\n\n\nDealing With The Spirit of Poverty, Part 1<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\nI\u2019ve been promising to address this subject for some time, and that time has \ncome. In the next two or three weeks (or however long it takes me) we will \naddress the<\/span>\u00a0mindset, \nthe attitudes and the spirit that drives poverty mentality. We\u2019ll even have some \nfun along the way.<\/span><\/b><\/h4>\n

\n\n\n\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

\n\nI\u2019d be willing to bet you that I\u2019ve grown up with far more teaching on the topic \nof being \u201chumble\u201d and living the \u201chumble life\u201d than I\u2019ve ever heard on living \nthe blessed life, prospering, and all that.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\n\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\nThe body of Christ has been permeated for centuries with a poverty\u00a0<\/span>mentality.\u00a0<\/span>For\u00a0<\/span>some\u00a0<\/span>reason,\u00a0<\/span>folks\u00a0<\/span>think\u00a0<\/span>it\u00a0<\/span>is\u00a0<\/span>more\u00a0<\/span>blessed\u00a0<\/span>to \nrun around without a home to call your own, drive a clunky old car, buy their \nclothes from the Salvation Army or Goodwill, etc.,\u00a0<\/span>etc.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\n\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\nSomehow, this has been translated into \u201crighteousness\u201d and \u201cbeing like Jesus.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\nBrother, what a farce! This is a fraud that has been perpetrated on folks for \ngenerations. Now before you go to thinking I\u2019m going to start preaching \u201cthink \nand grow rich,\u201d forget it! That\u2019s not what this is about. It is about a mindset, \nhowever \u2013 one that permeates a lot of what infects and contaminates Christians \u2013 \nand the world in general.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\nPoverty\u00a0<\/span>begins\u00a0<\/span>in\u00a0<\/span>one\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>mind\u00a0<\/span>\u2013\u00a0<\/span>in\u00a0<\/span>their\u00a0<\/span>thinking,\u00a0<\/span>their\u00a0<\/span>attitudes\u00a0<\/span>and \ntheir behavior. Poverty is not the lack of worldly goods \u2013 and I\u2019ll speak to \nthat momentarily. Poverty is not a lack of money. Poverty is a curse. It can be \na generational curse, passed on down from\u00a0<\/span>generation \nto generation to generation. We\u2019ll talk about\u00a0<\/span>where\u00a0<\/span>it\u00a0<\/span>begins\u00a0<\/span>in\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>couple\u00a0<\/span>of\u00a0<\/span>minutes.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\n\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\nAs you all know, I grew up in Eskimo villages, the older of two sons of \nmissionary parents. We never had a lot, but we never did without. Dad was \nfrugal, but he wasn\u2019t poor. He never had lots of money, but he was never broke. \nMy brother and I learned how to do a lot of things growing up. Because Dad was a \npioneer missionary and a church builder, we grew up helping him build churches.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\n\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\nWell, when you do that, you learn lots of skills. We learned carpentry, cabinet \nmaking, hanging sheetrock, taping and texturing, painting, electrical and \nplumbing skills. We learned how to lay tile and carpet. We learned how to repair \nengines. If it was mechanical, we could make it work. If it was electrical, we \ncould take it apart and fix it. We learned how to do just about anything you \ncould think of.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\n\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\nWe didn\u2019t have lots of money, but we could take other folks\u2019 \u201cjunk\u201d they threw \naway and make it work. Nobody had to give us a fish and feed us for a day. We \nhad the skills to fish and take care of our needs. I\u2019m using the popular \nmetaphor, you understand.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\n\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\nBecause Dad taught us many skills, and we learned many others on our own, there \nwas never a task set before us or a need that cropped up that we couldn\u2019t take \ncare of.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>We were taught something \nfar more important, however, than the physical job skills.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>We \nwere\u00a0<\/span>given\u00a0<\/span>an\u00a0<\/span>attitude\u00a0<\/span>that\u00a0<\/span>shaped\u00a0<\/span>our\u00a0<\/span>lives:\u00a0<\/span>a \n\u201ccan do\u201d attitude.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Nothing was \nimpossible in the natural because we had the skills to accomplish anything we \nwanted to do.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>By\u00a0<\/span>the \nsame token, nothing was impossible in the spiritual realm because we had the \nLord.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\n\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\nThere were lots of times when we had only a few dollars, but we were never poor.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>We \nnever saw our- selves that way. If we needed something, we made it \u2013 often from \nscratch.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\n\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\nWere we exceptional people \u2013 unusually gifted or something like that?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Sure, \nbut not the way you think.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>It \nwasn\u2019t our natural gifts and abilities that made us exceptional.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>It \nwas a mindset of prosperity.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>It \nwas thinking and agreeing with the Lord.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>We \nnever thought \u201cpoor.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\nI remember getting these \u201cmissionary barrels\u201d that would come in once a year on \nthe ship.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>A \u201cmissionary barrel\u201d is \nusually a cardboard barrel or 55-gallon drum with a removable lid.