/span>:\u00a0<\/span>tambourines,\u00a0<\/span><\/u>timbrels<\/span><\/u><\/span>, percussion\r\ndrums, percussion<\/span><\/u>)\u00a0<\/span>and of thy pipes<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0(<\/span>neqeb<\/span><\/i><\/span>: this word\r\nhas a double meaning and can be used to describe both\u00a0<\/span>a socket or\r\nsetting for gemstones<\/span><\/u>, and\/or something which has been bored through, such as\u00a0<\/span>a flute, piccolo\r\nand the entire family of wind-instruments<\/span><\/u>)\u00a0<\/span>was prepared\r\nin thee in the day that thou\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>wast<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>\u00a0created.\"<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

In case you\r\nhaven't quite grasped the picture yet, Lucifer was created specifically as the\r\nultimate in beauty and music.\u00a0 But the picture becomes even more clear<\/span> in Ezekiel's next phrase.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

5.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0 Twice Ezekiel refers to Lucifer as \"the anointed\r\ncherub that\u00a0<\/span>covereth<\/span><\/span>.\"\u00a0\r\nThree Hebrew words in this phrase draw a picture that our English language\r\nfails to capture in direct translation.\u00a0 (a) The first is:\u00a0<\/span>mimshach<\/span><\/i><\/span>: which is\r\nderived from\u00a0<\/span>mashach<\/span><\/i><\/span>: and it\r\ndenotes the anointing with oil.\u00a0 In this application, however,\u00a0<\/span>mimshach<\/span><\/i><\/span>\u00a0is\u00a0<\/span>the anointing\r\nthat encompasses or overspreads<\/span><\/u>.\u00a0 (b) The second is the\r\nword\u00a0<\/span>k<\/span><\/i>e<\/span><\/i>rub<\/span><\/i><\/span>: which is\r\ntransliterated \"cherub\" in English.\u00a0 What gets missed in our\r\ntransliteration is the fact that this word -- in the Hebrew,\u00a0<\/span>Syriac<\/span><\/span>, Chaldean<\/span> and\u00a0<\/span>Phoenicio<\/span><\/span>-Semitic languages -- describes\u00a0a being who\r\nguards and ministers to the Throne of God;<\/u>\u00a0a powerful angelic being\r\nnear to the heart of God. [The popular myth of the cherub being some kind of\r\ncute, baby angel is about as far from reality as anything can be.]\u00a0 (c)\r\nThe third word in this phrase is\u00a0<\/span>sakak<\/span><\/i>:<\/span>to<\/span><\/u><\/span><\/span>\u00a0entwine, to cover over, to\r\nsurround<\/span><\/u>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

We have three\r\nwords assembled in Ezekiel's prophecy which draw a complete picture of\r\nLucifer's ministry to the Throne of God.\u00a0 All of them denote \"covering,\"\r\nor \"creating an envelope\" around the Throne.\u00a0 But that was only\r\npart of Lucifer's assignment and employment.\u00a0 His principal occupation was\r\nto minister in praise and worship.\u00a0 He was the perfection of music and he\r\nwas created specifically to surround the Throne and permeate it with the finest\r\npraise and worship in a dimension our natural perceptions and hearing are\r\nsimply not equipped to understand.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Since Lucifer\r\nwas created as a being who<\/span> would create sound -- the\r\nsound of worship -- we begin to see the picture Paul was drawing in Ephesians\r\n6:12 when he uses the Greek term for \"vibrate\" to describe the\r\nspiritual \"wrestling.\"<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

We won't take\r\ntime today to explore all of this prophecy other than to touch on one more\r\ndescriptive phrase.\u00a0 Ezekiel goes on to say,\u00a0<\/span>\"Thou\r\nhast sinned; therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of\r\nGod.\"\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0The Hebrew word translated \"profane\" is\u00a0<\/span>chalal<\/span><\/i><\/span>.\u00a0\r\nStudents of Hebrew will note that this word is a minute variation of the\r\nword\u00a0<\/span>halal<\/span><\/i><\/span>, which we\r\ntranslate as\u00a0<\/span>loud, boasting, celebratory praise<\/span><\/u>.\u00a0 The\r\nslight difference in the two words is the use of a diacritical mark which\r\nalters the meaning from \"celebratory praise\" to \"profane\r\nsounds\" or \"corrupted praise\" [or worship].\u00a0 The\r\nHebrew\u00a0<\/span>chalal<\/span><\/i><\/span>\u00a0also\r\ndenotes an arrogance or haughtiness.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

It takes no\r\ngreat rocket science to see and understand that with his arrogance in thinking\r\nhe could be seated\u00a0<\/span>\"upon the mount of the congregation, in the\r\nsides of the north,\"\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>(Isaiah 14:13) (more on this in\r\na minute) Lucifer's very arrogance corrupted the sound that came forth from\r\nhim.\u00a0 It instantly became the sound of opposition to the Throne of\r\nGod.\u00a0 It became a sound which opposed the anointing and the presence of\r\nthe Lord.\u00a0 Thus, he was cast out of the mountain of God (a descriptive phrase\r\noften used to describe the Throne and the presence of the Lord) with his\r\ncorrupted sound.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

The phrase\r\nthat Isaiah uses, \"the sides of the north,\" is one which he borrows\r\nfrom Psalm 48:1-2 where the Psalmist describes\u00a0<\/span>\"the\r\nmountain of His holiness\"<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>\"Mount\r\nZion, on the sides of the north.\"<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

I have shared\r\nthis picture before, but very quickly let me say that as part of a triumvirate\r\nof archangels (Michael and Gabriel being the other two named in Scripture),<\/span> he was privy to the counsels of God. When the Godhead\r\nengaged in the plan to create a species of being who would be like God, imbued\r\nwith His creative abilities, have the capability of free choice, be given the\r\npower of authority and dominion, and be specifically created and designed for\r\nfellowship and communion with Him, Lucifer -- as the one created being closest\r\nto the Throne -- became jealous and arrogant in pride.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Lucifer had\r\none ability and created purpose that the other archangels did not have: the\r\nability to create in the realm of music.\u00a0 His whole purpose had been the\r\nsound of Heaven.\u00a0 He existed for sound.\u00a0 That God would overlook him\r\nand not choose him for this special place of intimacy and communion -- and\r\ndominion -- angered him.\u00a0 He became rebellious against God.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Ezekiel\r\ndescribes what happened to him like this:\u00a0<\/span>\"Thou\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>wast<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>\u00a0perfect\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>(<\/span>tamiym<\/span><\/i><\/span>:\u00a0<\/span>sound, complete\r\nand undefiled<\/span><\/u>)\u00a0<\/span>in all thy ways<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0(<\/span>derek<\/span><\/i><\/span>:\u00a0<\/span>course of life,\r\nmanners, mode of action or activity<\/span><\/u>)\u00a0<\/span>from the day\r\nthou\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>wast<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>\u00a0created,\r\ntill iniquity(<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i><\/b>evel<\/span><\/i><\/span>:\u00a0<\/span><\/i>:\u00a0<\/span>to distort, to twist, to become perverse<\/span><\/u>)\u00a0<\/span>was found in thee.\"\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0And Ezekiel continues.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\"By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the\r\nmidst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee\r\nas profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub,\r\nfrom the midst of the stones of fire.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>Thine<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>\u00a0heart\r\nwas lifted up because of thy beauty,<\/span> thou hast\r\ncorrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the\r\nground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee.\u00a0 Thou\r\nhast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>thine<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>\u00a0iniquities,\r\nby the iniquity of thy traffic; therefore will I bring forth a fire from the\r\nmidst of thee, it shall devour thee, and I will bring thee to ashes upon the\r\nearth in the sight of all them that behold thee.\"<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

This is a\r\npicture too lengthy for me to describe in any detail in this Coffee Break, but\r\nlet me quickly define a few of the key Hebrew words used in Ezekiel's prophetic\r\ndiscourse.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

He says that\r\nbecause of the \"multitude of thy merchandise\" (<\/span>r<\/span><\/i>e<\/span><\/i>kullah<\/span><\/i><\/span>: trade [in\r\nmusic]) Lucifer was filled \"with violence\" (<\/span>chamas<\/span><\/i><\/span>: to\r\nmaltreat, to shake off, to imagine wrongfully) [<\/span>Note: the\r\nPalestinian terror organization, Hamas, gets its name from this word<\/span><\/i>) and that he\r\nwould, therefore, be cast \"as profane\" (we've already noted this\r\nword,\u00a0<\/span>chalal<\/span><\/i><\/span>,<\/span><\/i>\u00a0represents\r\n\"corrupted praise\") out of the mountain of God.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