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Churches \nand individuals would send us these things with used clothing\u00a0<\/span>\u2013\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>lot\u00a0<\/span>of\u00a0<\/span>junk\u00a0<\/span>folks\u00a0<\/span>just\u00a0<\/span>wanted\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0<\/span>throw \naway, but thought they would get credit from\u00a0<\/span>the \nLord for their \u201cgiving.\u201d In later years, when I took over the mission station at \nWainwright on a temporary basis, and then again at Saint Paul Island, we were \nstill receiving \u201cmissionary barrels\u201d with \u2013 get this! \u2013 used tea bags. It was a \nriot!<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\n\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\nWe felt sorry for folks whose mentality worked like that.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>They \nwere the ones that were poor.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>It \nwas a blessing, though. Mom taught us another skill: sewing.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Yeah, \nI know \u2013 boys sewing their own clothes?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>We \ncan laugh about it, but I learned to tailor my own clothing \u2013 and I did for \nmany, many\u00a0<\/span>years.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\n\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\nWhen Della and I first got married, and we were starting from scratch, we often \nlooked for bargains \u2013 not at the used clothing stores, but at the expensive \nstores where they sold name brand clothing. You could\u00a0<\/span>buy,\u00a0<\/span>for\u00a0<\/span>example,\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>$300\u00a0<\/span>or\u00a0<\/span>$400\u00a0<\/span>dress\u00a0<\/span>or\u00a0<\/span>skirt\u00a0<\/span>for \n$50 - $75, and even less. At those prices, you often got stuck\u00a0<\/span>with\u00a0<\/span>whatever\u00a0<\/span>sizes\u00a0<\/span>they\u00a0<\/span>had\u00a0<\/span>in\u00a0<\/span>stock,\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>rarely \ngot to purchase something that actually fit\u00a0<\/span>properly.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\nNo problem. I looked for something one or two or three sizes too big and then \nresized it on the sewing machine. Della dressed like a queen in those early days \nfor a fraction of what we\u2019d have had to pay normally. I purchased cashmere sport \njackets for pennies on the dollar and retailored them to fit. Hey, I looked like \na million dollars!<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\nNo one ever knew we didn\u2019t have money. And we never thought of ourselves as \nbeing poor.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Beginning to get the \npicture aren\u2019t you?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>It wasn\u2019t the \nmoney, or lack of it. It was the attitude, the mindset, the thought process that \npervaded our thinking.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\n\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\nWe were blessed! We enjoyed the blessings of God.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\n\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\nPoverty \u2013 true poverty \u2013 begins in the way you approach life. It be- gins in \nwhether you hang on to everything you have for dear life, or whether you freely \ngive what you have. Poverty \u2013 or prosperity \u2013 be- gins in how and whether we \napply a principle that Jesus taught.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\n\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\n\nLuke\u00a0<\/span>6:38<\/span><\/u>:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/b>\u201cGive,\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>it\u00a0<\/span>shall\u00a0<\/span>be\u00a0<\/span>given \nunto you; good measure, pressed down,\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>shaken\u00a0<\/span>together,\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>running \nover,\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>shall\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>men\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>give\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>into\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>your\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>bosom.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>For \nwith\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>same\u00a0<\/span>measure\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>that\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>ye\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>mete\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>withal \nit shall be measured to you again.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\n\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\nSo many folks are stuck with the mindset that in order to get and to have \n\u201cthings,\u201d you\u2019ve got to hang onto everything you get.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>The \nattitude has become a clich\u00e9 for generations: \u201cGet all you can and can all you \nget.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\n\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\nWrong!\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>That\u2019s a sure sign of \nsomeone who has been caught with and in the Spirit of Poverty.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\n\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\nWant to stay broke all of your life?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Want \nto always be in need?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Want to \nstruggle all the time to pay your bills?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Want \nto live in a run-down house that doesn\u2019t meet the need of your family?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Want \nto drive a car that always breaks down and winds up costing more in maintenance \nthan car payments on a new or newer vehicle?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Want \nto have lousy credit and be unable to be trusted by creditors because you never \nkeep your word on making your payments?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\n\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\nWe could go on and on with these questions.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>They \nall reflect the status of people who either live in real poverty or are stuck \nwith a Spirit of Poverty.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Hate to \nsay it, but I know a lot of folks who live exactly like what I\u2019ve just \ndescribed.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\n\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\nThen there\u2019s those folks who live in homes costing many hundreds of thousands of \ndollars, or even millions of dollars, drive a BMW or Mercedes, wear designer \nclothing \u2013 and are up to their eyeballs in debt, just staying ahead of their \ncreditors.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>They put on a show of \nprosperity, but the fact is they are stuck with a Spirit of Poverty and are \ntrying to hide it behind a false display of prosperity.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Fact \nis, they are living in true poverty!<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\n\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\nTheir\u00a0<\/span>lifestyles\u00a0<\/span>are\u00a0<\/span>those\u00a0<\/span>of\u00a0<\/span>a \nlife of fantasy! They aren\u2019t real. They\u00a0<\/span>are\u00a0<\/span>living\u00a0<\/span>like\u00a0<\/span>this\u00a0<\/span>because \nthey need to \u201cfeel good.\u201d They need to \u201ckeep up with\u00a0<\/span>the \nJones.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>They can\u2019t afford to look\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0<\/span>their\u00a0<\/span>neighbors,\u00a0<\/span>relatives \nor friends like they have need \u2013 that would be awful\u00a0<\/span>!!\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Here\u2019s \nthe worst part of it. They are professing Christians.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\n\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\nSo where does this mindset begin? In keeping. In receiving. In hanging onto. In \nbelieving that you can\u2019t accomplish something \u2013 anything!<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\n\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\nBut it has a root that goes way back!<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\nWe seem to go back to the Garden again and again, and this is no exception. \nConsider the way the conversation ensues when the Serpent first begins to talk \nto Eve.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\n\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\n\nGenesis 3:1-5<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Now \nthe serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the LORD God had \nmade. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every \ntree of the garden?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n

\n\nAnd the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the \ngarden:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/sup>But \nof the fruit of the tree which\u00a0is<\/i>\u00a0in the \nmidst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye \ntouch it, lest ye die.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n\nAnd the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know \nthat in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be \nas gods, knowing good and evil.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\n\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\nAre you seeing it? Do you see the psychology that the Serpent uses on Eve?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\n\u201cGod is just pulling a fast one on you! You are not really \u201cas gods!\u201d You don\u2019t \nhave the image and likeness of God. You are substandard.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u201cBUT! \nIf you will partake of the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, \nTHEN you will be \u201cas God\u201d with the ability to know Good and Evil just like He \ndoes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\n\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\nWhat a farce! What a fraud!<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\nWhat you are seeing is the same hogwash that Satan pulls on Christians every day \nof the week. As long\u00a0<\/span>as\u00a0<\/span>we\u00a0<\/span>believe\u00a0<\/span>in\u00a0<\/span>our\u00a0<\/span>heart\u00a0<\/span>of\u00a0<\/span>hearts\u00a0<\/span>that\u00a0<\/span>we\u00a0<\/span>can \nnever measure up to the standard by which\u00a0<\/span>we \nwere\u00a0<\/span>created,\u00a0<\/span>we\u2019ve\u00a0<\/span>opened\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>door\u00a0<\/span>in\u00a0<\/span>our\u00a0<\/span>lives\u00a0<\/span>for \nthe Spirit of\u00a0<\/span>Poverty.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\nPoverty isn\u2019t the\u00a0absence<\/u>\u00a0of money, \nproperty, possessions. etc.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Poverty \nis the presence of fear, of unbelief, of doubt.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>The \npresence of fear, unbelief or doubt establishes your whole mode of thinking, \nyour attitude towards life, your attitude towards money, your attitude to- wards \npossessions. It is the Spirit of Poverty.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\nWant to be broke all the time? Be in fear of what might happen tomorrow. Doubt \nyour abilities. Doubt God\u2019s promises to you. Think broke!<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\n\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\nWant to live your life in continual need of this or that? Don\u2019t believe that God \nhas given you ability to do any- thing you need to do. Let yourself get run over \nby circumstances. Be defeated by other people\u2019s attitudes and comments toward \nyou. Think\u00a0<\/span>failure!<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\n\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\nWant to live with physical ailments or diseases? Want to live believing that you \nare a candidate for cancer, for heart attacks, for every disease\u00a0<\/span>under\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>sun?