By now, you\r\nwill easily see the pattern in the kind of sound that now began to come forth\r\nfrom the former Lucifer.\u00a0 His trade (or merchandise) was the sound of praise\r\nand worship.\u00a0 He twisted it, made it become violent and shaking and filled\r\nwith vain and wrongful imaginations.\u00a0 And now you begin to see the\r\nsignificance of Paul's statements in II Corinthians 10:3-5.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

That his name\r\nwas changed from Lucifer (the illuminated one, the morning star) to Satan (the\r\naccuser, the one who wrongfully imagines evil against God's people, the one who\r\nattacks) becomes very clear.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Once more we\r\ncome back to I Corinthians 14:10-11.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\"There\r\nare [and seem to be] so many generated and varied sounds in the world,<\/span> and none of them is without articulated and tonal\r\npurpose.\u00a0 If, therefore, I do not know or perceive the power of the sound,\r\nI shall be a moral and mental ignoramus to the one giving forth that sound; and\r\nhe that utters or creates the sound a rude and unlearned foreigner.\"<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

No sound\r\n\"is without articulated and tonal purpose.\"\u00a0 No sound is without\r\npower.\u00a0 It is the source of that sound that determines its tonal\r\npurpose.\u00a0 It takes no genius to realize that so much of the music (or that\r\nwhich passes for music) in today's society is the sound of Satan.\u00a0 It is\r\nfilled with violence. It is filled with hate.\u00a0 It is filled with sexual\r\ninnuendo, lust and enticement.\u00a0 It is filled with fear, doubt and unbelief\r\n-- all of which are Satan's.\u00a0 Today's music is the sound of Satan's\r\nopposition to all that represents the Lord Jesus Christ and His message of\r\nredemption.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

This next\r\nstatement is not meant to offend, and I apologize in advance for those who take\r\nit that way.\u00a0 I have personally marveled at folks who -- in ignorance of\r\nthe purpose and power of the sounds Satan generates -- seem to think it is OK\r\nto take the sound (or sounds) of Satan -- add words which speak of the Gospel\r\nof Jesus Christ, and think they are doing a good thing by \"reaching the\r\nyounger generation.\"<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

It is sheer\r\ndeception to think one can use the sound that Satan originates to preach the\r\nGospel.\u00a0 It compromises the Word and mixes the holy with the\r\nprofane.\u00a0 It treats the Gospel as \"common\" and ordinary -- not\r\nlife-changing, not the source of salvation, deliverance, healing, health,\r\nprosperity and wholeness in every area.\u00a0 It justifies using the sound of\r\nhate and the \"noise of thy viols\" (as Isaiah describes it: 14:11)\r\nsimply because \"that's what the world listens to, and if you want to reach\r\nthem you have to give them the kind of music they will hear.\"<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Will someone\r\nplease tell me how you use the sound of opposition to the Gospel to preach the\r\nGospel?\u00a0 The Gospel of Jesus Christ isn't just words you can put to any\r\nold sound!\u00a0 There is an\u00a0<\/span>onoma<\/span><\/i><\/span>\u00a0to the sound (and that's where we will go with\r\nour next Coffee Break).\u00a0 No wonder Paul refers to this as\r\n\"wrestling!\"<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

That's not\r\nhow Jesus did things, folks!\u00a0 He came with a different sound.\u00a0 He\r\ncame with the sound of life.\u00a0 He came with the sound of Heaven.\u00a0\r\nAngels announced His coming with a sound that filled the skies.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

When Jesus\r\nentered the sanctuary of the Temple and heard the sound of commerce and the\r\nselling of redemption, it stirred Him to anger.\u00a0 He drove those who\r\nthought they could cheapen His covenant by selling it for money out of the\r\nTemple.\u00a0 They were doing exactly what Lucifer thought to do in Heaven:\r\ndefile the sanctuary(<\/span><\/span>ies<\/span><\/span>)\u00a0<\/span>\"by the multitude of\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>thine<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>\u00a0iniquities,\r\nby the iniquity of thy traffic.\"<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0 There was no compromise\r\nin anything Jesus ever said or did.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n