\u00a0<\/span>Then\u00a0<\/span>listen\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0<\/span>what\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>doctors\u00a0<\/span>say \nto you. Accept their prognosis. Don\u2019t believe that Jesus paid the price for all \nsickness, all disease, all\u00a0<\/span>weakness.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\nNow I\u2019m really going to mess with you and say some- thing\u00a0<\/span>that\u00a0<\/span>sounds\u00a0<\/span>almost\u00a0<\/span>contradictory\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0<\/span>what\u00a0<\/span>I\u00a0<\/span>just\u00a0<\/span>said. \nBut this is still\u00a0<\/span>true.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\n\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\nWant to fail at everything you do? Want to go broke and\/or bankrupt every so \noften? Think more of yourself and your abilities than you do of God\u2019s desire to \nprovide for every need. Become one of those folks who think \u201cGod helps those who \nhelp themselves.\u201d Brother! Is that ever a bunch of hooey!! That\u2019s just an excuse \nfor secular human- ism replacing our trust and dependence in the Lord.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\nI\u2019ve got some advice for folks who believe that nonsense.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u201cGod \nhelp them that get caught helping themselves!\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>[grin]<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\n\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\nOK. Now, let\u2019s get down to some real principles behind the poverty thinkset. \nThere are spiritual principles which, when violated, result in poverty.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\n\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\nLet me say in advance that poverty is a curse. It is not a blessing. It is not \nthe purpose, the will or desire of the Lord for God\u2019s people to live in poverty. \nBefore I get too far along with this, and some of you jump to the conclusion \nthat I think all Christians should live in the lap of luxury, forget it! This is \nnot what that is about. And yet, to sound\u00a0<\/span>contradictory,\u00a0<\/span>there\u00a0<\/span>is\u00a0<\/span>absolutely \nnothing wrong with Christians living in the lap of luxury \u2013 as long as it is not \na debt lifestyle!<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\n\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\nThat said, take a look with me at two very important spiritual principles.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>This \nfirst principle deals with honoring the Lord, and keeping His commandments (And \nI\u2019m not necessarily referring to the Ten Commandments.)<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\n\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\nWe\u2019ll get into the blessing side of this in the next couple of weeks, but let me \nshow you the poverty side first.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>We \nwon't look at the whole thing, here.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>You \ncan read it for yourself in Deuteronomy 28.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>For \nthe sake of our discussion, we will just take ten verses.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\n\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\n\nDeuteronomy 28:15-26<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>But \nit shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy \nGod, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command thee \nthis day; that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/sup>Cursed\u00a0shalt<\/i>\u00a0thou\u00a0be<\/i>\u00a0in \nthe city, and cursed\u00a0shalt<\/i>\u00a0thou\u00a0be<\/i>\u00a0in \nthe field.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/sup>Cursed\u00a0shall \nbe<\/i>\u00a0thy basket and thy store.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\nCursed\u00a0shall be<\/i>\u00a0the fruit of thy body, \nand the fruit of thy land, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy \nsheep.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/sup>Cursed\u00a0shalt<\/i>\u00a0thou\u00a0be<\/i>\u00a0when \nthou comest in, and cursed\u00a0shalt<\/i>\u00a0thou\u00a0be<\/i>\u00a0when \nthou goest out.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/sup>The \nLORD shall send upon thee cursing, vexation, and rebuke, in all that thou \nsettest thine hand unto for to do, until thou be destroyed, and until thou \nperish quickly; because of the wickedness of thy doings, whereby thou hast \nforsaken me.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\nThe LORD shall make the pestilence cleave unto thee, until he have consumed thee \nfrom off the land, whither thou goest to possess it.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/sup>The \nLORD shall smite thee with a consumption, and with a fever, and with an \ninflammation, and with an extreme burning, and with the sword, and with \nblasting, and with mildew; and they shall pursue thee until thou perish.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\nYou get the picture, I'm sure.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>All \nof this was predicated on disobeying the voice and the commandment of the Lord.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>And \nI know that many of you will respond immediately and say, \"Well that was under \nthe Law.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>We are under Grace, now.\"<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\nNo, you're not!\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Grace is the \nempowerment to walk and live the Word of the Lord.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Grace \nis what we have IN Christ Jesus.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Grace \nis not an excuse to live like you want and expect to walk in the blessings of \nthe Lord.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Grace is the ability to \nwalk in the love of the Lord Jesus Christ -- and that encompasses total \nobedience to Him.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Walk outside of \nHis Grace, and consequences result.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>I'll \npick it up here, next week.<\/span><\/p>\n
